Great review....however, if I connect a nozzle as big as the hose you used, my housholdcvac would lift those weights. The magic is in the volume, quiet running, and dust filtration...😊
Good review Peggy, very informational. Something a lot of people don't consider though is venting the output from extractors outside. Even though you can't see what's coming out of the filter, it's that small unseen particulate and vapour that do the most damage to our lungs and health. I've work in the HVAC industry when I was younger for about 20 years, and installed many spray booths, and industrial dust/fume extractors, and all industrial extractors (at least in Australia), must either be outside of the work area or vent outside of the work area. It worries me when I see a lot of workshop DIY's venting the extractor back into the same work area without the output of the filter (at least) vented out of the work area. I always say if you can smell it, your breathing it, and even sometimes you can't smell harmful stuff. It's great you are thinking of yours, and your family's health, and I'm sure this machine helps a great deal, but there's more to the safety of your lungs. Perhaps building a small room section where the filter output section can go inside and have that vented outside, even a small flapper vent to allow the accumulated air from the filter output to escape outside. That way you can have the extractor in a location that allows you to connect machinery, and still have the output not being blown back into your work area.
@@silverbackag9790 Of course Filters, but they don't remove everything, and degrade over time and usage. If you want to vent the air back into your workspace that is your choice. The point of my original comment is for those that are unaware that they could still be breathing in dangerous fumes and particles, and damage their lungs. Put simply, if you can smell it, you're breathing it, I wouldn't be relying on just the filter to catch everything, as that is impossible. If it's getting air through the filter, it's also not catching everything.
I have one of these and I have yet to use it. But the biggest problem with this machine is getting it off the pallet, because it is so heavy. The handbook suggests using a forklift truck and lifting straps. As I had no access to one of those, I used an engine hoist, and once off the pallet, it is easy to wheel around.
Good morning, Peggy. I appreciate your review. Sounds quiet. Dust is an issue with wood working #ilikemylungs. Also if doing finishing in the same area as the cutting and sanding, dust collection is a must.
I" buy only rough-cut lumber and do my own milling on the Jointer and the planner with helical heads. Both make a ton of small wood particles. and the bin for the big pieces on this machine looks to need to be emptied very frequently!
Very nice and excellent review, PF! Harvey must have thought highly of your UA-cam Channel and respected your word to provide this nice machine for your review and personal use. Perhaps more reviews of this very nice dust collector are in order.👍👍👍👍
I agree 100% with your comment. Yes Peggy is a down to earth wood turning teacher. She put s huge effort into her channel and based on other folks comments she has earned any and all future sponsorships!
@@JDDupuy Well, I can’t argue with that. She does put in time and effort into what she shows us in turning wood. And she comes across as a nice lady. Hopefully other companies she mentions in her videos will sponsor her videos, as well. She gives them a lot of free advertising. PF should do well as time progresses.
This video was very helpful. Thank you! Quick question: what is the suction level you set this on when you attach it to your Dewalt planer? I have mine set at 750 and when I attached it to my Dewalt planer the power of the suction broke the adapter port attached to the planer.
This machine is great for dust collection on any operations that produce dust and somewhat larger particle sizes. But if you try to collect the shavings as they are coming off something such as a green wood bowl turning, they will get hung up and cause a clog on the grating right at the inlet. And worth considering is that just one large bowl turning will produce enough shavings to fill the hopper ( if the shavings are small enough to get past the grating). Also, putting the main power switch on the back of the machine seems a poor choice. So as a wood turner evaluating this machine I assume for wood turners, I think your review left out some important considerations.
It will be hooked up to the Harvey. For this review, it was hooked up to drum sander and bandsaw. I need to get some longer hose or upgrade to ductwork to reach the lathe.
Thanks for reviewing this beast. Will you be plumbing dust removal piping from your equipment across the basement to this unit or just using its wheels to move the unit to your equipment.? Do the two bins differentiate between carving materials or just size? Several other wood turners augment their wood with resin. The shavings from resin are highly flammable. Can this unit detect & warn in case of fire; or, is there a fire suppression module available? I applaud you concern for lung issues. Wishing you and your family a blessed week and gentle spring season. Peace dear lady.
I hope to add some ductwork sometime soon. The drums differentiate between size of shavings. I am not sure about the fire detection, good question though, I will have to get back to you. The shavings in the dust bins were primarily from using my drum sander, so they all looked like fine dust.
Hi Peggy Off topic but what brand 2” sanding pads do you use with the New Wave mesh discs? I bought their pad and multi disc package. The sanding pads don’t hold discs on very good So wanted to see what u use bc always see same yellow pad attached to drill Ty
Have you experienced any problems with the dust processor when turning resin (strands and shavings)? I like the looks of that machine but not the fact that the impeller is upstream from the separator.
Wow, you are so lucky…how did you manage to get them to give you that? My house is 155 years old and my basement holds dust. That is where I have my lathe, so I can turn in Wisconsin winters…like you in Maine.
You are so cute! And you have a nice baba canoosh. Thanks for the demo as always. I look forward to your next vid. I got a Woodmaster drum sander from my garage to the basement all by myself. I took it apart and put it back together where it now sits; a valuable tool. I don't have the space that you seem to have but I do have a sawdust collector for the drum sander and the table saw. I switch hoses around to the tool I'm using but mostly just let the air handler remove the fine stuff. I usually wear a dust mask as well. -Curt
The blade guard doesn't track well at all. I can't raise or lower the blade guard...and I'm not sure what's wrong, I thought it was the circle handle thing and I ordered a new one, but it still won't work. It must be something inside -- I should post it on a laguna FB page and ask.
@@PFWoodturning Yep - mine will not track well as i'd raised or lower - it would pull back away from the blade. i sent a video to laguna support and was told that is just the way it is. I had a jet bandsaw previously and never had such an issue. I like this saw for the power, but the ceramic blocks and the entire blade guard and guide adjustment is unfortunately quite poorly done in my opinion. i've just learned to deal with it (upgraded to the carter bearings and they are significantly better).
This unit will not work well in my shop due to the high amount of planning I do. The amount of material removed and the collection bins are way too small, requiring very frequent emptying of the collection bins.
I think if you dropped your upper guides on the bandsaw you'd have a little safer time using it, and a better cut. Harvey makes the best equipment, a friend just purchased their Turbo T60S lathe and it is a beast. Thanks for the review.
#ilikemylungs Great review Peggy. I am curious about the dust already in the bins, it looks pretty fine. What tools and materials generated that material? It helps us understand performance. The footprint isn't that much bigger than the unit I've been considering, and not half as tall. This units 61-72 db is amazing. And Harvey has a current sale price of $2600. I've been anxiously awaiting your review... I think I'm sold. I bet if Harvey made your bandsaw, you'd have your part already ;-)
I like your lungs to, and I take care of mine! I have decent dust collection now, but if and when it breaks down, this would be high on my list as a replacement.
Please don't use that bandsaw with the blade exposed as it is. When I was at NTSU in the late seventies, there was a girl in the art department workshop whose arm was severed a bandsaw. Surgeons reattached her arm, but, as you can imagine, her recovery was a long process and, of course, her arm was never again 100% useable. Every few months, the school paper would update her progress, so even now when I see or use a bandsaw, I'm reminded of her tragic accident. Perhaps if you did a short video showing the problem and describing your efforts to correct it, Laguna (if that's the brand) would take an interest in correcting the situation. It would be in their interest to not have a defective blade guard that might invite a product liability suit if someone were injured.
