Hey Matt. Love the jazzy new intro. :-) I have a Panasonic UB9000 (big brother to the 420, but much of the same image processing). I also have a 4K HDR projector to go with it, but one thing I’d add is that not all 4K HDR televisions or (especially) projectors do a good job with their built-in HDR processing. The ability of these Panasonic players to process the HDR (in the quality way they do) makes them useful for anyone to get the best image possible on their displays. I’ve heard about those MadVR processors before, but I can fathom paying that much money for one, not when this player does essentially the same kind of processing. Good stuff man!

    Hi Matt.
I have the UB9000 for the dedicated 2.0 analogue audio output.
I have it connected to my TXP50VT65 plasma, its a 1080p display, and like you i use the Panasonic to down-convert 4k content.
One thing id like to add is in addition to the settings you mentioned in the set up menu as here i set my output to 1080p with an SDR-Rec 709 colour space.
But... in addition to this, when playing back a 4k/UHD title if you press the Options button mid-playback, you can go into the picture menu and use the DR conversion output.
This will let you adjust to taste, how much dynamic picture range you want/need depending on the HDR master. For example my 4k disc of Rocky IV both the theatrical and directors cut look bright and vibrant in contrast and colour, however... Dune 2 and now Godzilla-1 look just a tad to dark and while i can get used to the darker image in a totally dark room, I have no hope with even one lamp on.
Using the DR range converter and taking it up to say +2 or even as far as +4 brings down the wide range to brighten up the whole picture and keep the contrast details.
If i went the other way and used -2 or -4 it would be closer to the HDR original setting BUT! The image would get even darker. The default position is 0 in the middle and for my plasma a pinch at +2 is usually enough.
Not sure if all Panasonic players offer this, but am pretty sure that they will via matching HCX chipsets. But worth a look. Each supported video format has its own preferences ie DVD with reducing edge correction or regular blu-ray with everything off, 3D and 4k/UHD

Sorry to hear about your dog as well. It's always been a little harder for my wife & I to decide on getting another dog or pet. When our first cat passed in 2016, it took us almost 2 full years to decide on getting Winston. We're just slow at that sort of thing.
As for content, what type of video would you like to see? I can definitely try and do one for you.

I have the 420, used it to replace my LG 4k player which didn't impress me. I have to say it's one of the best players out there when it comes to overall performance. So, naturally, I had to buy another one for my 2nd setup. And for anyone who collects import blu rays, there is an easy to use hack. If anyone wants the info, just send me a reply and I'll respond with the details.
Panasonic is #1 in my book.

I too use a 1080p Projector and when my older Panasonic Blu-ray Player gave in, upgraded to a 4k replacement.
I in fact bought this very same model, but had to return it due to the fact that it does not include the 'Subtitle Shift' function, and the 'Subtitle Shift ' function is a necessity for me because I remove the "black bars" from all Letterbox films, and sometimes the subtitles are outside of the frame of the image, so, it's required that they be raised, otherwise they're not seen at all.
I opted for a Sony 4k player (region free), as it DOES have the 'Subtitle Shift' function.
Being as you're clearly very knowledgeable when it comes to projectors, I wonder if you might know why I have an annoying single yellow line on the projected image.
I can't figure out if the line is coming from the projector itself, or maybe through my Amplifier via the HDMI cable.
Any information you may have on why this persistent has appeared, would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the compliment, however I'm not a technician, so take what I saw for what it is. I'm thinking the yellow line issue could be either an HDMI board issue or an issue with the mirrors / panels inside the unit. From the way you described it, I'd lean towards the HDMI board being the problem. Beyond that, I'd say you should have an actual technician look at it to make sure. Hope that helps.

I bought 2 of these. You can not buy a better 4K player for the price. I paid $200.00 for each of these.

I have a 420, I do wish it output Dolby Vision encoded disks… but, it does output HDR 10/10+, which it does a great job producing.
However, I had a Sony that output Dolby Vision, and I returned it. The Panasonic just flat out had a notably better picture. Especially upconverting a 1080p BluRay… the Panasonic smacks down the Sony. I’ve become a Panasonic fanboy when it comes to disk players…

I got the same Panasonic ub420 but I upgraded the power cord with Audio Quest! The sound have improved and the picture is much sharp more detailed. I'm using JVC 4k projector the reason i pick the ub420 it's because it didn't have dolby vision that should reduced the price.
