This was very interesting. I noticed you mentioned Kellogg was a physician, but did not mention that Welch (and later his son) was a physician and a dentist. Welch and his son were both anti-alcohol, and made their grape juice as a substitute for a glass of wine. And "Grapelade" was pronounced as it is spelled.. My granny told me about this product a long time ago. Sounds like "marm-el-ade" but it's "grape-el-ade". Just thought you'd like to know. Again, this was very interesting. Thanks!
With you mentioning Kellogg, I was reminded of rice crispies. Kellogg makes that, don’t they? One of my favorite peanut butter treats when I was just starting college was from the pizza restaurant I used to work at. They had this frozen yogurt machine where you could create your own flavor by choosing either a plain or chocolate frozen yogurt-based, and then choosing from a wide variety of ingredients to add to it, and it would get crushed up in the machine and squeezed out like a soft serve ice cream (but in a bowl). I had two favorite flavors… One of them was adding peanut butter and rice crispies into plain frozen yogurt, which had such a great flavor and texture! The other was adding crushed graham cracker crumbs and cream cheese to a plain base to create a cheesecake flavor. Both were beyond fabulous.
Exactly it shouldn't even be called a grilled cheese sandwich if it's not cooked on a grill. I feel like the term cheese toastie used in the UK makes more sense than grilled cheese because the bread is kinda toastie so it makes sense but it definitely doesn't make sense for it to be called "grilled cheese." Some names for foods are just plain weird and make no sense. 🤣😂
Great video! I'm salavating! But I totally agree, never use the same utensil in the jam & peanut butter (unless cleaned). Especially in the jam. If you let any butter (nut or dairy) in the jam it makes the jam mold.

This reminded me of a time when my step kids were little and decided they wanted an omelette for breakfast. I had eggs, but nothing else to put in an omelette, not even cheese. So, I made them grape jelly omelettes and toast. When I served them up, the kids thought I was the coolest person ever. Score!!
So when making jam, you can completely bypass adding pectin powder by instead making a pectin puree from apples and lemons. This is what i do with my lower pectin level fruits, and i find it adds an extra depth of flavour without really being discernible or overpowering.
Sounds cool, two questions. Is there some kind of a test to figure out how much pectin is in the final homemade product? and Does homemade pectin minimize the amount of sugar that has to be added for the jam to set properly? (Similar to what was mentioned in the video)
Jeeze dude, you have really evolved over the years on your channel, and THIS is a crowning achievement of culinary confidence, heritage, and creativity. Maaaad props for braiding your own Challah and marrying life's two greatest meals when done properly - custardy French toast and PB&J. Super impressed, and thank you for this idea.
During my entire first semester of grad school, I would make a PB & J sandwich every day. I would put multigrain bread with honey-roasted peanut butter ( stuff you'd get from the Wholefoods peanut butter grinder) and fresh berries ( blueberries, strawberries or blackberries) and toast on a sandwich press with butter. The berries would become jammy and juicy. Absolutely incredible!
I used to eat 2 pb&j sandwiches each day in high school and during the first year in uni, unit the shit schedules got me and had to buy much higher calorie count food because I noticed I was losing weight pretty fast.
I enjoyed watching this as PBJ is one of my all-time favorites. My mom canned everything, so I was probably in college before I ate jelly from a store. Every summer, we made plum, grape, and apricot-pineapple jams...yum! I still make my own jam as there really is no substitute. I hope others will give making their own jams and jellies a go...they won't go back!
As a non-American, I was confused when the first time I heard PB&J. I mean, I can see why it's delicious. Salty sweet tangy nutty between a sandwich, what can go wrong. But I don't understand why it's a huge thing in America. One day when I was in a hotel breakfast (it wasn't even a big hotel), I tried to make the PB&J using the bread, peanut butter, and the jelly they had. My first impression is, it's quite addicting actually.

I developed what I called the "Super Standard", way back when I was a kid. I'm 70 now and still loving it from time to time. It's, whole wheat bread, peanut butter, strawberry preserves and banana, sliced lengthwise to expose the gooey inside and lay flat on the bread. Now of course, the highest version of this sandwich is made with home baked bread made with 1st class organic ingredients, organic strawberry preserves and home made peanut butter. It doesn't get any better for me than this version. ;-)

Same here. 23 seconds, I can't do it. Peanut butter on one side, jelly on the other. Spread ghee on one side and put onto panini press, ghee on the top and press that sucker down. THAT is a grownup PB&J.
One of my favorite sandwiches was kind of stolen from Brothers Green. I take 2 flavored bread (strawberry, blueberry or cinnamon raisin) PB and J mixed in a bowl A banana cut up in many slices Toast the bread Spread the PBJ and place bananas on top Close the sandwich Eat, enjoy, repeat Voila
Morning beer is acceptable when camping and tailgating. But what makes you think PB&J is breakfast? Course you could eat it anytime but it’s definitely more of a lunch or midday snack to hold you over till dinner
The second I saw the beginning clip of you slathering jelly ontop of the peanut butter like a barbarian I KNEW you must be one of those people that use the same utensil for both.
Same knife is just fine. You just do jelly first, wipe what little jelly remains on the knife on untouched piece of bread, and then you're doing the peanut butter with a clean knife. Easy.
I don't think this is for "grown ups." We don't really have time for all this! Maybe it's Pb&j for chefs who are in quarantine and have a lot of time on their hands?

Yeah, as a PBJ specialist, this was awful to watch. He also said he hated peanut butter and jellies because it's too mass produced, then later said he loved it so much that he just eats spoonfuls as snacks.
13:09 Challah is great, however it's not the butter that makes it good. Normally challah doesn't even have butter... that's a reason why Challah is so popular in the Jewish community. Not only is it very tasty, but there is a big thing about not mixing meat with dairy, so a bread without dairy can be eaten in any meal or dish. (I really like and appreciate your work, and I'm not trying to be a hard ass, it just irked me that you were acting like this change to the recipe was a key ingredient)
Yep no butter in traditional (and certainly non american) challah as traditionally Jews do not mix meat and dairy and they traditionally have challah on the sabbith with a meat meal. they use oil and eggs. this challa did look good and could go with a dairy meal.
Isn't it an unwritten assumption that once you hit like, 14 years old you realize that jelly is inferior and jam is the true pairing for peanut butter?

@@DaleSandusky So 🤔 you are comparing the contribution of George Washington Carver, a black man who actually invented peanut butter with a Gorilla who became an ironic internet sensation. So you're not even trying to hide your racism, huh?
FWIW, peanut butter (like chocolate) is 'hydrophilic'--which means it absorbs water--and, as it does, it 'seizes'--literally turns into a delicious brick--until you add enough more water. You can use this feature to do some pretty cool things. As homemade/'natural' peanut butter is much looser than the processed version, you can add jam/jelly/banana/etc. to it and the water that they contain will tighten the whole thing up. (In the case of this recipe, it would keep the jelly from leaking all over the place.) For a simple, two-ingredient frosting/fruit dip, mix 1:1 peanut butter and yogurt. Yum!
Also good in homemade peanut butter: homemade vanilla paste, freshly grated cinnamon, a little splash of bourbon, or some other nut butter like pecan butter or cashew butter.

So it mean if you feel its mass produced it means you grew up without struggle mean doesn't mean your didnt struggle. Also another things o clarify the difference between people who are struggle and put who did not, If your family struggled you are the whole sandwich no one cut the crust off. No one is not wasting food!!!. The a difference between what a priority food and what its luxury. People who didnt struggle are with crust off cut into shape .

Secret recipient: Turn on the oven broiler. Butter outside of bread slice, add peanut butter, preferably chunky variety, to inside. Hollow out a little depression in center of peanut butter. Add jelly/jam of your desire, or whatever the jellish stuff leftover in the fridge is. Take second bread slice, butter outside. Add a thin layer of peanut butter on the inside. This is to glue this contraption shut when you put the two pieces together. Put the two slices together, butter out, of course, then slide it onto a low shelf in the oven. When top starts to get toasty brown, flip it over and proceed to get the other side toasty. In my over, it’s 3 minutes per side. Slide this rich toasty concoction out onto a heat resistant plate. Let sit for 5 minutes, if you have the will power, so the peanut butter doesn’t scald your mouth when chewed. Heaven. Between. Bread.

Thanks!
This is the comment we didn’t know we needed, but glad it’s here. I can’t wait for this to show up on a trivia game
He mentioned they were attempting to make a non-alcoholic version
The road to wellness. ...great movie related to these early food families
He also didn't mention Kellogg was an idiot that created the curb flakes to help keep people from masturbating soo... Can't get it all in there lol

My roommates several years ago got a grilled sandwich press and would make this all the time. Better than one might expect.
The funny thing about a grilled cheese sandwich is that it doesn't have to be cooked on an actual grill.
Hamilton Champagne and it typically isn’t cooked on a grill
Exactly it shouldn't even be called a grilled cheese sandwich if it's not cooked on a grill. I feel like the term cheese toastie used in the UK makes more sense than grilled cheese because the bread is kinda toastie so it makes sense but it definitely doesn't make sense for it to be called "grilled cheese." Some names for foods are just plain weird and make no sense. 🤣😂

So when making jam, you can completely bypass adding pectin powder by instead making a pectin puree from apples and lemons. This is what i do with my lower pectin level fruits, and i find it adds an extra depth of flavour without really being discernible or overpowering.
Was coming to leave this exact comment! I love making jam this way over using artificial pectin, like you said the flavor is so much better!
Sounds cool, two questions.
Is there some kind of a test to figure out how much pectin is in the final homemade product?
and
Does homemade pectin minimize the amount of sugar that has to be added for the jam to set properly? (Similar to what was mentioned in the video)

Yum!
I love how food is always cheaper and better in farmers markets.

Take second bread slice, butter outside. Add a thin layer of peanut butter on the inside. This is to glue this contraption shut when you put the two pieces together.

When top starts to get toasty brown, flip it over and proceed to get the other side toasty. In my over, it’s 3 minutes per side.
