Average Artist Problems

- when you're kinda good at art but also not amazing it creates a bunch of unique and very fun to deal with problems
lemme know which ones you relate or don't relate to! i'm interested in if the average skill-level artist struggle is real or if my imposter syndrome is just that extreme
if ya want more i actually made a video last year about more general artist problems: • Things I Can't Stand -...

Honorable mentions:
- drawing the other eye is hard
- accidentally doing lineart on the sketch layer
- H A N D S .
Accidentaly doing half of the sketch on the background layer and realizing only after you're done -.-
lol that's y I do online art so I can just copy, paste, and flip the eye
Another honorable mention:
ACCIDENTALLY DRAWING ON THE FREAKIN BACKGROUND LAYER

Alternate Title: Getting called out for almost 4 minutes.

I didn't know I could get so called out in just under 4 minutes
If this ain't the truth
So true
i have never been so offended by something i 100% agree with

Cant forget “you end up drawing something in a style thats FAR too similar and people call you a tracer for it”
Or the complete opposite - you can't manage to draw in any style other than your own
Nah
Oh gosh that reminds me once that I drew a lewd using a gif for my reference. Someone recongized the ref and while not saying it lowkey accused me of tracing it. I draw traditionally with a sketch book which was obvious from the scan. Thankfully the server ripped them apart or it. Best/Worst part? My style is no where near what I refed either so the accusation is even more bizarre
"Too hard to draw a cute circle. But too boring to draw a perfect circle"
Now thats a thing
The level of relatable is so damn high
Is nice?
Almost like thats the point
Ye
I cant relate.
My drawing is terrible
@far ONE I'm sorry, Master. The force can't fix it.
What is he doing?
He is making circle
He is crying
It's me.

😔Us..
Circles are way too hard man...
"you get art blocked six times a week"
I FELT THAT ONE

1:07 I once used the free trial for clip studio paint and I *thought* I understood most things and was considering buying one of the license, *I then proceeded to accidentally delete the colour wheel.*
Oof
similar story but not art, i was practicing roblox studio (i was really new at the time) after turning the language from spanish to english, i thought i had mastered it.
and then the toolbox got deleted
The sketch: amazing
The final piece:
Skill: Aight imma head out
this is exactly why I ditched lineart, my work improved so much just by embracing a more sketchy style
also I hated doing lineart, it was my least favorite part of drawing
This. This is the most true thing *ever*.
Exactly
I do it traditionally and I want to improve on line art but whenever I do try it looks awful. I love pencil drawing, but without line art I can't really use my markers or colored pencils and make it look good
For real tho
"Your sketches looks better than the final piece"
SO. TRUE.

FINALLY. SOMEONE SAID IT!

Yes-- so true 😔
As an artist, I relate to this on a spiritual level.
Same
Same
no joke I was thinking the EXACT same thing.
I used to be very good at art on paper and HORRIBLE on digital art, but now it’s the opposite
"What's your curse?"
"Everything I draw turns out cute."
Actually made me laugh. XD
My curse is that everything I draw turns out edgy.
My mom has the exact opposite issue lol, everything turns out incredibly realistic when she just wants it to be cute
That's all artests.
My curse is that everything I draw look really made by a person who has parkinson
“You can’t draw cars”
HOW DARE YOU OFFEND MY DEMENTED TURTLE WITH WHEELS!
xD
Pretty much anything mechanical doe
,_,
I’m actually pretty decent drawing cars tbh
I disagree. I’m decent at cars, but...
Only if they are square. Like a Lada
2:48 This reminds me of when I made my own personal charecter (and keep in mind that the charecter had a broken pot with a plant on top as their head). The day after I posted it I saw another artist having a mask of A BROKEN POT WITH A PLANT ON TOP. Idk if I should delete it or not
Dont
"constantly getting asked by family members for free art"
I feel that on a spiritual level

“Having really good art ideas but saving them till you better a art”
Chipflake is a mind reader
Pain.
That's why I draw and post sketch pages XD like if I don't know what I could draw I look over them and see if I can find an old idea I could finally finish
Still doing that since 12 lol
I tried drawing a dragon the other day as opposed to my normal (which is basic animals such as house cats, foxes and wolves. I did an owl and a squirrel three times, but the only one that looks good is the squirrel.) and it came out horrible.
So I decided to hold off on that and instead draw an OC that I've had for years and never really given a personality to until earlier that day.
Turned out... Okay. Ish. But it worked. I've drawn them about four time now.
This is way to relatable
You forgot one:
You can either draw realistic or comic like, never both!
Draw with Jazz’s has entered the chat
I can both
I am your 69th like so the law requires me to write down the next word;
*nice*
So true, a couple of days ago I wanted to draw myself as a pokemon trainer so I took inspiration from Sword/Shileld trainers and it was super hard because I'm so used to drawing cartoons.
i can do traditional digital and cartoon and realistic backgrounds and characters but i can’t draw characters with nice backgrounds
P.S.;
- Everything either looks good until you stare at it too hard, until the next time you look at it, or you give up on it, and years down the line, you find out you were actually on to something.
-You can make something you're INCREDIBLY proud of, but as soon as someone wants to see it, panic mode engages.
-You got scarred for life when you showed something to someone you thought was good at the time, but looking back, it was actually awful, and oh my goodness, I can't live with myself.
-You get embarrassed drawing other people, so you always just draw yourself, but now it just feels like you're self-absorbed, and you don't know how to fix that, so you just never show anyone.
-Your OCs are simultaneously the thing you're most proud of, and the thing you're most embarrassed of.
I love my OC's so much, and I've put so much work into them
They will only live in the depths of my imaginations and on my laptop, never to see the light of day
@@sandcat2383 Exactly. At this point, the only times people ever see them is when they're in writing projects I share with my friends, or they appear as D&D characters
As an average level artist I can confirm this is *completely accurate*
It hurts, but it's true
Same. Especially imposter syndrome
Another problem: when you draw something for the purpose of practicing coloring but it actually turns out good so you're too scared to color it because you'll ruin it.
Same
im not coloring cuz i only have:

How to art:
1. Draw a thing
2. If the thing is bad...

True :/
3 draw it again
4 repeat
Cover it up because you spent time and effort on that art but you also never want to see it again
"You can draw cars"
Funny how my first drawing as a child was cars and in the 4th grade
It got a little more detailed
And now that I'm all grown up
I'm just stuck with Furries.

Don’t forget the:
“How the heck did I draw this last night, and now it all looks trash-“
This
Omg yes!
y e s
True.
I would like a drawing for a few days then look at it again and it would look like trash..
Honorable mention:
When you hate a piece you drew and everybody is like: “it looks so good! 🤩”
When you draw a piece you love, and other people are like: “the proportions look weird 😐”
OMG YES
*_Frustration noises_*
That happened to me (I think) *CONFUSION*
FELT THAT
SB Draws vibes
I've learned after years of art that I might as well draw the really cool ideas anyway and risk it sucking because then at least I can remember the idea and redraw it when I'm better at art.
And... That usually goes you never find a time to redraw it because your have even better ideas to draw
2:44
I feel this on a spiritual level.
Im doing inktober this year and for some reason even though I do digital art I have my heart set on doing it in a sketchbook with ink pens and stuff, so I have to draw on digital and then trace my own work from my ipad to scratch paper, and then from scratch paper to my sketchbook because I dont want to waste ink by priniting the original drawing. But also Im pressured by a sketchbook because every page feels like it has to be the mona lisa van gough masterpiece or something.
“You can’t draw cars.”
“You know you should practice the fundamentals, but it’s just sOOO BOORING”
*I feel personally attacked what*
Tell this to my silvia s13
"You can draw either furries or humans... but never both"
That hurt me on so many personal levels
same tho-
I can draw both, it’s just... human head proportions are so horrible and wolf ones are just like “square, rectangle, triangles, Kay you’re good.”
I can draw both, but furries are much easier.
@@arrowhead8856 yeah. that's how I feel
I'm more on the drawing human side I guess since most things I draw are humanoid, but I don't apply to this really since I like drawing grotesque monsters and entities, not humans or furries.
"you can either draw humans or furries, never both"
me being able to draw both: *I have mastered the arts of the god*
2:35
This is how I look at your animations and my motivation is to draw something xD
"You're either good at traditional or digital art, never both."
How about bad at both?
same
a.k.a. IMPOSTER SYNDROME
It means you're good at something else!
Im only good at digital art ;-;
It never occured to me that this was even a thing; it explains so much!
"You can either draw humans or furries, never both."
Dang, can't tell if that's true for everyone or not but its true for me.
well it refers to "Average-skilled Artist " so its very accurate. if you can do both then you are likely above Average and thus this does not apply in general.
bruh
yeah same i can do both
I can't draw furries or humans because i suck so much at human-like anatomy but I can draw cats... that's about it
I started out with humans and I find that they are far harder than furries. When I need to draw furries I don't have much trouble
“You can only draw humans or furries”
Me who can draw both: *intense sweating*
“You’re either really good at digital art or traditional art, never both.”
Me who’s good at both: *even more intense sweating*
me who can't do animals without intence help and can't draw humens without them looking like stickfigurs. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Same
I would say I’m good at both but.. *my art style seems like it changed and my hand just became someone else’s hand*
that means you may not be an "average" artist
me who can't use MS paint "well f^*k"
Just respect him, he had to draw EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL even he had to be drew.
If someone claims “your art sucks” because you won’t give them free art just say “yeah, that’s why I didn’t want to give it to you”, it will make the person shut up
don't tear yourself down like that :( just ignore them, it's always best than just agreeing with what they're saying.
I would just say "then why did you want me to make you art in the first place" or "takes one to know one" and sometimes "I'd like to see YOU try"
depends on how much I hate the person :]]
@@shintsukimi8530 yes!! that's a way better answer
There are no such thing as bad arts, unless drawn by unskilled ones. And there's no competition in art, cos art is part of beauty law (choices of flavors, bore, music choices, etc) not spatial law (anything related to maths and space, running race for example). Competitions like art, dance, etc. are about to bring juries to fall in love. It's very subjective and cannot be counted cause of beauty law
Wolfe Cara
“your art sucks”
Then why are you buying it...
I don’t get artist blocks, I get this thing called
*Lazy*
Woah, we have something in common
Big mooood
wow, this is so kinda relatable
I can't seem to avoid laziness
Sameeee, I’ve gotten art block a fair amount in the past (usually in drawing comics or in class when I should be paying attention anyways) but now I just can’t be bothereddddddd or am waiting to get better
Don't call me out like this man
Being so self conscious/having so little confidence you never actually make anything because you think it’ll look bad, yet wanting to make so much stuff.
pair that with thinking you’ll never be as good as anyone else’s because even their sketch layers are better than your passion project.
My existence in a nutshell
"Expensive!" I can relate xD I make lots of cheap adopts like most 5USD or less (unless ref.Sheet) and said I am expensive lol
When you are drawing your oc in public:
Person: Oh are you drawing yourself?
Me: Yes. This person with a neon pink mohawk and this furry on the next page is me.
Even when it's _not_ an OC. I actually had the following conversation once- (paraphrased, because it was so long ago I don't remember the exact words).
*Mom:* Oh, what a cute self portrait!
*Me:* Mom, that's Roll. She's Megaman's sister!
*Mom:* But it looks just like you!
*Me:* How often do I wear a ponytail? And she's blonde! I just haven't colored her hair yet.
*Mom:* Well I think you should give it dark hair and make it into a drawing of you because it already looks so much like you.
*Me:* _You're saying I look like a robot girl from a Japanese video game?_
*Mom:* No, but I'm saying _that drawing looks like you._

"You get art blocks 6 times a week"
when is the day you don't get one i'm intrigued
My mind: Greece looks so similar to my art
My Final Piece: GUSFYHRFFUJHDRJN
I think it's probably the times where you don't want to draw the most, like when you're REALLY tired. Cause that's just when the mind likes to start working for some reason.
Friday morning, but only 11am-1pm
Sunday
You never know, you only notice when the day's almost over and you only have a few hours to jump on it.
I relate so much. Getting an idea on what to draw, starting, procrastinating for like, 7 weeks, then going back to the project to finish it, only do 0.3% progress and leaving it again to rot for 3 months, coming back to it, and staring at it, just because I don't know how to execute the idea. Happens all the time. In fact, it is happening right now, which really pains me.
Im an average skill artist as well, and i deal with all of these problems
“You can only draw furries or humans, never both”
Felt that
Yeah,can confirm
I can't even draw a cat properly-
I still have the muscle memory from my FNaF phase lmao
My humans are decent by I'm definitely much stronger in the animal department.
@@skylarfox_bmb You had that phase too?
One of my best drawings was Lefty,I should still have it somewhere on my gallery
Now I draw mostly humans, but I still use some of the techniques I learned by drawing mechanical animals
I swear I'm really bad at drawing humans. Guess I'm more on the furry side
You forgot one.
When something you literally took 12 minutes to make gets more likes than something that took you 4 hours solely because of the fandom it fits into.
So true
For me The Fandom part doesn’t even always come into play
Not even a fandom maybe because it just is randomly liked more
For some reason drawing porn art of characters from a game gets me more likes than drawing a character I spent hours designing. But I don't blame people, robot adult time is nice
This is just art honestly it's AWFUL
I'm a beginner with less than 2 years of experience and can relate to most of this. Strangely, that gives me hope.
I can relate to some of these, but thinking my art isn’t good enough because there’s so many voices in my head that it kinda just frowns out the noise.
Dont forget, Posting a peice youve put your heart and soul into and only getting a few likes because youre not popular
And then someone else stealing it and getting thousands of likes and stealing everything else you posted from before
Oof
A Dog how did you know!!??😱
*cries in you need to be popular to grow on most social medias, and most people don't upvote/like sketch/paper art*
Eeeeeeeeee
Here's another one.
You can only draw faces from one side.
BRO its so true
Am always drawing faces to the side cuz when am drawing face from normal side it look just...um u know
@@siurak the noses look so weird like in the middle and... symmetry
Fuu

I cant ever draw faces facing foward... honestly I just cant draw faces at all.
the ending with chip trying to draw a circle is just so relatable-
“The sketch is better than the actual drawing”
I felt that. Cause most my drawings do that
you forgot: "When you show your highly skilled artist friends your artwork and they ignore it"
@MGM33 YotYot i mean...sometimes it's just hard to find stuff to say?
I get drawings shown to me on discord that look as if a toddler drew them but i have no balls to tell them they suck, even if they just started drawing.
Sometimes it's better to just get positive feedback, it's the safest way around when you don't know how someone handles criticism.
@@alexgade4512 if they can't handle criticism then they shalt be no artist lmao, art is about yourself, fuq how other peopke think)
@@reeemaximus2380 people just take criticism as instant insults. They don't understand that criticism is there to help them grow.
But honestly many people just go "lol wtf is this" and consider it criticism.
Other peoples opinions are good to consider, but only if the criticism is constructive.
All artists need is that little “ oh its great! “.
Or your skilled artists friends criticize your style instead of techniques.
Or they just tell you that your style sucks because you refuse to draw anime.
Chipflake: you can only draw humans or furries never both
Also Chipflake: The one who just drew both

always being scared of looking at ur sketch because it makes u cringe
#31.
People telling you not to waste your talent on drawing in this style and instead draw in this style (I get this a lot from my parents saying I should stop drawing my own characters with my art style and should instead do realism)
Number 31 : you procrastinate a lot and when you are back at art, you suck and so you procrastinate even more till you're drawing like when you starded.
just took a few months' break from art and ran into this exact problem... feels like I've regressed several years
@@ajzira8319 ikr now i suck more than normal.... Welp here we go again.
For me personally I realized. If I want to get back to draw, I better start with something simple. Like just one character in a simple pose or something like that. It's a good way to get the flow back for me and getting to something more bigger

Let's not forget that moment when our brain gets so excited and inspired with an idea and literally lose it all after going to the bathroom

This happens to me everyday!
I hate that, I hate that so much.

When i show my art to my friends:
"Weres the nose?"
"Why are the eyes so big?"
"One arm is longer than the other"
"Who is that?"
my friend is like:
thats bendy.
when my eyes are just cylinders
Edit: now i just search chipflake in google and use the eyes as a ref image, BUT IT STILL DOSENT LOOK LIKE BENDY
This is basically my mom too
I don’t draw noses on humans only animals
“Is that a Pokémon?”
One time i drew Bendy and my friend asked me where the eyelashes were. I told her that he doesn’t have any eyelashes. this FRICKING GIRL took her pencil and drew eyelashes on MY drawing! Seriously you can’t just draw on someone else’s drawing that’s really disrespectful!
this is so unbelievably accurate to my life right now
I have the opposit of problem 2 everything I draw (7nless I’m purposefully copying someone’s style for practice) turns into a literal demon that should never be summoned
When he said "your sketch always looks better than the finished piece"

Art struggles
31. When you forget to flip the canvas while drawing. So when you do flip it at the end, you wish you never flipped it in the first place.

There's also when you get art block on everyday EXCEPT for the day where you aren't busy
Not an Artist but an average-skilled programmer.
Seeing some similarities there, especially for the imposter syndrome.
writing shaders when your standards are AAA quality be like
@@TorutheRedFox AAA quality doesn't look great, don't work on games that are supposed to look realistic (they look so gross).
to specify I mean like 2000s AAA quality
back when games exaggerated things
especially Need for Speed Most Wanted and Colin McRae DiRT
it is *an* art though, like that thing that donald knuth said (apparantly, ive not read it)
"i've only *proved* the above code correct, but i've not tested it" (the art of computer programming) (i'm an artist) like i went to an exhibition of leonardo da vinci's art and the guide said that leonardo literally would not have understood the distinction between 'art' and 'science' because 'art' is derived from a word for 'skill' and 'science' is derived from one meaning 'knowledge' and you need both together.
"you can't draw backgrounds so you only ever draw headshots and full bodies with a two-tone background and a drop shadow"
i feel called out
I try to draw backgrounds but don't like to take risks with art in fear of it looking bad, so I never improve. I just draw some grass and maybe a tree with a watercolor brush and call it day.
I just started backgrounds and this still sounds like a bad idea-

And then they show the whole family that one painting you did a while back which you hate
Except when your in an Asian family with most of your cousins draw better than you
Better than having your family members not even acknowledge that you know anything about art.
Whenever I give my dad a drawing he feels like he has to show EVERYONE
I remember my younger sibling asking me if I would draw Danny Phantom in their notebook so that they could show off my "talent" to their friends. I did what they asked, and was relieved to hear they all liked my garbage artwork. XD
"You can't draw cars"

Or when they know you are decent at drawing so they ask to see what you made when you have to hand it in, but you hate the final product so try to hide it from them
“You’re either only good at traditional or digital”
(WEEPS IN TRADITIONAL ARTIST DESPERATELY TRYING TO ANIMATE AND FAILING)
Traditional artist... drawing on phone is so small, it's hard tryna get a tablet but felt like I'm not good enough for a drawing tablet or if I even was gonna use it at all... coz I am quite lazy, doing art the usual way traditionally makes ne happy but learning digital and all the tools felt like a chore. So I am afraid if I got a tablet i wasnt gonna use it and will suck at it
Kitten Mimi I can’t use a tablet for the life of me. What I do is upload pictures of my traditional drawings then trace them on my phone in drawing apps

Same.
Yep same
Chip: says you can’t draw cars
Also chip: shows a car
Honorable mention. When you ask for advice but you either get ignored or the person thinks you're better than them. Even if you're not
Another one:
When you get somewhat known online you get happy but also worried about inflating your ego and becoming greedy
Ok now this is relatable. This happens to me soo much ;-;
aka *IMPOSTER SYNDROME*
Or feeling pressured into delivering more art of the same or higher quality which demotivates you to do anything at all.
I just thought of another one:
being able to only draw either females or males. never both.
-or maybe this is just a me problem lol-
I feel ya
I'm only just beginning to try to draw males
nope, not a "only me" thing. Same here
(how do I do tiddies? How do I make a female look like a female???????)
I can relate my males have weird hair and their face shapes are so feminine I could die
Nope, I have this problem too umu
Every femals I draw has almost no boobies. End of discussion xd
Wow.. That's.. That's just so accurate, I can't even describe how much. I like this and I agree with this completely
Well... i literally draw cars almost exclusively because I'm into car design... But some of these are seriously true, like the sketch one
This is litteraly my art "career" in the biggest nutshell to ever exist
Wait you have a *career?!*
@@Eni.Starfall it's his art "career"
Well at least you do something with it.
Me too
(@axolotl with a minigun !) Me too...
“You get art block 6 times a week”
Me: HA I get art block 10 times a week
24/7 99% of what i draw i havent finished and i started months to years ago, i really need to come back to drawing my terraria character though
I get art block never and just procrastinate.
My art block happens so often, sometimes lasting an entire month
I get art block everyday
@@macestarlet7464 same
number 29 is so me, i always sketch something and when i wanna do the final thing i think the sketch looks so much better than the final one
All of them are so true it actually hurts 🥲
"You can draw either humans or furries, never both."
I instantly died inside.
I can only draw furries too, never humans
Only furries
And I'm not liking your comment just to keep the balance.
@@UnkleSanik haha nice number
Well I can draw people as well, but they all look like they’re from animal crossing.
what if it is not a skill problem but you rather do not like to draw humans? XD
When someone says “why do you keep drawing that weird thing in the corner of your pictures?” When they notice your watermark
ikr, it's so someone doesn't steal
Omg i can't wait for that to happen once I have my water mark or something
It could be seen as a compliment, if they think it's integrated into it well? Idk
Tip! When drawing backgrounds or tricky perspectives, DRAW GRID LINES FOR THE FLOOR OF THE SCENE!! It helped me so much!
THIS. this is hands down the most accurate thing ever
[Insert comment on how damn relatable all of this is, but which will be just one of the million comments saying exactly this]
but u can be that guy who time travels before upload so dats better
Starsie the Rabbit u are too for me, I just got it five min. Ago
ngl I strongly relate to this lmao, but this isn't an excuse to stop improving and say all these stuff as excuses like I normally do, I'm starting to improve and thats my main goal with art and film.
Agreed
