From what I remember, the general story behind Goldberg's loss here was that it was essentially punishment for him not being a team player & taking Triple H's place for a European tour, due to H's groin issue. Goldberg was asked to do some extra dates in Europe, he apparently declined (his contract only had so many worked dates on it, so he legally didn't have to do the tour), so WWE punished him by cooling off his push & losing here. I believe Goldberg has since admitted that regretted not doing the tour to help Triple H out, and that he should have been more of a team player during his first WWE run.
I've heard that the Elimination Chamber was a way to protect & work around HHH's injury so he wouldn't have to do as much. And they felt it'd mean more if Goldberg beat HHH 1-on-1 so they held off until Unforgiven 03. Not saying you're wrong because your comment does sound like a very WWE thing to do
@@bookaki4160 It probably was a bit of both, honestly. The dubs for Taker especially make no sense given the fact they *MADE* a new theme for him in the form of “Your gonna pay!” So I don’t know why they normally dubbed it over with different themes.
I loved when Nash hit those back to back Jacknife power bombs. They really sounded brutal and the way JR sold them was magic. I rewatch this match just for those spots. I’d recommend anyone to watch those closely. The way Y2J screamed was comical
Ahh, the “Bizarro World” Summerslam. The Till Death Do Us Part match, Edge getting booed by his home crowd, Diva Dodgeball, the snooze fest for the WWE Championship, and how Randy Orton just won the WHC out of nowhere (since all WWE produced series never say who he faced)
My dad used to tape WWE PPVs on VHS. I remember we taped this summer slam. Due to the outcome of the main event, my dad labeled this summer slam as “Bummerslam” on the VHS tape. It’s sitting somewhere at their house.
This world title chamber match was one of the first I saw during the time I started borrowing WWE DVD's from the library in the late 2000s. I always enjoyed the match when seeing it as I had no clue who Goldberg was or how Triple H had a chokehold on the main event scene in 2003. Being a naïve fan made it easier to enjoy matches for me and I'm glad I didn't do research on matches at the time. Also, I popped for the song you sang for the Christian segment.
When people say HHH buried everyone during the reign of terror, this is what they were talking about. HHH was the master of nonsense like this. All of Goldberg's momentum and hype was stopped completely dead in his tracks here and when he finally won the belt, no one cared.
@@mjl11 To be extra fair in Steiner's case, his matches were awful at this time. He was booked pretty strong in his first match, but after that performance what can you do?

It's funny because just a couple days ago I found myself reading up about the Triple H Reign of Terror and 2003 really was the nadir. Just in that year you had the botch-fest at Royal Rumble '03 with Scott Steiner, then *that* promo with Booker T followed by BEATING HIM at 'Mania XIX, then killing any heat for Goldberg here at SummerSlam. And then Goldberg finally did beat Triple H for the belt, the heat was gone, nobody cared, and then Triple H won it back just a few months later so none of it even mattered. At least there was Smackdown still giving us good wrestling with guys like Brock and Kurt.
With the benefit of hindsight, the WWE should have kept Kane babyface after the unmasking. Instead of being met with the features of a Jason Voorhees, the fans are introduced to a giant Uncle Fester whom they're told they should hate and fear. He lost his mystique and his coolness factor with his mask and he lost fan support with his heel turn. The unmasking was always going to be disappointing, but at least fans would have stuck with him had he stayed with RVD. It could have allowed for character growth in a different direction. Six months later, after we were all accustomed to the "real" Kane, they could have turned him heel and had him go on his rampage with far more momentum.
I was there. However, I wasn't anti-Goldberg at that point, because the last years if WCW were still fresh enough in my head, so I wasn't sad when he lost TBH. People around me were pissed, tho.
RE: Announcer’s tables and them being broken, I’ll say this: When it’s not at the end of a show, and they fix the table immediately after it was broken between the match/segment it happened in and the next immediate part of the show, I find it somewhat immersion breaking. If you’re going to have an announcer’e table broken, keep it broken the rest of the show and sell how it happened or don’t bother breaking it in the first place.

A lot of Americans have somewhat of a negative view of France even without factoring in the Iraq war, so it is easy heat for heels.
There is a stereotype of them being weak and effeminate, so it is embarrassing for Americans to lose to the French
Now you've gone and done it. I'm gonna need a full PPV review with Brian cosplaying as John Travolta. Gotta do the whole thing in his voice and with his mannerisms.
That grease song skit was priceless
4:05 The Smackdown lockerroom was full of hardasses around this time between Taker, Bubba Ray Dudley, JBL, Bob Holly, Eddie, and Angle.
Guys like Sly, Rene, Paul London, Brian Kendrick, Daniel Puder, Muhammad Hassan and even Batista had a really rough go in the locker room.
Brian, that shot of you looking pissed on the couch has me laughing. Also, that Christian musical number...ridiculously funny.
Big fan of the new "Watching The Screen Backstage" template
Ah, A-Train. Half hairy wrestler, half jobbing locomotive.
One of the strongest wrestlers of all time though.
The love child of George Steele and a trade unionist. Because of the jobs, you see.
Found my old school book were I had written my Top5 wrestlers in 2003. A-Train was nr3. I was a cool kid it seems.
That “Tell Me More” bit bad me rolling😂😂
The dubs for Taker especially make no sense given the fact they *MADE* a new theme for him in the form of “Your gonna pay!” So I don’t know why they normally dubbed it over with different themes.
“Bischoff says he and Linda be fuckin” is outlandish 10/10 sir
Triple H’s Reign of Terror made Raw borderline unwatchable during this time.
Nah no border, I literally stopped watching Raw for a long time bc of him
@@StateoftheFranchiseGaming same
Triple H wasn't the whole show
@@madnomad3861he took up most of it with his boring ass promos
@@spencercole23 no different than Roman and the bloodline
I loved when Nash hit those back to back Jacknife power bombs. They really sounded brutal and the way JR sold them was magic. I rewatch this match just for those spots. I’d recommend anyone to watch those closely. The way Y2J screamed was comical
The Grease Reference at 6:12 😭🤣
I love it when you do musical references 🥹
14:14 IMO Tajiri had some of the BEST German suplexes. Just beautiful when he pulled them off.
Can’t wait for the SummerSlam 04 review. Especially with Kane’s worse storyline.
@@christophermillsap5064also most of the matches being 6-8 minutes for some reason
My dad used to tape WWE PPVs on VHS. I remember we taped this summer slam. Due to the outcome of the main event, my dad labeled this summer slam as “Bummerslam” on the VHS tape.
It’s sitting somewhere at their house.
Triple H winning turned Brian from Zane to “In-Zane”.
I’ll let myself out.
Ok, like you said about Howard finkels pernunciation of La rèsistance, your greese part of the review was *chefs kiss* impeccable.
The "these two guys" dub at @18:07 fucking made me choke on my lasagna.
I’m at a loss…I 💯 % know what that’s from but can’t think of it
poor lasaga
Will never understand Vince. Its one thing to punish a wrestler but doing it on camera hurts the WWE
He’s a very arrogant petty man.
He is a bad and petty person
“St. Anger” by Metallica
“I feel gross just repeating what he said” I shouldn’t have laughed that hard at that line, but I did lol. Great delivery Brian.
Kurt Angle is without question Brock Lesnar’s best opponent.
I need to see more of that Christian x Grease bit in future videos somehow!
That Christian song 😂
Additional irony "Lunatic Fringe" was sampled for Kurt's TNA theme song
This world title chamber match was one of the first I saw during the time I started borrowing WWE DVD's from the library in the late 2000s. I always enjoyed the match when seeing it as I had no clue who Goldberg was or how Triple H had a chokehold on the main event scene in 2003. Being a naïve fan made it easier to enjoy matches for me and I'm glad I didn't do research on matches at the time.
Also, I popped for the song you sang for the Christian segment.
Lost it at “these two guys”😂
That “Nash is giantly pissed” line has been in my subconscious for so many years
Why did I think you were gonna say Linda suffered a Kidney Stone instead of Tombstone
When people say HHH buried everyone during the reign of terror, this is what they were talking about. HHH was the master of nonsense like this. All of Goldberg's momentum and hype was stopped completely dead in his tracks here and when he finally won the belt, no one cared.
Blame Vince
Booker T 100% agrees with you.
Same with Book and Steiner
@@mjl11 To be extra fair in Steiner's case, his matches were awful at this time. He was booked pretty strong in his first match, but after that performance what can you do?
Taker turned that poor ref inside out
When this show first premiered back in 2003, my father recorded it on a blank tape. I used to watch this show a lot as a kid. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle has always been one of my Favorite SummerSlam Matches
Fun Fact: Dean Ambrose was given the nickname of Lunatic Fringe, because of our local rock radio station in Cincinnati Ohio, WEBN...which is called "The Lunatic Fringe of Greater Cincinnati"........I know no one will care....can I just have a like???
Thumbs up for the 513
Brian would be a god awful jail warden, because he keeps releasing bangers.
It's Wednesday! You know what that means! Another Classic PPV review!
The actual theme song to the event is fire
Even in a post-Tribal Chief world, HHH's Reign of Terror **still** feels like death.
22:52 "I've changed the rules, it's an Elimination Chamber match now."
Brian went from Scott the woz to The AVGN
Thankfully he kept his hair unlike avgn lol
Hi all, Zane here. Something something WWE on wii.
He's the angry, wrestling neeeeeeeerd.
@@tomofthepopsyou can't control where you go bald lol don't be a dick

RE: Announcer’s tables and them being broken, I’ll say this: When it’s not at the end of a show, and they fix the table immediately after it was broken between the match/segment it happened in and the next immediate part of the show, I find it somewhat immersion breaking. If you’re going to have an announcer’e table broken, keep it broken the rest of the show and sell how it happened or don’t bother breaking it in the first place.
Loved the review! Would love to see more re-reviews of ones you did 10 years ago!
"Tell me more. Does he have a dead dad?" 😂
20:23 It’s funny how you said that in wrestling there is nothing worse you can say to someone than they smell bad, because recently RVD got really mad about Maven saying he smelled bad, and the fact you said it during an RVD match makes it even funnier. And you are right.
Summerslam '03? This is the one with the Saint Anger match card promo, right? I think I recorded the match card on the go-home Smackdown and watched it several dozen times after that.
Yup. And they dubbed over it. Yet No Mercy 08 still has All Nightmare Long. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
@@Powelljacob1408You're kidding me? I was hoping that wasn't dubbed. Despite UA-cam's faults, I'm glad it exists so people can upload the original unedited WWE stuff.

Man, Lesnar sucked as a heel in 2003 due to this 300 pound mountain of muscle being an utter coward and an associate of the incredibly unpopular Mr. McMahon.
I'm guessing the hair loss gimmick for Nash was worked into the angle because of the character he played in The Punisher which came out in 2004.
Interesting point about the dubbed-over music. Often, I look at the wrestlers' pace and cadence as they walk to the ring, either that or see if any fans are bobbing their heads. That's how I figure out Edge's theme around this time.
Also, how was the Shane vs. Kane last man standing match from Unforgiven '03 not on this show instead?
It's wild seeing A-Train on these old shows, knowing that he's going to be one of the most important people behind the scenes 10+ years later.
Fun fact Rene Dupree family was hug back in the day up in New Brunswick canada
When Goldberg military pressed Orton into that spinebuster, it was insane!

The elimination chamber match was Kevin Nash's last match in WWE till the 2011 Royal Rumble match.
Matt Striker marking out 😂
Angle putting the straps up just to put them back down again for his Ankle Lock was golden. He’s got gold-medal comedic genius.
Triple H pulled a "Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing" before Luigi.
What a reference!
I just reached the Summer Lovin’ part. I’m just gonna sit here for a second to catch my breath. Bravo, Brian.
Hot take: I much prefer Goldberg's theme in WWE, than the WCW version. Johnston just upped the drums and I like it all the more for it
