Fantastic. Just watched the whole video and such impressive work. The lace cutting method is so clever. The freehand way you cut the recess for the stitching to sit in is so neat. Such an inspiring and educational video. Thank you for taking the time to film and share this.
Awesome. I love that rustic look, the leather strips used for stitching were such a perfect touch. Really great work. Thank your for sharing this video and showing us your skills. I appreciate your hard work.
try to call your videos different this helps you so many can see it. for example make a wallet with leather. very good job a greetings from Colombia South America
Thank you Chuck! The sewing machine isn't actually old. You can buy these on eBay from China and that's how they look. They're not very expensive either. I had to do a bit of tweaking to get it working perfectly, but it was worth it. I actually made the small square out of a larger one I bought at Canadian Tire for very little money. It's a nice practical size.
Thank you for the compliment! I didn't actually keep track of how long it took to make. I'm sure if I made another one it would go a lot faster. The pattern actually took most of the time.
Hi. I found the machine on eBay. They are made in China and they are all metal construction. You can look up 'shoe patch' machine or 'Able 290'. They are actually very reasonably priced, but they won't handle heavy leather. For something like this, or wallets they are nice.
Yea, it is a lot of work to punch all those holes, but I don't make many projects like this. I assume when you say drive punch you mean a machine of some sort and not hitting them with a hammer? I'm not familiar with such a machine although I did design and build one for myself - it just isn't finished.
wm17959 I did mean hitting them with a hammer, I notice you use one 20:28. It is a fantastic looking piece. Lol I'm in the process of adapting an arbour press to fit tandy drive punch bits. Would be good to see your machine when it's done. Love the lace cutter too. It's ingenious. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks John. I came up with that lace cutting idea. Not sure if anyone else is doing that. I also like the home made edging tool - I thought that worked out quite nice.
Hi Rodica. If you're referring to the sewing machine, then no, I didn't make it, but I did make the lace cutting jig. The sewing machine is available on eBay and I have attached a link below if you're interested. www.ebay.ca/itm/Leather-Sewing-Machine-Manuel-Shoe-Patcher-Singer-Adler-Repair-Cobbler-Antique/132594116949?hash=item1edf39a955%3Ag%3A60wAAOSwYUBa5CxO&_sacat=0&_nkw=leather+sewing+machine+chinese+shoe+patch+machine&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313
Great project, from a very experienced leatherworker. I want to try it too but I'm not able to created the template 😣. Is it possible to get one anyhow? Greetings from Germany
Thank you! The needles I use are size 20. I had a bit of trouble finding them, but I ordered them from China through eBay. Most needles of this size are for industrial machines but this machine uses a standard needle for a consumer machine, which are generally smaller. I also sharpen the tip of the needle to resemble the ones used for sewing leather. The tip looks a bit like a chiselled dagger (you can see pictures of such needles online). The thread is 100% polyester (Ordered from The Thread Exchange in the U.S) and I use 2 different sizes, 92lb and 138lb. On the bobbin there is a tiny metal clip that adjusts the tension of the thread. I bent this clip slightly to allow for the heavier thread, otherwise the tension would be too high. If you need parts for your machine you can contact a company in Australia through their Facebook page; "Able 290". Hope this helps.
¡Gracias!
//...Sir. You really need a Leather Sewing Machine( is still cheap if buy a used), no one use that shake hand Machine anymore, even in china...it will improve work not that heavy.
I appreciate the advice. I know i could do a better job with a better machine, but I actually don't do this sort of work very often anymore. I've often thought of getting a better machine, but it would have to be mounted to it's own table, and I don't even have a place to put it. thank you again!
You are witty, amazing, and professional
You are the best of the best

Потрясающая работа! Можно было установить заклепки снизу, где лишние отверстия, просто, как декоративные элементы)
Спасибо! Наверное, я мог бы положить там заклепки. Не думал об этом. Очень хорошее предложение :)
genius!
Thank you!
Loved the backpack and the video .Is there a possibility to buy a pattern?
Thank you. Please email me at wm17959(a)hotmail.com

Great vidieo, thank you for sharing it. But, why the rotary punch and not a drive punch? Just seems such a faff.

Lots of work however, nice result.
Thank you!
muy lindo.
gracias
I can imagine what the cost of that bag will be after the hours needed to construct it. Wow, it took him hours.....
Very nice.Would you have a pattern pack for this project?
Thank you. I'm sorry I don't have a pattern but as I tried to show in the video it's not too difficult to make.
Classic. What was the weight of the finished product?
Hi Kenneth. I never actually weighed it, and I don't have it anymore, but I would say it's about a pound or maybe less.
The stitching machine is wow! Did u make it your self?
Hi Rodica. If you're referring to the sewing machine, then no, I didn't make it, but I did make the lace cutting jig. The sewing machine is available on eBay and I have attached a link below if you're interested.

Hello Owe. Please email me your mailing address and I'll see what I can do. wm17959(a)hotmail.com.
Love the sewing machine. If I might ask, what size needle and thread do you use with your machine?

I have to stop watching when there is music. It is better to watch and hear without it.😐
OK thanks for the comment. I find it a little boring without the music. :)
