Congrats on your purchase! They are so much fun, I’m getting ready to do a review on the the metallic set of the Derwent paint pan sets. Im really curious on how they act on a toned watercolor paper. I have some ideas for these if all goes well. :)
I have a 6 pan set that came in my sketch box and I found that the type of paper makes a huge difference in how they react. The paints do much better on mixed media papers or sketch paper that are lighter weight. Also wanted to point out that glowing embers and burnt embers are reversed according to the set I received. My biggest complaint is that Derwent didn’t label the pans so you could verify the pan with it’s swatch. I am still playing with my set and haven’t finished a piece yet but I have swatched them on 5 different papers - a student grade sketchbook, a 90 lb mixed media pad, a cold press watercolor 110 lb 25% cotton sketchbook, a hot press 140 lb 100% cotton paper block, and the 120 lb 100% cotton cold press pad that came in the sketch box. I got the best results on the mixed media, and the cold press papers. Hopefully, this is helpful.
Thank you Shelly that is great to know! 😀 I’ve only used them for the lion charcoal piece and I tried it on Pastelmat for a background. It worked fine. It took a little longer to dry with a hair dryer then normal and I did notice that around where I taped off the paper it started to spread color underneath a little but I was using a lot more water on that side.
How are you liking these after you’ve had them for a few months? Ive just ordered and waiting for them to arrive. Im looking forward to trying some portraits with these.
I’ve used them just for a background wash so far, but I like that it gives you a watercolor look with charcoal. It’s nice to cover large areas really quick. So I do absolutely love them for this. So excited for you getting your set!! Yay!! 😀👩🎨
@@dcfineart1562 me too! I do portraits in mainly graphite, but the last 8 months or so have been learning charcoal , pastel and watercolor, so hoping to do some mixed media with all of them. I like the idea of them being semi permanent, like the intense, which i use alot.
Just bought a set, also have the other Derwent paint sets a great product.
