There was still a chance to save the Nexus after Summerslam but it was just getting worse for them. Cena costed Wade a world title win and later when Cena was supposed to be fired, he continued to mock the Nexus on a weekly basis until he buried Wade under chairs. Cena literally made sure that nothing these guys did had any meaning.
It was Cena felt terrible the way he ruined the Nexus vs WWE storyline so as for punishment he lost every single match at SummerSlam for each member of the Nexus group that was buried that night by Cena
He lost six times for seven Nexus Members before he one again 2011 to Punk 2012 to Punk 2013 to Bryan 2014 to Lesnar 2015 to Rollins 2016 to Styles 2017 he beat Corbin 2021 to Roman
It still amazes me that people believe the Nexus Conspiracy Theory. According to Jericho's third book, The Best in the World...of what I have no idea, Vince McMahon booked the Nexus to lose the match. Him, Edge & Cena discuss HOW the Nexus should lose, to which Cena came up with the concrete spot in the match. That was why he apologized after the match was over. Unfortunately, due to some misunderstanding on a podcast episode, some fans believe that Nexus were supposed to win, but Cena changed the match and BURIED the Nexus. Had Daniel Bryan won the match instead of Cena, would we be saying that Daniel Bryan buried the Nexus? 🤔 Also, as cool as the Nexus were, they were basically The Alliance 2.0 from 2001. The Alliance won their first PPV match at Invasion, and nothing came of it. Hypothetical speaking, even if the Nexus won at SummerSlam, they would eventually lose at Survivor Series, and we still would have had Wade Barrett vs. John Cena at TLC. Yes, the Nexus should have won at SummerSlam. There is no doubt about it. But let's not pretend that there was this grand conspiracy to stop their momentum. This is just another reason why Vince McMahon needed to step down.
If younger fans who think Cena is that GOAT want to know why CM Punk's pipebomb is held in such high regard, it's because of this. Summerslam 2010 started a run for John Cena which lasted right up until MITB 2011 where he was booked at his absolute worst: 1) No-selling a DDT on concrete 2) "Juan Cena" 3) Being forced to join the Nexus which changed absolutely nothing about his character 4) Being in one of the worst WM main events with the Miz 5) Being in one of the worst "I Quit" matches in WWE history where he no-sold a 20 minute beatdown from Miz and Riley, only to make Miz say "I quit" immediately after slapping on the STF. 6) Being in a throwaway, predictable main event with R-Truth at Capital Punishment. This run of Cena hurt the careers of all the members of the Nexus, none moreso than Wade Barrett and it made Miz and Riley look like absolute chumps. CM Punk's promo where he told Cena that he only has his position because he kisses Vince McMahon's ass really felt like he was speaking for the fans.
This was around the time I stopped watching WWE. I would still check the result on wrestleview, but I didn't really start getting back into until I started watching your channel.
Hey Brain i remember watching that episode of tough enough with Steve Austin and Cameron when she said her fav match was fox vs Melina i remember laughing at Steve's face when he heard i think Cameron should have pick anyother match like one of his matchs anyway thanks for useing that clip 😄
What exactly is the logic behind Daniel-Brian Bryanson returning as a FACE, exactly? Yes, he was face when he was arguing with Miz on NXT, but he had in fact aligned with Nexus, and he was fired by WWE (so why join team WWE?) for doing a despicably heelish act in choking Justin Roberts. Why is he turning on his former mates here? It seems much more logical (in retrospect) for Bryan to be the surprise return that gets the Nexus the win, and then he and Barrett can clash for leadership of the group, and eventually they gang-stomp him and that turns him face. There's no need to give him his climactic win over Miz so soon. Heck, he could even be the one to end Miz's upcoming World title reign. (Instead of Cena, ad infinitum ad nauseam) JMO.
Because in storyline, it was explained that The Nexus beat up Daniel Bryan backstage, and kicked him out of the group, off screen, for showing remorse for what The Nexus did. That is why they brought Daniel back as a babyface in this. To get revenge on The Nexus.
@@terrysnow5326 An off-screen argument, followed by an off-screen beat-down, leading to an off-screen face turn??? Triple lame!!! When did they announce this, anyhow? During the time Danielson was "fired" (was he rehabbing an injury?) or when he showed up at SummerSlam, or afterwards? Ridiculous that they couldn't have taken the time to show it to the fans, at whatever pace worked. It's not as if Yes Boy actually saves Super Cena's butt here, so there's no need to do his turn now, anyhow. (John is already dealing with untrustworthy allies in Edge and Jericho and potentially Miz…a DB who was just working with the other team wouldn't seem to clarify things much, IMO.) Also, how was Danny Boy "hanging out backstage" with Nexus if he'd been "fired", anyhow? I'd think part of being "fired" is you're not allowed in the building, right? Oy, vey.
Why not Lita vs Trish Status main eventing on Raw, WM22 Trish Stratus vs Mickey James, Chyna vs Jeff Jarrett at No Mercy 99, or any Mickey James vs Melina match. Instead it’s Alicia Fox vs Melina.
Quick correction. This wasn’t the Melina vs Alicia fox Cameron mentioned. She said it was on Smackdown June 19, 2009 over a year before this match at Summerslam 2010
In a sea of rose tinted commentary it is absolutely worth recognising Cena buried way more talent and damaged way more careers than he ever helped, even with that sham of a US title run.
It's crazy looking back, The Nexus debut literally made me stop watching wrestling (or at least its the last thing I remember before Mania 30), and I mean I was like 17 at the time, but for some reason watching them tear apart the ring disgusted me.
I still liked Kane in the sense back then, cause he finally not only became World Champion that either wasn't a day, or ECW. He was the main man for once. Bur also wining a feud vs Undertaker? Good shit.
I like to bring up the comparison here again to your Unforgiven 04 review, where you give it D with a 4 & 4,5 star rating. But here the highest are 3 stars with a D+
Disagree with your take on the Kane turn. That explanation promo on Smackdown where Kane documented how Taker had become progressively weaker over the years, leading to him finally showing sympathy to HBK in the retirement match was one of the most creative segments of the whole Taker/Kane saga. The matches sucked, but the way they got there was brilliant.
I'm looking forward to this. As someone who attended that whole run of LA SummerSlams, this was the worst by far due to the booking of the main event and 2 title bouts ending in DQ.
Fun fact in the same season of tough enough of the infamous cameron favorite match segment Alicia fox sister Christina was also a participant she placed 4th place and was the last women eliminated for not showing charisma
You can really tell which members of the Nexus that WWE management actually liked based on how quickly they were eliminated. Ideally, I think not only should the Nexus have won, but they should've swept the team (maybe because of those egos that Barrett mentioned).
Remember when a DDT on the concrete was an angle to write someone off tv? Now Cena can take it (on top of a beat down by Edge and Jericho) and go on to win with a huge smile on his face.
So how did Taker get into the casket, was it some sort of movie magic despite being live? Also for this angle I just remember them repeating "vegetative state" ALL THE TIME. Ever think about doing a retrospective of the original NXT seasons or any of the other Tough Enough seasons (particular the Austin one and the last revival)? 22:16 Wait I thought NXT was always on TV until the last season or two? I remember watching the first 3 seasons on TV
For as surprising as Daniel Bryan's return is, it's kinda funny how in storyline, this sorta feels like a deus ex machina of sorts. They never really had him explain why he's suddnely against the Nexus after being with them originally. Did Barrett fire him after the tie incident or something? It's Big Show-esque booking in a way. XD
It was actually explained. The 10 second explanation: Bryan felt bad things went as far as they did, and Barrett fired him for showing weakness and compassion.
@@BoogalooBartholomew yeah pretty weak explanation. Another way they could have gone would have been have Daniel cost Cena the match and help Nexus win. I know Daniel was more positioned as a babyface but could have been a clever ploy and made Barrett not look like a chump
I was on a wrestling hiatus during this period, it still blows my mind that Undertaker and Kane not only had a feud during this period, but it was for the World Heavyweight Championship, in which Kane was the defending champion.
The fact that Cena had final say over Vets like Edge and Jericho shows just how powerful that man was in terms of who he wanted to be booked to win or lose.
Not much. Barrett is clearly injury prone because every time they tried to push hm he got injured and was out for months and Barrett was about the only talented one in the group
Michael coles notes being that way makes sense jim ross and jerry the king lawler have spoken and have said they like to know the least because the commentators will pass it off as real as possible thats genius as far as story telling goes
Daniel Bryan really shined in the main event match From eliminating Darren Young quickly to showing off his amazing in ring skills when Cena tagged him in and basically went ballistic on Heath Slater with his kicks and flips and crossface
Was there a different Nexus survivor series match featuring the Nexus? I remember a match where Skip was doing the same 'demolishing everyone' shtick before Kane- who wasn't even legal-, grabbed him over the ropes, chokeslammed him and Skip went down like a sack of bricks
This was the first PPV following 2008 crash I got permission to watch and although in hindsight it was bad booking at the time I was a huge cena mark so this was hype af. 😂❤️
I was at the Raw a couple weeks after this on the 30th and they did try to give them some credibility back when they took out Undertaker that night, but looking back at it now it was way too late.
I always found it weird that Mysterio vs Kane wasnt a casket match cause then having it there at ringside would make more sense and could have the cool reveal still happen at the end minus mysterio in the ring. Melina would only have one more ppv match after this which was at Night of Champions and would be her last appearance on PPV till the 2022 Royal Rumble. Also The Nexus suffered so much from this match that the group wasnt even together a year later and in fact had Wade v Daniel Bryan on the card. The only 2 from that Nexus side to even be on ppv. Also also out of everyone in that main event who was on the card the next year. Cena, Wade, Daniel Bryan, Morrison & Truth. Jericho was gone before 2010 ended, Edge retired in 2011, Bret Hart wasnt really making appearances, Other than Wade all the nexus members were nowhere near the card, injured or gone from the company CM Punk's Summerslam's were quite weird also but this one here is one of two where he wasnt in a title match of some kind (The other was in 2013 against Brock Lesnar) but also this Summerslam was his dud inbetween two hot angles on either year. In 2009 he was in the main event with Jeff Hardy and 2011 he was facing Cena for the WWE Titles on the line.

I appreciate your call out for slater. I never noticed that detail
Should’ve had The Nexus attack some of the Raw celebrity guest hosts 😂
Frankly, they should've also attacked SmackDown guys. "Team WWE" was basically "Team RAW", and I don't care otherwise.

Also, as cool as the Nexus were, they were basically The Alliance 2.0 from 2001.
Just noticed the spinner fruity pebbles in the background entrance 😂
NXT replaced ECW on Syfy
If younger fans who think Cena is that GOAT want to know why CM Punk's pipebomb is held in such high regard, it's because of this. Summerslam 2010 started a run for John Cena which lasted right up until MITB 2011 where he was booked at his absolute worst:
1) No-selling a DDT on concrete
2) "Juan Cena"
3) Being forced to join the Nexus which changed absolutely nothing about his character
4) Being in one of the worst WM main events with the Miz
5) Being in one of the worst "I Quit" matches in WWE history where he no-sold a 20 minute beatdown from Miz and Riley, only to make Miz say "I quit" immediately after slapping on the STF.
I still think Cena is the GOAT. Womp womp.

13:37 The picture list is probably the celebrities in attendance so the announcers will say the correct name when they appear on camera.
(John is already dealing with untrustworthy allies in Edge and Jericho and potentially Miz…a DB who was just working with the other team wouldn't seem to clarify things much, IMO.)
Also, how was Danny Boy "hanging out backstage" with Nexus if he'd been "fired", anyhow? I'd think part of being "fired" is you're not allowed in the building, right?
Oy, vey.
That tombstone @15:44 looks hella gnarly.

"My favorite match was with Melina and Alicia Fox" 💀💀💀

Stone Cold Steve Austin: …
Thank god I didn’t watch tough enough 2011.
Why not Lita vs Trish Status main eventing on Raw, WM22 Trish Stratus vs Mickey James, Chyna vs Jeff Jarrett at No Mercy 99, or any Mickey James vs Melina match. Instead it’s Alicia Fox vs Melina.
Austin was dumbfounded lmao
4:30 I guess Edge eating it is good product placement/corporate synergy like you said considering he was in a Slim Jim commercial at this time.
Lot of this era was Freddie Prinze Jr as a writer and he cried that punk said his writing sucked. Well....
It's crazy looking back, The Nexus debut literally made me stop watching wrestling (or at least its the last thing I remember before Mania 30), and I mean I was like 17 at the time, but for some reason watching them tear apart the ring disgusted me.
Thank you for calling out the survivor series syndrome where suddenly, transition moves are enough to beat people again and again.

Love Empire Strikes Back comparison
22:17 Fun Fact: in Mexico, NXT (the rookie-mentor version) was on FX, i still remember seeing at 9:00 Family guy, then American dad and NXT in the end
But here the highest are 3 stars with a D+
ik this might be a hot take but as a fan of kane i liked how he got a decent run as whc after years of odd booking
NXT was on ScFy at the time it took over ECW's timeslot and was on there through Season 3 before it went online exclusive
Fun fact in the same season of tough enough of the infamous cameron favorite match segment Alicia fox sister Christina was also a participant she placed 4th place and was the last women eliminated for not showing charisma
That was not fun, I should sue you under the trade descriptions act.
You can really tell which members of the Nexus that WWE management actually liked based on how quickly they were eliminated.
Ideally, I think not only should the Nexus have won, but they should've swept the team (maybe because of those egos that Barrett mentioned).
Agreed
I wouldn't say sweep but definitely should have won
18:14 - "20011" sounds like a Jon Bois story that has yet to be made
Jon Bois is a living legend
Team Cena gave me the enemy of my enemy is my friend vibes
Remember when a DDT on the concrete was an angle to write someone off tv? Now Cena can take it (on top of a beat down by Edge and Jericho) and go on to win with a huge smile on his face.
This was the night i quit watching wreatling as a teen. Couldnt handle cena killing nexus like he did. Returned to wrestling 6 years later lol
NXT i believe was on SYFY at the Time
So how did Taker get into the casket, was it some sort of movie magic despite being live?
XD
According to Barrett, Bryan had regrets for the attack, and they kicked him out of the group
I know Daniel was more positioned as a babyface but could have been a clever ploy and made Barrett not look like a chump
ok but the slushies that were produced for the promotion of this show are an A+
Not gonna lie. The feud Cena had with the Nexus got me back into wrestling as a kid.
I was on a wrestling hiatus during this period, it still blows my mind that Undertaker and Kane not only had a feud during this period, but it was for the World Heavyweight Championship, in which Kane was the defending champion.
I’ve been outta the game for almost 20 years. It’s great to be back
The fact that Cena had final say over Vets like Edge and Jericho shows just how powerful that man was in terms of who he wanted to be booked to win or lose.
He was pretty much John Cena Hogan during this time
“I said what I said” yes you did sir, yes you did 😂😂😂😂

Not much. Barrett is clearly injury prone because every time they tried to push hm he got injured and was out for months and Barrett was about the only talented one in the group
Melina got injured in Manchester NH that time. And I still remember what I yelled when I saw her. "Walk it off!!!"
I'm with Zane here, 20011 was probably WWE's worst year.
Michael coles notes being that way makes sense jim ross and jerry the king lawler have spoken and have said they like to know the least because the commentators will pass it off as real as possible thats genius as far as story telling goes
NXT was still on Syfy at that point didn’t go online till season 3
Funny how I remember thinking that Raw episode up until The Nexus debuted was one of the worst I had ever seen and then that moment saved it
Which was more of a mismatch: Team WWE v Nexus or Team WWE v Team WCW/ECW?
Daniel Bryan really shined in the main event match
From eliminating Darren Young quickly to showing off his amazing in ring skills when Cena tagged him in and basically went ballistic on Heath Slater with his kicks and flips and crossface
Excellent video
Was there a different Nexus survivor series match featuring the Nexus?
I remember a match where Skip was doing the same 'demolishing everyone' shtick before Kane- who wasn't even legal-, grabbed him over the ropes, chokeslammed him and Skip went down like a sack of bricks
Probably Survivor Series match
There was also the Brock Lesnar x Goldberg champ x champ moments from 2003-2004 to build their feud before Mania 2004
Oh that Melina vs Fox match. I always thought she was talking about some random match on Main event or raw, which is why it felt so random
This was the first PPV following 2008 crash I got permission to watch and although in hindsight it was bad booking at the time I was a huge cena mark so this was hype af. 😂❤️
This was the first ppv I watched live, so it's kind of crazy to me that it's on the "Classic" ppv review
I was at the Raw a couple weeks after this on the 30th and they did try to give them some credibility back when they took out Undertaker that night, but looking back at it now it was way too late.
"1 minute ago" you love to see it. Despite the fact I'm seeing comments from almost a day ago.
Jericho was gone before 2010 ended, Edge retired in 2011, Bret Hart wasnt really making appearances, Other than Wade all the nexus members were nowhere near the card, injured or gone from the company
CM Punk's Summerslam's were quite weird also but this one here is one of two where he wasnt in a title match of some kind (The other was in 2013 against Brock Lesnar) but also this Summerslam was his dud inbetween two hot angles on either year. In 2009 he was in the main event with Jeff Hardy and 2011 he was facing Cena for the WWE Titles on the line.
You know, Brian. You keep saying I “Can’t C May,” but the weather has been just perfect lately and honestly I see May very well.

Can anyone with a serious face say out loud that Heath Slater, Darren Young or Michael Tarver would’ve been WrestleMania main eventers if The Nexus swept Team WWE clean?
