  • Are Federal Small Game Bird Shot rimfire cartridges really effective beyond five or six feet? Not really. Watch as I shoot this ammo through two revolvers and a lever action rifle.

      The crimped ones have been around loooong before the capped ones. I prefer the capped ones in an automatic pistol because they actually feed, whereas the crimped ones will not.

    Another excellent video. I had a rat problem in my garage back in the early 2000's when they discovered the dog food stored there. I found the crimped .22LR shot rounds seemed to pack more of a punch than CCI capsule type rounds. I want to say I was using Winchester crimped shot, but it was long ago.
    I was considering stepping up to a smoothbore designed specifically for .22WMR shotshells (Marlin Model 25MG) but I suppose the rats got the gist and stopped invading my garage.
    Even with rifling, which spreads those patterns like crazy, those crimped .22LR shotshell did the trick if within 15 feet.

    Way back when, these were used at the Aircraft storage Depot AMARC in Arizona. Rattlesnakes could climb the undercarriage legs and nest in the wheel bays. $10 saturday night specials from local pawn shops with .22 snakeshot did the job. After a days shooting the staff had barbequed rattlesnake with a side salad and a cold beer. Ice cream to follow and another cold beer. Good old days.

    I went to the father's day weekend gun show here in Montgomery yesterday and found an unusual item , I walked the tables and went back to the item , and bought it .
    It turned out to be a N.I.B. Marlington first year production 1894 .45 long colt , 11+ years old made 2011-2012 ,
    I've always had the .44 magnum , the .45-70 , and a couple of years ago the 1894 in .22 magnum , this is my first .45 long colt ,
    I'll let you know how it shoots soon .

We used to shoot sparrows out of our fruit trees with Remington's version of the crimped shot shells, which boasted "size dust" shot. Not sure if anyone else makes one, but Henry actually makes a smoothbore version of their H001 rifle for this very application. It's sold as the Henry Garden Gun.
    I'd find it a bit pricey for something that is only useful with shotshells (it reportedly shoots regularly ammunition horribly), but there may be some demand among farmers and ranchers.

    • @mixup98
      @mixup98  2 місяці тому +1

      You're right, the Henry Garden Gun is pricey with a retail price of about $500. On top of that a 50-round box of Federal .22 bird shot costs more than a box of some 9mm ammo. I just can't see a big demand for the Garden Gun.

      I did a review on CCI .45 ACP shotshells and I got better patterns out of my Bond Arms derringer with a 2" barrel than I did with a 5" 1911 pistol. Rifling in a barrel will indeed have a big impact on lead pellet patterns. A short barrel is definitely an advantage when using shotshells.

      So did my comparison with Federal 25 gr #12 shot and CCI 31 gr also # 12 shot. Used Heritage single action 6.5” barrel; Winchester lever action 20” barrel; and Ruger 10/22 16” (take down), all at 7 yards.
      By far best result was with the 10/22 using Federal. Did not cycle (didn’t expect it to) and shot was concentrated in 3” group! Best I could get out of (more expensive) CCI isn’t even worth mentioning.

    For 22 shotshells, the Federal old-style crimped shotshells are a much better value for the money, than the CCI variety - a box of 50 Federal shells, versus a little tray of 10 or 20 CCI shells.
    Where people run into trouble with the CCI shotshells, is when they try running them through a semiauto pistol, the most notorious being 9 mm Glocks - those shells just don't have enough "oomph" to properly cycle some semiauto pistols - they end up with a misfeed, that little plastic bubble gets broken, and you end up with lead shot dumped all inside your pistol.
    For doing work on our property during that time of the year when snakes and other critters are active, I'll carry my grandfather's old High Standard 9 shot 22 revolver, loaded with Federal shotshells. I've practiced with it, and know how far away I can be to get an effective pattern and where to aim. And depending on the circumstances, less chance of "collateral property damage" with those 22 shotshells, than with the CCI shotshells I have for my Glock 40 S&W.

  • @MichaelPoage666
    @MichaelPoage666 2 місяці тому +2

    I had some of the CCI shot for my .22 when I was a kid. It was unimpressive, and I didn't try it again. But now, I've got one of those Bond Arms derringers that shoots either .45 Colt or 410 shotgun. I found some .45 shot shells at a gun show, and I've got some various .410 shells. I'm planning to compare the two next month when I go camping.

    I remember grabbing a few boxes of these shells in the crimped shells. When I was a young man and my father at the time would grab a box, hand it to me with his ruger bear cat which I still have btw . And send me to the barn and tell me to whittle down the rats and snakes. "Aaaand feed the cows while I'm there." 😂
    I also remember finding a large cotton mouth in the barn one time and I nailed it 3 times on the head from point blank range of about a foot and a half with this shot.. 😮 It bounced off it. 😂 Good thing I always had standard rounds and at the time there seemed to be a surplus and popularity of the long rounds, not long rifle. But longs. I also inherited my father's boy hood hand me down to him, of his Winchester HC 62 A pump. 22 so old it had a browning, instead of a bluing. Still have it too, it accommodates short, long, and long rifle. Many many rabbits and squirrels on that rifle. My very first .22 rifle was a colt stagecoach. Can't find them anymore. I've looked for about 10 years and they just aren't out there. Went through a stupid stage and traded it for something ridiculous. A Honda trail 90.. Underage beer and a whole Lotta stupid went in that trade.. 😂

I have the plastic-dome CCI's and the Federal's that you used here. I bought them to shoot mice; if I got close enough to hit one, I think the mouse would run off laughing his butt off! The last box/card of CCI's I bought were $12.00 for 20 rounds. I DO mean my Last box! Speaking of shotshells.... I'd love if you'd pick up one of DoubleTap's Snake shot options and test it out. They run a lightweight wadcutter (full caliber) behind a load of shot, capped by a foil. The result seems to be greatly diminished spreading (typical problem with rifled bores) and the backup of a lightweight wadcutter for being more effective on small game.

Used an old Native trick that Dad taught us, that apparently began with natives, snakes, and bow and arrows. They tend to follow whatever is closest when provoked, and keep their head locked onto it, be it barrel end, or end of arrow being slowly circled. Pop 'em right the first time that way. Even tho damn things wiggle and squirm and try to strike after they're long dead. Always weirded me out. Family ranch was sage brush, scab rock, and rattlers.

      @@mixup98 You've very welcome! There's so little video data I could find on this product but the one I did, showed very good shot patterns at reasonable range, compared to anything I've seen from CCI.

    I've heard that since the rifling actually causes increased spread, shorter barreled .22s actually provide better performance. Might be worth a try.

    • @Just1American1966
      @Just1American1966 2 місяці тому

      That was made clear in the video. The revolvers patterned significantly better than the rifle did.
      Maybe some cheap old Jennings might be best. They have short barrels and their rifling is typically pretty weak.

    Good video. Federal 22 shotshell is tough on the dinosaurs. Winchester, Federal and Cascade International all make crimped 22 LR shotshell, although hard to find. CCI of course makes the shotshell with the plastic capsule. 22 Magnum shotshell has much more punch. Savage smooth bore 22 extends the maximum effective range from six feet to 15 feet. Well done.

    Some of the early .22 shotshells were loaded with sand instead of #12 shot. I was told that they were used in gallery guns to ensure that carnival midway target booths would not suffer from a lack of money from giving out too many prizes. The erosive effects on rifling were pretty pronounced after a short time and soon those gallery guns would show up on the market needing only at good reaming to be entirely useful out to 40 feet or more. I used to get a box of these for 50 cents, and shorts, CB and BB caps were 25 cents a box.

    For home defense, this is intriguing. The patterns I saw would definitely discourage the bad guys, they would only know they’ve been shot, not with what, and it would clear a hallway out pretty quickly. Probably good ammo for family reunreunions 😂
    Nobody gets hurt too badly, but everyone gets to make their point.

    You know I use my wrangler for the same thing with those shells. The rifling in the rifle Does affect the pattern like you say, but it's amazing if you use a garden gun with that same little shell quite the Difference. You should do a video with that same shell, And a garden gun. I think people would really interested in the results they're Impressive.
