Derwent usually credits artists on the the tin and in their signage at trade shows. This might have been work for hire or maybe the artist didn't want to be credited. Who knows? I can say Derwent, the American team anyway, is excellent to work with. I haven't used the charcoal paint pans as I like more color so I knew they wouldn't be my cup of tea. Renesans mates a granulating liquid charcoal that is wonderful to mix with other paint. Comes is a huge tube too! I tried making charcoal watercolor once with powdered charcoal, water and gum arabic and it got so moldy and gross 😆

Thorough and honest review. Very well expressed and presented... I haven't tried it yet & am not endorsing it, but am curious about Nitram Fusain Aquarelle Charcoal Watercolor
that comes in a little tin. I might try that sometime, as well as the Schmincke product you demo'd here. Thank you, Becca! 🙂

That Derwent charcoal looks just sad…
I got the Schmincke watercolor charcoal in 5 ml tubes to try, but I don’t know what to do with it. I am really enjoying the water soluble graphite from Artgraf in a small metal tin (not the putty) that thing can go quite dark, has some graphite sheen, but it is not overwhelming, creates interesting textures both diluted and in masstone, and keeps my hands clean (I can’t stand graphite on my hands). So, I can really recommend it if you haven’t tried it yet.

My jaw dropped seeing thia video. I struggle with derwent tinted charcoal pencils coming out too strong. I am able to see these so light for the fist time. In the pencil firm you can barely tell one from another because they are so dark (and I mean the most colorfull shades). I think the binder is the problem. I don't like fixative, and I struggle with "fixing" the pencils with water alone...

How do you know that these are mixed with ink? I cannot find this information anywhere 🤔

you are basically trading charcoal technique with watercolor technique...

I bet these would have worked better as tube paint than they do as pans. Less energy necessary to get em ready to play, less need for a stiff brush...
I bet these have some uses but Derwent sure does seem to make a lot of gimmicky sets, don't they
