- Should non-metalheads wear metal shirts? It's a debate as old as the genre itself, and one that gets rehashed every time a normie celebrity like Aubrey Plaza or Zara Larsson pops up rocking a metal tee. Do people need to prove their headbanging bona fides before they can throw on a Slayer shirt? Can people just wear something for the design, even if they don't know the music? We asked bigwig metal and rock musicians - including members of Spiritbox, GWAR, Bring Me the Horizon, In Flames and more - to weigh in on this hot-button topic. It only bothers me if it's like when Kendall Jenner wore a Slayer shirt, but she also tweets about how she can't stand the music or people who listen to it. If you wear the merch but bash the genre/fans at the same time, THAT is like slapping me in the face with one hand while flipping me off with the other. Granted, it also makes them look like a clown.
Yeah that's annoying and also when people pretend to like the music of the band's t-shirt they're wearing but other than that I don't care, people can wear what the fuck they want plus it's free advertising for the band

I personally don't care. But it's always a bit weird/awkward when you strike up a conversation with someone over the band t shirt they're wearing and they look at you with a blank face 😄

I had a customer with Iron Maiden tee and myself not a huge fan of them I felt disappointed coz he didn’t know anything about the band.

I would never wear a shirt from a band I don’t listen to but that’s just me. Wear what you want and I wear what I want. The best part about people wearing metal shirts for fashion is that those shirts will end up at the thrift stores for a few dollars and I will buy every single one to add to the collection I already have. 🤘

@@Warchiefdyingheart that is the world of retail. Once you purchase a item, the band has no say in what you do with said item. There is a instance where they do have a say and that is counterfeit goods obviously the bands make no money off theses items which sucks. I would prefer to see band merch. In a thrift store being sold for a good cause then see it in a landfill somewhere.
Dave Mustaine had a funny story where he was in Europe walking around and some young girl who didn't speak English had a Megadeth tshirt on. Dave approaches trying to say "hey nice shirt...thats my band" pointing to the shirt and she basically called him a creep and walked away. 🤣😂

Yeah, I mean, I found out about Pierce the Veil (one of my favorite bands and yes, I know they aren't Metal) when I saw someone wearing one of their shirts in school.
the only thing is some people don't even know that these are bands, i've had a few people tell me they taught iron maiden was a ''cool brand''
@@damienroy5242 bands ARE brands. Most people either don't realize or choose to ignore that a band is a business. You are pushing your product out and at the end of the day, the more people buy your brand product, the more money goes into your pocket.

No, at school I was one of maybe 3 metal heads in the whole school. We would get bullied and picked on for our choice in music and tshirts. Then after we leave school the same people that bullied the shit out of me for my t-shirts, wear those shirts for fashion.

Funny, but true story:
When in middle school, I was (am) a Metalhead. I was picked on and bullied for being a smaller guy.
High school came around and I got a growth spurt. Those same bullies, now smaller than me, were kissing my ass because now, I was the big kid on the block and it didn't help them that I looked pissed off about it to them.
You've never seen a faster change of attitude before. It was hilarious.
You're supposed to single or double leg-grab bullies and reign down some elbows; problem solved.

For the record, a person wearing metal shirts but not knowing metal can result in exactly what happened to Zara Larsson, who wore a skirt thing with the Filosofem album cover on it and got huge backlash.
A lot of goths nowadays don't really like goth music, only the fashion. It's a huge point of discussion for us as well.
Yeah, those are not goths as well. What happened with the goth subculture is the exact example why its a problem people try to make metal t-shirts into a trendy fashion
First world problems: Gate keeping
As a goth (one who likes the music and horror) I feel that it has evolved but I also feel that people have mixed goth and emo up. Emo came about as more of a fashion and was centered around an aesthetic. A lot of new "goths" are actually more what I'd consider emo or just alternative in general. I think people forget that there are different types of categories to being alternative and some of them appear very similar. Take Gothic Lolita for example. While this is a Gothic style it doesn't revolve around the music and falls more into the Lolita lifestyle. Most people just don't look too deep into things nowadays. If they want to call themselves goth but don't listen to the music I let them but I know that they are probably more alternative or emo technically. Since they're not hurting anyone I feel no need to correct them. I didn't fully learn what goth was until I was in college so I like to give people time. There are a lot of great goth content creators out there that help educate young goths about the culture. I just let people take things one day at a time.

Gatekeeping is when someone pretend he is better and you are a poser unless you align with his really specific and obscure checklist that basically no one align with, or pretend you are a poser if you like anything else not part of the subculture despite being part of said subculture. Its not gatekeeping to point out you are not part of a subculture when you literally not listen to/actively dislike the music of said music based subculture. I'm not a gangsta rapper even if I put on some baggy clothes and a dollar necklace because I don't listen to rap. Really easy.

My biggest issue with it is when I try to start a conversation about the band thinking I might make a friend and they want nothing to do with me 😅
I've had some pretty cool conversations starting with me complimenting t-shirts and talking about bands I like. It makes me feel good when I connect with my fellow people and find common interests.

I stopped complimenting peoples shirts in public because 98% of the time they have no clue what I’m talking about, and I end up embarrassing myself.

that happened to me at a pub once. Saw a dude with an outfit I thought was sick and went to say hi. Turns out he didn't know what slayer was
bar hopped to another pub and met this women in a corporate outfit with her partner who was in one of those Apple genius uniforms, and they were going to a metal festival later than month

for me, as a British woman in my mid forties - I had to go through some real shit dressing as a Metalhead/Goth from my early teens.
I literally got bricks thrown at my head once (in the North of the UK) for being "The Rock Bitch" (thats what I was called by the local non British men).
So I'm both happy to see people feeling free to wear stuff I literally helped pave the way for...but also gutted that its sold in such souless corporate holes like Big W and Kmart.
I will never buy my metal shirts from there, I would rather pay 4 times the amount and buy them direct from the band or from a licensed merch store.
Thank you very much for paving the way! I'm also old enough to remember metal being a specific subculture, so I get the fact that some people want to retain the cosy atmosphere, but personally I like that it's more acceptable and accessible to people now. It's nice that people don't get bullied for it anymore, you know?!
An experience shared there. Mid-forties, North East England. First assaulted aged 14 in 1990 by a group of 18 year olds - who I knew - and beaten up another 10 or so times in the next 15 years - including by a gang of 20+ yobs in 2003 that left me in hospital and off work recovering for 6+months, had my house attacked a number of times too. All for having long hair and wearing metal t-shirts. Much as it had an effect on me, I haven't changed. When I see non-metalheads wearing t-shirts it makes me pretty angry. Even though it's many years later I have four sons into metal, and they've gone through some similar (thankfully not as violent) situations with people whose musical tastes err towards some of 'personalities' in the thumbnail.
Mind you, it was usually more along the line of 'Sweaty C**t' or homophobic slurs when it came to verbal (which was a daily thing until I moved out of the wonderful town of Washington about a decade ago....

Personally I would never wear a band shirt of a group I’m not into.
But, It’s not just the music that makes Metal cool. It’s also the image of rebellion that everyone wants to be a part of. I see people wearing Suicidal Tendencies hats and they don’t even know ST is a band! Same with people wearing NY Yankees ball caps that don’t even like baseball.
Wear whatever you feel like represents you as a person.
The Misfits, The Ramones and Black Flag t-shirts (and tattoos) are everywhere! I only wish the music was as popular the image.

Yeah I was thinking it kinda depends on the shirt ..! Some bands have oversaturated the t-shirt market and have such recognizable aesthetics I wouldn't be surprised if some young kids were wearing Metallica or Iron Maiden just for the look

Courtney nailed it. I’ve gotten comments my whole life too with weird stuff like “so do you actually listen to the band or do you just respect them”, like what kind of question is that lol?? I weirdly only stopped getting these kinds of comments since I got visible tattoos because beforehand I must have looked ‘too normal’ to listen to metal?

I grew up in the 70's. I loved the band KISS. I still do if I'm honest. The other day I saw a teenager wearing a vintage KISS shirt... My first thought was... 'Man it is so cool that kids are still listening to my favorite bands!'... but then I had the thought... 'maybe the kid just likes the shirt and never even heard a KISS song before...'
As I walked by him, I decided to simply say 'Cool shirt!'.
He said 'thanks'.
One day I wore my Mastodon shirt on the train and some older clearly metalhead dude walked towards the exit and as he passed by me and looked at my shirt he just said "awesome band". It was just such a genuinely nice thing to happen. Really made my day so thank you for being nice to a stranger!

I grew up listening to my dad’s Pink Floyd albums and I have those same thoughts.
I doubt this is more than a fabricated comment. But assuming it's true... You have literally picked the most corporate, shallow, merchandise over music example of a band. I get you like it. But KISS is already more of a brand than a band anyway.
I like seeing metal shirts in places like Walmart and Target because it helps normalize the genre. It's harder to say "All metalheads are evil!" when you can literally buy it at the store along with polo shirts and slacks. You don't have to know all of the classic Renaissance paintings to decide to put up a print of the Mona Lisa on your wall.
I mean we are pretty far removed from the Satanic Panic. The only people who still judge me by my appearance are only making it easier for me to weed them out from having me waste my time on them.
I hate seeing comic book and metal gear and that stuff at walmart because it only proves all these things are being co opted by a generation whose identities have been hodge lodged together by their parents and that they have nothing to rebel against. Here kid listen to Metallica and smoke weed, we wouldn't want to have an uncool kid...
I loved my first metal shirts because I had to save up for them and sneak away to a head shop to buy them because my parents wouldn't.

Now he's a lifer. I never miss a chance to remind him that the first time he heard death metal he gave an old mans response.

I fully agree, on one hand it doesn't bother me because people can wear whatever they want. But on the other side, if I'm looking for people who share my music tastes and someone's wearing a band shirt of one of my favorite bands, it's frustrating when they don't know who the band is or just like the design as if it was something trendy.

As the guys from Bloodywood said, if you like the artwork and have never taken the time to check their music, you can still appreciate parts of the artistic vision, and i'm down with that. Maybe one day you'll take the time to put on their record.
That's how I got into Cannibal Corpse. I first saw their artwork in a headbanger's journey and was like damn this is fucking ridiculous, i need to check them out.

Funny story: Jayant from Bloodywood was walking around the site of a Belgian festival we were at, after their show. We love Bloodywood so we complimented him and got into a conversation. He said he had just walked around the site and saw a dude with a Bloodywood shirt and told the guy he was wearing a cool shirt. The guy was like "Yeah, they're amazing, just saw their show, do you know them?". Jayant said "No, not really" and the guy said "You should man". He was laughing his ass off and we loved this story and moment. He had to run to tell the bandmates, "I have to tell them, they will piss their pants" 😂

Whats funny is I get the inverse happening to me a lot now. I dont wear the shirts anymore and look pretty "normal" and people think I must not be into death or black metal. It's pretty weird especially after years of getting shit for looking metal growing up
There’s a difference between a kid/teenager wearing a metal T-shirt compared to some “celebrity”. For me, heavy music helped get through some tough times. Some of those times caused by mainstream people. So to see those kind of people then wear the merch of those bands that helped me because it apparently now fashionable, pisses me off.
My opinion is that people can wear whatever the hell they want to wear. If I want to wear a Britney Spears T-Shirt or a ballet dress then I'll wear it.

Personally I do agree with these people promoting the bands whose merch they are wearing and how that aspect of it is beneficial to the band, but I kinda disagree with what you said because you can totally pay attention to 1 minor issue and 1 or 2 big issues at the same time and balance out the amount of time and attention you give them, just because somebody is talking about Kim Kardashian wearing a Slayer shirt that doesn't mean that they don't also take time to talk about more important issues like improving a country's laws, politics, improving the lives of the LGBTQ community, reducing air pollution and so on, and so forth.

I think you should at least like that band, even if it’s just a couple albums, but you shouldn’t be expected to get an A+ when someone comes up and starts quizzing you on obscure band trivia.

I think alot of people who love hardcore rock, metal, punk etc was a scene built on the nobody's and the ignored... Disenfranchised etc... For people who wear it outside the scene is a bit frustrating... They didn't get the shit kicked out of them or bullied at school for loving that genre and that music. I've seen so many "bullies" wearing the shirts, the merch with no knowledge and it's very hard to accept that being someone who had a hard time for liking music older than me or different. It's bullshit. Fuck the posers.
This is the side of the argument people should be aware of too. The metal community is trying way too hard to be peace love and acceptance instead of standing its ground as being what they always been. We need to stop appealing to the crowd that doesn't even actually care about us, like us, or our music. I like a lot of metal, but I listen to whatever I want, metal or not, that side I'm all about open-mindedness, but I think this isn't so black and white. If you take issue with this, sure, that's fine. And I agree to an extent. Just don't make it a public spectacle.

It also goes the other way around. I don't have any tattoos, or piercings, I wear white, blue, or even pink t-shirts and a lot of rockers don't take me seriously. But I love their faces when they see me singing Trivium or Six Feet Under
if they bought a shirt, they supported the artist. SHOULD they listen to them? no reason not to check them out with streaming services now. But at the end of the day, they supported the band, they're literally exposing more people to the artist, and if they think the name or logo or art is cool, that's still PART of liking the artist, just one facet of the that artist. People also forget that the art is usually done by other artists and not the musicians themselves, in MOST cases, so buy buying and wearing a shirt they are in tandem also supporting those artists as well, I do wish that came up a lot more in the conversation. But at the end of the day who gives a shit? If you give a shit, you're one part of the many issues that hardcore and metal culture already has. Why make it even harder for others to join in?

I doubt many of these people have any interest in "joining"! It's done as a trend or for shock value. But you're right in that they're supporting the art, which then supports the band. They're also giving the band some publicity. Even if they don't realize they're doing this! Maybe we are too defensive about "our" music 😂

As some who use to work at target seeing gen z kids in Thrasher hoodies and Slipknot shirts always bugged me because they obviously had no idea what it was. Except on the odd occasion I'd be on lunch outside with my jbl speaker playing music and some people would actually come up to me and actually know who was playing between Jinjer or Slaughter to Prevail and it made me feel more inclined to get more people into metal because metal is awesome. People can wear what they want but when you put on a band tee or a team (pro or college) tee you are expected to know at least one song or pull for the team vs. it looks cool.
I wear the sports stuff.. but I don't care about the team 🤣 I just like the design on the cap. Someone trying talk to me about some player. I asked is he a football player? The guy said baseball.

It's simple - all you have to do to wear a band's shirt is like their music.
If I see somebody wearing ym favorite band's shirt, and I ask them what their favorite song by that band is - I don't care if they say something new, old, obscure, their biggest hit, a cover they recorded... as long as they can tell me the name of a song they like that the band did, I'm happy
My husband wears one band shirt that he can't name a single song from. He bought it at the concert and loves several of their songs, just doesn't know the name of them. He's not a rock/metal geek like me. I can usually list all the band members names, album names, etc.. I try to warn him that he's going to end up on one of those YT videos where they ask you to name 3 songs from the band shirt your representing!! 🤣🤣

i think gatekeeper mentality and metal elitist culture is toxic but metal heads are very entitled to frowning upon people who wear band tees and give metal culture no importance and the band no recognition.

I think the exception I make is if it’s a band you see live, but you haven’t necessarily listened to a ton of their music. Like my fiancée bought a hardcore punk band’s T-Shirt just because she wanted to support one of the bands and thought the design was dope.
Wearing something just because it "looks cool" is just so superficial and shallow, completely representative of how narcissistic and devoid of substance our society has become. And these artists saying its alright just want to cash in on selling the licensing rights of their logo. 🙄

I've been a metal fan for over 45 years. I was there when NWOBHM first started in the late 70's & early 80's and I've been a die-hard metalhead ever since. I literally couldn't care less who wears metal shirts. Who am I to dictate what other people wear?

i will say this. I saw a teenage girl with a Judas Priest shirt on. She didnt know anything about the band, but the artist who did the album cover art though and is a huge fan of Claudio Bergamín"s art, right down to his Scifi/fantasy artwork. She or anyone should be able to wear what they want because of whatever!!

How does the music and the merch correlate at all besides the fact that it belongs to a metal band ? I mean sure, they have some form of relation, in terms of the logo being written with brutal letters, hence the heaviness of the band but these two don't go side by side. Some bands have amazing artworks, aliens, demons etc, and some have sick logos, with the letters distorted and such. Why is it so weird to like such things but not like metal. Like you could even like metal but not like that band specifically. Cant someone like The Guy from Disturbed while not liking their music, or can't someone who doesn't listen to metal look at their mascot and think " hey that is a fucking cool character" ? I don't get why clothing can be such a gatekeeping subject in this community. Clothes can look awesome, especially ones that have unique designs and mascots, which metal has plenty of.

I was heavily abused and bullied in high school by my fellow students for listening to metal and wearing band shirts. I usually don't care what people wear but teens are such hypocrites. Know the band.
It is so true that the designs are awesome. I dunno how many times i've found band tees in shops that looked really cool but i didn't buy because of the fact that i don't listen to them, even if i know what they are or heard some stuff. But i do think it's a bit strange when people wear stuff like that having NO CLUE or connection to the scene. That's probably why i can't bring myself to buy stuff with designs of the bands i don't listen to. but at the same time i don't really have any band t-shirts in general, cuz they are impossible to find here and the bands never really come. Ordering the stuff online is so expensive, especially when you need to do it from outside the Europe. So yeah, even with that, i'd rather wear none, than wear stuff of the bands i don't listen to lol

These shirts are not brand names, they represent art that is almost exclusively consumed by people who are enthusiasts.
For me, I dont wear a shirt that doesn't say "this is something that means something to me." When I see someone who just wears generic shit I feel like they must not want much from their entertainment.
Your comment made me laugh because I recently asked a woman I work with what her hobbies were. She said she likes to read and so I asked what authors. She said "oh, I like all kinda of stuff." I asked her favorite bands, she said "I like everything." I was like okay, I'll just stop talking to you then...
it's really not the same, because one is visual art and the other isn't. It's fine to buy a shirt just because you really like the album art or the design on it. And chances are, if you're drawn to the visual art, eventually you might realize you like the musical art too. If you're gonna use the book analogy, it's more like someone buying a book because they're really drawn to the cover. May not even turn it over to read the synopsis. Is it how most people buy books? No, but that's ok! They might have that book sitting around and they love looking at the cover, then one day they finally sit down to read it and realize they like the book as much as the cover. And if they never sit down to read it, they still have a visual piece of art that brings them joy.

Also, I never said they were disconnected. In fact my whole point was that connection with one aspect of the art often leads to connection with the art as a whole. Such as the visual art on a band shirt, and the band's music. Or the art on the cover of a book, and the contents of that book. You missed the whole point of what I was saying. If you scroll through the comments, you'll see a lot of people saying this is the exact way they got into metal. Bought a cool shirt, ended up falling in love with the music some time later. It's ok to wear a shirt because you like the art on it. That's someone connecting with an aspect of that artist's expression. It's actually really cool, not something negative. Loving the art on a piece of clothing is a great reason to buy it. I cannot imagine being so defensive/judgmental over something so neutral and inconsequential, but I'll leave you to it. Be well!

Back in the day, I went to the store to look for new bands and albums and decided what to test out due to the cover artwork OR because I saw somebody in a particular metal shirt and I found that interesting.

This is how I discovered Death - I dug the artwork to Scream Bloody Gore so picked it up, and on the back it had a song called Evil Dead (which is my favourite movie) and that was IT - I HAD to have that record,
Got it home and it blew me away.

Ain't nothing more embarrassing than being asked what your favorite song is by the band on your t shirt and you don't even know it's a band. I've stopped wearing band tees because me being the introvert that I am, i was tired of all the random people coming up to me and complementing my shirts and what not lol. Yea, I know I'm weird.
I disagree with none metalheads wearing metal shirts, as it really annoys me when I see someone wearing my favorite bands shirt and then when I try engaging with them about the band, it turns out that they are completely clueless, and know jack shit about what I'm talking about. Leave the metal shirts to the metal heads. Because that's one of the ways we communicate with one another. Same as with any other genre of music, or sports even.

It's a two way street really. On one hand, only fans should be wearing stuff they are actually fans of. It's not a fashion statement, it's supporting the bands you like (think of sports fans wearing their teams stuff, and then someone that doesn't watch, support, or even care also wearing the teams stuff). On the other, if it's spreading word of the band to others that wouldn't normally have known about them, then that's good.

I'll be honest, it's kind of complicated for me.
First off, I honestly don't care what people wear, especially if they think it looks cool (and let's be real, most metal shirts as super badass). Even as a metalhead, it happened to me, I got a Murderdolls hoodie from my cousin and had no idea it was a band until someone told me so (she just got through her edgy phase and I got all of her old stuff, I just figured it was something edgy, still feel super lucky because I never had that much money and her phase got me so many awesome clothes).
The one thing that bothers me is that it can make it harder to recognize a metal head in the wild, especially since the whole edgy/punk/metal head aesthetic has gotten more popular. But in all realness, for me it's more about that a lot of subcultures have been downsizes into just an aesthetic to the mainstream. But my annoyance isn't really with the people wearing it, more the companies that did this. To add, the bands I'm into will probably never be sold mass wide, so when I see someone wearing a band shirt I know, it's highly likely they're into the music. And if they're not, well, let me introduce them to some great music.
(also, yeah, it can be weird to have been bullied a lot for how you dressed, only to see the same people wearing the same aesthetic years later and not acknowledge that they did bully people for the same look).
What I find a more interesting question, as a metal head, what if a band has the most awesome design and you want it, but you have absolutely nothing with the music, would you buy it?
yes and i think when people say they don't know the band you should tell them about it and who knows maybe they will actually like it and get invested in the genre
I started off in the 90's being a young teenager as a Grunge kid. I wish we had all those cool tshirts. Maybe I would have gotten into metal earlier. I don't know. Anyway, it makes me happy when I see metal shirts in mainstream stores. Metal graphic design is awesome.

Not caring about fashion is just a byproduct of me being a "metalhead" after all these years. But I personally only wear shirts from bands I've experienced live. I earned it you know!? Remember,a band shirt is an invitation for conversation. If you're wearing a shirt I might think we have something in common? And try to speak with you. Because we're friendly, only to find out you know nothing of the advertisement on your front or back.

Alas, my favorite bands are usually not found (it just so happens that I love japanese music), so I just choose from what is presented in the store, since I still love the genres in which these bands play.
At 9:26 I got so excited because they had a Kittie shirt on! I love seeing metal bands on shirts, and it doesn’t matter to me if they know the band or not because it’s not like I have the confidence to ask lol. And I’ve found a lot of bands by seeing their shirt and liking it, looking up the music afterward and falling in love with the music even more
I agree with Courtney. People love to single women out especially for wearing metal shirts. I understand some men like to flatter themselves to think we do it to attract them. I don't date metal dudes actually and as someone who's listened to metal for over 20 years, I certainly don't look metal either. I only wear band tees from my favorite bands so if someone tries me (which is always a male, BTW). I can say "from which album do you want me name songs from?" So they STFU and regret asking me in the first place. Metal is also having that attitude that's aggressive when provoked. It's the only thing metal about me besides my music taste.

@Michael Lochlann I agree it's mostly the entry level posers who ask rudely anyway. If someone asked me about my shirt, what's your favorite song and why? I would have a conversation with them. But someone asked me to name pink floyd songs after seeing me in my Wish you were here shirt and it really pissed me off. I love classic rock, that was my gateway into metal.

While some artists and people view it as “gatekeeping” or in terms of free advertisement, many fans view the subject differently. The metal community often feels ostracized so when we see someone wearing band merch or metal accessories, we see someone who we can connect with or at-least share a brief conversation with. When we approach these people and start up a conversation there maybe a moment of disappointment and disapproval because that potential connection is lost. In the past, when I saw someone wearing a metal shirt I could reasonably expect to have a good conversation or even a new friend. This was important as there were few metalheads in my area. Now, its the opposite. People seem confused or offended that I ask them about their shirts or whatever. Most of them didnt realize it was an actual band, lol. However, I dont care what people wear. Less gatekeeping the better, imo.

I won't get a shirt unless I know at least 3 songs, my ONLY exception is if it's an opening band I don't know but they're really good, so I go get a shirt at merch without know their music

I only wear band shirts that I bought at the concert when seeing that band!! When we wear band shirts, it opens dialog and you meet people who are into what you are. If I approach a guy at a concert with a Dream Theater fan, I expect to be able to talk to that person about the band or band within that genre. If you're 20 and wear a Metallica shirt because you think it's a clothing brand and not a band, you're done!!
It's true that some people wear the shirts just for the cool artwork etc. for the fashion but don't listen to the band which is fine and good advertising but be ready to admit it if someone asks if you saw the tour or have favorite songs or albums. Concert shirts are a great way to strike up conversations in public.
I come from alot of different cultures and influences listen to all kinds of music but my favorite genre is metal but going off my appearance it looks like I wouldn’t know a thing about metal that I just bought a band tee to go with my outfit or sneakers so I’m just waiting for the day for someone to get in my face so I can name off full albums, the year those albums came out and all the members in the band 😂
celebutante by megadeth is my favorite answer to this question. Dave mustaine came across a girl wearing megadeth merch and said "hey that's my band" and she freaked out and told him to go away because he looked like an old creep. Of course she had no clue that megadeth was a band and wanted nothing to do with them.

Honestly on a personal level it does break my heart when people aren't fans of what they're wearing because it's one less convo you can have with someone, but on the flip side I totally get it too cuz I love an awesome shirt design. But if we're all being honest with ourselves, we all want exposure to the stuff we love anyways so if someone is walking around billboarding Slayer at a Best Buy then that may in return inspire some kid to check out Slayer and become a fan. As they say, no publicity is bad publicity.
The first rock song that I remember liking was Dream On at the age of 7!! But I think my first rock or metal band T-shirt was either AC/DC or Rage Against the Machine!! I do remember my sisters going to a Van Halen concert when I was young and they gave me their shirt cuz I liked them myself! If I got a T-shirt of the first bands I really liked it would be Foreigner, Chicago, Styx or Huey Lewis and the News!! LOL
There was a time when I was in middle school where people would wear, like, auto parts shirts... like, I know that middle schooler ain't buying oil filters and shit 😂 That being said, I lost some band shirts to ex boyfriends and things over time, thinking I'd just replace them one day.... at these prices, yeah, not gonna happen.
I’ve gotten the stereotyped “you aren’t a metal fan” because people think metal fans have to look a certain way. I was the quiet shy nerd in school. I hung out with the kids that were NKotB fans. I’ve been a fan of metal since about 10 years old. It’s my number one favourite genres. As an adult I still get shocked looks when I say I’m going Slipknot concert. Just because I look like a banker, doesn’t mean I can’t be a fan.

A tshirt is an expression of what you like, what youre into and sometimes maybe what youre like as a person. If you wear a band tshirt because you really like the band, youre saying "I like this band and I listen to them alot." If you wear it for fashion then youre saying "I follow trends to look cool." I wear tshirts from gigs to say "I was there and it was awesome."

I only wear t-shirts from the bands I really love and the more obscure, the better. I would never wear a shirt for a band that I didn't love but if other people do it, it's no skin off my nose but I might give them a bit of an eyeroll.
I've been a metalhead for most of 35 years (started around 13yo) and I even wear non-metal shirts like Michael Jackson, Selena Quintilla, Bjork, etc. and I can't tell you how many times I get compliments about em when I play gigs or go to rock/metal shows in general.
Aside from doing your homework to get insight on the bands merchandise you're wearing, who needs anymore fuckin gatekeepers in our realm?! You do you! Wear that shit with pride! 🤘

Who cares what a person wears? How do you know what that person listens to anyway? Maybe they listen to the band. Maybe they don't. Stop judging people on what they wear or how they look. Maybe that would actually grow the scene instead of turning more people away.
I know this incessant gatekeeping is turning me away, at least. I've always been curious about metal, but i gave up trying to explore the genre because whenever i find something i enjoy i'm told it's not metal enough, or i'm not enough of a fan. I wouldn't dare buy a t shirt from anything other than my absolute favorite bands, for fear of gatekeepers. Kind of ridiculous to let other people dictate my clothing in this way but here we are. It's more hassle than it's worth at this point

I was lucky enough to find a community pretty close that was awesome but that was over a decade ago and I was already into the music. I don't think I would have had the experience I did if those people weren't around. If I had had to try and find a community online, it would have probably been awful. Nearly every shirt I own is a band tee! I really don't care if people listen to the bands on the shirts they wear, HOWEVER it could always be a fun conversation starter!
I agree if you wear it cause you started to hear the band or just got in to it because from there other people will give you other options of bands that sound similar , that’s what happened with me when I encountered someone saw my shirt and have like a 5 min talk with a stranger lol .What bothers me is just they use it as fashion because you want to have a conversation about the band and you could see the face almost saying yeah I just bought the shirt and know nothing about the band lol. Bands are struggling to survive these days and are always counting on touring and MERCH to put food on the table. If some “poser” is wearing a t shirt and doesn’t know a single song by said band, that’s still money in their pockets. Someone will notice the tee (like I have) and do some research and may become a huge fan.
Just know it’s a band. Someone once had a converge shirt one because they thought it was a mma clothing band. I don’t care if you like the band or not.
And I just want you to know that it’s a band in the same way that I don’t want to wear just any brand without knowing what it is. I don’t wanna wear a Texaco gasoline shirt.
