Woah. 5 years ago I saw this video and tried to place myself in one of these sections, and I found myself at a one. I was around 11 years old. Now it’s 11 at night, I’m 16, and I’m so proud of myself to say that I’ve improved - even in the slightest way. I’m at a level four or five now, and I’m trying to push myself even further! Super cool to see how far I’ve come, this is more of a self indulgent post but damn is this awesome

If it's anatomy/poses you're struggling with, try drawing athletes (baseball is my favourite to use) or dancers. It's helped me at least.
It took me about 30 Years of training, to learn how to draw. keep working.
Yeah. That's what makes this video false.
Nikku4211 no it is just very simplified
Alrik Scyriel That's not the case because an art experience where you've been drawing for years yet it still looks like a drawing from a 4 year old actually disproves what the person in the video is saying. That's not simplified. Simplified is if you're addressing everything that is important. Pretending some people don't exist isn't simplification, it's not knowing or ignoring.
This video has been on my "watch later" list for 4 years.
Today I finally watched it.
Good to know I'm between levels 4 and 5.
Love your content
When I first watched this in 2016 I was definitely a 1. I remember being insanely impressed by the higher levels. Now I think I’m somewhere between 4 and 5 :’)
I say this because even though I don’t think my art is on the technical level of five, I do think that stylistically would sell? Like I think my art is good enough and my art style is good/unique enough that people would buy art, but it’s not perfect execution, and while the technique is pretty OK, I have issues especially with proportion, hands, and lighting. However I don’t think that these are bad enough things/that I am bad enough at these days that it would stop people from finding my appealing

A little tip for level two sketches! Pressing down you pencil can indeed help with bringing up the contrast of your work. However, it can also create a glossy, reflective quality in your drawing. I'd recommend getting some 6B or 8B pencils to color in darker areas, and rather than press harder you can try going over the same area multiple times (This covers the paper while adding minimal amounts of reflection)
is sketch here meaning it is done but looks like sketch OR does it mean it is meant to be erased and replaced by the actual thing?
I assume the 2nd meaning
I press lightly because i need to erase, if i press harder i cannot
@@aykarainthey were referring to finished grayscale drawings where people press their pencil down harder to make it appear like a darker color

The tip that helped me the most over the years was flipping ur drawing. As soon as i stared doing it my art became a lot better
Hey random artists! Just a tip on eyes:
-When drawing eyes, don't draw one eye, then the other. Instead, draw both eyes simultaneously by working on a certain part of the eye on one side, then do it on the other side copying the first.
Hope this helps

Ellen Sacco HOW DO WE DO THIS
*_Digital artist laugh in symmetry tool_*
@@jfduug4994
It actually depends if you are drawing a living or inanimate thing
Like if it is a humans or animals you don't have to make it symmetrical
But if it's something inanimate like a building or a box try to keep sketching inanimate objects around your house and eventually you'll get enough muscle memory to draw symmetrical without thinking
@@jfduug4994
Sorry for my horrible grammar cause English isn't my first language
Quick trick: when drawing digitally, draw the character straight on (if going completely symmetrical) like you would normally. Make a layer above that, and make a black box that covers half of the character. move the box left and right to see which side you prefer. Then slide the box over which side you *don't* like, select the box, delete the box layer, and then erase (or cut) the line art within your selection.
Then select the other half (the side you liked), duplicate it, (copy and paste) flip it horozontally, move it to where it needs to be...then merge them together.
bam. Perfect Symmetry. (some programs have a symmetry function in them, and if yours do, then for the love of god use that.)
However, in every other angle, (that isn't "head on" or "facing the audience") perfect symmetry is useless and can make it feel unnatural. if drawing human figures, learn how perspective affects the various body parts, and use "arcs" (or half circles) to keep your limbs proportional, even when in a pose or in perspective. Facial features also line up on arcs rather than pure symmetry, which helps you a lot more when tilting the head in *any* direction.

i think you should focus on the simplest anatomy before anything else (personnally i still aint got this right), THEN focus on the lighting, then on the coloring. 3 years ago i was trying real hard to improve my level 1 art to LITERALLY ANY LEVEL, i never tried coloring before this year and after watching my dozens of anime and disney movies, i got coloring right ! i also got shading right ! and creativity radiates from me like for real:) so really u just need to focus on one thing at a time ! and choose a style thats really easy for you ! try to make line arts w no color to improve anatomy, make it all with references! try drawing a simple curtain or a skirt with its shades and lights to practice where you place ur lights ! for COLORING man idk how i got it right, try using coloring pencils to get back to the base of coloring ! and shading doesn't always have to be gray w colors! thats the only advice i can give u ! im not a professional AT ALL but my art isn't trash and you're definitely not a professional but your art isn't level 1 ! dont give up boo ! keep drawing !

I remember seeing this when it first came out, when I was about 11. I even submitted a few of my first ever digital pieces to a ranking stream where I think I was evaluated as a level 2. Now I solidly believe my work is at least a 4 bordering on 5 after years of continual practice, and it's surreal. It's genuinely so heartwarming and I sometimes imagine showing my younger self some of my newer pieces and imagining her absolute shock as she tries to comprehend that she grows up to be the person that drew that.
Watching really great artists do speed-draw videos is a great learning tool. Seeing a blank paper turn into a jumble of lines, a sketch figure, then a wire-frame body, then seeing it being fleshed out and clothing added, then colored, shaded, and tweaked until it's a finished masterpiece- it's just a mind blowing high speed education. For a lower level artist, you can immediately see where you can improve or what steps you've been skipping or glossing over. So many learning artists tend to do the finished outline first and then try to fill in the hole. An experienced artist does it the other way around, and it takes seeing it to really get it.
I fear no man, but that THING...

Level 1 artists mostly use one kind of brush, as soon as you start using multiple brushes you know you're improving
I kind of found this to be the opposite for myself lol
Going back many many years ago when I was in Highschool I took a drawing class, I was pretty good with my work back then, I'm far better now then I was but what I noticed in that class as it wasn't like an official pro drawing class is that when other class mates looked at my work and when the teacher used some of my drawings as good examples many of them came up to me and was telling me how to be as good as I was and how to do it, and after giving a few of them the tips I used at the time.. I knew I wasn't anywhere close to a pro but I wanted to help out but they would still struggle, some got it but what I noticed is a lot of students didn't know it takes time to improve whereas a lot of these students wanted to get better overnight and they learnt the hard way.
A lot of new people starting in learning to draw what to get better quick and when they don't they likely give up.. Drawing is just like any other subject.. you need to learn and view the project, break it down and learn how things work before taking the final exam. It's easy for me cause I've learnt how things look like, by all means I learnt everything, I am always learning something new but when someone looks at a parkbench they see... well a park bench.. but when I look at it I am thinking.. ok that's the perspective, sizes of the wood, light and shadows *takes a metal snapshot*
For anyone who drivers a manual transmission car it's just like drawing, once you know the sound of the engine and when to change gears your mind and hand does it automatically for you.. that... that is what drawing is like when you learned a lot. Here are some of my tips that may or may not help... lol
- Don't give up! If you are gonna give up very quick then think about why you want to draw.
- If you figured out a awesome technique then draw them.. step by step so you can go back to it and or improve on them.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes, idea is not to remove or bin your mistakes.. KEEP THEM! They are a good reminder on what you failed at and to ensure you learn from them, not only that it's a good way to look back when you improve yourself over time.
- You don't need the best materials to draw. Just a pencil and paper.
- Research art! It is fine to get inspired and even copy other peoples art but only for learning tho.. but never copy someone else's work and pass it off as your own.
- Watch Tutorials and detailed step by step. Look don't be that lone wolf wanting to do everything themselves without ever needing help, there is only so much you can do alone, if you don't use tutorials and or references then you can't improve.. you'll get to the point where you can't improve cause you can't compare it to others to find out what you are doing wrong.
- Ask for help, other people, family and or anyone you know that may have drawing skills.
- Start basic, don't start your drawing with the end result of being a huge high detailed art piece only to either give up or upset as it wasn't how you expected it to be.. start basic, learn to improve and then slowly create bigger and bigger with more detailed art pieces.
- Ask for peoples thoughts about your work. Now when you do this expect people to look down and or say pretty bad stuff about art.. it's just how people are but ignore them, stand strong and always aim to become better.
- If you get frustrated then take a break.

Dude, jump on Udemy and get the Digitally Painting Color and Light course by Austin Batchelor. You definitely will understand light and color after that. If you've never been on the site, it's 12 bucks to purchase the course. You can also wait until it goes on sale again.
help me with anatomy ill help you with colours
Omg sameeeee😂
i can feel you.. maybe becaause Iam used to draw with inks and pen.
See now it's kinda weird because at every level there are pictures where I'm like "I'm a million times better then that" and others on the same level like "That gonna take me a long ass time"
Yes, in my mind, she isn't objective by choosing the pictures.
And all the pictures made on pc or mobile - the app can do some shadows and highlight, so: why are you talking about coloring - I mean - jeah, do some art with pencil and paper"

I love revisiting this video every few years to see what my art level is at. Since I first found this video 6ish years ago, my art has progressed from a 3 to a 5, which I'm quite proud of.

Socia Lips nope I'm pretty much the same. I think my art is generally a level 3 though I hav some level 2 art but my school artwork is level 4. But my school work does take a LONG time to do and it's quite detailed. I once stayed up till 3 finishing a piece 0_0

So I've came back to this video to check on my art level since I'm about to go into senior high, studying in an art school. I wanna know how much I've improved and omfg I'm crying.
From a level 2 when this video came out, to a level 5 bordering level 6. The fact that I struggled practicing so badly the years prior, and realizing how much those times have changed my art so much just makes me wanna cry. Been experiencing an art burnout for so long, but seeing that I've even improved during those times is just a massive boost of motivation for me.
I'm conflicted because school has greatly improved my art, yet nearly destroyed my love for it. I'm just hoping that I'd regain that love for it again as I once did back in elementary, but seeing my improvement just helps with that *a lot* :")
I’ve been watching this every now and then for the past few years and it’s great to look back at how I’ve grown in levels!
Sometimes I'm at 2 sometimes I'm at 5

I feel your pain
CitrusFenno same, sometimes I'm at 1-2 and sometimes I'm at 4-5
same oml
CitrusFenno same
CitrusFenno me at level six:
WHA-HOW-WHY-GAH WHAT IS THIS, MAGIC?!?!
The problems you can have:
Level one:
-you usually spend a lot of time on your art
-the lines on your drawing aren't as confident as a level two artist
-held back by anatomy and shape
-the coloring is scribbled in fill for traditional art, in digital art there's white gaps or pixellated edges
Recommended drawing programs: FireAlpaca and Krita (they're both free)
*Keep drawing for fun, draw things you like and you will automatically get the experience you need to reach level two.*
Level two:
-lines and colors are cleaner than level one
-shading is imprecise
-anatomy and shape problems
-boxy feeling
-trying shades
-sketches aren't strong
Level three:
-rarely has issues with line
-pose might be awkward and unnatural
-maybe inbalance in the character's symmetry (flip picture to see if it's ungood (it's hell))
-shape can be off
*Even if you draw cartoons, you need to practice anatomy and shapes from real life*
-you should start paying attention on composition
Level four:
-if there's anatomy/shape problems, they are unnoticeable
-solid composition; rarely useless space
-some pieces will be well composed
The drawing can be very simple.
*Improve your art skill you have two options: formal or informal training. [...] Read a book. Do life drawings. Look for classes by artist who have been working professionally for more than ten years*
Level five:
-probably anatomy problems
-could have more defined light and shadow contrast
Level six:
She can't help you and I cannot either, it's just perfecto
Thanks for making this very helpful video, I going too look up at this channel!
Don't forget guys, never give up your art! ^w^
When you can't even draw a stickman
@@pillow1557 Try it, you will be suprised how easy it is to draw a stickman
@@pillow1557 no one can draw a stickman if they never try. If great artists gave up before they could even start there would be no good art. Art is not something someone is magically either good at or not good at. It's a learning process. You wouldn't expect someone to be good at math if they never learned how to add, why would it be any different with drawing?
I'm a 3
Me: Oh, I must be level 2...

When I found this video waaaay back in 2017 I had just started drawing. I was certainly a level 1-2 but I always tried to convince myself I was a level 3 lmao. I've been revisiting this vid every few months/years. Nowadays, 6 years and 1 (hopefully 2 in some weeks) concept art JOBS later, I'm a level 5, maybe level 6 in some pieces if I put enough effort, and this is one of my favorite videos of all time. Thank you. Sincerely, some internet rando.
OH my God when I first watched this video, I thought I was for sure level 3 (probably in 2017.) Now I'm looking at my new art, and I think I'm a level 5 or 6 for some of my best pieces. I'm totally shocked, I'm just so proud of myself and how far I've come. I've even started selling my art, teaching at a local studio, and gotten accepted to a college. Thanks so much for inspiring young me :)
I love how you made constructive criticism for lower levels without putting anyone on blast

@@franknfurter5336 you will for sure! Practise makes perfect ^^
On top of being super helpful by giving me an easy way to quantify my skill, (something that is VERY hard to find for art), this video has done something entirely unexpected- given me motivation! I seem to be between 4 and 5, which is gratifying enough to give me the boost I needed today to go draw something!

I remember the days when my art was in the 1-2 range. I would see beautiful drawings other people did and I aspired to become just as good as they are. Here I am seven years later with a 5-6 level skillset. For anyone who is just starting out, never give up. Draw as much as possible and give it time. Improving doesn't come quickly and that's perfectly fine. You will get there :)
Furrŕrdrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
*sniff* I needed to hear that, thank you
damn well done my guy :)
i also know that drawing improves over time... because... well... *looks over my bad old art using only circle heads*.... yeah.
Imagine in another 7 years, maybe exceeding level 7 or 8
Sometimes I think about little me 7-8 years ago drawing paw patrol characters & making warrior cats ocs and dreaming about having good art like the youtubers I watched at the time and here I am today, an adult, with a level 4 mindset, an actual tablet with a screen (albeit being an android tablet, still a huge step up from my pad tablet of years past).
I don’t make traditional art in the sense of like fully finished art with blooming colors and crazy realistic parts, mine is either b&w or using more faded colors and every time I try to finish something I make into a smooth colored piece I get so discouraged and usually give up. My finished pieces are always sketchy in some form since my style favors it & just looks off with smooth lineart. Weirdly though I take most of my inspiration from hanna barbera cartoons which are pretty smooth in looks
Anyway, I’m not sure where I’m going with this, I’m very proud of myself for how far I’ve come since then and I love my art style since it’s unique and I wouldn’t trade what I make for smooth brightly colored art. But I’m still insecure about it since a lot of people believe the latter to be “good”, and sketchy grayscale art to be “bad”. One of my mom’s friends has a kid who makes seriously incredible hyper realistic art and when I was a bit younger, around 4 years ago, making my cartoons she would always compare what I made to her and it really ruined my outlook and will to keep making art. If art and drawing weren’t outlets to get my emotions out I would’ve definitely given up because I felt I HAD to make a certain kind of art for it to be good. Luckily I didn’t and here I am now :)
What kind of art do you make if I can ask? Like what style do you primarily have?
I’ve been considering biting the metaphorical bullet and setting up a deviantart or something to post mine since I don’t share it and I’d love to make more art friends
Every couple of months I will come back to this video to see if I've improved at all or relate to any of the higher levels, this is my third time watching it
I'm back- and I think I've definitely improved, I think I'm around a level 2, on the cusp of level 3

questions or feature me,
do you do more full drawings rather than bust drawings
do you still do digital paintings or have you switched it up
and do you still draw fanart more than oc art?
When you still don’t know in what level you are...
Wiwita haha me too I can’t decide which one
i'm level 1 or 2 idk... ;v; atleast i do something...
Wiwita When you know how to make a drawing better than everything in the level, that’s how you know you’re above it.
If you know you could make some of the drawinga of a level, that’s how you know you’re close to leveling up.

One of the things that helps is to redraw old art, to clearly see how far you’ve come helps motivate me
It's been years now since I've first commented. I can now confidently say my work is a solid level 5 when it comes to illustration. The struggle is trying to improve my work so I can break through to level 6. Going to art school, taking online art courses and sharpening my fundamentals are the steps I've been taking to hopefully get me there.
