Antarctica Jobs - Power Plant

- My tour around the McMurdo Station Power Plant and the massive generators that power the place here. If you have experience being a power plant operator, electrician, mechanic, or in charge of one of these places, feel free to check out the link below. I don't know too much about these generators, so don't ask specific questions. Enjoy! One of my last videos!!
Thanks for watching! :)

It's amazing that you guys have enough fuel to power you through the whole winter!
Lasts all summer too.
Yup 365 days a year
Several hundred thousand gallons of diesel and your good to go between fill ups.
Proves That Fuel Lasts Longer Than 6 Months

Very, very cool. I had wondered what peak usage was for the base - 2MW for the entire operation is nothing to sneeze at.
Makes sense the desalination would be colocated with the powerplant.
Aren't there some windmills down there now, too? They must be a pain to service.
In an Antarctica Station the power plant that generates electricity and provides heat is very important. If the power plant got badly damaged, which happened once at Vostok Station, it becomes very difficult to survive.
You don’t say.
Our auxiliary generator in the power plant I worked in was very similar. 1.2 MW Scotch Marine if I remember correctly. Ran on diesel fuel. It was not large enough to put the plant back on line in the event of a blackout but we could keep vital equipment running. Turbine (3- 75 MW units) turning gear motors, plant lighting, etc. Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Wow , nice, a far , far difference from Penguin Power and Light power plant I worked with in 1977 - 1978. When I did a Winterover, was an amazing experience.
So cool! Hoping to come down this summer as an electrician
What do you folks do for fun? I can imagine you make your own fun. Hope that all the family is safe and you never run out of fuel. Good job, Thank you for the channel.
They literally bring a fuel ship down there.
They got plenty of fuel..... for everthing.
Damn! I want that Piston and rod👍😮
I love the size of that piston
Great Video Thanks for sharing
I'm a NETA 2 test technician. I just retired after 35 years of high voltage electrical testing. Do you need any help?
Hey sir, any ETA on my winning t-shirt. You sent it out a while back, never got it (Orland Park IL)
Its on its way Aug 24th, remember I had to wait til the next flight came in? It will get to you in about 2-3 weeks. Standby
Ayyyyy IL gang represent
Being a sysadmin myself, would it be able for you to make a McMurdo Datacenter tour?
Sorry, unfortunately I have ran out of time. But its pretty normal center i would say.
@@KVexKVex Aw man, wish I we could have seen how the infrastructure was at there
Pretty interesting stuff. 🙂
Very interesting! Any idea on the diesel consumption of those generators?
A diesel engine usually (not the very small or extremely large but about this size) takes 0,27 l/h per kW. If they all were running at full load, a total of 6000 kW it would take 1600 l/h. But I suspect they don't run all att full load at the same time, probably keeping at least one engine as backup.
He said they peak at just over 2MW usage in the summer. They have over 10MW total available.
So they rotate generators in and out at their most efficient usage/service needs... about 3/4 load each gen... The units are paralleled as meeded... they have back up power for back up power, better then a ship... where they are located....that's a must...redundant fuel/storage/delivery systems....they aren't going to freeze..
I think they have roughly 450,000 Gallon capacity. Enough to power everything for a year.
WHOA! How many people are living there?!? And who's paying for all of it?? I had no idea there was more than just a small outpost with several people at most. Crazy!
Are the only things manned 24/7 the Power station and Fire Department, KVex?
During winter, yes
Is wind energy not an option there?
Australian, kiwis and Italian base have windmills there
The wind in Antarctica gets rather gusty, but sometimes it drops off entirely. Solar is impractical because of the location. Wind goes from nothing to borderline catastrophic (hard on turbines). This is the most cost effective and environmentally responsible way to generate electricity in a relatively pristine environment. There's some significant environmental controls in place.
Steven Biars Thank you for the information! Very interesting.
@@stevenbiars6212 I was going to ask about environmental controls, with all the diesel fuel and exhaust fumes that comes with this type of generation.
See 2:37. You can see them on his graphic

This is exactly what I am leaving to do at mcmurdo soon! So psyched
Are you down there for the summer season?
D'oh!
K, How many people sleep in your room and are there trade personnel on site ie carpenters/civil engineers?? Thanks. John
Are there also regenerative powerstations or only diesel generators?
Regenerate from what?
Have total 5 2 megawatt units just like this at work. Suck a lot of fuel.
Sounds like it is knocking...
All engines knock. The ones your used to working on are much quieter than those. Bigger engines are gonna make more noise. I'm sure if those ever started knocking it'll probably sound like the cops banging on your door.
Why diesel generators over maybe some gas turbines? Like a GE frame 7?
Could be that diesel doesn’t explode like natural gas can. My next guess would be storage space requirements.
With about the same energy for a given mass when burned, oil and natural gas aren't that far apart. Diesel is a heck of a lot easier to transport and store. With the right maintenance, diesels are extremely reliable, not that there's anything wrong wiht gas turbines.
How do they manage all that saturation heat?
Sounds like its heating all the buildings
@@tractorboy31 that's really balla' never seen than before.
Their called CHP units when combined in heat/power... there was a big push to do peak shaving (help grid load) with those years ago in the US... but they proved too maintenance intensive to be practical... but in a place where heat is valuable it's a good use... the stand by units at 1 regular US hospital would be a little over half of what you have available there... But they just sit waiting for a power outage.
@@michaelmccarthy4615 yea it's really interesting that they have 6 generators. Usually for important equipment you have 5. 2 in use, 2 in reserve, and 1 in maintenance. Though maybe the 6th is for the powerplant itself?
@@SpenserRoger I'm sure they have more units then most because they (power) are so critical in Antarctica.. they parallel those units in and out of service on load/maintenance requirements... according to the video, the power plant is a locked and secured building even though its manned 24/7! (And you supposedly know everyone around you!) that says a lot on how serious that power plant is to their survival....
Which tank brews the alcohol Lmao
Half of the supply flights must be diesel fuel.
Interesting that the array of fire suppression bottles looks nearly identical to the footage of a 1962 government film on power production. Oh, but now two rows deep. For the nuke plant they had there, I believe.
Wow total don't know anything about a power plant. Pretty scary for those there trusting him!
✌️❤️
You get 70 thousand a year for this right?
I don't know any power plant operators that make that....all higher
I just got my primary contract for this exact job. Its 1800 a week so 7200 a month

I cannot contain my excitement, that thing is actually running Linux. I am tired of seeing Windows in places where Linux can run smoothly, better, efficiently, power plants ain't a joke and I don't want a OS which breaks every few months due to security shit. That's actually GNOME, and I am so fucking happy.
😛😂 and i bet that it had nothing at tall to do with kinship system or having your biological parents being only biological males ^^
powering WHAT?????!!!!! ALL of the infrastructure that you show us in pictures is of small little shacks on the surface .... TELL US THE TRUTH!!!!!
Zzzzzzzz.......
@@nathanwahl9224 wake up Nathan
Watching you is like watching a child. Give an adult the camera and go back to the arts and crafts room.
yes, in summer the power consumption goes up.
because they use their air conditioner units, because it's to damn hot.
