I’m in the same boat brother. I bought a Sony x700 and 30 some odd uhd movies about 10 days ago. 2/2 movies watched so far skip and or froze on the end of the second layer. This was purchasing to be an upgrade over using console bc Xbox series x and ps5 don’t have Dolby Vision which is a deal breaker for me on my lg c2 oled. So now my only option is to buy the Panasonic 820 for $424 on sale or $389 from Amazon warehouse. I’m not putting up with every disc skipping and freezing. It ruins the whole experience. And you’re right, $500 is too much for the optimizer feature, but if it’s the only player that can handle triple layer discs than I have no choice but to accept that it’s worth it as I have too many new movies bought last week.
I guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Ronnie Peyton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Good review, thanks. It was interesting to get your insight on the settings and what some of them mean, which is sometimes the most difficult thing with these options, especially when the explanation in the manual is often: "HDR on/off: this option turns HDR on or off." Gee, thanks manual, that's super helpful! Haha. Thanks again for the good review.
Hey,Glenn from U.K. here im looking at one of these as my Sony x800 is bad with lip sync and has the odd freeze too,I'll never buy anything Sony again and I've had pannys before and all have worked perfectly so looks like more money required, I like the optimizer ,great review.Cheers .

I have a Panasonic ub491 with a few years and the remote control layout is almost identical to that one. There's a few buttons added and three moved. You will get used to the button layout and will be able to use it without looking at it eventually. I'm just watching this because I just ordered this blu ray player.
I bought mine open box for $240 totally worth it at that price, but I wouldn't buy it at $500. My second pick would be the Sony - UBP-X800M2 only because it supports Dolby vision and I'm not aware of any other players that do.
@William I have a Sony UBPX700 from March 2018 that supports Dolby Vision. Could have been from a firmware update at some point, but it’s there. Cheers!
This one is supported by Dolby vision as well. I was looking at it on Amazon that’s what brought me to this UA-cam video I wanted to see what the picture would actually look like if someone had an older smart tv. We have a Samsung smart tv in our bedroom from 2013/14 so the picture is actually amazing but it’s not as great as our 2020 Samsung 4K oled blah blah blah tv we have in the living room. And I can see a huge difference in the picture if I’m watching a show or movie through cable tv vs if I watch the same show or movie on Hulu from my 4K fire stick.
The LG UBK90 double D - Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are automatic so just sit, relax, and enjoy the topnotch picture and sound! This feature is not automatic in either Sony X700 and Sony X800M2. I bought this 4K Blu Ray Player last Black Friday and yes, it’s by far the best 4K Blu Ray player you can buy. The only con I have with it, it doesn’t play 4K HDR .MKV files with Dolby Atmos or DTS-X……Hopefully Panasonic will come out with an update for this but I highly doubt it.
Spend the one version from top of this model. All aluminum chassis and so much more. Like I've said cry once save best you can afford, cry twice paid twice. Am saving for 9000 model. About $1K in Canadian dollars.
The DP-UB820 doesn't have a Coax out, but it does have an Optical out. I may buy the Sony UBP-X800M2 for the SACD & DSD playback. It may have better sound than the DP-UB820. I can't find anyone doing A/B comparisons of image & audio quality with other players, so it's unknown how the different players rate against each other.
I owned the sony x800m2 and returned it for this player, both the audio and video quality were excellent on both. I found the Sony to be more unreliable in reading discs, the panasonic hasn't skipped or frozen at all over the last 6 months, the Sony had a few problems with that

I have had issues with several discs in terms of playback on my DPUB20. Even when discs aren't scratched they will sometimes glitch up. Even when I replace the discs issues persist. I have even had an experience where I rewatch a movie that worked perfectly the first time, only to experience issues on the second viewing.
I just bought this today on sale. I’m having an issue, the Atmos track outputs to True-hD and DTS-X to DTS-Hd Master. I can’t seem to get those two audio formats to output correctly.
@@MovieCaveDave My connections are all correct. I did find the answer to my question online: “The Panasonic DP-UB820 does support the newer audio formats Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It won't decode them natively, but it will output them in the "bitstream" format to your Dolby Atmos/DTS:X receiver that can then properly decode and play the audio format”. Thanks for your reply
EVERY Blu-ray player (regular or 4K) that bitstreams TrueHD or DTS-HD MA will also bitstream Atmos or DTS:X from a compatible disc to a compatible AVR or soundbar, though it most likely won't say Atmos or DTS:X; both this player & my old Sony UBP-X700 showed only TrueHD or DTS-HD MA. Atmos & DTS:X on discs are nothing more than metadata in a TrueHD or DTS-HD MA bitstream (respectively) that a compatible AVR or soundbar uses to direct specific sound objects in the 7.1 lossless bitstream to your height speakers. (Atmos also comes in two other varieties used mostly with streaming & game consoles.) If you're not getting Atmos or DTS:X from a compatible disc, you're probably not bitstreaming lossless audio.
I picked up the sony X700 for $148. To me paying an extra $250-300 isnt worth it just for HDR 10+ and HDR optimizer. Ive had my sony freeze only 3 times in about 60 hours of usage. Its annoying but ill live with it for $250-$300 lol. Only other complaint I have with it is it turns off after 10 minutes of it being paused. I believe there isnt an option to turn that off.
I own it and like it, but I do have a pretty substantial complaint. Often times, when I reinsert a movie that I had been watching and click on the disc's resume feature, the picture and sound is incredibly juddery. This has happened on a dozen or so discs. Accordingly, it's fair to conclude that it's the player. The firmware is up to date. Perhaps I received a dud out of the box.
The problem might be differences in frame rates, like if the player setting is not matching the native movie frame rate. Try to tweak around with frame rate settings :)
I researched and ordered one. It's coming tomorrow. Reviews are mostly in favor. I like the upscaling feature that is also rated well. I have a LOT of old DVDs. Thanks for the video!

It’s awkward in this specific remote to be fair because you can accidentally press it and disrupt your viewing. Best player for £$ though; especially multi region.
The China ones are 15.00 and have the backlight option and the Netflix button is in a different place where it won't get accidentally pressed all the time.
I have this machine and it is fantastic but it is still too expensive after 4-5 years on the market they should lower the price. They only lower around the holidays bring the price down and I would probably get another one!!
I bought this player as an open box to replace my Sony UBP-X700. There's nothing particularly special about it over the cheaper Sony other than reliability. I was tired of having to wipe down new discs in the hopes they wouldn't freeze up in the Sony only to have them freeze anyway. There's no discernible difference in image quality between the two players and they both do Dolby Vision. I'd say don't pay full price for the UB820. Wait for a sale or buy used/open box somewhere.
I bought this player 4 monthes ago but I returned it because it did not play mkv files correctly from HDD via USB. The video got stuck after 24 minutes and then only to turn off the player helped. Playing blu-ray discs was excellent.

For my projector set my 820 to projector setting, nice feature. JVC 4K projectors with frame adapt HDR does tone mapping well

Pana's is too much money. So go with LG. The new LG OLED TV is topnotch too. Both good match made in heaven, este South Korea LOL!

This is one of the best 4K players on the market outside of the Panasonic 9000.
I got the 424. Fantastic player, never a problem. Only odd thing is that my district 9 blu ray doesn't play...
Did you ever figure out why?
I have quite a few blu rays that won't play. The Accountant, Batman Beyond, the Friday the 13th films and Justice League War are just some of them.

I just bought this today on sale. I’m having an issue, the Atmos track outputs to True-hD and DTS-X to DTS-Hd Master. I can’t seem to get those two audio formats to output correctly.
Go into the home menu, under sound and select HDMI and make sure it is set to bitstream over HDMI, hope that helps

@@RobertK1993 the x800 sucks. I'd actually buy the 700 before I went with that. This Panasonic player is better than both of them significantly.

It’s awkward in this specific remote to be fair because you can accidentally press it and disrupt your viewing. Best player for £$ though; especially multi region.
