    I have the ub420 and i bought it right before i bought a new tv. It was cheaper than the 820, so i settled. In hindsight, i wish i bought the 820 because i now have an LG G1, and didn't realize the ub420 didn't do dolby vision. So my suggestion is if you have a Sony, or LG TV, go for the 820.

    I don’t know much about audio. How big of a deal are the RCA 7.1 surround sound inputs on the 820? If I want to get a sound system that supports Dolby Atmos, would that be a problem for the 420, or would the sound system use the HDMI inputs? Are the RCA 7.1 inputs basically just for older equipment?

    • @b-icemedia
      @b-icemedia  Рік тому +1

      The RCA inputs are a big deal if you have an older AVR receiver or amplifier because then you can connect your speakers directly to the player through the amp/receiver. I can’t speak on it fully, but I don’t think it would output Dolby Atmos this way, but I may be wrong. HDMI will provide much cleaner sound because RCA is not as high quality.

    I've been slowly rebuilding my entertainment center. I scrapped some older obsolete technology, replaced my receiver, and added a turntable. The one older thing I'm still using is my PS3 for both CDs, DVDs, and BDs. It turns out standalone CD players are quite expensive and my PS5 doesn't play CDs, so the PS3 still gets use as a media player. This review though saved me a lot of searching around and research. How long do they LAST? (warranty wise)
    I've read (in various forums/reviews etc.) that these Panasonic players (also 820 and even 9000) have some disc tray jamming issues...? Is that ACTUALLY so?
    And some suggest getting extended warranty, so that they can replace the "broken tray player" after standard warranty period, other than throwing it away sooner...

    Outside of Dolby Vision, is the 820 even necessary? I remember the 4k Blu-ray of Oppenheimer being pretty impactful especially when the Trinity Test. And that was in just HDR10. All I really care about is the quality and reliability of the player. And all my 4k Blu-rays are HDR10 anyhow. As long as the picture quality and reliability is solid, especially for older content, I’ll be perfectly satisfied. As I understand the upscaling quality on the Panasonic 4k Blu-ray players are really good and should make even my DVD of 1985’s North and South with Patrick Swayze look good.
    And I’ve heard bad things about the LG and Sony players. I have a 65” LG C2. I’m also gathering the components for my PC build, so a 4k Blu-ray player isn’t top priority.

    DV provides the best PQ? I don't know, it's a double edged sword imo. Since OLED is absolute trash strictly in terms of motion compared to plasma which makes both features useless imo, since you can't get good motion quality when using either since they're shooting for nearly 1000 nits. Thankfully an external Black frame insertion device(called retrotink4K) will be able to cut down 50%-75% OLED motion blur for 24 & 30fps content(Ala movies & broadcast TV shows), in SDR @1080p. It's all dependent on how good your OLED's BFI is. With something like a Samsung S90C QD-OLED, you'll be removing 50 percent for ex.
    HDR/DV @ 4K don't mean anything to me if OLED motion turns to complete mush when anything moves beyond a snails pace. :P We've gone backwards. It's plasma all the way at this point, until Retrotink4K gets released later this year. It's going to cost a whopping $1000 US, but i'll gladly spend that amount if I can get a plasma like experience on QD-OLED, with obviously much higher brightness, true blacks, whiter whites and more pop. Too bad about OLED's excess film judder, that's another issue that can't be mitigated unless you force SOE.

    • @b-icemedia
      @b-icemedia  Рік тому

      I don’t personally think the motion looks bad at all with OLED motion turned off or having it in cinematic mode (I’ll have to double-check my settings). Samsung & Sony OLEDs are the best in the market by far, so I’m sure their motion handling is superior to my LG B2.
      I have to disagree with plasmas being the way to go still because their color handling and lack of HDR are too far in the past for me! But everyone has their preferences, and I can understand your viewpoint too. Dolby vision has the highest metadata of all formats if I remember correctly, but I know HDR10 can technically be a bit brighter because it’s static. I care most about color, crispness, and brightness over motion handling unless it’s jarringly bad like on cheap blu-ray players and budget TVs.

    • @NintenPizza
      @NintenPizza Рік тому

      @@b-icemedia
      Exactly, it's all personal preference(s) at the end of the day. But for me personally, I just hate the fact that i've paid thousands for a tech that's basically a huge downgrade strictly in terms of motion persistence, aka high motion blur. CRT's, ever since the 80's, 90's and 2000's had ZERO motion blur and that technology is still the king of motion.
      They boasted a 1ms persistence or sometimes sub 1ms or at worse 2ms...OLED is 16ms by comparison....OR 8.3ms when gaming at 120fps or using BFI at 60fps, neither of which can be used for movies & TV, so we're back to that awful 16ms. :P. The only displays currently on the market that can get you a 1 or sub 1ms are 240fps(+240hz black frame insertion) LCD Monitors and Quest 2, But those are smaller LCD's monitors used strictly for PC gaming, and Quest 2 is VR obviously. And i definitely do not want to watch movies with washed out black levels with plastic bulk on my head no matter how perfect the motion is, so. :P
      But ya, WRGB OLED definitely cannot compete with the overall colour Vs a good plasma in SDR. My LG C1's colour volume is just awful, colors look completely desaturated, skin tones are paler and you really have to tinker with the white balance settings to suck a lot of that excess green and blue out of the picture. WRGB OLED's also dilute colour. I had to use the native color gamut to compensate for the desaturated colours instead of Auto. I still have my Panasonic S60 plasma, and it has wonderful colour which i still use a reference, and i still prefer to watch movies and stream on it Vs my C1. Once the retrotink4K becomes available, i'll be able to use it with my C1 and knock that pesky 16ms motion persistence down to about 6.2ms(Which is better than most plasmas) for movies & TV shows since it uses dual strobe BFI.
      QD-OLED on the other had can definitely compete with plasma colour, and it easily has the upper hand for brighter colours. QD-OLED(S90C or S95C) + Retrotink4K(If it lives up to the hype) is the way to fly for movies in SDR, for those who wan't to reduce at least 50%(8.3ms) of QD-OLED motion blur, and don't care for HDR, DV & 4K. At best it does 4ms, but again your OLED has support 4ms BFI, and there's nothing currently on the market that can. In the future there may be.
      And 4K doesn't really matter to me at 65". If i had a 77" that would be a different story. :P

    • @frankbizzoco1954
      @frankbizzoco1954 Рік тому

      The Retrotink 4k is more for video game upscaling than anything else. It also will not pass through dolby atmos. I have the 5x, and it has a few options to upscale legacy video formats, but i don't think Mike chi built it with that stuff in mind. It's just an added bonus. If you want that smooth motion you're talking about, you can use game mode on the C1 with BFI for the time being. I have a G1 and I definitely had to knock the white balance down to warm 50 on game mode. Filmmaker mode is also way too dark, so I use cinema home. The new g3 oled panels have that new focus all the light directly at tge viewer, so the new g and c series are now much better that the tvs from a few years ago. With that said, I came from a Samsung plasma from 2010, and I wouldn't trade the G1 for a plasma ever. Other than having to change the white balance on game and standard modes, I think tge colors are great. I have the panasonic ub420, and I was thinking of upgrading to the 820, but I'm not sure its really worth it.

      The Tink4K, when using triple strobe BFI for movies & TV reduces QD-OLED motion blur by almost 60%(That's a HUGE difference), and regular OLED motion blur by 50%, and reduces that nasty excess choppy OLED judder even better than a plasma AND CRT. it's limited to 1080p and creates mild BFI flicker on whites, but the big boost in motion clarity and judder reduction is well worth the trade offs.
      Once TINK8K arrives, it will be able to reduce even more motion blur, and at '4K'. HDR and DV are irrelevant to me if I have to deal with any motion blur and choppy judder. With TINK4K + QD-OLED, it's like watching movies on a plasma but with perfect blacks, higher brightness and whiter whites.
