Yup, Pen rods have been around for some time. They're actually pretty cool and practical. And they're super cheap also. Also there is the notion they're fragile and that is not the case at all. They're very robust. they're not a full blown rod of course, but they're a lot of fun. Great video.
I bought one of these several years ago, I ended up changing the reel for something similar size but several times stronger largest catch on this rod so far is 18lb 4oz Mirror Carp
not a bad rod to play with, would highly recommend changing the reel for something a little bigger as after a few fish to tends to slip a fair bit. but rod not a problem still use it to this day.
i used one of these as my first ultralight rod(well, a slightly older higher-quality version), it lasted almost 5 years before i felt it was time to get something better. now i use a ABU garcia UL combo rod with a shimano sienna 500FD. but i still keep the pen rod in my school bag, for when i happen to come by a good fishing spot.
Fair play to you, there are a bunch of us already having a penn rod challenge, with a local Plymouth tackle shop donating some prizes, so far we have had the wrasse challenge, last month it was the species count and this Sunday is the Gnome challenge....Biggest fish I have heard landed was a 13lb carp.....:) They are great fun! Beware though, my reel broke as i unwraped it so its now held on with gaffer tape...:) Most of us have added new braid to the reels....
Nice stuff. I have the same one but haven't used it ever. i had left it packed until I saw your video. I will take it for a spin when I go fishing next time. Probably will be good for catching bait fish on bobber.
This is the first time watching your videos and I like them because your not like some of the others and you actually say the good thing about it.and not put it down
One thing to keep in mind is these come in longer lengths all the videos I've seen are of the 1 meter rod but they come in 1.4 meter 1.6 meter and even a couple over 2 meters , I ordered one on the 1 meter rods and my girlfriend loved it so much I thought I would buy her one but to my pleasant surprise I got the 1.4 meter rod . It's great and nicely supple .
its actually alot of fun using lighter tackle, every fish feels like a monster! currently use a quantum magic perch 2.1m rod for pretty much everything, with a 1000 series reel and 11kg green braid.
these rods are awesome for using on small creeks. ive caught some bass nearly the length of my arm with one of these (exact same rod). I think i put 6lb line on mine to get a longer cast with lighter rooster tails.
That was pretty cool, I had thought about getting one to carry around in the truck. Since I fish salt water I would opt with getting a Penn reel for my Pen rod. lol.
Love my carp fishing. I'm just on the outskirts of Sydney. Last year was a bumper year with over 60 fish caught. This year has been pitiful with only 3 all year. Caught my first full scale mirror last year in a local creek.
hey guys just got this pen hahah , just wanted to have some fun , do you think i can nail a fish with some small jigs and some small lures? and how about like a 20G bottom fishing ?
Be good to keep one in the bag with a controller on incase you see a few surfacing. Sometimes you just can't be bothered to de rig and re rig your main rod. Awesome guys!
I found they work great, but thought that if I wanted a better rod to leave in the car for a quick blast I should look at a good telescopic and found the Maver spin rod to be awesome, especially coupled with the Daiwa Ninja 1500 reel, packed with both braid and nylon. Awesome video as always guys!
Another awesome video. I have one of those rod and reels. Iv only ever thought it would be ok for roach. I think im going to have to try stepping up. Im feeling a drop shotting adventure! 🎣 Tight lines.
Looks good to me, I got The NGT 6 piece travel rod for a laff expecting to snap it 1st time out and was then going to rip it on social media...but it never let me down and I was using it today smashing roach wiv me bird . Love good cheep gear to play with.
Just goes to prove you don't need mega expensive tackle to catch some quality fish . I've got a challenge for you , take that pen rod out on your boat and target some tope and smooth hound .
i have bought so many of theese, stopped using them tho, i loved them. so easily transportable and actually fishes really well. biggest fish ive caught on a pen rod was an 8kg pike (in the winter tho, so not so hard fighting) - actually think it is an world record
have a waist pack to pack all your fishing gear in and have a hook and weight in the pen cap, you've got a nice compact fishing system, a kid could have his fishing kit to use on the way home from school with a small can or jar of corn or dough bait or rummage a worm from some rocks laying around the river bank or lake/pond side.
hi im from chipping norton i had one of the pen rods it was really good for lrf i had it for 1 year and snapped it 2 weeks ago i had a fish tried to set the hook and it snapped
Great fun guys what a laugh that was. Am i right that there are hooks with a sort of spring on them to help with holding paste or paste like baits around the hook? I have used some for cat fish in the Ozarks but they were trebles which i am not particularly fond of.
Never used them but recall seeing someone with them.I just make the paste a bit stiffer and don't have too many problems with it.But we are fishing paste at close range or just a couple of rod lengths out.
Cant believe how much you two sound alike lol iv only ever watched videos of Graeme so when I watched this video I couldn't believe it lol what's the casting weight of this rod please chaps? Great video, I'm going to give it a go :)
those rods actually aren't that bad! the reels and the line tho... but you got that already^^ nice video again, gotta get one myself again. for trout tho
Fantastic channel this ! just goes to show you dont need all these expensive tackle to catch nice fish and expensive bait , keep up the good work lads (go for a catfish next lol )
Very nice to watch Mike and his father both of whom engage with the camera very well. Top tips and advice from these experts. I wanna buy a fixed spool pen rod to put in the backpack and cycle along the river looking for rising fish. Perhaps it is better to backwind rather than rely on a sticky drag mechanism. Thanks for sharing your adventures & best wishes for 2017
Fancy buying one of Amazon Mike where's the one your Dad was giving you from his freebies, sorry if you purchased this one before your dad got his lol; keep the challenges and the videos coming.
ANJAY CHANNEL you'd be surprised how strong the ones are on the pen fishing rod page! lol, looks similar but I've caught huge carps on em! lol try it out and check out the page! I'm sure the ones on the page penfishing rods are a lot better, look it up on google. been a while since I been on the page
Hello from America. I use canned mackerel mixed with flour for my paste for catfishing with great success. The oils disperse perfectly in the water. I do have one question...when you say you caught a fish in the margins what do you mean by the margins? Ive never heard that phrase in fishing before. Thank you.
Would it be good for me to take to school so when im walking home i can go to the river for about an hour theres only uk brown trout and i saw a golden trout there to
The reel on your pen rod looks quite more substantial than reels I have seen on other Pen rod reviews here on YT.
Thanks for the neat review.
out a doubt this has been one of the most enjoyable videos I seen in a while on the tafishing show. I hope there are more videos like this coming 👌
Yup, Pen rods have been around for some time.

they're not a full blown rod of course, but they're a lot of fun.
Great video.
Such good fun.Great vid.Thanks fellas.
I love this fishery in yatley, fished the same swim a few weekends back
I bought one of these several years ago, I ended up changing the reel for something similar size but several times stronger largest catch on this rod so far is 18lb 4oz Mirror Carp
Duo Maxwell that's great I just got one how good are they
not a bad rod to play with, would highly recommend changing the reel for something a little bigger as after a few fish to tends to slip a fair bit. but rod not a problem still use it to this day.
What size reel mate and we're can I get one from cheers
i got the FLADEN WARBIRD 220 from amazon for £28.99 and like i said i've caught an 18lb mirror using this reel so i know it works fine.
can you cast with that multiplier or is it a drop down type?
i use one of these almost exclusively now for lure fishing, they are great fun when targeting chub on lures in places where most rods cant cast
i used one of these as my first ultralight rod(well, a slightly older higher-quality version), it lasted almost 5 years before i felt it was time to get something better.
now i use a ABU garcia UL combo rod with a shimano sienna 500FD.

Most of us have added new braid to the reels....
could you try and catch a river trout on the pen rod?
I've done that, it's much fun.
Wow that fish was huge for that lil pole!!!!! Great product!!!
"That's a noice fesh!"
i love that old man. I love his vocabulary
Nice stuff. I have the same one but haven't used it ever. i had left it packed until I saw your video. I will take it for a spin when I go fishing next time. Probably will be good for catching bait fish on bobber.
3:50 who else thought he said "gotta land this bitch guys"😂😂😂
oh yeah lol
This is the first time watching your videos and I like them because your not like some of the others and you actually say the good thing about it.and not put it down
Great video. I touch ledger for everything. I even touch ledger for brown trout in my local stream.
Love my little pen fishing rod. play with the dog casting small tennis balls. Great videos. Thanks
Next challenge, Trout fishing!
Great vid' as always guys!
Great video,
Next challenge: use one on a boat for something like a cod?!
its actually alot of fun using lighter tackle, every fish feels like a monster! currently use a quantum magic perch 2.1m rod for pretty much everything, with a 1000 series reel and 11kg green braid.
you have got to do pike on the pen...Great video guys..
these rods are awesome for using on small creeks. ive caught some bass nearly the length of my arm with one of these (exact same rod). I think i put 6lb line on mine to get a longer cast with lighter rooster tails.

Fantastic little rods! My biggest carp has been on one of these. 20 pound in a local lake in NSW
another NSW carper? who would have thought there were 2 of us :) ive had a few nice mirrors from Lake Liddell, but not on a pen rod..... yet
Luis yep definitely reckon u can catch on jigs and lures
and the 15/20 g bottom fishing ? sorry to bother you guys
TAFishing try spinning for trout with it
why would you want to have sex with a fish
Luis, love these vids. Thanks to you and your dad.
I love using mine(blue) and also using my Zebco Dock Demon with Zebco ZSE20 reel even though I am a diehard Shakespeare rod and reel guy.
great video looks like good fun!
Be good to keep one in the bag with a controller on incase you see a few surfacing. Sometimes you just can't be bothered to de rig and re rig your main rod. Awesome guys!
Another great piece of entertainment guys. I'd like to see yous fishing for the Smoothies on that wee thing lol :)
you should try the ice fishing rod challenge :D
That's one for Mike.I don't function below 70 F .
Another great video guys, hope to hear more tips from Graeme in the next one pls don't get to comfy behind the came .
🎣 Tight lines.
bought on of those two years ago, to go in my backpack. not even used it once
Moar Mike and Graeme vids! :)
Looks good to me, I got The NGT 6 piece travel rod for a laff expecting to snap it 1st time out and was then going to rip it on social media...but it never let me down and I was using it today smashing roach wiv me bird . Love good cheep gear to play with.
great video, looks like lots of fun. I've had my pen pocket pole a few years now only thing I did was to put my favorite reel on it a (diawa 1000s).
Loved it thanks for the link, one on the way
glad i found your channel great video i am looking forward to getting my pen fishing rod now can`t wait
Just goes to prove you don't need mega expensive tackle to catch some quality fish . I've got a challenge for you , take that pen rod out on your boat and target some tope and smooth hound .
hi , loved the video , for a new challenge idea I'd recommend the rocket fishing rod ?
Brilliant video
i have bought so many of theese, stopped using them tho, i loved them. so easily transportable and actually fishes really well. biggest fish ive caught on a pen rod was an 8kg pike (in the winter tho, so not so hard fighting) - actually think it is an world record
the drag of the reel really does stick tho ...
have a waist pack to pack all your fishing gear in and have a hook and weight in the pen cap, you've got a nice compact fishing system, a kid could have his fishing kit to use on the way home from school with a small can or jar of corn or dough bait or rummage a worm from some rocks laying around the river bank or lake/pond side.
Always good videos.well done
So it is not.. the length of your rod that counts. As I have been saying for years.
Fabulous show! So glad I took your recommendation to subscribe from the TA Outdoors channel. thank you & best of success!
Jesus. I was worried about it for little rainbow trout. I feel more confident about this purchase
hi im from chipping norton i had one of the pen rods it was really good for lrf i had it for 1 year and snapped it 2 weeks ago i had a fish tried to set the hook and it snapped
dude, you said want to give us the paste bait receipe on 12:13. Still waiting......
I caught a carp close to 10 pounds on 4 pound line this spring, took 20 minutes to bring it in on a 7 foot rod!!!
looks so much fun. wonder if it would work LRF.
phil cha it's brilliant for lrf, caught corkwing and Ballan wrasse on it down in Cornwall, makes great sport of them
i wouls love for you to go for some perch or rock fish with that pen fishing pole kit but please use a salt water live bait and line thanks
haha - I have ordered one of these and will try it out in Cornwall.... I may try and video my session :)
Can you do more off these please like float fishing or put a feeder on it haha
always like watching your fishing videos :)
Great video guys. Have you tried the Master Mity Might fishing rod. This would make a great video.
I brought a pink one for my little sister she loves it! I want to take it chub fishing!
Best paste bait in the world? Wheaties with a little water then let it sit for an hour or two. Used it all the time when I was a kid.
I love watching your videos such intense enthusiasm from u I love it keep it up 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Nice set up hahaha
I've seen a few videos on these pen rods and it has broken on occasion. As regards paste baits, well you can't beat Gorgonzola for carp!
I wish We had the same dad that love fishing so ne and my dad both fishing 🙁 great all guide on maggots and fishing tips tricks
Cant believe how much you two sound alike lol iv only ever watched videos of Graeme so when I watched this video I couldn't believe it lol what's the casting weight of this rod please chaps? Great video, I'm going to give it a go :)
has the rod a suitable action to fly fish in small streams do you think?
those rods actually aren't that bad! the reels and the line tho... but you got that already^^ nice video again, gotta get one myself again. for trout tho
you got to try going for bass and mackerel for fun . keep going up in fish to see how far this mighty pen will go lol
I use oatmeal and vanilla flavor oil to catch big common carp.
This video come out on my brothers 15th Birthday
How big of a rod do you need for dock fishing btw your channels great
I feel like you’re the only one it is a spinning pen rod challenge, 100% better than the bait casting rod
Hes turning into dad big time!
Good job
love it, brilliant
Fantastic channel this ! just goes to show you dont need all these expensive tackle to catch nice fish and expensive bait , keep up the good work lads (go for a catfish next lol )
great video
I have one of those! I was fishing in a harbour in spain and i caught a 4lb mullet on it!
And a 5lb carp in England. What a battle !
What did you use on it to get the mullet?
I got some flour and mixed it with water to make a sort of paste, then I fed some bread and just flicked it out 6 inches under a clear float :)
hey man in from portugal , and wanted to ask you a question , did you did that on sea ?
Luis in a harbour
I have a just shy of 10lb on 1 of these rods, they're so much fun!
I'm buying one but idk if it would snap easily on pike or carp
Uncle Brandon's rice Wood32 he’s catching carp in this video fool
You should go for pike lure fishing
Hello, what's your bait to catch the carp? thanks
Love them I caught at 10 lb carp it took a while but I caught it
I seen that there are some baitcaster ones, do you guy know if they are any good ?
I'm new to fishing and their are trout and catfish in my local pond, so what kind of bait should I use? If possible where can I get it
Very nice to watch Mike and his father both of whom engage with the camera very well. Top tips and advice from these experts. I wanna buy a fixed spool pen rod to put in the backpack and cycle along the river looking for rising fish.

Fancy buying one of Amazon Mike where's the one your Dad was giving you from his freebies, sorry if you purchased this one before your dad got his lol; keep the challenges and the videos coming.
I got one of those with a whole kitt🎣🎣
We got 2 for £11 off Ebay, caught loads of fish with them, including Pike, great video
Bought my wife one of these a few years back and she out fished me. I was using a £180 Drennan. Last time i take her silver fishing.
I've had doubts about this Pen Rod, but if your dad thinks it's awesome, I can't argue...
Cheap and cheerful is what it is
how could that pen rod didnt break ? is it that strong ?
please answer anyone who knows, i'm new in fishing
ANJAY CHANNEL you'd be surprised how strong the ones are on the pen fishing rod page! lol, looks similar but I've caught huge carps on em! lol try it out and check out the page! I'm sure the ones on the page penfishing rods are a lot better, look it up on google. been a while since I been on the page
best fisherman ever how agrees
Is that swim 7? Or 17? I'll have to try it when I go on Sunday...
Hello from America. I use canned mackerel mixed with flour for my paste for catfishing with great success. The oils disperse perfectly in the water. I do have one question...when you say you caught a fish in the margins what do you mean by the margins? Ive never heard that phrase in fishing before. Thank you.
The margins are the area right close to the bank where you are fishing. It means really close in
TAFishing
Thank you for such a quick response! I love your channel. You have the coolest dad in the world!
Would it be good for me to take to school so when im walking home i can go to the river for about an hour theres only uk brown trout and i saw a golden trout there to
I usually fish for mackerel with a 10ft rod what line do you recommend to put on the reel ? it's a 4500 size reel
Depends if your fishing over rough ground, I use 10lb up to 15lb breaking strain as there are a few kelp beds were I fish.
