Whenever I'm in a sketchbook I think, "Wow! This is my best sketchbook yet!" And immediately after starting the next, the previous one looks terrible! Although I always keep my old sketchbooks because even if I did not execute an idea well, the idea is still in there. :)
Well when I finish a sketchbook I’m like “wow it looks like I didn’t even try..” then I finish my next one and I’m like “what happened? Shouldn’t I improve?!!??!!”
Waffles: "It's just a lot better then drawing four sketches on one page, in each corner of the page...that's just kind of bleh." Me: Yeah, who would do that? That is so bleh....I definitely do not do that. * Smiles Nervously *
When you know your arms grow out of one very interesting place (hint hint) and you know you can't draw normally, but just seeing other people sketching makes you be like: "WOW I GOTTA DRAW NOW"
Thank you for this! I'm always looking for new ways to snazzy up my sketches and sketchbook in general. Cause sometimes that white space can be I n t I m a d a t I n g You Know
Another tip is that you can achieve contrast by playing with colours. Colour all scetches with cold colours and only colour one with warm colours. This will immediately bring viewers eyes to the warm drawing. You can also colour other scetches lighty and only the best one full colour
Hey Waffles, I have a suggestion for you. You said a few years ago in your Rapunzel drawing that you didn't want to draw her crown because it was too complicated. Well, now that you've improved as an artist, why not draw the crown this year? Just a thought. 😋
DrawingWiffWaffles yes it has!!! :D Don’t want this comment to be shown to everybody so I wanna say here that you have inspired me so much and I have a sketchbook that is pretty much using all the techniques that you have shared with us! :3
Cram the page with as many doodles, sketches, finished illustrations and/or poems as you possibly can and I mean ALL the sketches! Once you've done that you can add some more sketches and maybe a couple more doodles. Just make sure every spare inch is full of something creative or doodle-y. okay i have to stop now but doodle-y is a word, I say it all the time. xD
I just started my 12th sketchbook, and I can say this was a huge inspiration, I'm definitely going to use some of the tips and tricks you listed in this video!
You are a goddess Waffles. My sketch books are so boring to look through so this helps! A lot! Also I love the idea of the interactive sketchbook with the flip up flaps love that. It makes it more fun!
I add comics to my sketchbooks... I don't know why, but I usually just get this urge to make a comic at least once with every sketchbook, and it sort of adds a fun something to interact with in there (if I let people read them). So yeah, there's an extra idea if you're interested in trying it out. Love all these ideas, I definitely plan on giving them a try!
I kind of think it's important to realize that a sketchbook, in the end, is for your own personal practice. At least if you don't plan to use it for your college application. It's not a good idea to limit yourself by pressuring yourself to draw well because people will look at it. That sort of defeats the purpose. That is not to say that the tips are bad, they are DEFINITELY helpful. I just think it's good to keep in mind that your sketchbook doesn't have to look like an art book print
I have recently started watching your uploads. I love your style and techniques, but... most of all your voice it is just so gentle and I can hear you are smiling. Keep it up.
DrawingWiffWaffles I also like how you say that you CAN put more detail in sketchbook sketches. All through high school my art teacher told me to not do detail in sketchbooks and only on finished works.
RIN! I'm so excited when you said "Graphic communications" because I'm studying that at Cal Poly Slo right now!!! You are such an inspiration to me and I love you!
DigitalNekkoDev I know I'm like really really late but that does not mean you have amnesia in art. You could just be burnt out from all the drawing....try to take a well deserved break..
It seems like you have a more product-based view of sketchbooks, which is totally cool, but I have a more learning based idea of sketchbooks and I think of sketching as practicing different things whenever I want to draw rather than filling sketchbooks. These are cool tips, and I could learn from them, but they don't really apply to me.
A long time ago after watching this video I have started to use color in some parts but mostly colorful sticky notes. It has brought so much confidence in trying to fill out a sketchbook. I’m so glad I ended up on one of your videos and continued to watch.
Ah such a nice sketchbook and great tips! The one with sticking sketches into the sketchbook is something that I started to do a while ago. Now My finished sketchbooks look even bigger than before :D but it´s so nice to look back at them and see improvement over the time
This is so perfect for me, as a person who doesn't usually draw finished pieces, but sketches instead. This can really push people out of their comfort zone and I think that's great.
just finished watching the video, opening my sketchbook trying to do these tricks and tips immediately. looking up on google on how to spell immediately. lol
You give the best tips! A lot of these tips are unique and I don't see them on other people's channels, but they are super helpful! Please do more of these videos! ( I also like it when you do the one color art supply challenge)
U are one of the first art you tubers I watch and I still watch you today. When I draw I am inspired by you. If you look at my drawings your art is somewhere in there
fun fact: i draw during lectures at school esp during math, and i've found that computing (n e at ly) on my sketchbook adds a really nice characteristic to it c:
5:10 that was the best tip for me... i mean i've been doing it for a long time.. it took time to fill a page but, a sketchbook with a fullpage drawing really make me feel awesome
Hey, I am a big fan! I have read many rude comments about you, this might be hard to take in, but probably more than the positive ones, you might have seen them, and if you have, know that your inspired fans will be the closest to you during the cruelest times, right there next to you. To make you smile, happy, and at the edge of the world! (Not literally because that is probably not a good thing). This situation is like nature; you are the plant, the haters are the pesky insects, and your fans are the beneficial insects, eating up and destroying the pests! (Sheesh that was violent) I’m not going to say you are talented, because you are not, you WORKED for it. An example is your Rapunzel drawings, the thing when you see how much you improved over the past five years? When I saw the videos, I might be blind, but I am pretty sure that each one is different. You worked on it. If you were talented or gifted with a skill of drawing, all of them would look practically the freakin’ same. NOONE is born with a talent, they work for the talent they chose to work for. So all in all, I love you, from the bottom of my heart, and be a Jolly and happy artist to the end, don’t stop until your last words! Good luck WiffWaffle! You are inspiring!
I just started watching you last night and I am impressed and ever since that night that I saw your videos I felt confident and I have been sketching alot ever since you are ok next of the best youtubers
I think it's interesting that you use the term contrast when some of the tips are more composition related, theres a lot of overlap of course! :) You seem to naturally be super good at creating compositions whereas that's something many people really struggle with.
This is very helpful! I think too often i'm always trying to make a finished work on every page, or i just hav my "quick sketch" pages. I like the idea of the washes, and filling more space with several sketches; some being just less fleshed out. I've been working with size contrast with my different sized microns. But i do think applying some of these tips will help add that little extra focus or pop where i need it. Btw just found your channel earlier this week and i love your work, and your personality, i immediately subscribed aftr 1 video. Looking forward to watching more!
You are such an amazing artist. I don't know what it is, but every time I look at your art I fall in love with it. It's always so cute! BTW this video was REALLY helpful! Thanks! 😊
DrawingWiffWaffles I have a question. I have like five pages left and have no idea what to to do with them. I always have lots of ideas when I start and none when I end. Should I just move on or continue to try to work on my current sketchbook?
I’ve been trying to find ways to help me find things to do in my sketchbook...and to be honest, none of them really helped me as much as this video did! Thank you so much for making this video and all your other videos, waffles!! I found your channel about a month ago and I literally have been binge watching all of you videos! And for some reason I always get hungry for waffles🤔 but thank you so much❤️❤️💕😘
"subDUDE" ha. This video was actually fun and informative!!! Doodle-y is a word (to me xp) whether people like it OR NOT!!! I often like adding watercolor washes in the background of my doodles because it looks so boring in black. Thank you again for inspiration and that added waffle-y ness (see, told you it WAS a word xD lol) in the video. This is me reminding you that a waffle a day keeps every doctor at bay, even the healthiest ones!
+Angel at Play hehe thanks for paying such close attention to my video. I feel so appreciated, you have no idea. Thank you! You're too cute. Thank you for your comment. I hope my art brings you at least a portion of the joy you've brought me.
Another thing I learned in graphic design: CARP!!! Contrast Alignment Repitition Proximity Of course, it was meant for typography and logos but u can find a way to incooperate it in ur art!
The Five Legit Steps into Making a Niceeeeee Sketchbook; 1. LEARN HOW TO DRAW NICE 2. That's it. 3. Yeah, it's just that. 4. Pretty much everything you need given in no. 1 5. Refer to no.1 again, please.
Actually gonna be honest... having the ability to draw nice is half the battle. Source, I’ve been drawing for like five years. Edit: but not professionally
Actually, sometimes the parts of a sketchbook that aren't well drawn look the best. Just blobs of paint, swatches, thumbnails, quick studies... Nicely drawn doesn't equal nice to look at.
I was gonna watch this rn but i feel like i should wait until tommorow when i get my new sketchbook idk wat to do :c EDIT: Miracle just happened... my sketchbook arrived in the mailll AHAHHAHA I LOVE ITTT
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really needed this because I can never finish a sketchbook- I just get so overwhelmed on how to make it look appealing. Love your works and keep it up! :D
Waffles, can you make another video on drawing methods. I really like that video but the way you did the pose isn't the easiest thing to draw. So can you do a different pose with the circle+line method thanks!
+CocoKitty you don't need to copy my sketches. This video was about techniques based on contrast. Lol you can do all of these tips in your own style with your own drawings! That's why I like these techniques!
O.O this is the best tips I’ve ever got! Now I’m just so inspired to complete 20 sketchbooks at once.. which is impossible, but you know what I mean! Thank you so much! And keep up the awesome work! :3
This is SO helpful because when I got my first sketch book I was like "Okay, every page needs to have a perfect drawing" now after watching this, I do a bunch of different things on each page, I even put post it's for mistakes
I personally enjoy the "Contrast in texture" the most since i like using tinted paper wich is slightly ticker and has a way different texture than my sketchbook and glue pieces into a composition i like, it really helps bring things together in my opinion
Even for full pieces contrast is really important, on my last assignment for my drawing class I was told that even though I had a LOT of elements to my drawing it still worked because of how I coloured areas to have a certain amount of contrast in order to catch your eye to what I wanted. (I also added varying amounts of detail to the painting) Of course the rule of thirds also helps with making people see what you want, I'd even say taking an applied graphics art course helped me with this since it's all about composition.
+Lindy thick paper. Just check the GSM on the sketchbook. You probably want 100lb or higher. Now you can shop all over the internet. The higher the GSM. The thicker the paper. You're welcome!
Lindy I ALWAYS buy it at a local art store because it ends up turning out the way I like it a lot more then one from online and also in my opinion it's just better quality (and I also like looking at the size irl instead of the internet)
I recently started using colour and texture in mine. Sketched in red pencil, went over that in pen, highlighted my favourite sketch with a yellow highlighter, added some washi tape and post it note sketches in the gaps. Then I did an ocean one so sketch in blue pencil add some blue highlighter in certain places, added some fish stickers and some ripped up paper with bubbles doodled on. I personally really like it and it was fun to do
I used to be really self-conscious about my sketchbook and want to "fix" it, and there's nothing wrong with that, but at the same time it's a SKETCHbook. Your space for you to sketch, be messy, jot things down, and improve ❤️ It's a space for you, not just others, and it's okay for things to be messy. Sometimes that's how things just are.
These are awesome ideas! And your drawings are extraordinary! Could you please make a tutorial with the way you draw mermaids? It's just so mesmerizing to listen to you talking about how they help you and I really want to learn how to draw them in that adorable, yet beautiful way that you do.
I have two sketchbooks, a hardcover one and a coil bound one. The coil sketchbook gets filled with whatever random thing i feel like doing whatever medium whatever art style or just testing out new supplies (though i take the page out) and the hard cover one is for more planned out, nicer pieces i would want people looking at more than the other one.
The last tip is my fav. I did that to a couple pages in one of my sketchbooks and they're my favorite pages. I find a girl attractive when she can draw.
last weeks video you sounded very, sad and upset. it really made me happy to see you so much happier in this one! I also wanna say, ive been using and loving some of your AMAziNg sketch booking skills :)
*"Did you just look at the red dot?"*
Me: N-no... *quickly averts eyes*
Lmao I did that too
Same edit: thanks for the likes 4 is the most I have ever gotten
i did not i was looking at your comment
I had already been looking in that particular spot when she put it there lol
Noko H. Same
You forgot the tip “draw good” which always ruins mine. 😎
+Kasey Golden why don't you actually "try" next time. XP 😉
DrawingWiffWaffles You Have too much hope for me.
Yeah, she KIND OF forgot to say that.
Im sorry.
Kasey Golden I can't seem to get it right either- my best drawings are always in my school textbooks :
Well sometimes it looks better on because of the lines (like how some drawings look better on toned paper)
Whenever I'm in a sketchbook I think, "Wow! This is my best sketchbook yet!" And immediately after starting the next, the previous one looks terrible! Although I always keep my old sketchbooks because even if I did not execute an idea well, the idea is still in there. :)
MyArtJourney Thats normal, amd it just means that you are improving so you should be proud
katarina cvetkovic Yes that too! It's very encouraging to go back and see the improvement. :)
Well when I finish a sketchbook I’m like “wow it looks like I didn’t even try..” then I finish my next one and I’m like “what happened? Shouldn’t I improve?!!??!!”
Same
MyArtJourney it's because you've improved while doing the first ointment
Waffles: "It's just a lot better then drawing four sketches on one page, in each corner of the page...that's just kind of bleh."
Me: Yeah, who would do that? That is so bleh....I definitely do not do that. * Smiles Nervously *
Haha anyways awesome video! u< I always get really inspired when you show your sketchbooks!
hehehe, hey, we've all done it. how else would I know what Im talking about. XP

Hey you could make the circle into something cool. I literally have a page with the structure of a body but nothing else. It's a very sad page.
Loink
Le sad page. Such sad. Wow. Many sorry. So sorrows.

Another tip is that you can achieve contrast by playing with colours. Colour all scetches with cold colours and only colour one with warm colours. This will immediately bring viewers eyes to the warm drawing. You can also colour other scetches lighty and only the best one full colour
Absolutely!! Both I'm sure would turn out wonderfully!
katarina cvetkovic ~ i don’t even have colors.
@Nadia Syeda okay, so I always see people talk about those online, but aside from blue and black, those are so hard to find, where do you get them?
Hey Waffles, I have a suggestion for you. You said a few years ago in your Rapunzel drawing that you didn't want to draw her crown because it was too complicated. Well, now that you've improved as an artist, why not draw the crown this year? Just a thought. 😋
ayeayeaye, has it come to this?
DrawingWiffWaffles yes it has!!! :D
Don’t want this comment to be shown to everybody so I wanna say here that you have inspired me so much and I have a sketchbook that is pretty much using all the techniques that you have shared with us! :3

+Ninjin Sugar I couldn't find my kneaded eraser I'm so sad!!!!!!
Oh my gosh this made me giggle.
I ALWAYS wipe of my notebook if I even TOUCH it with an eraser...is that just me orrr? Just me?? Ok.
Cram the page with as many doodles, sketches, finished illustrations and/or poems as you possibly can and I mean ALL the sketches! Once you've done that you can add some more sketches and maybe a couple more doodles. Just make sure every spare inch is full of something creative or doodle-y.

Dangit, Waffles! I saw saw your eraser dust on your table, and I literally blew on my cell phone screen to get rid of it.
+JinglesRasco I'm sorry! I'd lost my kneaded eraser. Haha
Lol
What kind of purple wizardly pencil is that? I need it. Where can I buy it?
I think its the Primacolour col-erase pencils :)
Hey do you know what markers she has used?
@@bajikeisuke3588 she definitely used master markers in this video, she made a whole review on them
Look at the description they usually have all the materials used
Guys Everything is given in the description!
I just started my 12th sketchbook, and I can say this was a huge inspiration, I'm definitely going to use some of the tips and tricks you listed in this video!
That was extremely well made!! Awesome stuff

me: *looks in s h a m e at a page of my skechbook with one doodle of an eye in the center* well then, gUESS IM DONE-
Lol. I actually have done that before. Sometimes being simplistic is artistic in of itself
Many people say to not care about how your sketchbook looks, but it's so rewarding to have a pretty sketchbook! I love making mine look pretty.
First. uh. Potatoes are ART.

Wow I didnt know you used that brand of sketchbook! Its looks like it holds well and doesn't ghost for the most part. And I can afford it too!
Its a great price! I use these sketchbooks a lot. I like to play around and buy different sizes all the time.
DrawingWiffWaffles I also like how you say that you CAN put more detail in sketchbook sketches. All through high school my art teacher told me to not do detail in sketchbooks and only on finished works.

that’s good
+Tony Flamingo I love a messy sketchbook! These tips just give a method to the mess. If that makes sense.
Lmao sammee!
DigitalNekkoDev I know I'm like really really late but that does not mean you have amnesia in art. You could just be burnt out from all the drawing....try to take a well deserved break..

I love going back in my book by adding or color them. It helps me find what I what I what to do.
Another thing I learned in graphic design: CARP!!!
Contrast
Alignment
Repitition
Proximity
Of course, it was meant for typography and logos but u can find a way to incooperate it in ur art!
Love this! I appreciate how you talked about techniques that didn't require costly supplies.
The Five Legit Steps into Making a Niceeeeee Sketchbook;
1. LEARN HOW TO DRAW NICE
2. That's it.
3. Yeah, it's just that.
4. Pretty much everything you need given in no. 1
Nicely drawn doesn't equal nice to look at.
omg this is like the first how to improve your sketchbook video thats been really helpful i love all ur tips✨
Was I the only one who noticed how much her style changed? Because I’m loving it!
i love that sketchbook its my favorite because of the size and paper quality lol, love you rin !!
I now want a sketchbook where I physically hurt the viewers eyes by adding a seperate contrast technique for each of the drawings
So glad I'm not the only one who tapes other sketches into my books lol
Learned some new ideas, thanks!
Great video, i find it very useful...thanks
Glad to help!
I cannot WAIT to see a tour of this sketchbook!! your sketchbook tours are my favorite and this one looks awesome so far!😆
I was gonna watch this rn but i feel like i should wait until tommorow when i get my new sketchbook idk wat to do :c
EDIT: Miracle just happened... my sketchbook arrived in the mailll AHAHHAHA I LOVE ITTT
aw Congrats mah duuuuuude~
Why did it come in the mail? Do u live where there’s no stores to buy one at the store?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I really needed this because I can never finish a sketchbook- I just get so overwhelmed on how to make it look appealing. Love your works and keep it up! :D
Anyone else finally watching everything in their watch later list in quarantine? I forgot what the old intro looked like it's so different!
Same
OMG yesssss that’s what I’m doing now
You have quite creative ideas projected onto your sketchbook. I quite enjoy the sheer simplicity of your cartoon style.
Ok thanks! And BTW i was talking about an older video you made it was, The Different Drawing Methods video.
O.O this is the best tips I’ve ever got! Now I’m just so inspired to complete 20 sketchbooks at once.. which is impossible, but you know what I mean! Thank you so much! And keep up the awesome work! :3
I’m early so I want to comment something smart but now I can’t come up with anything... Oh well, great video!
+What Now? You sound like a smart person to me. Hehe
This is SO helpful because when I got my first sketch book I was like "Okay, every page needs to have a perfect drawing" now after watching this, I do a bunch of different things on each page, I even put post it's for mistakes
jokes on you I focused on ONE red dot the whole time! :P
I personally enjoy the "Contrast in texture" the most since i like using tinted paper wich is slightly ticker and has a way different texture than my sketchbook and glue pieces into a composition i like, it really helps bring things together in my opinion
I needed this so much , my sketchbook is so messy
+kawaii unitato well these methods will give a method to the mess. Hehe I love a messy sketchbook.
Even for full pieces contrast is really important, on my last assignment for my drawing class I was told that even though I had a LOT of elements to my drawing it still worked because of how I coloured areas to have a certain amount of contrast in order to catch your eye to what I wanted.
(I also added varying amounts of detail to the painting)
Of course the rule of thirds also helps with making people see what you want, I'd even say taking an applied graphics art course helped me with this since it's all about composition.
I can’t find a good sketchbook but do you guys now some websites where you can buy good (with tick paper) sketchbooks?
+Lindy thick paper. Just check the GSM on the sketchbook. You probably want 100lb or higher. Now you can shop all over the internet. The higher the GSM. The thicker the paper.
You're welcome!
DrawingWiffWaffles Thank you! This helped me so much. I love your videos btw💗
If you are looking for websites try jetpens.com . I love their variety and I highly recommend purchasing from them.
Kaede Akamatsu Thank you!
Lindy I ALWAYS buy it at a local art store because it ends up turning out the way I like it a lot more then one from online and also in my opinion it's just better quality (and I also like looking at the size irl instead of the internet)
I just started a really small sketchbook, i actually use a ton contrast with color everywhere in it. Thanks for the others tips!
Second I think???
Waffles, this was super helpful, tysm
+Hannah C really!? Glad I could help!
I personally really like it and it was fun to do
Other People: *focusing on the video*
Me: How did she get a purple pencil? I want a purple pencil...
Wow! I love your work. Your style is just so unique and flowing.
My scetchbook: "Omg thank you so much for this! She finally uses me after Month aaaaa I'm feeling the creative love"
Hey! Just want you to know, you're still one of my favorite art UA-camrs. Hope you're doing well Waffles. ❤
Meanwhile:
Me: *draws stickman* That's perfect!
Sometimes that's how things just are.
your sketchbooks dont have to "Look good" btw , the purpose of a sketchbook is to improve and experiment :)
*Continues to listen to the tips while drooling over Waffles amazing art*
I Got a "Learn how to Draw" ad .-.
By Udemy ;3;
Thank you so much this has improved my sketchbook visually and my art from your other videos
Whenever I try to draw like you it always seems impossible very difficult it proves you are amazing at art
These are awesome ideas! And your drawings are extraordinary! Could you please make a tutorial with the way you draw mermaids? It's just so mesmerizing to listen to you talking about how they help you and I really want to learn how to draw them in that adorable, yet beautiful way that you do.
i love the progress her style has made
I have two sketchbooks, a hardcover one and a coil bound one.
+Its Lizz thanks for thinking about me. I appreciate it. We all go through ups and downs. Just push through.
