- My job is the McMurdo Retail Clerk for the 2023 Astral Summer season. This video is a tour around the store after hours so you can see what we sell. :)

I kinda always wondered how all this works... Never would have expected that they would even have alcohol there honestly. Figured it was a "dry" camp. Can people make special requests to order things they may want such as like for example, I dont smoke but I chew copenhagen. Could someone order in like a case of chewing tobacco if they wanted it? Neat video tho.

Is it less common outside of Michigan? Makes me wonder if there are a few Michiganders out at McMurdo or whether the Americans in general are just fond of it.
I've never tried it, it looks quite hard to find in my country (Australia), which makes it quite amusing that it's easier to find in Antarctica.

Inside the buildings can get quite warm. Plus, people buy them as souvenirs for people back home. :)

Nice video. How do you handle shoplifters, or for people that steal a lot, those committing grand theft? Do you call the McMurdo Police, have them hog-tie the offenders, throw them in the back of the cop car, then take them to McMurdo Prison? Do they keep the hard-core criminals separate from the petty thieves in the prison, to try to prevent prison riots? ;)

I've thought about doing an Antarctica trip off and on; any word on how much a person should have saved? I've heard in most cases you have to have a job or some functional role down there to qualify to go.
They got rid of the local bar. Yikes! I guess no more video rental section at the store.
Bars still exist - they're now BYOB. All DVDs are in dorm lounges that people can borrow whenever.

Why do you need a fridge in Antarctica?
How do people who forget their cuddly toys get through polar wintery without you selling such?!
You can recieve packages at McMurdo, but they do need to be sent well before winter to ensure they will arrive before the station closes for winter. Plus it depends on how big the package is. If it was a good sized cuddly toy I would think that you might be able to vacuum seal it, it's easier to send smaller parcel packages than boxes because whilst the C-17 planes do carry personal packages scientific equipment takes priority, of course, so a package may wait some time before there is room in a plane to take it. So the smaller and lighter a package is the more likely it will be able to find a place on a plane to arrive more quickly.
I don't think I would let myself forget a cuddly toy, I couldn't leave myself without one. Especially because even though McMurdo is amazing in the dark winter I'd probably be thinking about The Thing.

not in the cafeteria, there is a whole other lounge/hang out building called the coffee house that is where the espresso maker lives.

US dollars since it's run by the US Antarctica Program.
@@TheJoyfulTravelista Ok. I know the kiwis up the road buy things, I guess there would be an exchange office for them. I know McMurdo is in the Ross Dependency, NZ territory. I even know about Air New Zealand plane crash that occurred in the 80s (Mount Erebus disaster). So I expect NZ to have some influence on McMurdo.

So none of this is real. Its all made up. The earth is flat and Antarctica is really a giant army base under the ice, which is artificial. Also there’s a huge ice wall that cannot be gone around, over, or thru. Yes…..I’m being sarcastic towards flatbearthers 😂
I guess when you go; you have to pack a fat suitcase, cause you barely get the basics.
I would definitely hire a graffiti artist to come down and put some serious color and murals on those painted walls...my god what a horrible color. I would lose my mind if I had to look at those walls every single day. That's a quality of life issue if I ever seen one. Maybe hold a contest when the next crew comes on see if you have any talented budding artists that want to take a crack at it. @ least put up some posters...because right now you have a picture of a volcano and an iceberg right behind you @ the end of the video, an iceberg really?, you don't see enough of them do you?/s
the views outside more than make up for the colors inside.
