I live in Utah and have been double towing in the rocky mountain states with a 5th wheel for over 20 years. I have learned from hard experience there are some "1/3 rd" golden rules for safe towing of doubles. 1, Rear trailer length to never exceed more than 1/3 the length of 5th wheel, or up to the local State total max towing length regulations (65' to 70') 2, Rear trailer weight to never exceed 1/3 the GVWR of 5th wheel or 3000 lbs, which ever is less. 3, Rear trailer to have sway control device(s). While not an absolute mandatory requirement, I also installed rear trailer brakes with separate controller in cab of truck for rear trailer and have had to use it for emergencies stops and high wind situations to control unexpected sway (always happens in Wyoming i-80 going downhill with high gusty winds) .

Greg thanks for another good video. The auxiliary fuel tank is a great ideal if you don’t care to loose the bed space. I have a 2019 Ram 3500 dulley long bed with air ride on rear. Love it when we hook up the fifth wheel it’s smooth.

Hi Greg! I’m sitting at a shop in Elkhart right now. I’m getting a Gen Y gooseneck hitch setup installed tomorrow on my Alliance. I can’t wait to feel the difference.

Hi Greg - I just installed a 20K Reese Goosebox to my 5th wheel. Really love the simplicity of hitching/unhitching - I dropped our last 5th wheel on the bed rails (back in 2013) - was an embarrassing and costly mistake. The goose box felt just as good as our prior MorRyde pin box (same as yours). On that 5th wheel I also had a hitch fabricated for it welded to frame.
Our current 5th wheel (a 2021 Solitude 2930RL) I was considering MorRyde IS but right now I don’t want to invest any $$ into it because it was recently frame flex repaired (upper deck - cracks in wall sills, missing lag screws - you know the rest …). I just added the missing rollers under the bedroom slide - schwintec - was only supported by the 4 tracks and essentially shower door rollers.
We also tow with a 1 ton truck. So far the suspension is stock except I changed the shocks to Bilstein 5100’s.

Hi Greg, enjoyed your video. I have a Momentum 25G Toy Hauler, 31' long, rated for 13,000 lbs that I tow with my 2019 F250 using an Hensley Arrow hitch. I have a 6" lift with 37s and added Air Lift LoadLifter 7500 XL air bags to the truck. In addition I've added independent suspension to the trailer, I installed Road Master Trailer Suspension Kit Comfort Ride for use with Tandem Axle and Shock Absorber System for 3" Axle Diameters. Handles great! I agree with you on the auxiliary fuel transfer tank. I added a 51 gallon tank with tool box on top. Everything fits under a Back Flip tonneau cover. That's about 79 gallons of fuel and easily 700+ miles between fuels stops towing the trailer. Enjoy your channel, even though I don't have a 5th wheel, there is still a lot of content I can use. Stay safe! Don from Florida

Would never have a big RV without it. We love our MORryde independent suspension and disc brakes. Prevented our Grand Design Momentum from getting frame failure much worse (band-aid fix done) than it would have without it.

I have a 50 gallon tank on my ram 3500 dually. I’m running air suspension in the rear and thuren suspension in front and rear while towing a 43ft fifth wheel with MORryde AllTrek suspension and Reese Goosebox with air ride.
Very smooth towing and bed is free from any hitches.

Missouri has a doubles/triples endorsement but IIRC it only applies to class A and B licenses and commercial vehicles, but I haven't driven for 10 years, so your mileage may vary 😊

  • @interpinto

I'm pro Timbrens, I've used them. The flip side is that when your trailer is hooked up and the weight in on them, you limit your suspension travel to an inch or two. That can put a lot of stress on you trailer frame. I am using the factory overload springs now and there is more vertical travel in the pickup rear suspension when hitting bigger bumps.

Greg, love your channel. We have a gd 324 mbs and I had the 20k goosebox added to our trailer. It has the airbags in it. Also waiting for delivery of my freedom hauler trailer/ tote for back of 5th wheel. Dont really care for the double tow. We have been doing a couple times with my new rzr pro xp but want to be able to actually back up. Considering an auxillary tank. Thx for those one.

Manufacturers add receiver hitch's from the factory designed to hold 300# tongue weight and tow 3,000# capacity, they calculate that into their equations. If there are frame problems down the road because of it, then that's on them. It's imperative that the RV owner is diligent about calculating their weight and stay within the manufacturer guidelines, and be able to prove it through proper documenting.

Had Sumo Springs - and they held the load, but were soooo rough riding when empty. I took them off and installed AirRyde 5000 with the blue tooth compressor and couldn't be happier. Towing a Fusion 373 with Reese Goose Box 20K with 2023 GMC Duramax 10 speed. I run at about 45 PSI and truck sits level and rides smooth.

@@Good-Life34010 the majority of rvers can't really handle it plus the second trailer usually does not have brakes. Watch the videos of what happens in a panic stop with them. @@waltfriedrich7631 how are you sure? The overwhelming majority of frame failure is clearly evidenced by a majority who don't even know what double towing is. As far as weighing? I'm absolutely studious about it. My pinweight has never exceeded 210 lbs. and my payload weight has never exceeded 2,650 lbs. Again, frame failure is a majority of units that don't even double tow.
