    Our shop vac is a cheap and powerful vacuum on wheels that you can use for any sawdust-producing tool in your shop. It has a dust separator, translucent sawdust bucket that shows you how full it is, electronics to automatically start and stop the vacuum when needed, and it is tiny. Did we mention it is also portable? This little vacuum cart can follow you anywhere and has all the power you need to capture saw dust at the tool before it gets all over your shop. I don't know why I have never thought to sand the decals off those buckets! I love the simple elegance of your design.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  4 роки тому +1

      Many thanks! Sanding the buckets really cleans them up and it was a lot easier than we thought it would be. Just use high-grit sandpaper so you don't tear out too much bucket material.

    Nice compact, low profile system. The "i-socket" not only lets the vacuum continue to run to clear the hoses after the tool is turned off, it also delays the vacuum's start-up so that the tool and the vacuum aren't starting at the same time causing a circuit overload and tripping your electrical breaker. A couple of small and economical vacuums positioned around the shop are far less costly than a single central dust collection system and the associated ducting throughout the shop. You just have to empty a couple of small buckets rather than hauling out a big container or bag.

    Nice build. I REALLY like the small form factor. Problem with using that with my SawStop Jobsite table saw is that I can't run the saw and shop vac on same 15a circuit or I continually trip my breaker. But for router table and chopsaw it should work great.

    Great project. Wondering about making the i-Socket Switch cost effectively without an MCU. Current sense to switch a relay with an MCU or am I over thinking where can just use a relay that will switch with whatever is plugged in maybe via a transformer or custom rolled transformer? Dunno offhand... UA-cam fatigue and other projects on hand. Cool triple play of your projects! Thinking can homebrew the dustopper also. Making a DIY PAPR for welding, I found a neat idea that isn't as messy as plastic welding for connecting plastic hoses... using old plastic bottles and a heatgun. That's all. Maybe some duct tape on the seam if you'd like. Will have to look into the headgear. Military surplus like university surplus can be handy. Testing the gloves and genIII level 7 extreme cold weather stay puff marshmellow man gear and is working great. Have to see how the gloves stand up though.

    • @AtomicDairy

      We thought about making the switch ourselves but the cost of parts was so close to the cost of the one we could buy we just used the purchased one. Same for the dust separator. There are many great designs out there but the Dustopper was too simple to try to replicate.

    Nice build! I like how you kept the connection hose short, but I'm wondering if the 2 90° elbows negatively affects the efficiency.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  4 роки тому +2

      We thought the same thing but we needed a short cart and the distance is so short that we figured the efficiency loss would be small enough to be acceptable. So far it's been working great.

    That's a nice setup and it's too bad Shop Vac folded last week since their bucket top vacuum was the best I had used. I bough the one from the Orange Box Store and it's float didn't work and it blew water other through the motor and only a 1.25 inch inlet so I couldn't use any other hoses. Also aware that you used stuff you had but instead of hose pvc pipe and elbow are an idea.

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 роки тому

      I hadn't thought of using PVC. I may use that for a future vacuum project.

      Oops, sorry. Just added the Dustopper dust separator link in the parts list above. It's from Home Depot and has been very effective in our shop. We have this one plus a dedicated one on our miter saw. They have all but eliminated our need to change the filter on our shop vacs. Fern I can address your issue of the saw dust showing up in you vacuum side, you have a leak some where in either the Thein Baffle side or the vacuum side, a way to trouble shoot for leaks is buy some incense sticks I use 3 at the time to generate smoke then move the sticks around joints and connection points. I have built many dust collection systems from home brew cyclones to baffles. Anytime saw dust was found on the suction side it was because of a leak. I hope this helps. Oh if you can use smooth hose in the inside and as few bends as possible to keep the parasitic drag to minimum.

  • @fogsmart
    @fogsmart 2 роки тому +1

    My 5hp shop vac looses a lot of suction with dust stopper type devices. I’d be wary of a 1.75 peak hp bucket motor

    • @fogsmart

      Make sure bucket is well sealed for a closed system (and the bucket is tough enough not to implode).

      We used a PowerLid vacuum. Here's the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FVZ91D6 It uses the bigger tubes but the one that comes with it plugs into the larger hole but uses a smaller tube.

  • @mattmerriam187

    I purchased one of these and noticed that it comes with a 1 1/4 inch hose did you get the 2 inch hose separately?

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  4 роки тому

      Our dust separator came with a 2-inch hose that we shortened and used for this project. The vacuum came with a 1 1/4-inch hose but we didn't need it since we had the larger hose from the dust separator.

    what is the HP ???? I know it has 6.5 AMPS

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  4 роки тому

      There has been some discussion on that. We were told 3HP but others have pointed out that 6.5 AMPS puts in in the 1-2 HP range. I believe the commenters with 1-2 HP, but so far it has been powerful enough for the jobs we have used it for. Maybe not for something that generates a lot more sawdust, like a planer, though.

    $35 for that bucket "shopvac"? It sounds like a good deal, but I picked up my 5.5 or 6.5hp (can't remember now. But it's a nonsense number anyway) stainless 12 gallon bucket Shop-Vac brand shopvac for $5 more. And it included casters, attachments, etc. Not to mention a far greater capacity and durability. Last Black Friday at Lowes, normally $99, on sale for $40. But don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to piss vinegar on your project, I only wanted to say that with a little patience, one could score a solid shopvac at very little cost

    • @AtomicDairy
      @AtomicDairy  3 роки тому

      Agreed, there are deals all the time. We went with this one because it was cheap, had a very low form factor that we needed for the shop, and was powerful enough for what we needed. But we agree there are lots of ways to do this right.
