The Dustopper in a Vacuum - Is this the future of dust collection? We think so!

  • We are excited to finally show off The Dustopper ICS - An integrated cyclonic separator!
    The first Dustopper was created when we needed a low-profile separator that was easily mobilized from shop to job site…and was good at extending the life of expensive filters. When that worked, It didn’t take long and we began to dream about how great it would be to have a separator inside a vacuum; It would be easier to move around; adaptable to different shops and job sites; and would make cleaning up a lot faster, better and easier. Little did we know that putting a Dustopper inside a vacuum would drastically improve both separation and vacuum performance.
    The ICS modifies your RIDGID vacuum by placing a Dustopper separator inside. Thanks to this simple modification, we have streamlined the dust collection process by eliminating the bucket, extra hoses and elbows. One tool; one hose; and enough suction to take on the task of cleaning up dust better. That’s right, a dust collecting beast that makes cleanup one of the fun parts about a day in the shop. We can’t tell you how excited we are about this product, which will soon be available in an easy-to-assemble kit.
    We are excited to announce that Dustopper ICS, now formally in the patent process, is being tested by some of the best woodworkers and DIYers we know!
    Check our Instagram, Facebook and UA-cam channel often to see how our team of experts are putting Dustopper ICS to the ultimate challenge of cleaning up the worst of dust.
    More to come!

    Not sure I understand the benefit of this system? You say it keeps the filter clean. If I put a foam filter in my shop vac (with a cyclone) it does the same thing.

    • @thedustopper
      @thedustopper  Рік тому +2

      Great question! Say you put the foam pre-filter over the vacuum’s filter, you are still keeping both in the same space as the collected material. That means it is subject to 100% of the dirt and debris. It will still get caked up and you will fill the container to a point the vacuum doesn’t operate anymore. Our system uses our low-profile separator designs and separates over 99% of the dirt and debris before it reaches a separate chamber where the filter is housed. Now you can collect more debris, since the filter isn’t taking up space in the container, and you will be able to use your vacuum longer before having to dust off the foam pre-filter. So in summary, the benefits are: Now there is separation before the filter and the filter has its own chamber away from the main dirt and debris. Hope that helps answer your question!

      Yes! So we wanted to do several different design iterations before we finalized our patent application. The patent is in process and we expect to have prototypes to demonstrate by the summer. We know the technology works better than anything currently available, but we would like to work on form factor engineering, to ensure ease of operation and things of that nature. Good things coming!

This takes ICS it one step farther and compacts everything by removing the bucket.

    Hi. I’d seen this video before and looked for it to come back to because I think your concept is terrific. Adding a pre-vac dust separator to a system is great in most cases but has down-sides, including substantially increasing bulk, loss of suction and loss of flow. One good thing a first stage separator does is keep the vac filter from clogging up.
    Regarding the first of these, it looks like you’ve dramatically improved compared with the added bulkiness of a second container. But after that your demonstration falls flat.
    Regarding suction, you demonstrate “good suction” by putting your hand over the end of the hose. But you don’t tell us how this suction compares with the original shop vac? Does it maintain the original suction without loss due to leaks? Does it lose a bit? How about compared with the suction loss you see in a typical pre- separator set up?
    Neither do you show us if you’ve improved over the original Dustopper ( or other separators) in regards to loss of flow. How much time did it take to clean up that whole pile using your Dustopper ICS? How long would it take with just a shop vac with foam pre filter over the filter? How long would it take to pick up that pile using the Dustopper on a bucket connected to the shop vac?
    You conclude the video showing a clean filter and say that it’s all on account of the Dustopper ICS. What would the filter look like with just the foam pre-filter in a simple shop vac?
    For all we know, the stock shop vac with the pre-filter does just as much to keep dust out of the filter as your new assembly does.
    I like the idea for the product, you’ve just given us nothing to compare it to.

    • @thedustopper
      @thedustopper  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for taking the time to ask a lot of excellent questions! It sounds like you are extremely knowledgeable regarding vacuums and separators. This demonstration is just a teaser and proof of concept. Once a finalized version of the ICS is created, we will be answering every question in detail. We will then show the differences in water lift, flow restriction, CFM (using Dwyer instrumentation), and more. Stay tuned for more once the ICS is finalized!

      @@thedustopper I have to say, I really appreciate your reply. Im not in the business, just a homeowner, and look forward to your next video. I do have a couple of questions that have nothing to do with your video, if you don’t mind.
      1. How much height will the ICS add to a vac it’s added to?
      And 2. Will it be something you can retrofit a variety of vacs with? Or will this be specific to certain models?
      Thanks again!

    • @thedustopper
      @thedustopper  2 роки тому

      @@dsutter6 We are happy to answer those questions for you! The ICS is still a work in progress but we are constantly making improvements and updates that make it more compact and lighter. Height and weight continue to evolve for us as we are still testing and improving the ICS model. We are working on making it adaptable for multiple vacuums that are currently available in the market. We hope this helps!

    • @Goodoleme4144
      @Goodoleme4144 10 місяців тому

      Hi, my name is Tom Huntley and I am the patent holder of this device. There is a lot of confusion about the difference between suction and CFM. Suction does not change. Suction is the maximum pressure value achieved when the system is totally closed off. That’s a function of the motor horsepower and the tightness of the system. So if you measure suction on the vacuum before picking up 20 gallons of dust, and after picking up 20 gallons of dust, the inches of water left will be the same. In a conventional vacuum 100% of the dust could conceivably come in contact with the filter. With cyclonic preseparation only 1% or less of the dust could conceivably come in contact with the filter. So your comments about filter loading are not accurate. Between the separator and the filter we use the open cell foam to further reduce the amount of particulate that would ever have a chance of coming in contact with the filter. I can tell you from lab experiments here that we have picked up as much as 100 gallons of dust using this three step separation approach, and the CFM has dropped by less than 5%. In today’s conventional shop vacuum, the CFM begins to drop immediately after putting the filter into service. If you were to measure the CFM at the end of picking up just one tub of dust, it could indicate a loss of 50% or more, depending on the average diameter of the particulate. So, while the vacuum might be a little more bulky, the mean
      operating efficiency is far superior than a conventional vacuum. So yes, it will cost a little more to purchase, but it will have superior performance and over its lifetime. Will use a fraction of the number of filters used by a conventional vacuum.
