I got a recording of the first piece at the age of nine as a birthday present from my parents. Mr David Geringas is the soloist there. ❤️ Listening to those pieces helps me to get through the global Corona pandemic.

I heard Rostropovich play the Prokofiev Cello Concerto at Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, in fall of 1965--his first US concert! He was electrifying--I went out and bought everything he had ever recorded. It was doubly exciting because I was working for the Symphony at the time--went backstage and heard him speaking in French--he did not yet speak English. A happy wonderful memory.
Mstislav Rostropovich channels the gentleness, the subtle joy of melodic sound of harmony, grace and serenity in F. J. Haydn Cello Concertos. The orchestra as well gives a unique tone of velvety beauty! It is simply great to listen to Haydn's unique recording.

He was the cello hero of my youth and I admired his technique and that voluminous sound. Nowadays, he is still one of the greatest masters of that instrument.
People tend to think of classical eastern music to be mystical and spiritually uplifting. The sitar and sarod are certainly meditative, but Haydn has the power to directly and quickly change your entire mindset. I find when I listen to concertos such as this; I begin writing, speaking and studying with inspiration and attention, my burdens and worries diminish, my spirit becomes uplifted, the world becomes clearer and lighter and my mind becomes peaceful and filled with joy!

from Wikipedia: "He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a teacher of Beethoven"... that was like spot-on what I just experienced here with my first encounter with Haydn. wow :)
You've got well over 1000 other Haydn works to explore and there are hundreds of masterpieces in that ouvre. Too much is made of the relationship between Haydn and Mozart. There are too many throwaway remarks allegedly made by each to the other. I think the evidence suggest that Mozart was actually closer to Haydn's brother Michael. Haydn actually said that the one composer he could always learn from was CPE Bach. Haydn is a very great composer in his own right (the greatest in my opinion). He doesn't need references to other composers. He stands on his own record. He wrote so much fabulous music and developed or invented every classical music genre. It's a shame people these days don't recognise these fact. Many famous composers did.
