As a creator working on a budget myself, I suggest just rocking the phone camera and saving up until you can buy something that you are going to be happy with for a long time. I still use my iPhone 8+ and just ordered a Canon Rebel T5i. The quality of most modern smart phones is good enough for most video purposes, and I also think theres some value in the fact that you always have your phone with you so you're always ready to pull out your camera and record something.

I bought a Panasonic lumix gh2 because of this video. I now have three expensive lenses and I love it. The only bad thing is the adaptors and effective mm due to mirrorless. I have a 50mm, 250mm, and a 10mm. It’s a super cinematic camera, I am just shy about posting videos online of it. I’ve done a ton of kids photos and videos for their families with this camera. The real lesson here is "Shooting with cheap (slightly) *outdated* cameras looks amazing, just make sure you have good light" All these cameras looked pretty good, certainly good enough for a lot video applications. Yea sure there were some dynamic range issues but honestly for the price you won't beat them.

  • @danieldougan269
    @danieldougan269 Рік тому +2

Caleb touched on this a little, but I would like to be emphatic about it.
Newer cameras offer better image quality and higher resolution (4K, 6K, and even 8K). However, I still think the video quality coming from many of these cameras is "good enough" for UA-cam or your amateur film. They are fine for learning if you're just starting out.
But the most valuable innovations since these cameras were released come from ease of use.
    - Headphone and microphone jacks
    - In-body image stabilization
    - Reliable video autofocus
    - Improved audio pre-amps
    - Improved dynamic range
You want a camera you don't have to work around. And that's where many of the newer cameras have an advantage.
You don't need necessarily need an external audio recorder. You don't necessarily need a rig or a gimbal. I am not opposed to these things, but they are not as critical today as they once were.
I want a camera I can just pick up and use with minimal fuss. That's why I love my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and I am lusting after the new Lumix cameras like the G9 II and S5 II / S5 IIX.
These new cameras have amazing video quality and no recording limits. There is also an XLR adapter for many Lumix cameras.
If someone figures out how to make a compact hybrid camera with built-in ND filters, it will be an even better world.

I just upgraded to the Black Magic Pocket 4k, but can safely say that the Canon T5i has been an exceptional entry level camera, and surely the older ones are as well.
If you're on a budget get one of these entry level cameras, and then research and invest in vintage lenses. Quickest way to really boost the quality of your shots, beyond just getting better yourself obviously, is to find a unique vintage lens.

Great review! One note and one error correction on the GH-2:
    1. The GH-2 has a “crop mode” where it just reads the center 1920x1080 pixels instead of downsampling from the full MFT sensor, this makes it well suited to 16 and Super16mm C-Mount lenses with fUll HD resolution (probably better than Pentax’s Q).
    2. @dslrvideoshooter has a title card for the GH-2 which states that it has a 2.5mm headphone jack. This is incorrect. The GH-2 has a 2.5mm *mic in* jack. It works, but it does limit your mic options unless you are willing to use an adapter.

The Pentax is reminiscent of the old 1970’s Pentax 110 SLR camera. It might be interesting to see if it allows use of those lenses; the 18mm, the 24’s, the zooms, and the 50 and 70mm telephotos. Yes, these were a 110 camera from Pentax. BTW, Minolta had two SLR cameras as well in the same era.

For what you do you might want to pull it out and throw a lovely cheap 50mm like a Series E 1.8 on it. Cost you 50 bucks or so. On a DX might be the closeup portrait lens of your dreams. No need for adapters, Nikon made everything back-compatible until the full-frame mirrorless. Don't underestimate the importance of a mic jack. I know you can work around not having one by using your phone or an external recorder, but it's annoying and will slow you down. The GH2 is really the way to go on this list because it has headphone and mic jacks, just be sure to get stabilized Panasonic lenses if you plan on using the camera handheld. I'm sure Caleb would agree that audio is very important!
It sucks that it never occurred to Sony to include a mic jack on an APS-C camera until the NEX-7.
