I have both as well, I use my M12 stuff on the daily, and M18 on bigger jobs. M12 has my heart. When I first got M12 stuff, I was so impressed. Still am to this day, my M12 Fuel 2553-20 I use every single day.
If that's your top concern, I'd recommend the M12 install driver. With the inside corner head and/or the right angle head, it can Get into even tighter spaces
Not xc 5.0. It’s a high output 5.0. Xc and high output are very different batteries. I won’t even touch an xc battery. All my m12/m18’s only run high output or forge batteries.
Excellent video! Answered every question I had. I use my m18 to drill holes with paddle bits (1" and under) and hang tvs with lag screws where that extra power matters. Been going strong for like 6 years now. And yes, it gets hot.
Moved over to the m12 for work. I can actually fit it in my pouch without it falling out, love the grab angle when it's hanging with that hook in the top corner, and the weight is a huge bonus. Never slaps you in the bag if you turn around too fast with it hanging on the front of your belt either 😅
For years I would only buy M18 tools and I would thumb my nose at the M12 tools thinking they were to small and underpowered. I’m closer to 60 years old and I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and I made the switch to the M12 tools and I couldn’t be happier. They are smaller, lighter and have plenty of power to get the job done. I still have all my M18 tools and use them when needed, but more often than not when I’m working on something I’ll grab the M12 tool without even thinking about it.
All depends on what you do If you’re building and running big screws, you want 18 volt If you’re fixing things, or just running smaller screws. 12 volt I have both. And actually use the fuel screwdriver in preference to either impact. Snap fewer screws with the clutch But the m12 fuel impact is so compact. I wish they would update the fuel screwdriver as it’s basically a gen 2 drill with a bulky 1/4 inch hex collet
I have both the M18 and M12 surge drivers, both older models I primarily use them to drive 3 1/8" (GRK) screws Hands down for weight and performance I go with the M12 with the low profile High output 2.5 battery

Based on his video, I went with the M12 hammer drill and impact driver kit. It works great for doing stuff around the house. If I was a Pro using it for work, I would have gone with the M18. If you're going to buy an M18 if you have an M12 Fuel, the M18 Fuel is pretty much mandatory due to the larger performance gap. Also the M18 Fuel is pretty compact too. I have an M12 Fuel impact driver and hammer drill, I might get an M18 Fuel drill and impact driver combo kit.
I'm in the same situation, except that I also have the M18 Fuel hammer drill. All I need to add to my collection is the M18 Impact driver. However, I will try to refrain from purchasing it, because I don't want to be on the verge of being a tool collector, which I probably am. LOL
I bought the M18 Fuel combo with 2 5.0 batteries last year. Great tools, except the hammer drill driver's electronic clutch is a bit too strong. At setting 1, it'll still strip when using smaller screws into thin sheet metal. That's its only "flaw". Just bought the M12 Fuel combo, and I suspect I'll rarely use my m18 drill now. Already converted the M18 Impact Driver into a 3/8 drive Impact wrench, so I use the M12 Fuel impact driver for work.

I’m in the M18 camp. Having smaller hands (here come the gags!) I dislike the ergonomics of the M12 and its stem bat rays. If Milwaukee can come up with a Forge Bat ray that’s like the Dewalt 1.7ah Powerstack in terms of size I think the M18 will be the compelling choice.
Yellow bird passing by, I've had drill and impact from 2014. A set of lighter tools that can do well while on a 15ft ladder is always appreciated. Also nice to be able to charge two voltages on one charger.
M12 is THE BEST by far, by ANY brand, and it’s not even close… while I prefer Milwaukee M18 fuel tools over all other 18-20v tool brands, I could honestly really be fine using any one/brand and happily get by… The M12(fuel) tools on the other hand are straight up IRREPLACEABLE GOD TIER never get rid of tools!!! They are so lightweight, so wieldy, so compact, so comfortable, and PLENTY POWERFUL! 99% of the time I’m ALWAYS grabbing M12 first, and if it can’t get it done for some strange reason or I already know it can’t- then I go M18fuel… if I’m driving an ENTIRE bucket of large fasteners ALL DAY, or working with 10” lag bolts, or cutting serious material, then yes I’m going M18. For EVERYTHING else it’s M12 all day everyday must have by my side
Yeah I feel the same way. They're the most practical tools, especially for professionals. There's always a place for the larger more powerful higher voltage stuff, but the M12 is the everyday workhorse
If you can have both then have both, I do…lol! They both have their places of use so whichever one fit the bill the best is what I would get if I didn’t already have them both! The smell of the wood age is great ain’t it…lol!
Awesome video, I have both, but last year m12 my quick go to. But the trigger on the m18 is like wow…don’t need a speed selector and got crazy power over its last yr version. I pick the m18../ m12..both are great
I don't have the M12 impact yet but I have the screw driver and the hammer drill. Weight aside, the weight distribution and clip position matter a lot. Also the fact that M12 is very capable these days and has a huge line of worthy tools when you don't require crushing power and those tools all weigh less and take up less space
I used the m12 Milwaukie for 4-inch self-tapping screws into metal and that made the tool very hot. I was surprised it would do that, but the tool broke that day and I'm a little sad because I liked that tool. The m12 has a comfortable grip and is lightweight and works well in most situations. I am looking for something more durable and suited for more varied tasks.

I like the lights AND the quick lock chuck on the M12. Milwaukee needs to put that on their M18! C'mon already... why doesn't the flagship tool have the flagship features.
I have budget version of the M12 driver and the non-compact M18. The power of the M18 is much higher but I use the M12 90+% of the time light and small form. The M18 is a beast both the impact driver and the hammer drill FYI I’ve been team Red for 40+ years
I work screwing in vinyl replacement windows, going to try out this lightweight M18. for my work I need torque, light weight, Durability, right now im using a Makita LXT 18v. the makita is at the end of its life and well try out this m18 impact
For what I do I grab my M12 Surge 90% of the time. 3 1/2 inch deck screws, no problem, 3 inch cabinet screws no problem and it’s really quiet, my first choice hands down.
All my tools are milwaukee fuel ! I love the m12 line. The problem I have m18 is the way the battery is. In alot of places I have to use and extension, which cuts down on power !! M12 , it just fits and does the job. Plus I can make the m12 smaller in size with smaller batteries. Not sure if it's as small as the compact but the shape of it with the pistol grip and battery, makes it a winner for me. I love using the m12 drill with snake augers under cabinets. Has just the right amount of power to do the job well ! I tried my m18fuel impact and it was just to darn heavy and alot heavier. I know it's not the compact I'm referring to in this situation but hopefully it makes since Just my 2 cents as a life long milwaukee user !
If anybody has the toughbuilt compact drill holster. It seem like the m12 impact is made for it. With the 2.5 high output battery it's perfect. Other tools with bigger batteries feel awkward with it
There's actually a very specific "niche" the new m18's are simply trying to join, hence the performance (imo). *Subcompact* market, most other brands have terrific offerings - for a while now. I myself was surprised to see the m18 impact because of genuinely how small they shrunk a full 18v tool that it makes an m12 (on the head) look like the bigger one?! Lol. I digress. This shows itself a lot more plainly when you look at just the drill drivers by Flex, Ridgid, Dewalt, Makita, and so forth. *Then it starts to make some sense*. I say some, because it's when things are flipped to their impact counterparts, Red is not at the top as the aforementioned ones. But, that's not necessarily their goal either, it's just to have a segment to cater to; Subcompact. I could be wrong, it could be cope, etc. Just a layman's 2cents Idk
Graingers where all your hard earned tax dollars go. Most federal,State,township and municipalities buy from them. Some are even in a binding contract on tools,etc…..
Have to buy a special charging base for that barrel shaped battery or I would have leaned that direction. Just spent like $300 on 2 M18 batteries and the charging base. Insane.
Both...they're different, at least IMHO. If someone told me we were going to install a deck and he had a couple of M12 impact drivers I'd tell him I had a prior commitment. But I was servicing a group of chainsaws earlier this week and used the M12. Better men can probably do that with an M18 but it's too easy to create fastener mayhem. I see the comment below about the screwdriver - I do that sometimes but in general I really need to follow up with a T-handle Torx if I do because small engine/machinery fasteners mostly need more torque than the stick screwdrivers will provide. Speaking of screwdrivers, does anyone still own and use the drill-like M12 dedicated screwdriver?
I'm a construction electrician and highly recommend the M12 Fuel Two-Speed Screwdriver (with 3.0 Compact or 2.5 High-Output Compact batteries) to all of my apprentices. The clutch is excellent for connectors and terminations (from receptacles to panels), and the drill setting is excellent for driving screws (from boxing to other light tasks)... with a small, 'fast', lightweight form. The M18 Fuel 1/4" Impact Driver is excellent for driving screws and other, heavier work, but absolutely not for securing connectors in residential or comercial work, or for terminating anything (ever--except maybe in industrial-? Torque wrench is appropriate, I expect.). The M12 lantern, or whatever they call it, lasts a full day, if memory serves, on medium or low, and lights an apartment suite well (while headlamps help, of course). So: two batteries and two tools, in my experience. Cost-effective; Just charge every night, and maybe at lunch, if daylight becomes sufficient. Easy. I hope that helps someone like it's helped me. I use the 12s a lot in the shop. But on site we use 18s mostly. And I’ll say there’s been more than once that I’ve wondered why I have this big ass 18.
I bought my daughter the M12 kit because her hands are smaller and the grip feels better on the M12. I have the M18 because I want max power, max runtime and I don't care how heavy it is as most of my jobs are not holding the tool over my head.
I have both, m12 fuel for 90% of the time, m18 when you just need more power. But most of the time m12 does exactly what you need and is lighter and more ergonomic

@sxrptz5798 Don't ditch your 18v. Just add the 12v as ypu go. The 18v is great for anchoring lag bolts, deck screws and hackzall/sawzall and other larger projects. The 12v is perfect for jobs like cabinets, door hinges, hanging drywall and quick jobs. I just bought a set of 12v to comlimemt my work. 18v is still mandatory.
@sxrptz5798 I have both. If I need to use a tool, I always go for M12 first. If I need a bigger tool, then I'll use M18. They are just lighter and more compact. Pound for Pound, they are probably more powerful too. The jigsaw is more maneuverable and versatile than the M18. The M12 fuel bandsaw is several pounds lighter and can fit into tighter spaces. The impact fits into smaller spacers, the hackzall too. The M12 ratchets and impacts wrenches are preferred to mechanics over the M18. Way easier to work in an engine with an M12 Stubby Impact Wrench than any M18.You can also fit more in a packout too. M12 offers rotary tool, die grinder, band file, and a lot more compact tools

Ill say this. The lag bolt test, better effeincicy would have been acheived if both were wrenches instead of drivers since they could take the socket without the adapter peice.
Okay, I can't be the only guy thinking that, for this 'cheeperest-version' of the M18 FUEL 1/4" hex driver, Milwaukee kicked their lesser cuz'n, RYOBI's ass, and stole the least desirable colet that requires both hands to change the freaking bit🤬. My M12 FUEL is 'push-to-insert', as it should be standard, across the freaking board for the brand. The M18 FUEL version that's only $10.00 more also has the Tri-LED on the nose. Having used both, I still like the M12 FUEL better because of size, and punch. That being said, if I was building a deck, I'd spring for the M18 because it makes it all day on a 2Ah.
I thought the same thing. The M18 Fuel Impact Driver isn't very large at all and has great power. I guess his goal was to pick the smallest of the two. Compact vs Compact. The M12 Fuel is strong enough for my IT work, so I converted my M18 Fuel Impact Driver to a 3/8 drive Impact wrench.
Apples to oranges to grapes to melons, etc. One was fuel, the other wasn't - the M18 might even be their brushed one (I didn't see it say "BRUSHLESS" on it). One was released in the past year, the other is ooollddd. I wouldn't have been surprised if the M12 beat it. The newest M18 FUEL with a Forge battery will SMOKE both of those
Nobody ever mentiones the bad handle on the m12 tools. I bought the m12 drill because of the power in addition to my m18 drill because i thought it might be nice to have a little smaller lighter drill as well. But I ended up returning it because it sits so bad in the hand that I prefere the little more weight than this bulky handle. The M12 grips gets bigger where your fingers get shorter. It is acutally a bad design. Other Brands like Dewald do a better job with this. Don't get me wrong... the m12 drill fells from the power and the motor very nice especially for the weight and size. Also the clutch is better than the one from the M18. But there is a reson why every tool (where is not the battery in the handle) has the handle going smaller when it goes down where your ringfinger and the pinky sits. I have normal to large hands and I can grip it but it doesn't feel comfortable and as nice as my m18.
I agree totally I was so hyped to get the M12 impact and hammer drill till I actually went to the store and grabbed the handle terrible it's way too big for them little tools just feel terrible I want the M12 planer hopefully that feels better!!!!
Not really sure what you guys are talking about, my m12 handles fit very nicely into my hand and are very comfortable to use. I have smaller sized hands too. Why do your smaller fingers need to wrap all the way around the handle? I still have perfect control of the tool...
@@Shrouded_reaper Ergonomics. Every device/ tool thing that you take in your hand is made that you can wrap your hand properly around it. And Milwaukee does it as well when they have the space for it (look at m18 tools) So it is actually a bad design but they wanted the smaller design more than proper ergonmics and thats why they went with this design.
Mostly use ryobi 18v. Got an M12 heated jacket (love it other than battery placement). Needed more batteries so started buying more M12 tools. Happy with the M12 tools(small size and power). Haven't needed to buy M18 tools yet. Had some ridgid 12v but passed them onto other family members.
Advantage to having the m12 stuff is generally for automotive work and the extra tools like the hackzall and the cordless ratchet. M18 is for doing bigger jobs but auto mechanics in the shop I worked at generally used m12 fuel stuff for everything that wasn’t an air impact job. Some of the guys used snap on cordless ratchets but the batteries for them weren’t as good as other snap on stuff

I've spent hundreds on M18 packs. They are shit. They go bad and refuse to take a charge after VERY light use and delicate handling. M12 seem to be better BUT... I was just charging a 6ah pack, and it got hot and the rubber coating melted. Milwaukee is shit compared to DeWalt. IMO

yeah, i feel like my m12 is as heavy (tool wise) as the m18. the m18 impact is pretty damn small without a battery.

*Subcompact* market, most other brands have terrific offerings - for a while now. I myself was surprised to see the m18 impact because of genuinely how small they shrunk a full 18v tool that it makes an m12 (on the head) look like the bigger one?! Lol.
I digress. This shows itself a lot more plainly when you look at just the drill drivers by Flex, Ridgid, Dewalt, Makita, and so forth. *Then it starts to make some sense*. I say some, because it's when things are flipped to their impact counterparts, Red is not at the top as the aforementioned ones. But, that's not necessarily their goal either, it's just to have a segment to cater to; Subcompact.

Graingers where all your hard earned tax dollars go. Most federal,State,township and municipalities buy from them. Some are even in a binding contract on tools,etc…..
The hospital I work at buys from them. I’m in receiving so I see what comes in. Maintenance buys granger all the time. I just shake my head
Have to buy a special charging base for that barrel shaped battery or I would have leaned that direction. Just spent like $300 on 2 M18 batteries and the charging base. Insane.
Both...they're different, at least IMHO. If someone told me we were going to install a deck and he had a couple of M12 impact drivers I'd tell him I had a prior commitment. But I was servicing a group of chainsaws earlier this week and used the M12. Better men can probably do that with an M18 but it's too easy to create fastener mayhem. I see the comment below about the screwdriver - I do that sometimes but in general I really need to follow up with a T-handle Torx if I do because small engine/machinery fasteners mostly need more torque than the stick screwdrivers will provide. Speaking of screwdrivers, does anyone still own and use the drill-like M12 dedicated screwdriver?
I'm a construction electrician and highly recommend the M12 Fuel Two-Speed Screwdriver (with 3.0 Compact or 2.5 High-Output Compact batteries) to all of my apprentices.
The clutch is excellent for connectors and terminations (from receptacles to panels), and the drill setting is excellent for driving screws (from boxing to other light tasks)... with a small, 'fast', lightweight form.
The M18 Fuel 1/4" Impact Driver is excellent for driving screws and other, heavier work, but absolutely not for securing connectors in residential or comercial work, or for terminating anything (ever--except maybe in industrial-? Torque wrench is appropriate, I expect.).
The M12 lantern, or whatever they call it, lasts a full day, if memory serves, on medium or low, and lights an apartment suite well (while headlamps help, of course).
So: two batteries and two tools, in my experience. Cost-effective; Just charge every night, and maybe at lunch, if daylight becomes sufficient. Easy.

I use the 12s a lot in the shop. But on site we use 18s mostly. And I’ll say there’s been more than once that I’ve wondered why I have this big ass 18.
I bought my daughter the M12 kit because her hands are smaller and the grip feels better on the M12. I have the M18 because I want max power, max runtime and I don't care how heavy it is as most of my jobs are not holding the tool over my head.
Not only is the m18 you used is brushed and it still outperformed the m12.
When you go m18 Fuel with a HO battery, it's a beast.

I have both, m12 fuel for 90% of the time, m18 when you just need more power. But most of the time m12 does exactly what you need and is lighter and more ergonomic

@sxrptz5798 Don't ditch your 18v. Just add the 12v as ypu go. The 18v is great for anchoring lag bolts, deck screws and hackzall/sawzall and other larger projects. The 12v is perfect for jobs like cabinets, door hinges, hanging drywall and quick jobs. I just bought a set of 12v to comlimemt my work. 18v is still mandatory.
@sxrptz5798 I have both. If I need to use a tool, I always go for M12 first. If I need a bigger tool, then I'll use M18. They are just lighter and more compact. Pound for Pound, they are probably more powerful too. The jigsaw is more maneuverable and versatile than the M18. The M12 fuel bandsaw is several pounds lighter and can fit into tighter spaces. The impact fits into smaller spacers, the hackzall too. The M12 ratchets and impacts wrenches are preferred to mechanics over the M18. Way easier to work in an engine with an M12 Stubby Impact Wrench than any M18.You can also fit more in a packout too. M12 offers rotary tool, die grinder, band file, and a lot more compact tools
@@sxrptz5798 I just like how compact and lightweight the M12 jigsaw is, has the on off button for the light as well, which is good for me because I cut upside down, I’m going to stick with the 18v because of the battery platform, but the tools I don’t need so much power I’m going to get M12
Ill say this. The lag bolt test, better effeincicy would have been acheived if both were wrenches instead of drivers since they could take the socket without the adapter peice.

I would take the M18 because if you're running lots of tools then the full size batteries can do more stuff.
Comparing apples to apples would be using a m18 fuel gen 4. It’s got ya three lights and fancy modes too.

Okay, I can't be the only guy thinking that, for this 'cheeperest-version' of the M18 FUEL 1/4" hex driver, Milwaukee kicked their lesser cuz'n, RYOBI's ass, and stole the least desirable colet that requires both hands to change the freaking bit🤬.
My M12 FUEL is 'push-to-insert', as it should be standard, across the freaking board for the brand.
The M18 FUEL version that's only $10.00 more also has the Tri-LED on the nose. Having used both, I still like the M12 FUEL better because of size, and punch. That being said, if I was building a deck, I'd spring for the M18 because it makes it all day on a 2Ah.
I thought the same thing. The M18 Fuel Impact Driver isn't very large at all and has great power. I guess his goal was to pick the smallest of the two. Compact vs Compact.
The M12 Fuel is strong enough for my IT work, so I converted my M18 Fuel Impact Driver to a 3/8 drive Impact wrench.
The Ryobi Hp impact is easy tho. push in with one hand and pull and it shoots out.
Apples to oranges to grapes to melons, etc. One was fuel, the other wasn't - the M18 might even be their brushed one (I didn't see it say "BRUSHLESS" on it). One was released in the past year, the other is ooollddd. I wouldn't have been surprised if the M12 beat it. The newest M18 FUEL with a Forge battery will SMOKE both of those
M18 fuel is for contractors generally, most people don’t need the m18 fuel because those are built to be used all day everyday
12v vs 18v db, you don’t have a clue what you are typing. The m18 compact is obviously brushless but you would know all about that

Nobody ever mentiones the bad handle on the m12 tools.
I bought the m12 drill because of the power in addition to my m18 drill because i thought it might be nice to have a little smaller lighter drill as well.
But I ended up returning it because it sits so bad in the hand that I prefere the little more weight than this bulky handle.
The M12 grips gets bigger where your fingers get shorter. It is acutally a bad design. Other Brands like Dewald do a better job with this.
Don't get me wrong... the m12 drill fells from the power and the motor very nice especially for the weight and size. Also the clutch is better than the one from the M18. But there is a reson why every tool (where is not the battery in the handle) has the handle going smaller when it goes down where your ringfinger and the pinky sits.
I have normal to large hands and I can grip it but it doesn't feel comfortable and as nice as my m18.
I agree totally I was so hyped to get the M12 impact and hammer drill till I actually went to the store and grabbed the handle terrible it's way too big for them little tools just feel terrible I want the M12 planer hopefully that feels better!!!!
Not really sure what you guys are talking about, my m12 handles fit very nicely into my hand and are very comfortable to use. I have smaller sized hands too. Why do your smaller fingers need to wrap all the way around the handle? I still have perfect control of the tool...

Every device/ tool thing that you take in your hand is made that you can wrap your hand properly around it.
And Milwaukee does it as well when they have the space for it (look at m18 tools)
So it is actually a bad design but they wanted the smaller design more than proper ergonmics and thats why they went with this design.
Mostly use ryobi 18v. Got an M12 heated jacket (love it other than battery placement). Needed more batteries so started buying more M12 tools. Happy with the M12 tools(small size and power). Haven't needed to buy M18 tools yet. Had some ridgid 12v but passed them onto other family members.
Advantage to having the m12 stuff is generally for automotive work and the extra tools like the hackzall and the cordless ratchet. M18 is for doing bigger jobs but auto mechanics in the shop I worked at generally used m12 fuel stuff for everything that wasn’t an air impact job. Some of the guys used snap on cordless ratchets but the batteries for them weren’t as good as other snap on stuff
The m12 can dismantle an entire engine block. If it can do that it can pretty much handle anything
Honestly it’s just preference.
M12 goes where the 18v cannot.
Buy both that’s the solution !
If you want power get the Gen 4 fuel otherwise the M12 is the go-to

I've spent hundreds on M18 packs. They are shit. They go bad and refuse to take a charge after VERY light use and delicate handling. M12 seem to be better BUT... I was just charging a 6ah pack, and it got hot and the rubber coating melted.
Milwaukee is shit compared to DeWalt. IMO
