What Is Nu-Metal? Knotfest Australia Responds

- Опубліковано 9 тра 2023
- Nu-metal is back, they say, but really, it never left. The real question is: What the hell is nu-metal anyway? Encompassing wide-ranging bands from Korn and Limp Bizkit to Slipknot and Mudvayne, and spanning from the mid-Nineties to the modern day, it's a hard genre to pin down. We traveled to Knotfest Australia to get the answer from fans and artists alike - including members of Parkway Drive, In Flames, Northlane, Alpha Wolf and Malevolence - and they did not disappoint.

To me, its about the level of aggression and emotion in the lyrics and the darkness of the music. The ability to make you connect on such a personal level that it hits you hard af. Bands like korn, Slipknot, mudvayne, coal chamber, and system of a down really saved me from super dark times and I'm so thankful for that. That's what Nu Metal is to me personally.
Im not saying you are wrong but you could say the same about previous metal genres. I think what makes nu metal great is how it added a more diverse influences to the existing metal music. Like it just seems so much more futuristic and complex than what came before.
Yeah and it's wrong lmao. Nu-metal is basically heavy metal combined with elements of hip-hop, rap, funk, grunge, techno, alt rock, etc. but more specifically hip-hop and rap.
That's why nu-metal is often associated baggy jeans, adidas overall, spiky hair or dreads, etc.
The riffs combined with the drums and vocals are structured to be groovy, bouncy, and jumpy- so much so that it's conducive to making listeners and band members alike to not just headbang, but stomp their feet, move around, and jump in the air.
Korn, early Linkin Park, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and early Deftones are lumped in as nu-metal despite having different sounds and themes is because they all give off a groovy jumpy vibe.
"Nu-Metal" got me into metal period. My first concert was KoRn "Follow The Leader" like 98 I was 14 and it KICKED ASS! I'm 39 and STILL LOVE KoRn! Also Australian's sound like FUN people! 🤘🤘
Hey rockers, hip hoppers, and everybody all around the world!
*Pagefire had the best summarization for NU Metal.*
For me, it’s the genre that has lots of catchy hooks, compared to other type of metal more accesible, radio-friendly and that is not a bad thing at all. It’s definitelly gateway to metal for many.
But there’s dark side to it too… serious lyrics about childhood trauma (looking at you Korn), bizzare band names with even more cursed meanings behind them (Limp Bizkit, Korn - have very gross origin story) or names that just sound cursed (Snot, Saliva..), it’s genre that has very broad spectrum of emotions and sounds. For every Nookie, there’s Daddy…
No one mentioned Deftones?
My thoughts exactly. They are one of the definitive bands of the genre.
I actually wasn’t never a big fan of theirs. I just remember their song Change- In the House of Flies which was the only song from them I liked lol. It was like most of the other nu-metal bands, imho, respectively.
No because they're actually good.
Grade 8 - Let Em know.
Shocore - Bonecracker.
2 bangers from the best genre
I loved early Korn, Deftones, and the first albums from Coal Chamber, Slipknot, System of a Down and Limp Bizkit. I had lost all interest in nu metal by 2000, as I started getting more interested in other metal subgenres, as well as punk and hardcore. I was a lot less aware of nu metal by the time Linkin Park blew up, along with the other 2000's bands. I can appreciate the "best of the best" nu metal stuff from the early days, but the sound and imagery of most nu metal just isn't my thing anymore. No hate though. Those early albums shaped my taste for heavier music and were real important to me as a 15 year old. It's kind of cool to see the genre having a bit of a resurgence in the last couple years.
FUCKIN YES!!! so good to see the love for nu metal!!!!
Korn, SLipknot and System Of A Down at least will go down in history along with mega names like Metallica for sure
Really glad Nu-Met'l is making it's way into the limelight for some reason today, whatever it is its always the right time to bring back this genre.
An angst driven jive built up on the dynamics of weighted groove and sorrow that managed to eventually and inevitably surface from the depths of the alternative music movement
Jumpy bouncy staccato riffs
Limp Bizkit is By far the best New Metal Band Live and on record 🫡
What about System of a Down Syndrome?
here comes finnn mckentys reaction video in 3,2,1...
It has rap type vocals, but the vocalist rawrs just as much of not more. The drums also have a hip hop style. I remember when how big it became in the mid to late 90’s and I was by far the biggest fan outta anyone I knew back then… actually to Hell with that lol, to this day and til I die. It was the first genre I knew was made for my generation. I graduated HS in ‘00, so yeah, all of HS for me was filled with Nu-Metal being blasted out of my green Dodge Caravan as I drove around my town taking bong hits and smoking blunts lol. My favorite time of being alive bar none. Back when every type of clothing was baggy as all Hell, 3x bigger than your frame lol, JeanCo was big for a hot minute, Hot Topic was in its infancy, printing out all the great bands tshirts and just a fantastic time to be alive really. I miss the late 90’s because I believe the 90’s was America’s greatest decade of all time. Before politics started getting in the way of everyday life. Movies were the best, sports were the best. It all just came to a peak in the mid to late 90’s and Nu-Metal being a part of it, how could you go wrong? 🤷🏻♂️🤘🏼🙏🏼
3/4 of these people got no idea what Nu-Metal is 😂
Nu metal is a Mixture of Hip Hop hardcore hip hop alternative hip hop Hip Hop rock Hip Hop metal industrial hip hop grunge punk rock groove metal progressive rock progressive metal funk metal thrash mixed
You all forgot switched from Cleveland chimaira flaw American head charge Kittie
Rage Founded Nu Metal
And if you wanna go back more, Faith No More
And Nine Inch Nails
Why do so many people keep lumping NIN in with the nu metal scene? NIN have absolutely nothing to do with nu metal.
Happy to see Nu metal getting the recognition it deserves today
even Motograter reformed again
nu metal definitely back
Nu metal will always be the pivotal ground breaking Genre that everybody loves to hate so here you go!🖕
Ehhm. It's dead already.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
And also they like Linkin Park? and why dosen't pit a image of Linkin Park?
I found Waldo
Jumpdafuckup music indeed!
Sepultura Roots king New Metal album
Sepultura is DEFINITELY NOT nu-metal!
@@swampcrypt Try telling that to Max Cavalera. Roots is a combination of Sepultura's original sound with traditional Brazillian music. It's not nu-metal, it's tribal AF. Just because you say it is, doesn't make it true.
Max cvalera Super Metal star bast band is soulfly
yup, new metal forever
only Nu-Metal fans know what nu-metal is😂
And also i hope fred will talk about russia invasion ukraine war
Good and bad in all Metal sub genres, so why limit yourself to just one. Disturbed and Lincon Park were after Slipknot, so Nu Metal never really totally died, as those bands survived. But all things run there course and Metal just has to keep evolving.
KoRn & Deftones playing up and down the CA valley started it all. Then came Slipknot... changed the genre. Mudvayne came after that
Limp Biscuit were terrible
It’s not really NU anymore lol it’s been 30 years I saw it coming in high school with Faith No More, Rage Etc. I like all kinds of genres so good music is good music and bad music is bad! People who exclusively listen to nothing but metal are the ones with problems with it which is pretty surprising 😂😂😂
If it's combining Synth, Electronica, Goth and Punk it's NOT Nu Metal, it's Industrial..far more akin to NIN, Ministry, Fear Factory, Skinny Puppy and even Joy Division...Deftones, Static-x and Coal Chamber are far more akin to The cure, Fields of the Nephelim, The Cult than Hip hop.
Don't get me wrong, some of the Hip hop groups were amazing..NWA, Public Enemy, Run DMC were definitely preaching inclusiveness, Racial harmony and Peace which are still valid causes. Rage Against The Machine are influenced by Hip hop Politics but are still more Punk than Rap...in conclusion all music has the power to unite us no matter what Race we are...Were all the same under the skin...Blood Red...
Особого восторга у меня некогда не было, по поводу данного жанра музыки. Не моё.
I know what nu isn't ....metal :P
Hey i don't like knotfest ok? i prefered other music festival
It’s metal without guitar solos.
Its metal where the guitarist couldn't play a solo to save their careers
@@MCLOATHlN Solos don’t make a song though
@@northtimo666 yet, solos are a lot better than 2 rhythm guitars going 01001010010011011.......2
@@northtimo666 the scene died after 5 years for a reason bruh
@@swampcrypt slipknot isn't really nu metal tbh more alternative
korn got roped in, because they fit the mold. not originaly nu metal
i think if Nu-metal came back so should 2k actors intermingled with todays actors, share the spotlight!
"metal" for people who hate metal, like metalcore and deathcore
RATM and FNM never get enough credit for ACTUALLY starting nu metal. “Limp Bizkit”🤡
ESPECIALLY FNM 🔥🔥🔥
Nu metal isn’t metal
