Everyone has a preference based on perceived functionality.
Mine is Ruger Revolvers, Ruger builds their Revolvers like a tool not a Swiss Clock, so, yeah, the Ruger action isn't going to be as complex and delicately fine as a S&W, but that old Ruger Revolver won't fail you.

I've had two fail me. Both .44 mag. One was a cooked forcing cone, and timing. The other is timing . They fixed the first one for free. I haven't sent the other back yet. They don't last long with hot .44 mag.

I’m pretty happy with Ruger’s custom service. I bought a SP101. The timing was screwed up right out of the box. Sent it back, they replaced all of the internal parts and sent it back no questions asked. It’s run perfectly ever since.

I have an old New Model BlackHawk and a Security Six, from the 1980's.
Paid just $200 for the SS and $150 for the BH. at my local pawn & Gun. in 1986/87
I really like the new RedHawk, 8-shot in 357, BUT WOW, it is expensive.

I never changed the barrel. I foolishly sold it although at the time it didn't seem so. Bought it at Sportmart. There gone now I guess. was the chrome one. Also bought S&W 29 & 27. That was the 44mag. and 357mag. They were also 8 in and both chrome. Sold them too. Bought all 3 same time, no questions just 3 day wait. Those days are long gone. I own over 30 revolvers but I started shooting pistol back in 1977 with a S&W 27 6", I now prefer my model 27 4", but I do own several Colts including a Python, I just love revolvers

  • @wellshutchins6885

My first handgun was a new 6" Python purchased in '75 from the San Francisco Gun Exchange. Yes, they actually had gun stores in SF back then. I took it to the range on Bay Farm Island. Every once in a while when shooting double action the hammer would drop and the trigger would jerk forward forward. I took it back on Tuesday, and they said it would be ready in a couple of weeks. I said "I paid $399.00 bucks for what I thought was supposedly fine gun and I need it for a trip this weekend." It was ready on Friday. - BTW, I sold it about two years later to a bank guard friend for $300... makes me sick every time I think about it.

Kinda sounds like my story....I too, bought a 6" Python although in '76....love it, reloaded many rounds for it. Was in the steel fab & machine shop bus. w/ my dad for over 50yrs. After reloading, i'd take out back and see how my loads were doing trying to penetrate some 1/4" and 3/8" plate. Then had a cleaning lady cleaning up my place and found out a/b a week later after she was long gone...that my beloved Colt was gone - stupid me....shoulda never left her up there by herself. Later in the local news, discovered her and her loser boyfriend were arrested for stealing steaks at the local grocery store - that never got my gun back, but man how stupid of me - best of recollection prob. paid btw $300 -$400 back then ~ (Chalmette Jewelry & Sporting Goods ) Chalmette, La.

If the cylinder stop has been bent, (happened to a friend's Rossi. 38 ) the gun will be out of time. Even a little can cause lead to shave and be spit out the gap between the forcing cone and the front of the cylinder. A correctly sized dowel will catch on the cylinder face.

& the question.. i have a model 66 -2 S&W,2.5” that my brother gave me that i think i is my favorite.it’s the one that really got the ball rolling on liking them so much..but…my friend, since we were children ,asked me to help him with his dads guns after he passed away a couple years ago. Rick knew that i was into hand guns .all guns really. y’all get it. anyway, I’ve never seen so many guns that were mostly special ordered, according to the receipt in the boxes. & never shot .some didn’t look like it had been opened since leaving the factory. The 1st one that caught my eye was a 66 no dash.he’d ordered with pearl grips. I liked it’s symmetry a little bit better than mine + the recessed chambers in the cylinder .There more reasons but that’s the one that i would like to have. It had a 2.75” barrel & that made a difference in my opinion. the grips ..no. not my thing. thinking maybe a new set of S&W checkered wood and a Tyler T .dk if i’d go brass or copper but thinking one of those would be good. mine came with degrading gooey rubber originals that i switched out for black & red VZ G10 .had the wood ish clasic/modern look that i thought would look right with the leather lined kydex STX own with pull the dot snaps & nice looking leather straps (not STX 2.0) if anyone looks at garrett industries web site …It’s not a product that is listed or pictured on there. the wife of the man that owns that place suggested that holster when i was describing what i was wanting in a holster. I was going for a classic/ modern type theme & with a black nylon kore belt , i think i achieved what i was going for. that belt was so much more supportive than my regular everyday ,fairly thick ,black leather belt from cabellas that i’d been using . I didn’t know what I didn’t know but kept hearing what great belts kore had and finally got one when i saw a sale. had to see what all the hype was about. For anyone who is thinking about getting a kore, the nylon is stiff and uncomfortable for quite a while.I only wore it with that gun.didn’t expect it to ever be comfortable.2-2.5 years into occasional wear, i noticed it had taken the shape of my hips.Like regular belts do. much better. i wear it all the time now i & it hasn’t started to wear out at all. I figured the track part of it would have problems with the edges that click rounding down with use.. and/or would crack.Nope.other than having to run a lighter over both ends…the exposed tag end started showing very slight signs of fraying at around 3-4 years so i went over it with a bic and kinda rolled the top layer of nylon over & rounded it in a little .other than that, looks like new but better. highly recommend but over kill for light guns. cannot speak to the leather version.don’t have one but will eventually. I d venture to bet it would be fine with any gun & extra mags, speed loaders ect on the other side. the have a buffalo leather option too. last i checked. weight ratted for 8-6& 4lbs. (nylon-buffalo & regular full grain cow leather) apologizes for the belt tangent. I might seem like a belt salesman but i’m not. There’s so much STUFF ppl say that you NEED here online, trying to make a sale. I just want ppl to know a real deal gun belt makes all the difference in the world. I went with nylon because i am in and around water a lot! I have swam with the kore..& every other belt iv owned.synthetics goes better with water. that & wearing on hot sweaty humid days is what really made the belt break in.FYI. thx for the video & tips.

I'm at a loss for words here...
    Wha-???
    ------
    I'm *ol' school.
One hand only: (put other hand behind your back if necessary)
    Finger on trigger
Thumb on hammer (Do NOT drop hammer)
Cycle smoothly and RAPIDLY about 6-7 times.
Cylinder should lock up crisply each time at full cock. (Use thumb to return hammer upon activating trigger)
We should end up in absolute perfect alignment with forcing cone ON EACH CYCLE and at the END.
    Congrats!
    You're done!
Next test (D/A only) is realistically 2-3 cycles: (it takes practice and you should utilize Weaver grip)-that means no thumb!
Using trigger only, roll cylinder exactly far enough to lock up, then "smoothly" drop hammer.
Do this twice. (3rd is just showing off..or you missed one lol)
    Congrats!
    You're done.
    -------------
No reason to keep dropping hammer in your "second" test, the first test already passed.
The second test is only to feel a crisp roll around and lock up.
The 2 or 3 hammer drops are a sacrifice to feel where it is between "factory" & pure slop.
    Cheers!
    --------------
*60+ yrs handling an firing pins/mechanisms/safeties etc are in many different designs.
Using the old school practice simply allows respect for every type of hammer/firing design and gives instant feedback on condition
    Cheers!
    --------------
And yes it should be CLEAN
But if it doesn't work in FILTH mode, then we have an issue.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to know if a revolver is in time if you do not check to see if the cylinder chamber bore is dead center in the barrel bore when the trigger is held to the rear. I’ve seen MANY revolvers that will pass your test that are waaay out of time.

Timing is about the hand, ratchet, bolt, and cylinder working in sync. This gun did all of those things just fine, although I would have used my finger to cause some drag on the cylinder. If the chamber isn't centered to the bore then it is a manufacturing issue or there's a worn bolt and/or locking groove in the cylinder. We've all seen some play in the cylinder when holding the trigger back. There is a reason for a forcing cone on a revolver. It's for cylinders that aren't perfectly aligned with the barrel.

When I was a much younger man (1982) I trained as an armed security guard. Everyone back then said to buy a Taurus model 80 .38 because they are “good enough” for security guard work. Not knowing much about Taurus at the time I purchased a Smith & Wesson model 10 .38 . Why? My wife at the time said if my life depended on it, she wanted to make sure it worked. I still have it. However, I have since purchased Taurus revolvers .38 and .357 (new and used) and I have had no issues with them. Now, going “off the page” I have purchased an EAA Vindicator (Windicator) German made .357 . Although some would say, it’s clunky, clumsy, heavy (I agree with them) it’s built like a tank! I’ve also purchased a Czech made Alpha Project (imported by Rock Island Armory) .357 . With that particular (snub nose) revolver I wouldn’t say it’s “Smith & Wesson, eat your heart out”. It’s more like “Smith and Wesson, you’ve got competition!”

In 1985 I bought a 44 mag Ruger revolver, with a 10 1/2 inch barrel ! It would drive 3ft. metal stakes in blue rock, effortlessly ! Bought to compete and thought about bear hunting ?

So i just did this with a S&W 686-6 i bought months ago. Only shot one box through it so far. Passed all the tests you did. But on the lock up there IS slight slop as you put it. Its not solid and un moveable like your demonstrated, there is a small degree of play. Is this soemthing to worry about down the road. I bought it brand new no one but me has touched it.
