CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Bart (Cleavon Little) rides into town as the new sheriff, the citizens are stunned.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Vulgar, crude, and occasionally scandalous in its racial humor, this hilarious bad-taste spoof of Westerns, co-written by Richard Pryor, features Cleavon Little as the first black sheriff of a stunned town scheduled for demolition by an encroaching railroad. Little and co-star Gene Wilder have great chemistry, and the delightful supporting cast includes Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, and Madeline Kahn as a chanteuse modelled on Marlene Dietrich. As in Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and High Anxiety (1977), director/writer Mel Brooks gives a burlesque spin to a classic Hollywood movie genre; in his own manic, Borscht Belt way, Brooks was a central player in revising classic genres in light of Seventies values and attitudes, an effort most often associated with such directors as Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich . Some of this film's sequences, notably a gaseous bean dinner around a campfire, have become comedy classics.

How many times have I seen this scene, still funny as CLANG!!
I like how the trumpet dies off with the funny note right when they realize who he is? LOL that was the funniest part
PKA (Episode with guest GOODBADFLICKS) was right. A comedy like this would never happen to in today’s world
Never Be Made Today ! Too Many Crybabies
Watch him in... "Vanishing Point." 1972? Talented, he was.
they did have black cowboys an sherrifs back in the cowboy days but hollywood didnt show that as we were growing up and i think mel brooks knew about it he even asked a new up an coming richard pryor should he use the n word in blazing saddles he said yeh do it but all of history that was never taught in schools in my generation wasnt taught but this is a classic great movie
Excuse me while I whip this out.
Aaahhhh!
Oh...
As Obama would say, "Excuse me, Boehner and McConnell, while I whip this out."
Awwww they left out the best part
Son you're on your own...plus when he holds a gun to his head "Do as he say, do as he say"...
Should've extended the clip a couple more seconds, "Son, you're on your own!"
And the next couple of lines when the Sherrif grabs his own neck, says " No one move or I'll kill this N***'" and we hear " Do what he says, he means it!"

False alarm, wink!
I think that and _"Hey - where are the white women at?"_ are the two FUNNIEST LINES in the whole flick!
This should be Obama's starting speech in the White House.

Having the welcome sign roll up was a stroke of genius
That's what they call a really great sight gag!
Yeah, kinda like The coyote the roadrunner...

It's made better by him rolling it back down so confidently.
What was genius about it was how sly the white man was that made it go up.

Mel Brooks is a genius.
Agreed. His funniest films came out in the 70s and have stood the test of time in my honest opinion. Blazing Saddles is defo one of them.
One thing Mel Brooks is not is PC.
Tell it Martell!
So was Richard Pryor
Mel Brooks is awsme
all of you claiming racism on this one. Richard Pryor wrote 90% of the script. the launguage is supposed to be sarcastic not racism.
Edit: Everyone saying you didn't see any comments on people claiming racism, is because You Tube removed the original conversation that I commented on a couple years ago. It was a conversation between two guys who one believed the racism was intentional and they didn't need it for the movie. The other individual was in belief that the sarcastic way racism was used made the jokes more of a social commentary. They both threw around a lot of "n" words at each other & You Tube removed it.
Yep, it makes fun of racism the same way Mel Brooke made fun of Hitler by dressing up as him and rapping.
Brooks consulted with Pryor,Little & McGregor on use of the "N"word in the script & to their credit the 3 aforementioned gents had no problem with it.Also the performers who used the word weren't real life racists. They actually felt uneasy using that word in front of McGregor & Pryor but they put them at ease explaining why they could use it and had their backs.
An afterthought to what I posted.I wonder if John Hillerman apologized to his Magnum P.I.co-star Roger E.Mosley about his use of the N word in the movie.I'm betting that Roger thought it was funny.
Apparently Pryor focused most of his writing on Mongo (Alex Karras). Mel Brooks said he loved the character.
Get the DVD with Mel Brook commentary. It makes the film funnierafterlistening to his stories.
He wanted Richard Pryor to be Sherrif Bart. But couldn't due to Mr. Pryor's drug problems made him to unreliable for the schedule.
In the long run I think Cleavon Little made the part.
The guy falling off his chair is priceless.
That's like seeing an Alien today walking past you casually lmfao
He needs to take the chair back to Walmart and get a refund!!!!!
The Sherriff IS A Nxxxx.
I think that Mel Brooks IS Priceless!
It wasn't the chair's fault, he was leaning back in it just like in elementary school!
I like how the dude keeps his cool...despite their expressions..."cuse me while I whip this out..." lol
LMAO! And remember the part when he makes it all the way to his office after out-witting the locals? :
"Oh baby, you are SO TALENTED........and they are SO DUMB!"
:D
Richard Prior wrote that scene lol
A funny movie and scathing social commentary rolled into one. Great stuff.
+Stila Webb "A funny movie and scathing social commentary rolled into one" that is exactly right. people just don't get it.
On what is it a greater commentary, the real racism that was even then dying out, or the modern woke sensibilities that today imagine racism where there is none.
@@odysseusrex5908 No, it's a commentary on how even Christians don't give a damn about their holy book they claim to cherish so much whenever it conflicts with their personal prejudices.
And as a Canadian whose country is in turmoil over a history of quieter racism, the quiet racism is as deadly as the in your face racism.
@@odysseusrex5908that is it, racism is over
The moment you think this scene couldn't get more offensive the bible gets blasted, hahahahahahaha.
I was wondering what they shot. I heard their guns go off, but the video was cut off right then. I figured they didn't shoot the sheriff.
It showed the Bible getting shot, but it cut out where the preacher turns to the sheriff and says, "Son, you're on your own."
😂😂👍🏻👍🏻
Son...you're on your own.
I've pranked all 4 of my nieces telling them that when I got elected Sheriff, some of the town was mad about it and when someone shot the Bible out of the Preacher's hand before he could give the Invocation,he looked at me & said "Son,you're on your own!"
They all believed me.
I genuinely believe this to be the most perfectly written and executed scene of comedy in any entertainment. Not because of the racism (though that gives it context). It's the deliveries, the body and facial language, the timings, and even sound design, all beautifully synthesized.
BANG ON !!!!✌👍👏😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂g
This whole movie was perfectly written and executed 😂
Ditto 😅
"Now who can argue with that? I think we're all indebt to BullockDS for stating what needed to be said. I am particularly glad that these lovely children are here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed the courage little seen in this day and age. "
Epic dialogue! Straight to the point. What's the problem?
My grandpa went to high school with Cleavelon Little. He told my that he was the kid who use to star in all the plays and hap a lot of school spirit
Yes indeed. It's a DAMN CRYING SHAME the colon cancer that took Cleavon Little's life in October 1992 wasn't caught earlier (he was only 53 when he died).
;-(
Sad shame, yes.
Doubt it that's as believeable as saying you saw Bigfoot.
No he didn't quit lying bot
@@dewolf123 STFU FFS, STOP SPAMMING BOT EVERYWHERE, WHO EVEN PARENTED YOUR DUMBASS!!
Cleavon Little was such a talented, funny and charismatic actor. You would think that after he was so entertaining in Blazing Saddles that his career was going to skyrocket. I saw an interview years later where he talked about that same expectation. Basically silence. He returned to New York and found his true love to be on the stage. He said that he loved developing the character throughout the run of the play. He said every show was a little different because you can experiment with adding or subtracting subtle nuances of the character. But he said you do your scenes in movies and move on. Sad he never got more chances in Hollywood. He said stage work was the first time he was really happy. So it's nice the way he found what truly made him happy and got to do it for years. He always had ulcers and digestive problems and sadly died of colon cancer at the age of 53 years old.
He definitely could have made it in Hollywood... But it's good that he found what he truly loved doing
Wasn't he also in National Lampoon's Vacation as the giving Clark directions to his cousin Jack while his friends were stealing the hub caps off the Family Trickster?
@@russellj.s.257I didn’t see that film listed in IMDB.
You are going to make me look at Vacation just to make sure. I have seen Vacation about as many times as I have seen Blazing Saddles and I think I would have noticed him…But he could have slipped by me.
Edit: Okay I looked at that scene and it was not Clevon Little. But it did sound like him just before you saw the character.
It's funny, he's so recognizable I feel like I've seen him in a hundred things, but I guess not.
He also co-starred alongside Richard Pryor in the movie Greased Lightning based on the life of race car driver Wendell Scott.
'Scuse me while I whip dis out....
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
That's comedy gold! XD
Phil Mante haha
Takes out paper. Disappointed groan.
This is how you handle racism, even in the 1970s they knew it was serious but they made it into something productive.
This is how you successfully poke fun and sterilize the conflictions of racism, truning into a joke. Which I personally don't see anything progressive in that. How ever it is undeniably entertaining but should not be rendered as the "solution" to inoculating racism within its American enclave.
@@Bennahr_Fett so true, Americans will always try to diminish all the brutal acts visited on the American Indians and the African Americans. They are fighting the teaching Critical Race Theory as we speak.
This is hilarious. It's not racist, it's making fun of racism.... The political correctness NAZIS would never allow Mel Brooks to make this movie, today!
cowgirlmoon They would've threw him in a concentration camp because Mel is Jewish.
Actually; this is the type of comedy many liberals would want to get out there to try and make a difference through humor. The bizarre concept of political correctness was made up by the corporate media to stir up people in the right side of the isle for news ratings. What is political correctness anyway? The term itself is a misnomer. Everyone has slightly different politics and there are some with very different politics. With that being said; what is politically correct to one group of people may not be politically correct to another group of people. If two gay people get married; that isn't "politically correct" to a conservative. If people argue that this country was not founded on Christian principles; but, was founded to accept all religions and be a safe haven from theocracy; that is not politically correct to a conservative. If somebody spitefully uses the "n" word out of malice and anger; that is politically incorrect to both moderates and liberals. If it is done in a show to either make fun of racism or show how terrible it is; then, most liberals like myself have no problem with it. I love this movie and I'm as liberal as they come. I think the film is hilarious! Notice that I am watching clips from it. Back to my point. How can you label anything as "politically correct" when everyone's political beliefs are different? What is politically correct to group A may not be politically correct to group B and vice versa. Executives are to blame for what people perceive as political correctness; not liberals. Executives are afraid to offend anyone who might be a consumer of theirs, fear for their bottom line, and only care about what makes shareholders happy (which is profit of course- nothing else). Contempt for corporate executives is something people on both sides of the isle can come together on and agree on. It's one thing we have in common. Executives, corporations, and commercialism are what is killing Hollywood; not Internet file sharing or political correctness. Those two things are just excuses.
cowgirlmoon "these are Liberals, who are calling this Mel Brooks, masterpiece, "racist"" Who is calling it racist? You're doing exactly what Jonathan is saying - you're yelling about how it's "politically correct" to say this movie is racist, yet no one here is saying that, except you.
ImTheSecretSquare Yelling? Your statement is dishonest in your intent, or in the ignorance of embellishment and so, your opinion holds no validity.
lol, says the person who claimed people are calling this movie racist when they are not, in fact, doing so. Since you are being dishonest, we can then conclude by your logic that your opinion holds no validity.

And Richard Prior it was a collab.
@@Jack29151 Ahh yes, you are correct there. I forget the story of how it came about. If Mel Brooks had the original script and then asked Richard Pryor to add his thoughts to it or if they wrote it together.
I agree. His contemporary now is Larry David. Curb your Enthusiasm is an excellent series!
I think Richard was also going to play Bart initially, but (from one story I have heard, anyway) Warner Bros. was skittish about Richard's raunchy nightclub act. They probably thought, "We are already getting an R rating here. Let us not push it."
