the best automatic hook setting rod holder ever was the original " Fish Popper " I still have one and can absolutely walk away from it and come back with a fish on.
Looks to me like there needs to be some improvement with the design. First. The spikes included are not universally stable. The spikes provided don’t seem to set deep enough into the sand to withstand the mechanical hook setting power and pops out of the ground all the time. There should be longer spikes for sand and a flat platform included to set rocks on top of or a single solid pole to slip between rocks if you’re fishing riprap or rocky shorelines. There really needs to be some kind of extra counterweight at the butt end of the pole for stability as well. I also agree the pole should be detachable from the anchoring post. The concept seems practical, just don’t think the design was thoroughly thought through for real life applications.
in new zealand we use a stretchy thread to tie on our baits to the hook so it doesnt fall off , works really goood with shrimp, prawn, pilchards, especially when they thaw out and become super soft. the thread wraps around it and keeps it on the hook
the angle of the rod i think matters too, could be the camera but It looks like the tip of the rod is pointing down rather then a little bit up to get a good set with the mechanism? cause it has alot smaller range of motion on the set you would normally do
Not only is it not a scam, you don't even need it. Primitive people learned how to use a young bent over tree to do it. You can find videos online. You just set it, forget it and wait till the bent tree sets the hook as it unbends.
There’s no trees on a beach lol to say they are a scam is kind of far fetched. These particular ones I wouldn’t trust but the ones using your own rod are more than proven.

Maybe anchor it further, a tether to a tent peg? Seems like the snap counters the hold at the other end of the fulcrum. Sand isn't holding the pressure from the spikes
