As Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announces he will step down as the Senate's Republican leader after 17 years - the longest term in Senate history - we speak with Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, who says, "McConnell's legacy has been one of obstruction." He describes McConnell's "aggressive" use of the filibuster, the topic of Merkley's new book, _Filibustered!: How to Fix the Broken Senate and Save America_, as having "broken the cycle in which government can function." Merkley also discusses Republican manipulation of judicial appointments and the cloture motion in pushing the legislature further right.

The president can only serve 2terms, I believe there should be term limits for all branches of government and judicial systems.
I figured out a constitutional way to do it. You can only spend your salary to run for office. Now a senator can only spend ~$1M. Anyone else can spend whatever they want.
They can always quit if they want to spend more. But their replacement may want to keep the job.
Constitutional since you don't have to take the job. Imagine how much better it would be if they have to run on their record because they can't afford to lie in a campaign.

And there is nothing to do to get donations since you are maxed out.. If they quit so they can spend more than ~$375k, the house could switch parties.

McConnell is very smart, but very shallow. His commitment to 'Party above all' has resulted in the move from a country that cared for all citizens, along with any collegiate behavior in the Legislature. He covered for every bad-faith action, or outright crime, when committed by a fellow Republican; while obstructing every possible motion attempted whenever Democrats held the majority, regardless of the merits. We have this man to 'thank' for much of the last few decades of downhill-slide.

@@annefitz7346 Actually Garland has ties to the Federalists Society, though not a member he has presided on many panels hosted by the society. He was also a compromise candidate that McConnell handed to Obama. I do agree that he would not have voted to take up the case to overturn roe vs wade, but I believe he would have voted to send RvW back to the states.

The Constitution of the USA and any other laws and ruling how your parliament, president and justice system (including supreme court) works just sucks. There are lots of parts that do not work well when there are only two major parties and when the division between the parties is as bd as it is now.
I don’t completely know what ”gerrymandering” means. I know it means adjusting voting areas somehow for benefit of your own party. How the hell is that possible?
The other thing is that you vote people who select the president. Why not a direct voting. The candidate who gets more than 50% of votes is the president. If in the first round anyone doesn’t get that then on the 2nd round only the two best would be as candidates. The voting area should be the whole country, means no gerrymandering.
Wrong. Citizens dont vote for the electors from the Electoral College. That is a body of people randomly selected to "represent" the number of electoral votes given at unique numbers to each states. Peasants dont vote them in only the establisment does.
You are ignorant of the size of the entire nation. 50 INDEPENDENT states have united under 1 Federal Government.
The issue here is bad actors have taken over state by state because the STATES hold more election voting rights/control than the Federal Government.
Each state, in order to allocate resources, divides the state up into districts. By gerrymandering, weirdly shaping each district, we can effectively make more than 2/3 a district the desired voting population and silence the less than 1/3 of opposition voters in that district.
Next if we gerrymander states with LARGER populations we can effectely have more ELECTORAL votes to use to vote for whoever we please regardless the peasants popular choice. Therefore we have effectively created MINORITY control of a Democracy meant to be ruled by a Majority.
Why the ELECTORAL COLLEGE? It exists to "balance" the effects of population by state. If 25 states had larger populations than the other 25 guess what - those larger population states will always determime who wins in Federal Elections. This was why during the 13 colonies time the slave states wanted the Electoral College AND to make black slaves count 3/5th people. This way the more populated Northern states didnt always decide election outcomes; the Southern states contained less population and therefore invented ways to make things equal.
