Pietta 1858 Remington .44 Cap & Ball & .45 ACP Combo - Shooting Review of This Awesome Revolver

- Two calibers and one revolver - the Pietta copy of the Remington 1858 black powder handgun will shoot .44 black powder balls and .45 ACP ammo. How is it possible? Watch and I will show you how it is done when using a Howell Arms cylinder.
Note to self: DO NOT park your car in beautiful southern Nevada.
They can't park em in garages when the odor from the trunk gets too bad.
Or anywhere in California 😂
It's likely a stolen vehicle that was used in some nefarious deeds.
that Pietta is a beauty and $150 for this and the .45 conversion makes it super. Doubt I’d bother with using it in black powder mode.
When I lived out there and went out to shoot my Mossberg or ride quads I used to find old trucks like that all over the place. In fact that looks a lot like one of the places I would go. Found a Bronco flipped over in a ditch with molten slag all around the back half so clearly the tank exploded after it flipped. Real world environmental story telling. Lol
Heck yea, love black powder fire arms! Something about the slow process of loading, paying attention to all details, then taking one shot, looking at placement, then again another shot. Also black powder loads , more or less to your comfort and accuracy . Thanks I hope all went well on vacation and take care old man greatly appreciated.
That is a gorgeous pistol! I love black powder. I fell in love back in the seventies when my father bought a Thompson center hawken. He had to unload it one night after hunting. He fired the rifle and that flame jumped out of the barrel and gave off sparks. It is a thing to behold at night. Of course there is the smoke and the smell and the resounding boom that is unmistakenly characteristic of an era gone by that we get to relive. My Lyman Great Plains rifle in .54 is my favorite rifle. I also own a pedersoli 10gauge side by side that has screw in chokes. That shotgun is my most prized possession. I have never seen another like it. Black powder shotgun to me is the ultimate black powder experience.
I have one. Installed the 45 conversions. love shooting it! Black powder is still a fun hobby!
I have several 1858 Remingtons, for they are quick when changing cylinders in a hurry unlike the Colts.
Pale Rider
I could reload my Pietta Colt 1851 Navy Sherriff in only a couple seconds, sometimes in less than two seconds. All you have to do is pull the wedge out far enough to pull the front of the gun off without pulling it out completely and then replace the cylinder before putting everything back.
Good to see you back, nice firearm!
Glad to be back and we have lots of videos planned for this spring and summer.
Hey my man I sure missed you please don’t go away, you’re my favorite
I'm glad to be back and I'm not going anywhere for a long time. I love your comment Norm....thank you!
Good to see you again, Mixup! Nice Pietta, too. Wish I could get a spare cylinder in 45 ACP for my Pietta SAAs!!
I picked up the Remington 1858 a couple of months ago for around $300.00 now the conversion cylinder is another $230.00 so you definitely got a great deal on your Remington with Conversion Cylinder for $150.00 thays for sure. Some people have all the luck 😂 !
Thanks for the video and God Bless You And Family. Amen
Nice shooting,
And speaking on revolvers I recently picked up a Vintage Ruger Super BlackHawk NM (made between late 77 to early 78). 7.5” barrel blued finish and it came with a few extras which included a Bianchi leather holster along with a gun belt.
Great package
The Ruger Super BlackHawk .44 mag is one of the coolest revolvers ever made and I'm glad to hear that you found a nice one. Enjoy your 'new' Ruger and have a great weekend.
Dan,, You got a great deal on that pistol, furthermore, you have expanded the enjoyment of shooting it. Good video. - Dave
I have the longer barrel 1858 with a 6 shot Howell 45 Cold conversion cylinder. At the time I had a 45 Colt which I reloaded for, however for most people a 45ACP cylinder may make more sense.
Colts may be more famous but I like the tapered underlug/loading lever of the Remingtons. Shooting black powder has a sense of occasion about it. You are the first person I've ever seen shoot an Alfa Romeo but I can't blame the owner for ditching it, they're not known for reliability or being cheap to fix.
Pale Rider is an underrated movie, that and High Plains Drifter.
I've also never seen anyone shoot an Alfa Romeo and honestly, I did get a tingling feeling each time I pulled the trigger 👍😁
I’ve got a couple of Black Powder.Revolvers. I use real black powder and Crisco for lube.
They’re slow to load. I’ve read where Bill Anderson had about eleven loaded pistols on his saddle when they killed him. All hung around and ready. I guess he
could shoot awhile before he had to worry about reloading !
I also use Crisco, but use 40grains Pyrodex instead of 30grains fff black powder. Mutch easier to clean
@@thomastevelde8547 I’ve got some Pytodex in there. I just prefer Black Powder. I’ve got six rifles and five pistols.
If you use Pedrox pellets you need to clean just like black powder. That dark ring around the bottom of the pellet is corresive. Graniular is okay I guess.
Love the black powder smoke!
Excellent entertainment, thanks from the UK.
Many thanks and greetings from the United States!
Enjoyed watching you shoot the Remington! I have one also with the 45 Colt conversion cylinder and it is fun to shot. I recently got the 1858 Remington revolving carbine with another 45 Colt
cylinder. Really fun to get both of them out and must say the carbine is really accurate!
Well....I admit to laughing way too hard when you smoked that mirror. Best use for an Alfa Romeo ever!
You got that right!
Jeremy Clarkson woke violently with night terrors as soon as it happened 😂
I can smell the smoke from here..nice gun..
Great Find! 👍👍👍💥
I have a Uberti '58 with 5.5" barrel in stainless with a .45 LC cylinder and a Pietta "Ace" '58 (Blued) with 3" Barrel also with a .45 LC cylinder. Indeed a real "blast" to shoot!
There is no such cartridge in .45 LC! Stop this unneeded designation. Not necessary to add Long, since the headstamp clearly does not coincide Stop trying to sound knowledgeable.
@@normanmcneal3605 ".45 Long Colt" fool... Look it up🤓 That is the technical designation of the Only cartridge which can be fired from these cylinders. And the ammo box is clearly LABELLED ".45 Long Colt". So it's clearly .45 LC. "Weather you like it or not" 🤣 I suggest that you take your gripping to the Ammo and conversation cylinder manufacturers.
I was thinking about getting a stainless Remington but am indecisive about barrel length. How do you like it, easier to clean up, and handling? They look great
@@PhillipFelix-kw3zi I find the shorter barrel much easier to shoot. But if you want maximum performance in power and velocity, especially with black powder, the 7.5" barrel is the way to go.
@@4ninefine199 thank you, I'll probably go with the shorter barrel since it handles better. I wish they would make a stainless 1860 army Colt, that would be great.
Nicely done! Mine are 45 Colt. SS Uberti and the shorter one like you used. Both fun shooters.
NIIICE!
Bloody Hell! $150 Bucks WITH the Howell cylinder? THAT WAS a steal! Congratulations! Helluva deal you found.
Great deal for $150.00 . Just picked up a Remington 44cal Black Powder Revolver forca little more but definitely worth it and it's really a beautiful work of art!! What's really nice is that this Remington has a hair trigger making it pretty accurate besides shooting a tad high but a little adjustment on the front sight and I'm good to go !
Thanks
Have a Ruger Old Army myself. Almost out of black, and am considering Triple 7 (hate Pyrodex), and the more I see folks using it, the more I am heading that way.
Old Army uses either .454 OR .457 round balls. I always use the .457 because it cuts the best ring! I have never used those lubed wads, but most folks do use them when using the Triple 7, so I might have to get a few of them as well!
And your correct, those cylinders that allow for 45 ACP or Colt are very pricey! They start at $250 for the Old Army... aint got one of them yet, but I am considering it.
Keep up the good work Amigo!
Living my best La Vida Loca here in south eastern Arizona
I mostly use Triple Seven in my percussion firearms. Much less fouling but good smoke. The recommended load is ~ 15% less than GOEX/Swiss.
I used to use Pyrodex but now I prefer Triple 7. It seems to shoot cleaner and it definitely produces more energy than Pyrodex.
Nice looking artillery! Very nice find to alternate calibers.
Hello there Sir! It's really good to see you this morning; and you're having a bit more fun than myself. lol That is a great revolver you have there. I'm not sure I've ever seen one of those with the conversion cylinder you showed us. Good fun and good sun out there in Nevada today. Looking forward to your next video and a big howdy to your son and all of your family. Great weekend to you!! :)
Hello Ericlee. I really did have fun making this video and I wish my son could have been in it with me. My son will be in my next video though, which will be posted tomorrow morning and I hope you like .410 single shot pistols 😁 Have a great weekend!
@@mixup98Ok fabtastic, I'm already looking forward to seeing you two shoot fun stuff with a .410 pistol, that sounds interesting. I'll be there! :)
God damn! Those were nice groups with the quick cylinder change and rapid fire!😃👍
Missed you. Great video. Your shooting is excellent as always.
Thank you Paul !!
Another great video. Besides the smoke, I notice the distinct difference in the sound between the BP and 45 ACP. That's not necessarily surprising, but hearing them now side by side from the same firearm confirms that. Always something new to learn from mixup98's videos.
Hello Aaron. I will be posting another video tomorrow morning and we hope you enjoy it 👍😎 😎👍
Great video. I love my 1858 New Army. I have a similar- Uberti, stainless, 8" barrell and 45 Long Colt cylinder. My BP load is the same as yours- 35 grains and .454. I only use the wads in warm weather as the Bore Butter tends to melt. In cooler weather, i just lube the cyliders with Bore Butter after loading. I did have to trim some off the front sight as it shot very low.
I used a straight edge to mark the front site with yellow paint, it's easier to see, and placed 5 out of 6 in a 5" circle at 30 yards with a 20 grain load, 15-20 with pyrodex, any more powder and the 451 round ball tends to spin off target, great shooters 👍
Good shooting Tex! Black powder has always been interesting to me. Hope you and your wife had a great vacation!
We had a great vacation....we went on our very first cruise and absolutely loved it. Thanks for asking 👍😎 👍👧🏻
Love the sound of those black powder blasts!
It was a black powder substitute called triple 7. Go-ex or Swiss is black powder
Right, it's just a generic term. I use Pyrodex or Triple 7 in my .45 Colt loads. Quite pleasing!
@@silvertrek357 substitutes are great in cartridges! Hah even tho some bottles say not too (think it’s the volume vs weight) bad in flint locks tho. Hang fires (everything black powder)
Another great video as always. Looking forward to the next one!
Coming soon!
beautiful, contrary to many who don't know how to shoot black powder, it didn't jam a single shot, it's nice to see. others are afraid B. powder
Best use of an Alfa Romero--Italian POS, I have ever seen ! --Saludos de Colorado.

@@terrywadsworth5645 FIAT- Fix It Again, Tony.
Very nice gun and must be great fun to have it able to fire two different ways😊
Beautiful revolver!
I'm a huge fan of 45 acp, but that 454 BP has some serious bark and bite to it.
Hope you had a great vacation, good to see you back
My wife and I had a great vacation but I'm glad it's over and I'm glad to be back making my videos. My next video will be posted tomorrow morning and my son and I hope you enjoy it.
What an awesome revolver.
Always a pleasure big man , good to see you back and hopefully you enjoyed your vacation ,
Happy Easter to you and yours ,
Thank you Tom and Happy Easter to you and yours.
Another great video, love the echo!. That was a nice car probably stolen.great gun too.
I have a couple of these one with a Kirst gated conversion in 45 Colt and one with Howell conversion in 45 ACP. Before Cabelas was bought out they used to sell these for around $200 at Christmas time. No more of those deals. Also just picked up a new 686 Plus Deluxe w 3 inch barrel. SW has a $75 dollar rebate until May.Gun shop knocked another $120 off the price.
Your back! It's about time. Just love your stuff as usual.
Happy Easter
Hello Duane. I am glad to be back and tomorrow morning I am posting another video, this time with my son in it. We made a video on a single-shot .410 pistol and we hope you enjoy it. Have a great weekend and Happy Easter!
@mixup98 I'll be waiting for that. You know , there is so much on the web that's not worth anything done by people that don't know anything. So when you come across someone who is genuine it a real treat.
Thanks for being that person!!!!
@@duanequam7709 Oh man, you just made my day. Maybe someday I will get the opportunity to meet you and shake your hand.
Glad you're back hopefully the break was better for you as we missed the show here. Nice weapon for me to much work.
Happy to see you back! 😄😄
Interesting pistol too! I love anything .45acp anyway😊
👍😎
I picked up an 8" 1858 by EuroArms of America. No conversion cylinder. Don't know if I can find one. Taylor's & Co. is nearby and I may have to take it to them and see what they say. My $115 Remington clone is in great shape. Nicely blued without a drag line. I love it.
If you like black powders with conversion cylinders, check out the NAA companion .22 mini black powder. Tons of fun!
I will and thanks for the suggestion.
Awesome video! Beautiful piece!! I love the 1858 steel frames!! Definitely on my wishlist!
👍😎
Very neat video thanks. I have a Ruger Old Army and have always thought about getting a center fire cylinder for it.
Good to see ya back! When I saw that gun, the first thing I thought of was Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider. That's a real nice gun. I like the conversion cylinder. Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed it ! 🤠
👍😎
Thanks for the Pale Rider reference. Ill rewatch it.
👍🤠
This was a great scene. Loved Clint's cylinder holster. Too cool.
I noticed when I was shooting bp putting the wad on top of the powder will foul a surprising amount. I started putting them on top the ball. Eventually stopped using them entirely. Never had any issues or chain fires.
Very cool!
my favorite revolvers are those that can shoot multiple calibers. My personal favorite is the Ruger Blackhawk new model .357 6.5". Can fire .38 special, .357 mag, and with the conversion cylinder 9mm. The old model is my favorite overall but not sure if it can use the conversion.
Cap and ball so much fun that is a nice revolver 😍
It was Pale Rider and he swapped cylinders during the "gun fight", like you did. That was the fastest reload of the era, for black powder without bored through cylinders. The only thing faster was grabbing another revolver. lol
Thank you for not decreasing your powder charge by 10%🙏👊
👍😁
Good shooting! I missed the part where you adjusted the powder measure the give the desired charge...
Mr. Mixup can truly shoot straight. Black powder pistols with crude fixed sights are not easy to be accurate with in my rather limited experience.
Thank you jonjames!!
I wondered what happened to you. Glad you're back I missed your videos. I love the 58. The one I have, i have 3 extra cylinders for It. They're all black Powder. Stay safe and have a fun easter.
I am glad to be back and my son and I have lots of videos planned for the coming months. You also stay safe and have a great Easter.
Just found a cool pawn shop gun. One of the single shot .45 black powder kit guns. Never been fired by the look and smell of it. Have not shot it yet but it had to be worth $65.
Good to have you back!!!
Glad to be back. My son and I will be shooting a new video tomorrow 👍😎 👍😎
Hey mixup, i have same pistol with a 45 colt conversion cylinder.what great fun it is to go from changing cylinders. Also have a 1860 colt 44. Love your videos.
Hello Carlos. Maybe someday I will pick up a 45 Colt cylinder and do a review on it. I have three black powder pistols, including an 1860 Colt, and maybe someday I will have all 3 pistols in the same video.
Loved the vidio
Thank you Steven!
Ran out of gas in the desert. Went to get gas, by the time I got back........
👍😁
Sweet! There's just something about shooting the Holy Black, though. I've tried nearly all the synthetics, including the pellets, in my Ruger Old Army, and I get the most enjoyment from the good old-fashioned black powder. Only problem is finding it for sale, anywhere. I was buying it from a Mountain Man blackpowder club, but they seem to have gone underground or dissolved their club.
bonjour magnifique vidéo de présentation sur ce remington pietta en deux calibre 45 acp et 44 poudre noire merci de se partage vidéo sympathique le champs tir cordialement
You really can switch cylinders in just a couple of seconds. It's a nice pistol.
Great revolver, I have the same setup. Getting it at a pawn shop with the .45 conversion cylinder in place was a big $core. It's cheaper to buy the blackpowder cylinder than the .45 cylinder, as you are well aware, congrats my friend. Shooting black powder is just enjoyable, it's a nice slow day and it allows you to take your time and appreciate shooting more than just plinking off 50 rounds in a couple of minutes. Of course, the "mandatory" cleaning afterwards is the one drawback. Luckily, we have sons that needed to be taught. 😉🤠 Best wishes.
Clint did did carry extra loaded cylinders for his Remingtons in the climactic gunfight of "Pale Rider".
My conversion cylinders fire .45 Colt cowboy loads. Beautiful pistols.
Aww! I miss the old pale green Dodge pickup!
Ive been thinking about buying this exact firearm myself. This video is great!
Nice little pistola. You really got a good deal. I haven't watched your channel in a while. But I'm going to start watching your channel again. You are usually pretty entertaining. The first thing I thought of was a Clint Eastwood movie when I saw you change the cylinder. By the way I don't like what you did to my car. 😁
i have a set of ubirties u can go up to 1350 fps with no problems but a ubirti is a higher quality in metals used in the gun . which also make all the black powder guns for colt just colt goes through them before they put colts name on them . mine shoot cap and ball and converts to 45 long colt . i also have a colt 1851 navy that converts to 38 special but it not as good as the remington on switching out the cylinder. when colt gets a gun from ubirti they do a 3x pressure test on them to make sure they are good to have the colts name on it which a remington model is stronger then the colt with the full frame
I bought one of these Pietas in 1999
for $90.00 +/- at a shop north of Richmond, VA.
Now they go for 3-4 times that amount around here.
In VA and MD black powder firearms are not regulated. Pay your money and walk out the door.
Now that would be a revolver that I would like to own, ( with those cylinders ) and probably will, as soon as we can vote again.
I do wonder about that Alfa Romeo being left out there like that, seems a shame.
Hey Mixup, you could call that pistol Ole Smokey lol. Nice to see you back!!
I'm glad to be back and we hope to make lots of videos over the coming months. We will post a new video tomorrow morning.
》That’s all actually very, very cool!
Brother I've been waiting for this video! If those conversation cylinders weren't so expensive I'd have me a couple fo sure!
Awesome video, thanks Thumbs-up ~John
Yeah, those cylinders are expensive but man o' man, they are a blast to load and shoot. Have a great weekend and Happy Easter, John.
He carried an 1861 Remington with conversion cylinder and also a hard rubber double version of it.
I have never loaded black powder, it seems like a lot of work but it isn't always about shooting but about the entire experience .
I have that exact same pistol but with the Taylor and Co forty five lc cylinder.. and mine is a six shot.. that seems odd to me.. rather have the acp cylinder as that is a cal I reload for and have lots of brass
Always enjoy your videos. I have always been wanting a cylinder for my emf 1860 colt Hartford model. The ones I saw were 45 colt but 45 acp would be cheaper. May have to get one. I wonder why they called these 44 caliber revolvers if they use .454 lead bullets. I always wondered about this. I don't know what the diameter of the bullet is when it cuts a ring off while loading. Maybe that's why. Thanks for the video.
It is the bore diameter. Old guns were measured across the lands in the barrel. Modern guns are measured by bullet size that fits the rifling grooves. Add .006 per side for rifling depth (.012 total) to .44 and you come up with .452
@@morrismonet3554 thank you. 😊🙏 I learned something new today.😊👍
Remind me off old Texas with Tanto and white horse 🐎
Very interesting. Learned something new today.

Alec Baldwin prefers a Pietta replica of a later revolver.
Funny--Well Said !
@@paulbrungardt9823 BTW. Is there any chance you could demonstrate a Standard Manufacturing .45 lc revolver? It is similar to the famous Colt SAA revolver.
That's a neat gun, man!
L liked your presentation. But there is one concern. Most muzzeleloading ranges I have been to do not allow you to pour powder directly from the powder container (ie Flask, Horn or canister) into the cylinder chamber or down the muzzle of the firearm. What is allowed is pouring powder into a separate measure and from the measure into the firearm cylinder chamber or muzzle of the fiream. Reason is safety due to the risk of a spark remaining on the firearm is fired. This is a real concern as I have personally witnessed a shooter getting a very singed hand when a spark lit off the powder being poured.
Thing of beauty!
those lubricated wads are useless. when you compress it it pushes the lube out into the powder. you just end up with more unburnt gunk. there used to be a channel that did a series on loading these for the best accuracy and reliability, but after a couple months they put everything behind a paywall then disappeared.
I have one of those in .44 BP with a spare cylinder that I can preload. Mine has a 7.5 inch barrel. I love it. Kind of hate the cleaning part though...lol
I was going to buy that car..😮
I can give you a really good deal on that car!
Very cool combination gun.
There must be an interesting story behind that Alfa. I used to live in New Mexico, and if your car broke down out in the desert you wanted to get it towed ASAP, otherwise it would end up like the car in this video.
You, by yourself, in the desert with black powder? Keep em coming!!
Koğboy müziğı renk katmış... toplu beşli derlerdi bu tabancaya eskiden.....
I wouldn't like to say what Mr Eastwood packed in Pale Rider as I haven't seen it for years. The only ones I remember are the Model 29 and .44 Auto Mag in his Dirty Harry films.I have read that the Model 29 was modified to fire .45 Long blanks as maybe they couldn't get blanks in .44 Magnum/Special?
Interesting...I never heard that Clint's Model 29 may have been modified to accept .45 Long blanks but it is certainly possible. I know that Hollywood uses '5-in-1 blanks' which work in several firearms, including the .44 Magnum.
