@@TinkerWithTools This. Had the m18 Surge for a day and I pushed it as far as you could in driving on the skew and pushed the bad angling. It made it just... easy and effortless. I am really impressed.
Definitely the surge for me. (Although I’ve got the m18 model) Much quieter, and easier to feather precise driving tasks, and still plenty of power to get the job done. If I’m stuck running a big 6,8, or 10 inch lag, I’m grabbing one of my impact wrenches and a bit adapter
Got surge, probably my favorite driver. If I need more power I always can get something bigger, but for my job surge is plenty. Really makes the difference if working inside some acoustic box where every impact hammers your ears.
Both the M12 & M18 Surge have a lower threshold to impacting, meaning you could use less foward pressure on the drill to install or remove fasteners such as Phillips head screws. Works great when you can't get enough leverage to push the drill into the screw head slot. But that lower threshold impacting also leads to an overall lower maximum torque you could apply.
Surge 4 me. It may be slower/weaker/whateverer. But that is the one tool that is irreplaceable for me. Invaluable tool to have as an Aircraft mechanic.
I’ve used impacts for 20 years and after I got the surge I never want to use my other impacts. The quiet nature and trigger control make it so much nicer to use. Of course I wouldn’t screw off a deck with an m12 surge but for everything else it’s so much nicer. Hydraulic impacts are the way to go!

Love the surge, but Gen3. If they ever do a Gen2 surge that can do what the Gen3 can do...then i will take another look.
I have both. The surge was my daily for almost two years. I think I might have stressed it a bit from driving too many long screws cause it doesn’t have quite the power it once had. The new impact has been really nice. I just make sure not to require M18 level tasks from it.
I'm fairly new to impacts still, but, in regards to sound it really is like comparing between a jackhammer & a small ratcheting screw driver lol just by way of sound
I install AV equipment, smart boards, wall speakers, sound racks, cart assemblies, etc. I got the m12 surge and I love that little thing. My esrs ring a lot less after work these days after 8-9 hours of assembly.
The M12 surge is very smooth and precise and yes it is quieter. Also doesn't Have the vibration that the standard impact driver does. The reality is it's heavier and it's slower and it uses batteries quicker but for me it definitely has a place. I still find myself using the standard impact driver when speed is What I'm after
As an HVAC tradesmen I like the surge better for service calls and a few odd jobs here and there, it’s perfect for doing inspections and maintaining a quiet work place, specially with elderly people around, to me it feels more professional. The Gen 3 non Surge Driver is more suitable for full-on medium duty jobs where sound suppression or subtleness is not a necessity
I have the Gen 2, the Gen 3, & the Surge. I use the Surge as my daily driver because it's way quieter. I just wish it had the lights like the Gen 3 because that's the only reason I would want to use the Gen 3 over the Surge. My only gripe about the Surge is that it starts pulsing earlier than the other Impacts that let it just spin under lower load without impacting. Other than that, absolutely love it.
I run lags in with a trade grade drill anyway. For regular 1-3" screws of all types, my m12 surge is 80% as fast as any 1/4" impact out there, and 80% quieter, smoother, and more precise. Easy tradeoff. I never strip out masonry anymore with those nasty blue screws. To be clear, even the m12 Surge will rip the full thread channel clean with one impulsive squeeze of the trigger. But it is also easier not to.
Easy when speed and extra impact punch are needed DONT reach for the surge. My coworker has one. First time I used it I thought it was broke. They are slower but more controlled with almost no vibration and very quiet.
Normal + : Speed, Great Power. Surge + : Great control. Low noise for an impact. Normal - : A bit fast and twitchy. Extremely loud. Might snap/strip screws. Personally I'd use the Surge for comfort and grab the normal if I run into some tough long screws and tough material.
Use the surge. Ears love it, use it for most fasteners and drilling modes. Yes even concrete, should use a hammer drill but they don't make a surge hammer drill. Lol wish they would.
