i usually try to cover up my bad pages instead of ripping them out, i usually put sticky notes over the ugly bits or put another paper over it, or even draw right over it with a darker tool. since i sketch in colored pencil I can often push them into the background by sketching over it with an ink pen or even just erasing it all lightly and then sketching in a darker pencil. it's also a good page to paint on with acrylic or gouache, or to paste pictures you want to keep on like a collage or scrapbook! (im just really precious with my sketchbooks tho, i always feel bad damaging books of any kind so i would feel bad ripping out my pages even though they're literally perforated lol)

"We've gotta work within our limitations. It's what makes us artists." That line really stood out to me, wow! Love it! This video is fantastic and super helpful!
This is such a nice video! I've actually never managed to fill a sketchbook so far in 11 years of focusing on art (lots of loose sheets or starting sketchbooks and getting new ones), but I'm 14 pages away from filling my first one and plan on getting a mixed media one after that and making it a proper one c: This'll really help me make it just what I want it to be
Be sure to tell us how the Sketchbook works, I have been looking for the same things! Very helpful, I almost always just not put anything on that first page... love you waffles
I love how the background of your page one blends into that yellow first page almost perfectly! :) Great ideas for a first page, I like the welcome message idea!
LittleKittenUA-camr All I do is just draw the first thing that comes to mind and I don't know how it is going to go but it is actually fun. The last sketchbook I started I drew a person. Then fire... And set the person on fire
Ok, like you, need to be, my therapist. You are so inspiring and you really bring out that burning urge to draw in me.Your art is so good, I sure do hope your channel becomes one of the most successful ones, because you really deserve with all your hard work and empathy. -Your friendly local garbage can
"We have our ups, and we have our downs. Sometimes our page ones are just as messed up as our Monday's, but that doesn't mean our last page and our Fridays aren't going to be great." - Rin June 2018 Best Inspirational Artist quote EVER!!!!! Love You Rin/Waffles!!!!
Thank you waffles! First pages are really stressful for me becasue I'm afraid that once people see it then the will judge me based on that page. So thank you soooooooooo much for helping me and I hope you have a fantastic day!
I don't think I've ever finished a sketchbook. I just have several active ones all at the same time. They wind up getting linked to my moods, so I reach for different books depending on how I feel. One of my favorites is an old algebra book that I like to use sharpies in. No first page anxiety if it's already printed on.
i just finished the first page of my first ever sketchbook (an illo as well) and i am SO excited i’ve been drawing for a while but i’ve been too stupid to think abt getting a sketchbook but now i have one and i’m literally in love

you should try to just go for it or do something really random that represents your personality or your likings. Also try drawing something you are comfortable with drawing. then, instead of just giving up you know that you will progress overtime and get better. I'm the same way but I just try not to erase as much so that it doesn't look too dirty. hope this helps!
Maybe instead of worrying, tape the page secure in the sketch book so you don't rip it out and just doodle something with ballpoint pen.or coloured pencil for more opacity variety.if you don't like it just flip it over and use the back page. edit:I'm really late qwq
Don't ever just erase a picture unless you suddenly realize how to fix it. You can always come back and work on it later. Just flip to next page and keep going. Hold on to those early drawings and when you reach the end of the sketchbook, flip back to that first page and see how much you've learned. I fun way to track your progress is to try redrawing the first drawing in your sketchbook on the last page to see how you've improved.
My fave tip is "if the first page freaks you out dont start on the first page" sometimes jumping to a random point in the middle eases that fear and once you're more comfortable then you can use page one
Oh my word! I found this again after several years. This is the channel that taught me literally most of the fundamental art techniques and tips I still use today (even setting up sketchbooks with the start and end date etc.)… happy to say that this channel really started my artistic passion and helped me win several awards for art despite it only being a hobby for me. Subscribed to this channel now. Thanks for these videos :)
i really like drawing one of my ocs on the first page of my sketchbooks, that way i can draw something im used to and so i can see how much better they look when i redraw them with an entire sketchbook's worth of progress behind me
I finsh and start sketchbooks soo often i have no anxiety anymore but thats just personally. I just sketch whatever i want to then add the start date and end data (usually i finsh my skechbooks in 10 days) also good video!! Keep up the good work also this is the earliest ill ever been!!
I watch your UA-cam channel almost everyday and it really convinces me I can draw as well as you. I love your art style so much and I’m hoping to be a successful artist one day. The things I really need to improve on is the hair, body shapes and head shapes. ❤️❤️❤️😊😊😊
Am subscribing straight away because why won't i. I haven't drawn on my new sketch book which i got in December because of fear of messing up the first page, u gave me courage to actually do it. Thanks alot.
You’ve really inspired me! Whenever I’m feeling stuck you always re- motivate my creativity and sometimes I get something good out of the final drawing. I just want to say thanks and I can only aspire to be as good as you are in the future! ❤️😁☺️
What I like to do in my first page is to draw my OC on half the page and when I finish my sketch book I draw it again on the other side of the first page and that way I can see how I improved during that time face to face
I loved the idea of drawing my oc's! I have so many of them and I thought it would be really cool to use up the whole page and arrange them as if it were a class picture! thanks waffles!
I always do swatches on my first page, even if I don’t have any new art supplies. I’ll swatch my favorite art supplies or something. It really helps me. Love the video, as always!
I got a new sketchbook two weeks a go and I really love my first page I took my best drawings form the first one and made a collage. That really worked for me. So maybe filling it in a way you like with stickers or something else. Might work for others too it looks interesting and it gets me motivated to draw.
I don't really know why, but I feel like laughing soo much about what is on my mind, tought its more likely a thing to cry on.😂😅 As for me, it's not about the fear of the first page of a sketchbook (let that aside, I have a fear of blank pages bigger than A5😅), mine can't even be called a sketchbook! A sketchbook is called a sketchbook for obvious reasons.😑 You have to sketch in it, doodle, draw, paint, try out new things, develop. It's not 'art' what you have to make in it, it's 'sketching', having fun! Making 'art' is about preciseness, perfectionism, and that 'everything has to be on point' sindrome!😐 Sketching is fun and all.😃 If it would be about 'art', it would been called artbook instead of sketchbook. But then, as I said, can't even be called sketchbook! I'm just rarely working in it, and when I do, I spent couples of hours or even days on one piece.😕😧 It's never good enough, never perfect enough! I know, I know, now you say "Just chill, don't be that uptight! Work with timelimit or stuff like that. Try to draw different poses, clothing, places and all. Try to learn new things and develop your style!" Hah, nice to say, and I already know all these. But how should I, when I don't even have an own style? If you look at those idk, maybe 4-5 drawings in my sketchbook, you would say that it's all made by different people. Not just that they don't have a unique style, they have nothing in common!😂 My type of drawing is that 'copy-art' one, when I see something and I get inspirated like drawing the whole thing down as much as possibly similar. Now that I think about it, I can't even draw. What I do is not called drawing but highkey perfectionism. Nothing else. And people still praise me that I'm such an amazing artist! 😧 If I have no reference or just nothing else, there is literaly no way for me to draw for example a proper body. (Again, lets leave it aside that I can't really even with reference) Sketching and 'arting' are two very different things, but, ya know, theycan be each other. But not like I sit down and try to make art by sketching, no. More like that a sketch is art in itself. Because it reflects ourselves, our style, attitude, personality, talent and all. Jeeez, this is soo messy! Idk what to do, I'm totaly hopeless.. Ps. Sorry for all this whinny, long spetch, but I had to let it out.
Hey Waffles!!! I'm pretty young and I just got my first ever sketchbook. I'm just terrified that I won't progress and won't get better over time, because I don't always have time to sit down and draw. I'm filled with all sorts of anxiety about what people will think if they catch a glimpse into my inner arty me. I'm not a very outgoing arty gal, but I'm outgoing and love meeting new people, but for some reason I can never get over my phobia of people seeing my art and judging me by it. I'm starting high school in August and that freaks me out even more, because I know that I'll be doodling during classes and that people will look over my shoulder at my drawings. I have so much anxiety about it and I was wondering if you had any tips. btw I love your vids and WAFFLES!!! #Waffles4life I also haven't found my art style yet and I'm not very good at drawing humans. Any tips for that too? (p.s. sorry if it seems like I'm rambling)
Temples4ever wellllllllll try to watch different artists' videos and sort of combine their art styles or something.Btw im only 9 and in fifth grade so my advice doesn't always work.ok thanks for reading
Templates4ever I have a tip for you , you could watch tutorials by draw so cute or any other artist. No one can make you think that . Besides you can do anything you want I'm 9 and my drawing is so bad But I still show it to my friends they all laugh and giggle I feel happy for them sometimes I draw something from "draw so cute" and give to my friends they become really happy so do I.The thing is you practice and trying 1 day you will become an artist a famous artist Moral : keep trying
By keeping at it a little bit consistently you'll get better :) Look for references, and don't be afraid to try drawing new things even if they don't work out. Practice and keep going and you'll grow and get better at it! As for showing your art to others, it's perfectly fine to not show absolutely everyone your art if you don't want to, but some will really like it and encourage you to keep going, even if it's family, keep going, and keep drawing. The world needs more artists, even if it doesn't know it. Don't give up, you've got this!!!
Great tips! It was so satisfying when you flipped the page and the marker didn’t bleed through. I am nuts for hardbound sketchbooks, I’ve been using strathmore but it looks like I’ll need to switch my brand!
I almost never use my first page. I leave it blank. Forever. I have serious first page anxiety. i'm also a page jumper. I like things to feel really random in my sketchbook. Putting the same kind of drawings back to back feels boring to me. I also tape in a lot of outside work that I do on scratch papers or stray watercolor papers, and I tend to tape those into the pages I don't like so much, bc im a firm believer of never ripping out pages form my sketchbooks. they arnt taped in so much that you can't see what I originally put on the page, but I do like that if someone flips to that page they see something I really like first, then when they lift up, they see my garbage lol.
for the sketchbook i'm about to finish i only wrote a note about art in a pretty font, to keep it simple it really helped me to get over that "first spage fear"
I have 13 EMPTY note books in my desk for 2 years. This helped me a lot and inspired me. Thank you so much Waffles! Btw, When I lightly draw and then trace I sometimes fall it jellybeaning. Btw #2 you earned a new subscriber ;)
I normally watch u on my tv and I don’t have an account on there and I would like to thank you for your entertainment 🥺 and thank you for all the ideas 🥺 I wanna be just like you 🤗
what i do is that i draw on my last page an “art progression” thing. i will draw the same thing, but from the first drawing, compared to the last drawing.
Bad 1st page = a Monday. Great analogy! Better days to come, progress to be made. Love your advice. Practical, hopeful and encouraging. Really enjoying your channel. The chatter while you come up with your thumbnails and design, explaining your thought process is enlightening & fun. Thank you for sharing.
Yes! The thumbnails are such a good idea! I’ve always had trouble with the first page....and every page after that lol but the lil thumbnails are perfect because it’s like a trial and I can see what works and what doesn’t before I ruin a page lol 💕 literal lifesaver!
I'm scared to even take off the front wrapping bc I might unintentionally ruin the whole book in some way lol but this video helps whenever I'm about to start a sketchbook
Wiff waffels I'm super super inspired by your vids . I watch them everyday . Your vids are what keeps me coming for more and more art . U r an amazing person CHANGING the lives of many discouraged artists around the world . U rampage my role model ever since I watched your vid in like 2015 . I've been sticking with u since about 3 years . U r so funny and so cool . I just love your work and hope u keep on immersing us u r the hero of every artists in the gallaxy
I've just finished a HND in illustration and I've been having a horrible time battling with feelings of not being good enough at art and kinda like impostor syndrome with myself as an artist and it's really made art feel like something I hate. Which is horrible because art use to give me so much happiness and comfort. And now when I need that comfort it's kinda tainted by those feelings of anxiety and feeling like I'm not good enough. But I've came back to watching your videos and it's made a huge difference. Your videos are so calming, I love listening to your voice, and your sketchbooks are comforting in the way that I can see that everything you draw brings you joy and you honestly want to draw what it is your drawing. In other words, I feel your passion for what you draw. Your videos are really making me want to draw whatever I want with no added anxiety and I really really thank you for that because what I've been going through is not a nice feeling. Keep being awesome x

I always skip the first page in a new sketchbook. Maybe now I’ll have a little more confidence :))
Yes! Fill that sucker!
Same!
Kira Anderson me too, actually, I skip the first 3 pages... o_o
Yes thank you! I actually got a brand new sketch book the other day and I've been terrified to start it!
You can do it!!!
if i got a new sketchbook i skip the first page so no pressure😂😂😂. then if i have an idea i draw it in the first page
PXEL Aeb I DO THE EXACT SAME THING!!
Ikr! Starting a new sketchbook is so nerve racking lmao
7:45
Realizing that i have the exact same pencil😶😶
WE HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON
Welp besides drawing
This is such a nice video!
I've actually never managed to fill a sketchbook so far in 11 years of focusing on art (lots of loose sheets or starting sketchbooks and getting new ones), but I'm 14 pages away from filling my first one and plan on getting a mixed media one after that and making it a proper one c: This'll really help me make it just what I want it to be
:)
@@myro5815 :) every 2 years, someone should add a smiley face here!
Be sure to tell us how the Sketchbook works, I have been looking for the same things! Very helpful, I almost always just not put anything on that first page... love you waffles
I love how the background of your page one blends into that yellow first page almost perfectly! :)
Great ideas for a first page, I like the welcome message idea!
I am not scared to start a notebook I just draw whatever. This is an awesome video though
Tabitha White same
You two are lucky. I sometimes get so scared I can't start a new sketchbook!
LittleKittenUA-camr
All I do is just draw the first thing that comes to mind and I don't know how it is going to go but it is actually fun. The last sketchbook I started I drew a person. Then fire... And set the person on fire
Teach me your ways... 😩
Ambri Miller
Its literally just not being scared and doing whatever comes to mind
Ok, like you, need to be, my therapist. You are so inspiring and you really bring out that burning urge to draw in me.Your art is so good, I sure do hope your channel becomes one of the most successful ones, because you really deserve with all your hard work and empathy.

Best Inspirational Artist quote EVER!!!!! Love You Rin/Waffles!!!!
😪so inspired
OMG my mom just got me my first sketch book and I am scared of adding sketches in it so I am happy that you uploaded a new video
When the ink doesn't flow right, but only you notice...
I'mArtsingRN so relatable
Yasss i do that all the time!
Dear Drawing Wiff Waffles, you are officially my idle
I can tell this is a video I'll end up watching A LOT!!!!!!
I watched it 8 times, editing and all, so seems fair. Hahaha
i just finished the first page of my first ever sketchbook (an illo as well) and i am SO excited
i’ve been drawing for a while but i’ve been too stupid to think abt getting a sketchbook but now i have one and i’m literally in love
Same except it's my 4th sketchbook 💀
oh says you when all of your sketches are literally perfect
That's because you're seeing the middle of her art journey not the beginning

I just skip the first page till I feel inspired so I don't regret my life choices, smh

you should try to just go for it or do something really random that represents your personality or your likings. Also try drawing something you are comfortable with drawing. then, instead of just giving up you know that you will progress overtime and get better. I'm the same way but I just try not to erase as much so that it doesn't look too dirty. hope this helps!
@@artbylema5058 thanks so much!
@Luna Lovegood Oh thank you so much!
Thanks for these videos :)
i really like drawing one of my ocs on the first page of my sketchbooks, that way i can draw something im used to and so i can see how much better they look when i redraw them with an entire sketchbook's worth of progress behind me
*Got a new sketchbook to draw*
*opens the first page*
*OH GOD IM NOT READY*
Just got a six hundred page sketchbook and was so scared to make the first page!
Mia Sears Lucky!! I just got a 30 page Canson XL watercolor sketchpad. I want that giant one from Amazon so bad but it's $40
Holy cow, that's a huge sketchbook
DrawingWiffWaffles It’s CRAZY huge
Mia Sears holy moly 600?!??!!!
That's HUGE for a sketchbook. Me, personally, I've read bigger books, but HOLY COW that's going to be impossible to fill.
You're so inspirational to artists who feel like what they draw isn't good enough. Thank you!
I got a new sketchbook two weeks a go and I really love my first page I took my best drawings form the first one and made a collage. That really worked for me. So maybe filling it in a way you like with stickers or something else. Might work for others too it looks interesting and it gets me motivated to draw.
That's an excellent idea!
DrawingWiffWaffles thank you for replying
#Waffles4life
I also haven't found my art style yet and I'm not very good at drawing humans. Any tips for that too? (p.s. sorry if it seems like I'm rambling)
Temples4ever wellllllllll try to watch different artists' videos and sort of combine their art styles or something.Btw im only 9 and in fifth grade so my advice doesn't always work.ok thanks for reading
Just draw whatever and follow tutorials and you will get better
Templates4ever
I have a tip for you , you could watch tutorials by draw so cute or any other artist. No one can make you think that . Besides you can do anything you want
I'm 9 and my drawing is so bad
But I still show it to my friends they all laugh and giggle I feel happy for them sometimes I draw something from "draw so cute" and give to my friends they become really happy so do I.The thing is you practice and trying 1 day you will become an artist a famous artist
Moral : keep trying
Watch some art vids! Those always help me!
The syrup animation at the end is very calming and kind of satisfying
I finally handled it by starting on the last page until I feel strong enough to go to the first page. I feel really good about that discovery
*“IM A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH, A SHINY PEICE OF COAL”* idk I’m a Hamilton fan I had to
Your soo positive and thats one of the reasons Why i Love you❤️❤️
Others: Welcome to my Sketch book!
Me: Welcome to my Sketchbook!
Proceed if you dare..
Ooh that gives me a good idea 😂
Make it really ominous, like a haunted house or something! 😂
Great tips! It was so satisfying when you flipped the page and the marker didn’t bleed through. I am nuts for hardbound sketchbooks, I’ve been using strathmore but it looks like I’ll need to switch my brand!
"It didn't exist before you drew that". That sentence - I love it so much and it has helped me since I started drawing about a year ago!
Can’t sketch the first page?
Start on the second page.
Krissi Jimenez i always do that and i end up leaving my first page :D
And then when u have made a bunch of progress go and do the first page lol
uni weasley lol same
Hello! I hope you’re doing well!
I almost never use my first page. I leave it blank. Forever. I have serious first page anxiety. i'm also a page jumper. I like things to feel really random in my sketchbook. Putting the same kind of drawings back to back feels boring to me. I also tape in a lot of outside work that I do on scratch papers or stray watercolor papers, and I tend to tape those into the pages I don't like so much, bc im a firm believer of never ripping out pages form my sketchbooks. they arnt taped in so much that you can't see what I originally put on the page, but I do like that if someone flips to that page they see something I really like first, then when they lift up, they see my garbage lol.
for the sketchbook i'm about to finish i only wrote a note about art in a pretty font, to keep it simple
it really helped me to get over that "first spage fear"
Can I just say that you’re so motivational and calming??? I love you so much!
Amazing thx for the tips 😙😚 love you
Wow I’m early that’s rare! Excited to watch the video
I have 13 EMPTY note books in my desk for 2 years. This helped me a lot and inspired me. Thank you so much Waffles!
Btw, When I lightly draw and then trace I sometimes fall it jellybeaning.
Btw #2 you earned a new subscriber ;)
I normally watch u on my tv and I don’t have an account on there and I would like to thank you for your entertainment 🥺 and thank you for all the ideas 🥺 I wanna be just like you 🤗
I love how organized it is! Imma steal those techniques
Every artist like me always misses the first page WE ELITE
what i do is that i draw on my last page an “art progression” thing. i will draw the same thing, but from the first drawing, compared to the last drawing.
I just got a new sketchbook yesterday. Weird coincidence?
SkylaCatto I THINK NOT.
Clara ArtFarts I don’t know why ur comment made me laugh it just did 😂
Bad 1st page = a Monday.
Screw it, I’m just drawing Alyssa and James from end of the f ing world.
Omggg fangirl here
When your mom bought you a super high quality sketchbook when you were 6 and now only gives you printer paper: 👁💧👄💧👁
Sorry for some of the auto corrects . 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Mom buys me a new Sketch book, draws something, tears it out, starts over and does it again .I buy a new sketch book, waits hours then draws something I love.
Waffle: I don’t wanna draw on the yellow paper
Also waffle: makes her page yellow
What I like doing is finishing the first page last
I love this channel. It's so pure and your voiceovers are always so cute. Bless. ❤
THE LAST PART IS JUST SO SWEET AND WHOLESOME AHHHHH
