-When drawing eyes, don't draw one eye, then the other. Instead, draw both eyes simultaneously by working on a certain part of the eye on one side, then do it on the other side copying the first.

i think you should focus on the simplest anatomy before anything else (personnally i still aint got this right), THEN focus on the lighting, then on the coloring. 3 years ago i was trying real hard to improve my level 1 art to LITERALLY ANY LEVEL, i never tried coloring before this year and after watching my dozens of anime and disney movies, i got coloring right ! i also got shading right ! and creativity radiates from me like for real:) so really u just need to focus on one thing at a time ! and choose a style thats really easy for you ! try to make line arts w no color to improve anatomy, make it all with references! try drawing a simple curtain or a skirt with its shades and lights to practice where you place ur lights ! for COLORING man idk how i got it right, try using coloring pencils to get back to the base of coloring ! and shading doesn't always have to be gray w colors! thats the only advice i can give u ! im not a professional AT ALL but my art isn't trash and you're definitely not a professional but your art isn't level 1 ! dont give up boo ! keep drawing !

    The problems you can have:
    Level one:
-you usually spend a lot of time on your art
-the lines on your drawing aren't as confident as a level two artist
-held back by anatomy and shape
-the coloring is scribbled in fill for traditional art, in digital art there's white gaps or pixellated edges
Recommended drawing programs: FireAlpaca and Krita (they're both free)
*Keep drawing for fun, draw things you like and you will automatically get the experience you need to reach level two.*
    Level two:
-lines and colors are cleaner than level one
    -shading is imprecise
    -anatomy and shape problems
    -boxy feeling
    -trying shades
    -sketches aren't strong
    Level three:
    -rarely has issues with line
-pose might be awkward and unnatural
-maybe inbalance in the character's symmetry (flip picture to see if it's ungood (it's hell))
    -shape can be off
*Even if you draw cartoons, you need to practice anatomy and shapes from real life*
-you should start paying attention on composition
    Level four:
-if there's anatomy/shape problems, they are unnoticeable
    -solid composition; rarely useless space
-some pieces will be well composed
The drawing can be very simple.
*Improve your art skill you have two options: formal or informal training. [...] Read a book. Do life drawings. Look for classes by artist who have been working professionally for more than ten years*
    Level five:
    -probably anatomy problems
-could have more defined light and shadow contrast
    Level six:
She can't help you and I cannot either, it's just perfecto
Thanks for making this very helpful video, I going too look up at this channel!
Don't forget guys, never give up your art! ^w^

Sometimes I think about little me 7-8 years ago drawing paw patrol characters & making warrior cats ocs and dreaming about having good art like the youtubers I watched at the time and here I am today, an adult, with a level 4 mindset, an actual tablet with a screen (albeit being an android tablet, still a huge step up from my pad tablet of years past).
I don’t make traditional art in the sense of like fully finished art with blooming colors and crazy realistic parts, mine is either b&w or using more faded colors and every time I try to finish something I make into a smooth colored piece I get so discouraged and usually give up. My finished pieces are always sketchy in some form since my style favors it & just looks off with smooth lineart. Weirdly though I take most of my inspiration from hanna barbera cartoons which are pretty smooth in looks
Anyway, I’m not sure where I’m going with this, I’m very proud of myself for how far I’ve come since then and I love my art style since it’s unique and I wouldn’t trade what I make for smooth brightly colored art. But I’m still insecure about it since a lot of people believe the latter to be “good”, and sketchy grayscale art to be “bad”. One of my mom’s friends has a kid who makes seriously incredible hyper realistic art and when I was a bit younger, around 4 years ago, making my cartoons she would always compare what I made to her and it really ruined my outlook and will to keep making art. If art and drawing weren’t outlets to get my emotions out I would’ve definitely given up because I felt I HAD to make a certain kind of art for it to be good. Luckily I didn’t and here I am now :)
What kind of art do you make if I can ask? Like what style do you primarily have?
I’ve been considering biting the metaphorical bullet and setting up a deviantart or something to post mine since I don’t share it and I’d love to make more art friends

Quick trick: when drawing digitally, draw the character straight on (if going completely symmetrical) like you would normally. Make a layer above that, and make a black box that covers half of the character. move the box left and right to see which side you prefer. Then slide the box over which side you *don't* like, select the box, delete the box layer, and then erase (or cut) the line art within your selection.
Then select the other half (the side you liked), duplicate it, (copy and paste) flip it horozontally, move it to where it needs to be...then merge them together.
bam. Perfect Symmetry. (some programs have a symmetry function in them, and if yours do, then for the love of god use that.)
However, in every other angle, (that isn't "head on" or "facing the audience") perfect symmetry is useless and can make it feel unnatural. if drawing human figures, learn how perspective affects the various body parts, and use "arcs" (or half circles) to keep your limbs proportional, even when in a pose or in perspective. Facial features also line up on arcs rather than pure symmetry, which helps you a lot more when tilting the head in *any* direction.

I remember watching this in 2016 where my art was probably around level 1-2. I felt really bad about being scored low, but really motivated to do better. almost 4 years later I can somewhat confidently say I'm a level 4 artist.
EDIT: It's January 2022. I'm going to Uni this year to study visual effects and entertainment design. I would probably say my art is level 6; with some elements of level 5. I am so proud of myself for my improvements and I only hope I keep getting better. Please don't give up. I've seen a lot of "but I'll never Improve" or "I've been drawing for over xyz years and I'm still not good!". I used to be there when I was much younger. I was sure that I was never going to improve but I stuck through it, worked harder than I ever did before and didn't lower my dreams of what I someday wanted to be. You will get there. It might take a decade. It might take an overwhelming amount of learning and practice but you will get there if you don't give up.

@ everyone who is saying they are at a lower level/saying they suck at drawing:
Congrats! You created something. You took the time to put pen to paper (or stylus to tablet) and created a piece of art. You created a character, a place, an object, a story. That's incredible.
You took your feelings and brought them to life. You took a thought, a sound, a texture, and turned it into something people could look at. Not a lot of people can do that!
So if you created something today, congratulations! You've added something to the world. In another universe, this character, place, object you put on paper today now exists.
So don't ever say your art "sucks". Because if it came from your heart, it's amazing.
That being said, criticism isn't the same as hate. Those who give you helpful, constructive criticism are experienced in what they are doing. They know how it feels to bring a feeling to life. And they want to help you bring yours to life as well.
That's why, don't ever get discouraged. Always keep creating art. If you don't think your art is worth it, you're wrong. It's worth it, because it came from you.
But the stronger your art becomes, the more your thoughts will radiate off the paper. The more you practice, the more your art will come to life. Creating something knew feels great. And having that feeling constantly grow stronger? It's incredible.
So keep drawing. Keep painting. Keep animating. Keep doing whatever you're doing because you have the power to take something imaginary and make it reality.
    We believe in you!

LeslieLu Marie's hair tutorial is pretty good for anime / decently detailed hair, hope this helps^^

A little tip for level two sketches! Pressing down you pencil can indeed help with bringing up the contrast of your work. However, it can also create a glossy, reflective quality in your drawing. I'd recommend getting some 6B or 8B pencils to color in darker areas, and rather than press harder you can try going over the same area multiple times (This covers the paper while adding minimal amounts of reflection)

Everyone is talking down below about how "bad" their art is. It's not. Listen, Levels 1 and 2, your art is NOT bad. You simply need to improve it. take a step back and say "what can I do to make this better?" And then do it. Look, you're not gonna learn how to draw in a day- or a year for that matter. It takes dedication and practice. I've been taking art seriously for 5 years, and even then, I'm still only a level 4 or 5. It will take a while. All you need to do right now is focus on learning and observing. If you need help with this, I've made a sort of checklist to help you.
    Step 1: Anatomy
This will take you FOREVER to fully understand and draw. heck, I'm still struggling with it. It's best to start figuring it out asap. Trace images online to help you or try to copy them. What you need to focus on to help you learn are these:
    - Limb length
    - Placement of joints
    - Bones (drawing skeletons really helps)
When tracing, think of these things. Experiment with them often and draw without tracing to help better your understanding of how it all works. If you don't want to trace, take a reference photo and try to copy it. This sounds hard, and it will be at first. However, if this is the way you want to do it, make sure you take note of the same thing as above so when you need to improvise, the drawing will still make sense.
    Step 2: Coloration
Like what Crowne Prince said, it's highly recommended that you use colors that compliment each other. What I mean by that is this: Orange and blue are opposites, so they look very, VERY harsh together. However, blue and either red or yellow are (slightly) softer and more pleasing to look at. The best two combinations, however, would be blue and either purple or green. This is because they are right next to each other on a color wheel. Look up Color Theory to learn more, but in a nutshell, it's this:
    - Opposite colors look harsh when put together (blue+orange, green+red, purple+yellow)
    - Cool colors (green, blue, purple) look good to make a calm piece
    - Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) look good to make an action or eventful piece
    - Neutral colors (black, white, brown) go well with basically all of them
By putting complimentary colors together, you make a piece that's both easy to look at and easy to understand. You can, however, use something like purple and yellow together to reinforce the oddities or importance of a certain detail (Yellow cat fur, purple eyes). Putting big chunks of these colors together is a risky move, so be cautious while doing it.
    Step 3: Shading & Lighting
DO NOT TREAT THESE TWO LIKE THEY ARE THE SAME THING! There are differences between them, and they will affect the look and feel of your drawing differently.
    -Similarities between both-
Both shading and lighting will make your drawing pop off the page. All you really need to know is where your *light source* is and how the *anatomy* works. For tips on anatomy, see Step 1. Your *light source* is the single point of light your subject will be in. If you're a beginner, refrain from drawing things like multiple spotlights for right now. The light source will determine how and where the shading and lighting will be. If it's behind the subject, the shadows will be visible all over the character. If it's to the side, the shadows will be opposite the light source and the lighting will be more toward it. Both will follow the movements of your subject, which is where anatomy comes in. Now, let's dive deeper into each.
    -Shading-
Shading isn't too much to learn. If you've got anatomy nailed down, this should be a bit easier since you know how the body moves. First off, please, PLEASE avoid using black or grey shading. This color will make your drawing look flat and not so lifelike. A good technique for shading is using the complimentary color (the harsh ones that look bad together) to do this. LEMME EXPLAIN. These colors look bad when they're al full, high opacities. HOWEVER: shading is usually on lower opacity, making them look kinda nice. Also: (depending on the piece, of course) going closer to the color black (but again not grey or pure black) is a nice way to do it. Example: the Detroit Lions colors, orange and blue, are pretty harsh together, right? Well, when drawing their tiger logo, the color used to shade is commonly blue! The color makes the base colors stand out and really brings it to life. Another technique (the one I use) is to take the current color, make it darker, and then add more color in. This means that the base color will need to have some grey in it, but trust me, the results look amazing.
    -Lighting-
Lighting, again, follows the subject's anatomy, however much more loosely. This means that there will be less lighting than shading in your piece (usually, every piece is different). You want to make sure you know how the subject moves (which means that if you were to spin the character around 360, you'd never have the shading move unless the lighting is moving as well. Practicing shading and lighting with both these techniques is a good way to study both anatomy and s + l). Example: Shading usually goes under the cheeks of a character, and the lighting usually comes to a stop in a central dot (no matter how big) on the part of said cheek closest to the light source. Again, every drawing is different, but generically speaking, the lighting will only highlight either the most important parts of a character or the part of the character facing the light source. A good piece will often combine the two to create something that looks very natural and often realistic.
    Step 4: Texture
This is one I'm still experimenting with myself, but from what I've seen and tried, texture needs to not only look appropriate on a subject but also needs to be well shaded and lighted so the viewer knows where the attention should be- where the artist PUT the attention. Here's what I mean. If your character has fur, you want to make sure that the viewer can clearly see the fur and what it should feel like- rough or soft, gnarly or straight, etc. If you choose not to put fur, however, that's fine so long as the less important things in an image DON'T have texture. If they do, the drawing will feel odd, like we should be focusing on the background more. I mean, unless that's what you want. Here are some important things to watch out for:
    - Texturize the most important thing in your image the most above all else
    - Make sure the texture fits (a messy cat's fur will not be straight)
    - If you're drawing with line art, make sure you plan ahead with your sketch what all needs to happen so you won't need to go back and edit
    - Make sure your shading and lighting also follow the flow of the texture (rocks are hard in this sense)
Texture will take a long, LONG time to master. Like I said, I've been goin' for years and even I'm still figuring it out. Look at reference pictures with the same or similar textures and see how it flows there and try to either copy it or apply it. Seriously, reference photos are HUGE. I attended a three-week, twice-a-week college class with a pretty darn good artist (he does photo realism) and he used reference photos for. EVERYTHING. I'm learnin' why: they're SUPER useful, especially for textures. Use them often- they're what'll save you from a massive headache later on, if not now.
    Step 5: Practicing and Critiquing
Practice drawing all the time. Try doing different animals in different positions, or if that's not what you want to learn, do what you want. However, there are a couple of tricks you can use to help yourself.
    - Sketch everyday things around you over and over to get the feel of them
    - Practice drawing random people just walking by you. this forces you to draw fast and still comprehend how they move
    - Sketch the same thing over and over until you nail it
    - Watch speedpaint videos and tutorials (take what you see there, critique it, and apply it to your own art)
    - After completing a piece, step back and ask "What can I do to make this better?" and apply it to your NEXT piece
Sketching every day all the time is what really got me going to where I am now. A flower, a bee, your neighbor, anything. Study that thing and learn how it moves, how the shadows and light fall onto it, the anatomy, and of course the coloration. By watching speedpaints and art tutorials, you can learn from other people who are already good and apply the same tactics they use. need help finding some good ones? Search up Artyjoyful, WalkingmelonsAAA, Arron Blaise, and that one person who made a realistic Santa Clause on FREAKIN MS PAINT. Those guys are all good examples of incredible artists who know what they're doing. Now that you've got a video, don't just watch it or jam out to the song playing in the background- study it. "Why did they leave that part unshaded? What's with that tiny almost unnoticeable dot on their nose? Why didn't they add color to that spot?" Now that you've started really looking at what they're doing, critique it. "Well, I don't like that one blank spot (it was probably a mistake), so I'll make sure that my own art doesn't leave any large holes like that. And that dot on their nose helps really bring out how strong the lighting is, and I like it, so I'll apply it to my own art." Then actually apply it and boom. You're already improving. Do you live in a house with stairs in it? How many are there? can't answer? Well, that's because you've seen the world around you but not observed it. Count those stairs (there's 12 in my house going upstairs, 15 going down). Do this with art as well. Try to take in every detail and replicate it. THIS DOESN'T MEAN ADD EVERY HAIR ON A PERSON'S HEAD. Try to texturize it so the viewer knows those strands are there but you don't have to go through the agonizing pain of drawing every single one. Do this with reference photos and speedpaint as well.

PJ P No. No one ever, EVER masters art. There is always more to learn. So, by applying your logic of “needs improvement, is bad” that means that no art is good.
Just because it can be improved doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Take me for example. I’d call myself at least a fairly good artist, and yet, I can see all the places I need to work on (feet, clothing wrinkles, glass, backgrounds in general). You have your own opinion, but my art isn’t completely terrible, is it?
No art is bad, nor is an artist considered bad at what they do. I all depends on how much experience they have, how much they are willing to improve, and how far they are willing to push themselves to ge there. All those Level 6s? They have serious self discipline. Levels 1 and 2 are either beginners or don’t want to push themselves to improve. It’s all about experience, not how “good” or “bad” art is.

    • @yishunnnn
      @yishunnnn 6 років тому +10

Dimonds 456 oh, i'm not trying to be rude either. well, first of all, you seem to have a problem with anatomy. the hand aren't quite right, or sometimes the head is too big, or the arm or too long etc or the faces aren't quite symmetric. also, the positions of your characters are quite stiff looking. moreover, your compositions lack details; either it is clothes, background, hair etc..which makes the overall composition look simple. also, the shading/coloring; even if your colors complements each other, they are too mmmh bright? like, it isn't really pleasant to look only at primary colors and such. Maybe you should try to use more varieties of colors which are less bright, and also try to not only shade with one single color.
moreover, we don't really know if you're aiming for a 2D cartoonish art style or a 3D one. that's because you use too much airbrush but then the lack of depth breaks the 3D feeling.
      of course, i'm just being objective, and mainly biased on this video; I gave your level comparing the compositions of this list. And that's how i found some similar mistakes level 2-3 artists make; most of the time, lack of consistency. ( i would say your art looks a lot like (not in terms of art style ofc) : 2:59 ; anonymous / 4:20 ; DeviantKeyBrian / 4:42 ; Gosku3 / 4:46 ; Hayden R / 5:47 ; NightClaw / 6:48 ; Bokkunthedrawperso / 7:14 ; Fliksie & Frostedscales / 8:52 ; MelloChello195 / 9:29 ; ScribblePen / 9:34 ; Sleepy-Sheepy-Wolf / 9:54 ; Tori M / 10:01 ; Waterfallandthegang )

Illustration is finalizing a still image of something and putting effort in a scene, animation is putting images to 'fake' movement. You may want to be a good illustrator if you want your animation to look a certain way but the worst illustrator could make a beautiful animation just for the fluidity of it alone.

i can almost hear the angry artists screaming HOW DARE YOU RATE MY ART now
also i watched this a year ago: level 3
now: level 5 depending on how much effort i put in and how well drawn the reference i'm drawing from is. i got way better at anatomy and posing, plus shading practice.

More people should see this comment. Someone who improved from a 3 to a 5 over the course of a year. You should post some new and older art Yuanyuan. I too have improved in the last year and a half. From about a 4 to a 5.

OH my God when I first watched this video, I thought I was for sure level 3 (probably in 2017.) Now I'm looking at my new art, and I think I'm a level 5 or 6 for some of my best pieces. I'm totally shocked, I'm just so proud of myself and how far I've come. I've even started selling my art, teaching at a local studio, and gotten accepted to a college. Thanks so much for inspiring young me :)

Socia Lips nope I'm pretty much the same. I think my art is generally a level 3 though I hav some level 2 art but my school artwork is level 4. But my school work does take a LONG time to do and it's quite detailed. I once stayed up till 3 finishing a piece 0_0
