    This week I turned a silver maple bowl and melted crayons around the rim. To secure the crayon wax I used resin over the wax.

    I like it, it came out nice. Gives me an idea though. If black wax was used, with a thinner edged trough, and let the wax melt and drip down the sides, then using the dremel cut away where the wax has dripped, then fill that with the coloured wax, t hen when do the same with resin to fill it up and give a harder surface for wear. Then finish the bowl off. I think it would make it look like the wax is dripping down the outside and inside of the bowl.

    I love that idea and your commentary. I have to be honest though.. I would've liked to have seen the bowl being kept at the stage where the crayons had melted down tue inside. You obviously would've needed to epoxy the inside of the bowl that way, but it looked cool like that.

    Just found your channel of late and am enjoying watching you create. May I offer a little? I liked your idea of the crayons. It has been a year since doing this video, how has the resin crayon embellishment held up? I ask as wax is the best release agent for resin work. May I suggest using colored resin, you may need to thicken the resin a little, pouring the different colored resin into the same sort of recess you placed the crayons. Then continue with your process.
    Thanks agin for your work and sharing.

    Crayon wax with epoxy cover is a very nice touch. For better control, I think I would melt each of them, then pour them in the groove. The video effects are interesting, but you may want to save them for the intro and wrap up, instead of interrupting the process part of the video. Glad you are trying new things!

    That blank looked like it was soaking wet when you started - you could see wood mud building up on the edge of your gouge. Did you dry it at all before applying the wax and resin? If not, aren't you worried about it changing shape and popping the resin out? Neither one is going to stick well to wet wood.

    • @PFWoodturning
      @PFWoodturning  5 років тому

      David Stranz it was wet, but not soaking. The turning was done slowly over a longer than usual period of time, to let dry out layer by layer.

    Hi Peggy, Very nice effect. When you were turning the outside of the bowl were you using a 1/2" bowl gouge with a fingernail grind? I am still trying to learn! Your narration was excellent! Look forward to your videos.

    I like it! THE melted crayon would also be cool if "painted" over with epoxy and then simply polished. More ideas...
