Geat job and you master the shoe patcher, i have the same shie patcher its a really cool machine and perfect for leather work you have raised my desire and inspiration for this art form, thank you.
Thank you Art. I find the machine has some trouble going through thick leather, and parts of this project were 6 layers think. I really should have a heavier machine but for the price you can't beat it. It took a bit of tweaking to get it working smoothy but I like the machine.
Thank you! The inside of the credit card pockets are made from dark brown nylon. There is a thin strip of pigskin on the inside of each opening to give it reinforcement. The nylon is sandwiched between the outer piece of vegetable tan leather and that pigskin strip. The nylon is thin but also quite strong. If I used anything else the whole thing becomes too bulky. I just cut a piece of nylon that looped from one opening to the next and was just long enough to allow the card to sit level with the opening (Sorry i didn't show that in the video). The sides of the pockets are just left open because it's unlikely anyone will put anything in there smaller than a card. But if they do it could fall down inside and you would probably not be able to get it out.
With vegetable tan leather this is a problem and I don't think it will ever go away. I don't like it, but it also gives it a bit of a rustic look. There's no way to avoid it because the underside of the foot has to pull the material through somehow, but if you're using chromium tanned leather it doesn't do that. A very expensive machine like the Cowboy CB4500 would not do this, but it also costs around $3000.
if you were to remove the bottom foot and sand it down a little (till the edges are smoother) it would greatly help to reduce those marks while still giving some grip. That is if you can't purchase a smooth foot for it.
Gracias.
Thanks. The needle is the same as a standard sewing consumer sewing machine, but it's a size 20 which can be tricky to find because most machines don't use a needle that big. I buy them on eBay from China. The thread is 92 lb polyester which I ordered from a company in North Carolina called The Thread Exchange.
HI Jim. I think it's called and Able 290 (Look it up on Facebook. There's a dealer in Australia if you need parts). But I found it on eBay selling for $265 new. Do a search under Chinese shoe patch machine and you'll see them. You can also check AliExpress.
Hi - Awesome videos - I’m getting lots of ideas and tips / techniques from watching your videos! I have a question about your brass letters / numbers - do you have a tip for what to do when you have a name or a set of initials that have repeat letters? I realize one could buy multiple sets of letters but that’s not very cost effective. Is there something you can do with blanks so you can come back and re-press the skipped letters? I ordered some letters from the company you used. Do they provide blanks?
Thanks Jonathan, I appreciate the compliment! I wish I had ordered multiples of these letters. I did order multiples of the vowels, but I should have gotten many more like "L", "R", "S", "P" etc. What I do is first use masking tape to hold the leather down to the table so it won't move. Then I clamp a piece of wood over the leather (you have to put small spacers under the wood at each end so you're not putting pressure on the actual leather). This piece of wood is my guide and I butt the brass letter holder right up against it. I then press in half of the name, change the letters and do the other half. I also put a piece of masking tape on the piece of wood and mark on it with a pencil the position of the letter press for the first half of the name and again for the second half. And when I do this I always practice on a scrap piece of leather until I have the spacing perfect, it is then a simple matter of moving that pice of wood over my actual project with the marks already on the masking tape showing the position of the press. So on your scrap piece do the first half of the name, change the letters, do the second half of the name and assess your work. Once you are satisfied with the spacing you can go to the actual project. I should also mention about the little brass stops inside the track where the letters go (the ones held in place with the Allen screws) - make sure one of them stays put so when you're changing letters your results will be consistent from the scrap leather to your project. If you loosen both of these stops you'll have to start all over again. I hope this makes sense but if not just message me again.
wm17959 I think I follow what you are saying - I almost wish they made and sold spacers for various letters. I will try to follow and practice. Btw, don’t know if you know this but there is a Chinese Leather Shoe Patcher Facebook page - you should request to join it - you could be a major contributor to it!
@@jonathancabelly5128 Thanks Jonathan, I'll look into that Facebook site. I suppose you could make your own spacers with 2 small pieces of hard leather, one slightly larger than the other made to fit inside that slot.
La máquina se hace en China. Se llama un Able 290. Usted puede buscar en eBay debajo de la máquina china del remiendo del zapato. Me gusta, pero no puede manejar cuero pesado. Bueno para carteras.
I WILL LOVE TO HAVE ONE HOW CAN I GET ONE ? IN YOUR REPLY TO MY COMMENT CAN YOU PLEASE ADD YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS SO THAT I CAN SEND MY REQUEST FOR A CATALOG TO ORDER FROM. I LOVE YOUR HAND WORK ELEGANT .BEAUTIFUL AND CLEAN PLEASE DO ME THAT FAVOR. THANKS
Мой электронный адрес wm17959(a)hotmail.com

The design and craftsmanship is amazing.
I hope you don't mind me asking, do you sell the template / pattern?
Hi Arthur. Sorry for the late reply. I don't have patterns but send me an email and I'll see if I can get you some dimensions. wm17959(a)hotmail.com

Hello!
I noticed the walking foot underside is ribbed and leaves a slight impression on the leather. Does the foot impressions ever go away?

love this wallet.....is that neatsfoot oil that you apply at the 15:15 mark.
Thank you, and yes, that's neatsfoot oil near the end.
What leather weight did you use for the outer part?
It's vegetable tan cowhide 1.5 to 2.5 oz. I buy the better quality leather.
Хорошая работа. Чем вы покрываете финишным покрытием?
В конце я просто применяю масло neatsfoot.
I noticed on the closure strap you put the large hole on the wrong side
You are correct... and very observant. I screwed up! :(
What is the name of the machine you use and where to buy from.....I like it
