Am I the only one with a Phobia of the First Page?!
DrawingWiffWaffles i love having new sketch book , but the first page :0!!
What's funny to me is that I recently got my first sketchbook, and my page one is a drawing of my OC. Nothing huge just my OC and it kinda describes me, cause I love creating OC's. I didn't even really experience First Page Phobia, but as I grow to become a better artists I'm positive I will. xD
Not only u senpai

"Sometimes, our first pages are just as messed up as our Mondays." - An ancient artist proverb
Lol
Scho---I MEAN HELL
It’s Monday today xd
I’m literally about to put this quote in my new sketchbook on the second page since I already have an Okay first page doodle lol.
I am the 1,000 subscriber please sub to my UA-cam channel every body
what i do is that i draw on my last page an “art progression” thing. i will draw the same thing, but from the first drawing, compared to the last drawing.
This was the first video I saw of yours! It completely motivated to start my first sketchbook and subscribe. Much love!
All of her drawings when she was younger were. Actually very beautiful, same as the ones she draws today. Enjoy your art making Rin. 🤗🌺
I love that you do this first page thingy, I never did those. :D Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks. I love to see them. :)
This is going to help me out when i start my new sketchbook!
I’ve just been watching so many of your videos. I’ve been getting back into drawing and I really want to improve my art style and such. I usually only draw wolves but I want to improve cartoonish drawings and yours are amazing and you have great tips!
i always use the first page as a swatch or a test page persay like when i wanna test a pen or a new marker. oh and i got the idea to number my sketchbooks from u!
I no joke sit there for ten minutes brushing my hand over the cover…then, I move on! Finally! I’m getting somewhere- no wait I’ve been spending an hour brushing the first page of my hand while spiraling into thoughts and fantasies of being an animator for Disney.
Thats how you know you're a true artist waffle; a legit bucket of sketchbooks
Edit: this comment is not meant to offend anyone or make anyone feel illegitimate. Your an artist as long as you feel like one :)
Mine just says “welcome to my prison cell”
I made a drawing on the cover of my sketchbook, but I’m more intimidated by the first page. I actually left the first one blank, and started on the second. Lol.
For my page one I try to mess it up on purpose because once I do that I know it's something I choose to do instead of having that fear of messing up when I'm actually trying to draw something good
You should do a speed draw series!
First pages can be super scary but this was such a cozy and encouraging video!
Thanks, Waffles!

Personally, Ill draw a detailed sketch at the first page, then at the last page I'll redraw the first page. Its a great way to see how much ive improved throughout the sketchbook! It's alot of fun too ^^
That's an awesome idea
That seems interesting, I just started on my sketchbook, I'll be taking this idea for it
Good ideas!!
Oh ma GAH, that's so genious!
So many artists are such Einsteins these days
I’ve had a sketchbook since the Christmas before last and I haven’t been able to touch it because the first page is just so intimidating. This gives me a little courage :)
You can do it!
inhalingsunrise try drawing non Pokémon characters as Pokémon.
its not the first page you need to worry about , its the last page.by the time you get to the end youve already forgotten about the first page but that last page lingers
Regally Ayana I never have that issue.. I still haven't finished one sketch book. Still on the sane in since high school..
Did you already do it?
The worst is that I'm a perfectionist and when a drawing isn't up to par I rip it out. My sketchbook is balding 😢😭
Me too lol
i have a sketchbook from last year that has 10 pages left after i ripped all the other ones 😭
Aliza Shah awe that sucks, you should keep practicing. Especially keeping the ones you don’t like, because the day you become an amazing artist, you’ll be able to laugh back at your old drawings 😂 💕
@cool _ breeze that is something I would do lol-
i am a perfectionist too sometimes but don’t ever rip them out! so you can look back at them in the future :)

Ya know, this is funny 'cause, I just started a new sketchbook and drew on the first page (it's not finished yet. It's only a sketch right now). I drew my favorite characters from cartoons and movies, and I said "Welcome to my Sketchbook". I think it was the very first sketchbook tour, that I watched of you, that inspired me to do a welcome page each time. And I've been doing it ever since!

So how's that sketchbook of yours? full of character sketches? That's what I'm aiming for too when I get mine soon.
I have the shakiest frickin hand I swear. My sketching is always fine, and look moderately ok, but as soon as I do line art, my hand goes 'ooh I have to draw straight lines? Hell no! Wiggle wiggle' I have sort of learned to fix it as best as I can... Anyway, thanks for the tips!
I get the struggle but my lines aren't not straight lines they just have weird small lines coming out every corner because I do the sketchy motion with lineart and I can't help it.
I personally like to start off my sketchbook with my name as graffiti.
It gives it this pop of color and it makes me feel free to sketch on the rest of the pages.
Hana Shaker Ooooh, I like that a lot.
This was surprising really helpful!
Yeet, I'm gonna try it!
yessss
I really want to do that on my cover!! Thanks for the idea
i start every sketchbook by doing swatches on the back of the last page to warm up and so the sketchbook feels a little less new and fresh and too precious to ruin. it breaks it in a little. and sometimes i just work backwards through my sketchbooks until i reach a day where i have the PERFECT idea where im super inspired and im ready to tackle that first page.
So do I! I just thought i was weird
im the opposite i swatch on the first page then draw on the next page and so on.
Woahhhh that's actually really helpful thanks!
Imma try doing that thanks a bunch
I made u have 91 likes. I ruined perfection mwahahahahhahahahahahhahahahah
I can't tell you HOW MANY first pages I've ripped out MY GOSH
Raydashie Twi Twi I'm always like "hhhhhhuuuxhhxh another page ruined" then I try to comfort myself by saying things like "it's not so bad" but then I still rip it out. Then the cycle repeats
Zeidi _ I feel your pain
Zeidi _ and sometimes I'm so proud of the first page when I'm done with it but when I come back to it a day later I'm like *WHHHHHHHHHY*
i usually try to cover up my bad pages instead of ripping them out, i usually put sticky notes over the ugly bits or put another paper over it, or even draw right over it with a darker tool. since i sketch in colored pencil I can often push them into the background by sketching over it with an ink pen or even just erasing it all lightly and then sketching in a darker pencil. it's also a good page to paint on with acrylic or gouache, or to paste pictures you want to keep on like a collage or scrapbook!
(im just really precious with my sketchbooks tho, i always feel bad damaging books of any kind so i would feel bad ripping out my pages even though they're literally perforated lol)
Elle Marie hm maybe I should start doing that instead of violating the poor sketch book XD
I'm getting a new sketchbook tomorrow and just, THANK YOU. OHMYGOD. This is going to help me tremendously. Thank you TvT;
How to overcome the fear of the first page:
flip to the 2nd.
Haha I do that I just write my name and phone number you can call if my sketchbook goes missing.
@@ang_qq I don't even remember my phone number
ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED
I can't do that then it annoys me
I just draw some fan art on the first page and save the main sketchbook for my characters. Then I do the same for the last page
Me when I draw a whole portrait, that actually looks really good:
*I‘m a Master at my work, nobody can defeat me...*
Random Dogface, hell yeah! confidence babe!
I’ve yet to ever even complete a sketchbook 😭 gotta use these ideas to fill one up
my advice? draw everything! you have this idea that u don't think will turn out good? draw it anyways! draw the good, the bad, the ugly, the dirty, whatever! just fill it to the brim with all your ideas, because you'll look back one day and think, "wow i'm really glad i drew that." or you won't! worst case, you learn how NOT to draw something. you don't like how that shoe turned out? turn the page, dedicate the back to learning how to draw a super awesome shoe!! just draw, man. just do it. i believe in you.
Monthly Art challenges they help fill a sketchbook
same im not good at keeping up with hobbies because i get burnt out really easily
Piquetures by Nomi me too like I have lots of sketchbooks that I have used some and not finished lol
I also have that issue of having anxiety over having a perfect sketchbook. I've also yet to ever complete one so it's on the way
I actually put more effort into the last page then the first. It is like a way to show off how much you've learned or got better at in each sketchbook. Am I the only one that does this?
I actually do both sometimes XD like, I’d draw something nice on the first page, and on the last page I’d attempt to redraw it, to see my progress (:
No, I do the same thing but I also add in OCs and events that my sketchbook for me through
Iva Bee thats so smart!
Haha same, the cover is kinda my first page, but I actually just put flowers on there, only now that I’ve ACTUALLY finished a whole sketchbook, do I see that the last page is almost more important :)
Lol i just sketched bnha characters on my most recent one XD

you should try to just go for it or do something really random that represents your personality or your likings. Also try drawing something you are comfortable with drawing. then, instead of just giving up you know that you will progress overtime and get better. I'm the same way but I just try not to erase as much so that it doesn't look too dirty. hope this helps!
@@artbylema5058 thanks so much!
@Luna Lovegood Oh thank you so much!
Maybe instead of worrying, tape the page secure in the sketch book so you don't rip it out and just doodle something with ballpoint pen.or coloured pencil for more opacity variety.if you don't like it just flip it over and use the back page.
edit:I'm really late qwq
Don't ever just erase a picture unless you suddenly realize how to fix it. You can always come back and work on it later. Just flip to next page and keep going. Hold on to those early drawings and when you reach the end of the sketchbook, flip back to that first page and see how much you've learned. I fun way to track your progress is to try redrawing the first drawing in your sketchbook on the last page to see how you've improved.
I WAS LITERALLY TRYING TO PLAN THE FIRST PAGE WHEN I SAW THE NOTIFICATION
Lol
"We've got to work within our limitations" - so true.
I like to skip the first page and inner cover until the end, so I can make something representative of the whole book once it's complete
Aldo Ink what I do is make my first page then when I come to the end I remake the first page or make something to the best of my ability 🙂 I used to draw the inner cover as my first page then when I was completely done with the sketchbook I made the first page the last so you can see them side by side. 🙃 I don’t do that anymore because I got a different kind of sketchbook that doesn’t have a cover but yeah... that’s how I used to and do do it🙃

Hey Waffles!!! I'm pretty young and I just got my first ever sketchbook. I'm just terrified that I won't progress and won't get better over time, because I don't always have time to sit down and draw. I'm filled with all sorts of anxiety about what people will think if they catch a glimpse into my inner arty me. I'm not a very outgoing arty gal, but I'm outgoing and love meeting new people, but for some reason I can never get over my phobia of people seeing my art and judging me by it. I'm starting high school in August and that freaks me out even more, because I know that I'll be doodling during classes and that people will look over my shoulder at my drawings. I have so much anxiety about it and I was wondering if you had any tips.
btw I love your vids and WAFFLES!!! #Waffles4life
I also haven't found my art style yet and I'm not very good at drawing humans. Any tips for that too? (p.s. sorry if it seems like I'm rambling)
Temples4ever wellllllllll try to watch different artists' videos and sort of combine their art styles or something.Btw im only 9 and in fifth grade so my advice doesn't always work.ok thanks for reading
Just draw whatever and follow tutorials and you will get better
Templates4ever
I have a tip for you , you could watch tutorials by draw so cute or any other artist. No one can make you think that . Besides you can do anything you want
I'm 9 and my drawing is so bad
But I still show it to my friends they all laugh and giggle I feel happy for them sometimes I draw something from "draw so cute" and give to my friends they become really happy so do I.The thing is you practice and trying 1 day you will become an artist a famous artist
Moral : keep trying
Watch some art vids! Those always help me!
By keeping at it a little bit consistently you'll get better :) Look for references, and don't be afraid to try drawing new things even if they don't work out. Practice and keep going and you'll grow and get better at it! As for showing your art to others, it's perfectly fine to not show absolutely everyone your art if you don't want to, but some will really like it and encourage you to keep going, even if it's family, keep going, and keep drawing. The world needs more artists, even if it doesn't know it.
Don't give up, you've got this!!!

I don't think I've ever finished a sketchbook. I just have several active ones all at the same time.
They wind up getting linked to my moods, so I reach for different books depending on how I feel.
One of my favorites is an old algebra book that I like to use sharpies in. No first page anxiety if it's already printed on.
Yes thank you! I actually got a brand new sketch book the other day and I've been terrified to start it!

Great ideas for a first page, I like the welcome message idea!
I don't really know why, but I feel like laughing soo much about what is on my mind, tought its more likely a thing to cry on.😂😅 As for me, it's not about the fear of the first page of a sketchbook (let that aside, I have a fear of blank pages bigger than A5😅), mine can't even be called a sketchbook! A sketchbook is called a sketchbook for obvious reasons.😑 You have to sketch in it, doodle, draw, paint, try out new things, develop. It's not 'art' what you have to make in it, it's 'sketching', having fun! Making 'art' is about preciseness, perfectionism, and that 'everything has to be on point' sindrome!😐 Sketching is fun and all.😃 If it would be about 'art', it would been called artbook instead of sketchbook. But then, as I said, can't even be called sketchbook! I'm just rarely working in it, and when I do, I spent couples of hours or even days on one piece.😕😧 It's never good enough, never perfect enough! I know, I know, now you say "Just chill, don't be that uptight! Work with timelimit or stuff like that. Try to draw different poses, clothing, places and all. Try to learn new things and develop your style!" Hah, nice to say, and I already know all these. But how should I, when I don't even have an own style? If you look at those idk, maybe 4-5 drawings in my sketchbook, you would say that it's all made by different people. Not just that they don't have a unique style, they have nothing in common!😂 My type of drawing is that 'copy-art' one, when I see something and I get inspirated like drawing the whole thing down as much as possibly similar. Now that I think about it, I can't even draw. What I do is not called drawing but highkey perfectionism. Nothing else. And people still praise me that I'm such an amazing artist! 😧 If I have no reference or just nothing else, there is literaly no way for me to draw for example a proper body. (Again, lets leave it aside that I can't really even with reference) Sketching and 'arting' are two very different things, but, ya know, theycan be each other. But not like I sit down and try to make art by sketching, no. More like that a sketch is art in itself. Because it reflects ourselves, our style, attitude, personality, talent and all. Jeeez, this is soo messy! Idk what to do, I'm totaly hopeless..
Ps. Sorry for all this whinny, long spetch, but I had to let it out.
I just got a new sketchbook yesterday. Weird coincidence?
SkylaCatto I THINK NOT.
Clara ArtFarts I don’t know why ur comment made me laugh it just did 😂
My fave tip is "if the first page freaks you out dont start on the first page" sometimes jumping to a random point in the middle eases that fear and once you're more comfortable then you can use page one
What I like to do in my first page is to draw my OC on half the page and when I finish my sketch book I draw it again on the other side of the first page and that way I can see how I improved during that time face to face
Waffle: I don’t wanna draw on the yellow paper
Also waffle: makes her page yellow
"We've gotta work within our limitations. It's what makes us artists." That line really stood out to me, wow! Love it! This video is fantastic and super helpful!
I almost never use my first page. I leave it blank. Forever. I have serious first page anxiety. i'm also a page jumper. I like things to feel really random in my sketchbook. Putting the same kind of drawings back to back feels boring to me. I also tape in a lot of outside work that I do on scratch papers or stray watercolor papers, and I tend to tape those into the pages I don't like so much, bc im a firm believer of never ripping out pages form my sketchbooks. they arnt taped in so much that you can't see what I originally put on the page, but I do like that if someone flips to that page they see something I really like first, then when they lift up, they see my garbage lol.
Thank you waffles! First pages are really stressful for me becasue I'm afraid that once people see it then the will judge me based on that page. So thank you soooooooooo much for helping me and I hope you have a fantastic day!
I love this video and helped me with this phobia but i have a question...HOW DO U SKETCH LIGHT?! I cant every time i try i fail so hard so plz help meeeee

a tip is holding the pencil farther from the bottom/ where you draw and closer to the top
Just don't press hard. Skim it across the paper lightly. You need to practice haha
i really like drawing one of my ocs on the first page of my sketchbooks, that way i can draw something im used to and so i can see how much better they look when i redraw them with an entire sketchbook's worth of progress behind me
