"The Bum Bum Song" - When Tom Green Was #1 on TRL and Almost Got Fired For It - Music Video Time

- In 1999, at the height of his popularity on MTV, comedian Tom Green would make a song called "The Bum Bum Song (The Lonely Swedish)". And through a rallying cry, the song would be become the number one video on Total Request Live. However, as much of a triumph it was to be the top video, Tom Green would end up potentially being at risk of making the executives upset and be fired for the stunt. This video explains the entire history behind Tom Green and his Bum Bum Song.

“Swedish” isn’t a medical supply store. That location is actually where I work, it’s a full on huge hospital campus. It’s located in First Hill in Seattle. The sign is in front of the main lobby. I tweeted a picture of what it looks like now and Tom retweeted me
That's amazing. Have you put your bum on the Swedish?
@@Widderic😂😂
Unironically one of the greatest and most important works in the history of human culture.
Another amazing video my dude, thanks so much!!!
Tom Green just straight-up airdropped into the TRL era and nearly disrupted their whole ecosystem. Beautiful moment in television history.
There's a story I read somewhere that the Insane Clown Posse had a massive campaign with the Juggalos to get their rendition of "Let's Go All The Way" on TRL, and fans called the station en masse to do so, plus a ton of Juggalos gathered outside the studio to show their support. This was a nightmare situation for MTV, who ignored all the calls, and had to work overtime to get any Juggalos offsite before the cameras started rolling. MTV wound up calling ICP's record label and telling them that the network chooses what bands appear on TRL. Whatever you think of ICP, I gotta give it up to them for coming this close to descending the show into chaos.
We all need more Tom Green in our lives.
My bum is on the Swedish

On a more serious note, Tom Green was a media pioneer. He defined television comedy and a show format that was copied for years. He also had a live internet call-in talk show years before streaming was a common thing.
Saw Freddy Got Fingered in theatres a few months back, genuinely a great and misunderstood piece of satire
Yas my dude! I honestly believe Tom Green is the Andy Kaufman of our era
It's all totally directed at MTV. He knew the show was being canceled. They paid him hence the whole 1 million dollars theme in the movie... and in the movie he blows the million for a huge prank..... which the movie cost about a million to make and was a huge prank.
Freddy got Fingered isn't that deep guys. It's not satire, lol. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, but it's just a stupid humor comedy. Nothing more, nothing less.
@@skunk2spec489 I don’t know how intentional the satire is but it does poke fun at and subvert the expectations of the crappy teen comedies of the time
@@skunk2spec489 read what I wrote....
You should definitely do a video on the music video of Bitter sweet symphony, by The Verve.
Tom Green is the Comedy OG. He was recently on Joe Rogan podcast. Fascinating stories
I caught this live on TRL when it was #1 the day after it was #8 and managed to slide a VHS into the VCR in time for recording it. I still have the tape. As a 12 year old I couldn't get enough of Tom Green.
Btw the guy on Tim and Eric who sits on you is Palmer Scott.
*CORRECTION
Freddy Got Fingered is not in the Criterion Collection itself, it is just being featured on the Criterion Channel at the moment.
Really hope it gets a Criterion Blu Ray. Would be awesome.
Great job! Thank you for all your work in putting this together.
Tom Green is the only celebrity I’ve seen in real life. This had to of been after Freddy Got Fingered, but Tony Hawk made Tom Green a “pro” for Birdhouse Skateboards. I saw him at a skate demo that was pretty cool. At the autograph signing part the team ordered pizza and Tom was taking the toppings off his pizza and throwing them at the kids. Then Tom jumped on his board and all the kids were running and skating after him in this huge parking lot. Fun times.
Tom Green and Andy Milanokis were amazing..... they paved the way for the absurdist humor of Wonder Showzen and Xavier Renegade Angel.
morning slot? it was on at 4pm!
I was thinking the same thing.
You're right. That's an absolute mistake on my end.
Even without social media, how in the world would they get away with saying it's live when it's not? I'm not 100% familiar with how TRL works, but isn't there call-ins and a live audience? None of those people wondered why the "live" segment they're in is only airing the following week?
Reminds me of the story of that streamer who said he couldn't turn on live chat because of computer problems, but it later turned out he just prerecorded it so he'd have an alibi. He committed murder while it was "live".
@@zorantaylor3190 oh true. Someone should look into where Carson Daly actually was that week. 😅
More proof that teenagers can not ever be trusted with money.

Why yes I do have a speech impediment thanks for noticing.
He was zero funny. People just liked to laugh at strange idiots. This was still shocking before the internet.
I guess that's why ppl laugh at u isn't it
@@Beth-mi2hf great one. Super unique.

One of the worst songs of the 90s is #1 from tom green. This is bad, not good!
