Just figured out why I like the M12 grip so much. The back curve in the grip is identical to a Glock 26.

I am a DIY, I can handle the noise with earplugs but dont want to deal with vibration numbing hands. Almost double the cost of surge doesn't make sense for me. Nicely done review. Thx
Glad you mentioned in the end that we won't be doing these kinds of things in the real world. I did buy the Surge a couple of weeks ago for my new job..but was surprised at how quickly the battery drained in the Surge compared to the Regular. But so far no issues with the battery that came with mine
Very nice comparison. I'll never drive anything that big, but seriously happy I made a good guess with choosing the m12 battery platform. The toughest test I'll ever have is taking off the mower blade on my Toro 60V mower with the m12 1/2" Impact Wrench. The drills and drivers worked wonderfully for taking care of the installations I've done on my garage walls. Thank you for all your content!
Great review! Working inside on musical and sound equipment cabinets etc, the surge is smooth and SO much quieter, but about 5oz heavier on the belt. At 62 you notice that crap.. For general outside tool belt, the regular is just lighter and a tad faster. I just added the surge and really like it a lot, a great tool for sure! Thanks!!
Thanks for the video it helped to influence my purchase recently got the 2598-22 kit for $199 from HD. I’m already in the M18 & M12 lineup and I wanted to add to it. The biggest part for me was the difference in speed when driving fasteners. I also don’t need my tools to be quite since I’m already on loud job sites and not in a library.

Should have spaced out the timberlok screws, the added pressure in the wood surrounding the screw might have increased the friction for the surge

Great content, i really looked forward to this video. Please try putting fasteners further apart next time. Whatever impact going 2nd (surge in this instant) has a disadvantage because it's driving a screw next to another screw which is acting like a serrated wedge (since you didn't pre drill) that wedging makes the wood denser in the immediate surrounding area. It's best to screw further away (1.5" minimum) or remove the first fastener before proceeding to other impact or drill. I can appreciate that your screws & bolts from each impact are near to one another so that relative wood density doesn't create an advantage for either. However, be mindful that even within a small section the growth rings have varying hardness/densities (the color variance within each ring has a large light section and a dark thinner line part) the thinner darker aspect of each growth ring is denser so placing fasteners evenly between rings offers least bias or advantage to either impact. Watch your video at 14:47 as surge removes that fat lag bolt, it makes easy work of it being that you already released relative tension on the grain by removing the neighboring lag first--which was way to close for accurate testing.

I've thought the same thing. The wood has GOT to be denser with the first fastener still in, especiallythat closetogether. I think removing it before driving the 2nd fastener in would elicit more accurate results.
I use the regular impact for everyday work. I absolutely adore it. I use it for completely unintended things, such as drilling 6 inch deep 7/8 inch holes. It kicks ass when I need it to in a pinch

I personally have bought and used the Surge, and I've mostly used it for fasteners in metal. It works great, and gas plenty power for most smaller bolts. I've some testing myself and it'll easily break grade 10.9 M6 bolts and severely damage M8 bolts if you let it rip. Would recommend.
These both have their place. I'd use the Surge when working in an apartment, or in a house where the owner is still home while I am doing the work, or when working on a job site where I am in an enclosed location. I always wear hearing protection, but that doesn't mean the neighbors need to be disturbed, so I try to mitigate that.

@@ManCaverTools Exactly. But any time you introduce a medium between the two striking materials, there will be a reduced amount of force applied. But in the end, these are two great tools.

I use the m12 surge for metal fixings/self tappers, I find it fantastic for that type of work, as it is smoother and dose not over tighten the fixings, even if you don’t have it on self tapper mode.
I switched to the M12 surge from the gen 4 M18 fuel and the difference for driving fasters into sheet metal is crazy. My m18 would strip the living hell out of self tapping screws if you weren’t careful with trigger control, but with the surge I can full send the screw on speed 3 and haven’t stripped a single screw yet.
Got the standard, its one of my favorite tools in terms of size to power ratio.
Great for electrician work and just anytime you dont wanna drag a 18v drill around.

Yep 100% agree , M12 impact is perfect for electricians. The M12 soldering iron is worth getting too once you already own the batteries.

Ok, I decided to buy a M12 Surge, and the vibration that you talk about making your hand numb is absent with the Surge I bought. I tried out some 3/8" x 4" lag screws with the M12 Surge and my M18 Surge, and vibration was minimal with both. The little cp2.0 battery didn't care for it very much and drained fairly quickly, but the tool did not cause any numbness from vibration. I could send mine to you to test out next to yours if you like, to see if there is a difference.
Thank you for doing this, since this is the exact dilemma I am in right now. I have a M18 2604 hammer drill/driver, M18 Surge, M18 mid-torque impact wrench, and the M12 4-in-1 (to handle screwdriver and drill applications). I'm trying to decide between these two to round out my 12V tools, and most of what I do is inside somewhere, whether in the garage working on the family vehicles, home projects, or carting my tools to help a friend or two. It doesn't look like there is a lot sacrificed with the M12 Surge like there is with the M18 Surge, so that is encouraging.
One thing I noticed is that you mention the excessive (in my mind) vibration with the Surge that no one else has mentioned in any review I have read or watched. My M18 Surge does not have extra vibration (possibly due to the heavier battery?), so I wonder if there is something wrong with the one you have, especially since less vibration is one of the "benefits" that Milwaukee markets for the Surge?
The M12 Fuel is such an impressive tool line. If I wasn't invested Kobalt and Ryobi I would be into knee deep into this system.
I'm also invested in the Kobalt 24v line and they're fantastic tools. I recently jumped into the Milwaukee M12 line and picked up the M12 fuel hammer drill, impact driver, 3/8 ratchet, and 2 batteries for $229. Small tools with tons of power and when I need more kick, I'll grab my Kobalts.👍

Surprised by the notable speed difference on two of your tests. I’ve had both those tools. Never noticed any significant difference in speed. Love the Surge, much quieter. From your tests, it looks like it’s generally just a bit slower, but under high loads, looks like the standard impact is notably faster. But, as you noted, for those tasks, an 18V tool is probably a better choice anyway.

Milwaukee has a heck of a marketing team. They have an m12 drill, hammer drill, impact, screwdriver, surge, finish driver, and they probably all have the same motor, and we’re buying them like women buying shoes.
From what I’ve seen, the impact beats the surge in torque, speed and price. TWICE as much on Amazon. ...and now I see it possibly beats it on battery life thanks to this video. E-Z decision here.
Some of those larger fasteners I just use the 18V impact wrench so for me the Surge wins with the quieter sound since usually I use up to 3" #8 screws and most of the time #6. Great test though. I was curious how much quieter it really was.

That surge has become my go to tool. You have to get hands on it to understand. The numbers on the box do not tell the tale of it's true strength imo.
What makes the surge really shine is if you try to screw into metal with tek screws. The regular impact is to fast and cams out. While the surge drives the screws perfectly without cam out

@Gerid Hagerman Hopefully you reply. My surge is absolute bs. Can’t even drive a 3/4 inch ductwork screw into so 30 gauge sheet metal. I’ve already sent it to Milwaukee service. Got it back just for it to have no difference. They just picked it up again for it to be serviced again. I’m wondering if I my surge is a lemon or if the surge just blows.

As a plumber i love dewalts one handed sawzall and dewalts oscilating tool is UNMATCHED due to the trigger and the blade change...but i just sold my dcs887 and hammer drill for the Milwaukee m12 impact and hammer drill set since its not like im driving anything bigger then a 2 1/2 inch drywall screw and my god that m12 impact is the best impact for what i need it for as a service plumber

I honestly was leaning really hard towards the regular m12 and so i searched for a video and after watching, I change my mind. Im going for the regular.
I like the video and the tests you did. But I have a slight problem with how you did the tests. You had all of that space on the top of the log and only used so little. For example, putting the screw or any of the things you put in the log could create more pressure around the surrounding bolt. For example, at 14:48 I believe the surge was quicker because there was less pressure on the bolt from the wood since the other bolt right beside it was removed. So I think the surge suffered slightly harsher conditions on some of the tests because of the increased pressure in the surrounding area from the other bolt that was put in beforehand by the regular impact. I don't really know if what I'm saying bakes 100% sense, but since the bolt is not removing ant material and just pushing it aside it compacts it and makes more pressure around it, same reason why a smaller piece of wood will split with a larger screw or bolt going into it. But I still enjoyed your video and just got my own surge!

My gen 2 wa a really loud at first. My Makita 18 v is super quiet in comparison. My rigid18volt is also quiter vs the mid torque. Now my hearing is bad enough I don’t notice much anymore. I’ve used it for 1 1/2-2 years and I can’t sure for sure it’s all related to this tool but it is definitely my most used and loudest tool next to my mid torque 18 volt impact being my other loudest tool but gets light use in comparison.
spoiler alert. surge is more quiet. runs hotter. and uses battery much faster. and has noticeably less power. but is better at controllability for guys who do a lot of dashboard work like flat rate dealership stuff. and the surge will make your hand go numb from vibrations while the other one will not.

I have both m12 and m18 sure and reg driver. The m12 gets used most as I don't often need more power than they can deliver. Nice to have big brother on back up but I don't need a belt with the m12. They're VERY VERY comfy and I like the big grip more too. I bought the m18s for a reason though. They're all bad ass
Last Best Tool did a very key point between the two
as the surge model allow you to slow the speed down when driving screws vs regular one can not do that
I own both M12 and M18 Surges. They make more vibrations than the regular impacts only when driving in large fasteners. On small and regular sizes, they make almost no vibration at all. That is why I don't even own a 1/4" impact anymore. A Surge and an impact wrench is a better way to go.

@@jmac6631 The M18. The platform is much more extensive and the Surge definitely outperforms the M12 Surge. The M12 platform is for people who need compact tools.

Hey fellow Tool freaks! 😁 I would probably pick up the M12 Surge, if I didn’t already have the M18 Surge. The M18 doesn’t get a lotta love, and I don’t quite understand why? I like it and use it whenever I want controlled fastening. It is much quieter, and smoother in comparison to regular impacts. I’m still not wild about Milwaukee ergonomics, and the way the shape of the trigger cuts into my index finger. YMMV. Peace 👍😁🇺🇸

From what I can hear the surge was equal when heavy load in noise loudness. With the 1/2 " lag the surge sounded louder than the impact. The battery usage and vibration are major concerns to me. I will by the impact.Great job comparing the old fashion way, from easy to max load.

Would you say that you can runt the Surge without hearing protection? My Bosch 12V and Makita 18V Impact drivers is far to loud to use without hearing protection.
yes I believe you can. it is much quieter them then the regular impact
It took me a long time to finally get a hydraulic impact. I went with Makita, but I'll say, there isn't a video that does it justice. You would need a well calibrated high quality mic and speaker system to really properly capture the difference, but in person it is night and day. Technically, I think the Makita is right at the level where OSHA recommends hearing protection (assuming you're listening to it all day long), but it doesn't feel like I need hearing protection and it is FAR quieter than my other impact drivers.

Most of my tools are dewalt. But I bought a m12 rivet gun and now I want the m12 line.
How's the grip on the m12? Is the thicker handle uncomfortable? I love the grip on my 12v makitas but I need to upgrade. Just worried I won't like the thicker grip. Tried to test it out at home depot but it's hard to get a good feel for the tools without setting off the damn alarm!!!

I owned both and sold the Fuel. I didn't buy the M12 impacts for the power, so trading power for the quieter operation makes the Surge my favorite. I have an M18 Fuel if I do need more power.

The 2853 on speed 1 was louder and higher sounding than the surge on speed 3. For car fasteners ( obviously not suspension level of fasteners) it's amazing

Hey Dave I know we chatted like on 9 or 10 of your videos but I was wondering if you could do a review of the avid power 1/2 impact wrench from amazon, it claims to have 330 ft/lbs of torque but it also shows it in in/lbs as 4465 which equals 375 ft/lbs if so that be a big thank you

I prefer my surge over the standard. If your driving large fastener(lag bolts) your not gonna like the surge. But every day use. Especially for metal work it's perfect
Do you drive small screws a lot, working with wood, indoors? Get the surge.
Do you drive actual fasteners, use sockets on an adapter, etc? Get the fuel. I’m an auto tech, the m18 fuel impact driver is the one for me, it basically lives with a 1/4 locking adapter in It

The surge might be a tiny bit slower, but it's so quiet, I really like it. To my ears it sounds like the surge has less anvil skip
and that is why they made it :)
With the way the surge mechanism is designed, it can't skip. The surge is limited by the viscosity of the oil in the chamber though. Higher viscosity will be quieter, but restrict speed. Lower viscosity will do the opposite. With the same motor it will always be slower though.
Reminds me of a 250f vs 450f dirt bike sound comparison.
I picked up the regular Fuel. Didn't care about the slightly quieter operation. I'd rather have the extra speed!
Sounds like the surge would be great for driving a lot basic fasteners but you’ll want the fuel if you’re putting in brute fasteners like lag bolts
I have the M12 Fuel and if you use it for small screws it's fine , but when using it for larger screws like 21/2" and up or lag bolts it Sucks , it has great power but the ergonomics of the handle are Horrible , besides the Fat handle, the trigger is low so when you start putting alot of forward pressure on the bigger screws and bolts the nose of the gun constantly dips on you causing your bits to strip and even fall off the screw head , its Retarded, it drives Me Nuts because I do like it , but that Low trigger kills it for me , I mean your probably better off using your middle finger on the trigger like Vince does at VCG Construction . If you match it up to another impact you can see the trigger is about 3/8" lower than the Makita's and DeWalt's trigger , most of these Milwaukee lovers won't tell you that because their such fanboys, but it is what it is , the ergonomics are Horrible.... just my 2 cents ...👍🛠🖖

Yeah, my dad and I build cabinets and the m12 surge has plenty of power for that application. And in the shop the noise reduction in to die for.

I always wondered why sometimes watching TTRs that no sound on the tools. Guess they are editing them out. Doesnt bother me I want to hear the different sounds I use one for work all day. Its quieter but i dont know if its enough to buy it if you already own the standard unless you work in office buildings wear you need to be quite as possible.
After nearly a year of using the M12 Surge over my M18 Brushless impact, I found myself using the Surge more.
Not only because it's quiet, but it's actually what I need when I do service calls, especially in indoor environments such as offices, classrooms, or other areas where noise can be an issue. Granted it may not be powerful compared to the 2553, but it's enough to get my work done.

I’m curious when you are driving in screw’s that large and so close to each other wouldn’t it make the adjacent screw encounter more resistance cause you might be driving it into the first one?

I assume to fairly compare, there is hard/soft spots in wood like the difference between the heartwood and outer areas of the tree, you could separate more on cut timber for sure
Hey the regular M12 kit with a Case battery and charger is $99 dls at Home Depot right now as of November , 15 ,2022 you can’t beat that price. I use both the M18 and M12 lines and can confirm the Surge is a bit quieter. But really your drilling something you are gonna make some sound it’s not like it’s blaring loud. I made the mistake of purchasing the surge last month and I can confirm the Surge does vibrate almost like it’s taking the energy that it’s saving in the quietness and transferring it to your arm. It’s very weird and uncomfortable.
What’s the difference with the standard and the surge?

After using my impact driver all day yesterday I want an M18 Surge now. But the power difference on paper is insane. 450in vs 2000in. I don't need 2000 but 450 seems really low. Maybe I'll just buy some Bluetooth earbuds instead lol

I’d prefer a test of just a bunch of screws ranging in 1/2” to 2-1/2” anything bigger and I’d use a 18volt

I still say, DeWalt has the best handle. Just wish they can come out with larger Ah batteries for their 12v line.
maybe they will in the future. id like to see a 8ah battery
I'm going to disagree on this... The point of this line is to be light weight but still capable. 8 amp batteries in these tool would reach m18 with a 2.0 cp battery weights
Man...I was hoping you would pick a winner. I'm considering the Milwaukee brand of 12V tools to replace my Rigid 12V whenever they eventually die. Milwaukee seems to have the most expansive 12V tool line of everyone in the market. Since Rigid don't make their 12V line anymore when mine die I have to change brands. I've used my Rigid 12V's to actually drive some of the size screws you did on more projects then I thought I ever would have and they are still charging hard! Of the brands that make 12V tools who do you prefer the best?
Stick with Milwaukee. They are more expensive in the short term...but they almost never cancel a whole platform like other brands.
I bought into the M12 & M18 lineup for my company (thousands of Milwaukee tools) has to be back in 2009 or 2010 my first M12.
Every battery still works with every tool, nothing discontinued or released a new 36V or 60V lineup so now I need different batteries, tools, & chargers.
In the long run that saves money and time.
@@PowerScissor I ended up going with the M12 line and the bug bit me hard lol. I got great deals on my hammer drill/impact when I got it. A few months later though they brought out the Gen 3. I’m not too disappointed because I did get a hella deal starting out!

I see on the back wall you have several brands I am considering purchasing. For woodworking and small jobs around the house, M12, Ryobi, Kobalt 24v...? What to buy?! I do projects here n there on weekends. But I can’t help but wonder if I went with the M12, would I feel like I wasted $ and shuda got the 18v or 24v?!

Im bit late but the m12 system is a powerhouse I’d say go m12 I’m a diesel technician and use the m12 3/8 stubby and let me tell you its my favorite tool I have it’s just a monster and it don’t weight as much it’s compact fits into places that a mid torque won’t trust me when I tell you these m12 tools won’t fail and won’t disappoint you

I want the Surge but always out of stock and is like C$189. The regular fuel m12 is C$149 with a free 4.0 battery and charger.

In the second test u switched the fuel to setting 3 but u can see that when u use the surge it is still in setting 2. That's why it's so slow.
I do make mistakes here and there. ill take a look at it and see if I did make a mistake.
Putting the one screw in the wood with the regular impact then putting a screw right beside it with the surge, is not a fair test. The first screw compresses the wood in the area beside where your putting the next screw adding more resistance.
You should have used a DB meter for comparison. You could even use a phone app just to get a idea for the difference.

that is correct, but the regular version does seem to have more power

Crazy question. How do you tell the difference between surge and regular by just looking
it will say surge on the box usually
The surge will have a clear plastic cover on the tip of the drill
The front cover is rubbery and translucent and says "Surge" whereas the regular impact has a regular metal cover that says "M12". You can also check the side label to see which driver is which. The Surge is cat. no. 2551-20 while the standard impact is 2553-20.

Honestly you don't buy the surge for crazy long screws, I use mine for residential hvac install and it's perfect 👌
