Haven't seen AFD at FDIC. Guess it's too far to drive. Just kidding. I must say...I've been a firefighter for 23 years. I've wondered about firefighting in other states. And other countries. But I never even thought about there being one in Antarctica. Just opened my mind to a new world of extreme firefighting. When it's 10 below in Indiana...I can almost relate to what they go through.
10 below and you can relate to 60 below or more? Right.
In the UK we don't have deck guns or a ladder company at Every station at my station in England we have 2 pump ladders and in my whole county which is covered by humberside fire and rescue we have 3 hydraulic platforms based at hull Bridlington and Scunthorpe to cover the whole of east Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire the pump ladders come with hand ladders and an extension ladder
What amazed me was how normal everything looked, with the exception of having a "full" communications center adjacent to the engine bay. Hell, they even had the dang grill outside. If it hadn't been for all the "Antarctic Fire Department" logos, you could have told me that this was a station in Alaska, or maybe the Dakotas, and I would have believed it.
Only you can prevent forest fires.
ice melts it does not burn number of forest fires in the last two centuries 0.

Hi 👋
How fucking cool would it be to put on a resume "firefighter in Antarctica for x years" or bring it up when meeting people. Instant power move.
Parkourpotato I would casually bring that up on a date.😭😂
Would've been nice to see a quick shot of all of the apparatuses they have. As well, would've been nice to add in what sorts of calls they usually go to, how they respond to fires, etc.
Do you get jealous that Santa is only at the North Pole?
Trent Hall santa isnt real kid
@@danielcoffaro20 Not what your mom says! Lol
Says someone 3 feet off the ground.
@@wurned huh??
Even toxic 9 year old reverse cards, I love the internet.
Straight up, I’m thinking about doing this
This is a real treat to see...just one word...WOW!
Never been there but thank you for doing what you guys do
Thank you very much for going to the time effort and trouble of making these videos we do appreciate it warmest respect to you all regards Peter and Cameron
I don't know why but it never crossed my mind there would even be a fire department in Antarctica.
there are several ones; Also European ones
@@pixelated3a974 sure :D
Thanks for your videos I'll be down for the summer session as a firefighter so this video was awesome
This is exactly why I create these videos! Enjoy the summer Alex!
I find these videos interesting. Thanks!
Thanks for this man. I pray i get the job this august
Lol this is our meeting room and our grill video ends.
Not much of a 'Tour' was it?? I think he could have Easily made it a 30 minute video, and still not covered everything.
I spent 7mos in Antarctica at McMurdo and the Pole. Was a wonderful experience. I wholeheartedly recommend going.
How hard is it to get selected?
WANT A TASTE, APPLY & FIGHT FIRES OVER THE WINTER MONTHS IN ALASKA'S INTERIOR, GOOD JOB!! THX FOR THE VIDEO.
I'm looking into applying for a dispatch position at McMurdo, this is facinating!
My question/questions is/are, what's population size? Coverage area size. Call volume? Type of calls you typically respond to?
I didn't know Paul Giamatti was an Antarctic fire fighter
2 years later and I just saw this comment. I appreciate that. Normally I'm compared with Gru from despicable me
I applied a couple of weeks back. I hope to hear back from them.
Hahaha that fire captain sort of looks like Lou from rescue me
first question would hav been is there many fires a year ??
0 lol
Better question, ask about their record on actually big fires...
The only firehall, and firefighters, that could be mistaken for a hard rock-n-roll band !! :-)
Cool jobs, really, -26 degrees cool.
I'm freezing just watching this!
I was a FF I / PHRN. (Fire Fighter External Attack and Hazmat Specialist (nuclear) and Prehospital Registered Nurse … I was injured in an accident and became a nurse practitioner in neuroscience and psychiatric nursing with a sub specialty in brain injury. When I ran EMS I also had a nursing specialty as a CEN / TNCC and was working on my Trauma Nurse First Assist … I think I would have enjoyed working down there …
Greetings from Iowa. Stay safe
Greetings from Des Moines!

THANK YOU
Can you order things from the internet in Antarctica?
I'm gonna guess only during the summer when they can land planes. If you Google McMurdo APO USPS actually gives you cut off dates in the document. :)
Ice, rocks and penguins but the shipping is really expensive.
@@scootertrash911 Lol!!😀
@@scootertrash911. Can you imagine what it cost to ship those trucks even from southern south America?
mis nomer how much is shipping?
I’m trying to get my EMT and then go to Fire academy and get my IFSAC and my ARFF. I almost meet the criteria’s to work in McMurdo almost.
I have an off the wall question: how is concrete poured in these conditions? How do you keep the surface under the concrete frozen?
By adding enough chloride and hydraulic cement. We used to pour underwater in some apps like docks and boat launch’s. It’s how we did it in Michigan. I was a concrete driver for a lot of years They always used a pump that way they could place exactly and keep dry until it is placed where contractors wanted it. With enough chloride pouring on roads we had to pour out so fast if not by the end of ten yards it was drying in our chutes. You could drive on it by end of day.
Wes is watching hockey, cool
Great video mate, do these guys do anything else down there to or just this? Btw how big is the South Pole station? Also, the hospital is that in the main building?
They are the first responders to emergencies whether fire, or ambulance, spills, etc. Hard to tell you how big south pole station is what do you mean? Like building wise? Currently has 40 people there. Yes it is and I have a viideo coming up of the medical building. A seperate building
I love your videos and watch every single one of them, repeatedly, but holy mother of God, that ear drum popping loud intro music...
Now you feel death's COLD embrace!
50 firefighters during summer? holy crap, I thought it was mostly small research teams and I also thought there might be a few hundred there at any given time. I guess I was wrong.
What does the firefighter job pay?
Cool 😎 like it
We love emt and firefighter s
This is like maytag repair man.
Nice video
Firefighters where do you work at.
Regular firefighters:I get to work in the Bay Area! It is the coolest place ever!
The Antarctic firefighters: Hold my beer.
I want that sweet fire van!
The vanbulance?
My dream job.
Did you work with Brad Rayburn? He was there around the same time as you. I’m also a firefighter on MS Gulf Coast where it’s nice and warm year long.
The difference is they stoke the fires rather than put them out. Gotta stay warm.
So how does food work? Is everything mostly shelf stable/dehydrated/frozen? What are meals like? Is there fresh stuff like fruit brought in with flights over the summer?
you misspelled Snow Fighters
Hell yeah these guys are smokin blunts all day waiting for a call lmao
very cool fd.
Hoping I can get to this level someday, I’m on my first year as a firefighter/EMT with my district in Illinois
Just keep throwing snowball.. itll be out before they get there. Unlimited supply
I'v wanted to go down there for years my good friend Kelvin.H aka my model maker is going to make me that Ford F350...
Here in the States, we have NFPA guidelines. What do y'all have down there?
Do these guys to patch swaps? Would love to get a patch or two from em for some of course from my hall!
How competitive is it to get on? What qualifications sealed the deal? Thanks!
Check out PAE, that is who holds the contract a d the requirements are listed on their page.
i like they trucks....115 looked liked its been striped a base model pickup is it in service
What type of lounge chairs do they supply you with?
I wonder how many calls they get and how many ppl live down there.
Too cold for me! I’ll just stay here in the south
He said there is no mutual aid, but Russia, Italy, and New Zealand all have Fire Agencies in Antarctica.
They must have a mixed solution with anti-freeze in the holding tanks to prevent freezing.
Actually antifreeze would be bad for the environment. They used (at least used to). 3phase powered heaters in the tank. Would keep them warm when truck was not running and truck powered heaters when truck was running.
It's explained at 4:50
I’m sorry but I’m suppose to believe that metal building that is ABOVE ground is in Antarctica? I’m a firefighter here in Canada and we get to -40 all the time and there is NO WAY that building wouldn’t leak like a sive!
If you look in the video it's a concrete foundation in the ground
As a radio nut, I gotta ask. What bands/frequencies or such do you all use? Being it's Antarctica I wouldn't think there'd be a lot of hills or interference from that, so maybe got a deal on odl VHF Low band?
All of the radios I have seen on various videos appear to be with VHF antennae which would indicate around the 150mhz frequency area. With being close to the south pole, low band VHF would probably get too much interference from other parts of the world and UHF and higher would be useless due to the distances they need signal to travel.
Wold be fun
Was crash crew in the Marines, how hard is it to get this gig?
He looks like count Dracula, ruler of the night...
So since they are on the bottom of the earth is the emergency number 6ll?
Wow how do people handle the freezing cold all the time down there?
Could have been better....thanks for the coverage!
What are your more common calls out there??
Challenges with water in the winter...
I say use salt water from the ocean salt water doesn't freeze.
Salt water would corrode the truck's tanks lines and hydrants
They rescue fire from getting frozen.
I see the trucks have blinky lights. I assume they have sirens. My question is, why?
To warn all the traffic and pedestrians in the streets of an approaching emergency vehicle 😂
Would they help a bad fire at Scott base, or vice-versa?
They would definitely help a fire at Scott Base, but vice versa not as much.
Why is that
The engine is a 1957 Howe with an electric clutch that is difficult to get into pump gear.
Whats the pay like? Is it worth it?
Wow looks absolutely horrible. Super motivated firefighter too.. I thought we had it bad with our old equipment and stations.
Let me sign up!
Is fire occurs in South pole?
I didn't know you could drive trucks on the ocean. That was a joke..
Where do I sign up?
No mutual aid? Just call the penguins
Do you guys get a lot of calls in Antarctica?
When is the wildfire season?
How do they deal with the water supply, pumps, hoses, etc freezing up ?
It's explained at 4:50... the tanks, pumps and piping are heated.
Plus they're using a lot of dry chem which he explained
@@firefighteruppy9121 but they can't heat everything. How would they deal with a established fire where they need more water than what's on the engine...
Also to add to what's already been stated. Most modern fire pumps have a function " Tank to Pump" that can be utilized to rotate H2O so it won't freeze, also attack lines can remained cracked open at about 15gpm to prevent the hoses from freezing solid. In Alaska this turns the surrounding of a rig into a rink,** with limited supply I don't know exactly what they do down there! Adapt and improvisation has to be the way to go!!
How much do they pay?
One of my friends was stationed there it's cold af.
What's the pay like? Is it fulltime work or seasonal? And do you have to have any special certs?
2 of your 3 questions can be answered, if you had watched the video and payed attention.
@@jackiechan_wtf4041 I found what I was looking for. They didn't answer the questions I was looking for on the video. No need to be a smartass.
@@mtaylor017 That's right sweetie, make yourself look like less of an idiot, just beacuse someone called you out. Next time you'll open your ears and pay attention.
Who enforce law in that town?
One person here is a Marshall. And acts as everything with that. But thats just to establish who is in charge of that. People never get out of hand like that.
Two guys, Smith and Wesson
Growing unauthorized.plants is a violation of the Antarctic treaty. Used to be up to 10 years in prison and/or $10000 fine but then to have gotten it there you had to have gone thru New Zealand so possible.international.incident.
beside the one marshall , I guess the Alaska State Troopers would be the law.
@@MrHgavino mcmurdo is in antarctica my dude. not only is that the complete wrong side of the world, but also complete different continent. dunno how alaska would help lmao.
Is there really that many fires on Antarctica that they need a whole fire dept? Is there a police force too
I'm in my canoe in the Atlantic and on my way. I hope to find a job when I get there. Is there still radioactive waste removal to be done from that reactor that melted down or leaked, and killed all those folks?
Have you ever had to rescue a penguin
thats bizzare, why does antarctica need a fire department?
Whats the emergency number?
Not all departments are payed
Do polor bears ever visit the fire house . and try to get in
Polar Bears are only found in the Arctic (North pole).
I felt this video was incomplete and I didn't learn very much from it. It doesn't help to have a presenter / interviewer that knows nothing about the topic that he's chosen to cover! A few prepared questions would help. Perhaps beforehand, ask the officer: "What questions might fire or ambulance crews want to ask?"
Who in their right mind would want to work down there. Insane hours, brutal cold. naaa thanks anyway.
How many people live in Antarctica?
