  • Ryan White December 6, 1971 -- April 8, 1990
On April 11, 1990,1500+ people attended Ryan White's funeral, in a sad chapter in America's history. (I wrote about it here: tinyurl.com/24xlu4m)
    Ryan~
In times of sheer darkness and despair, you shone brighter than the most brilliant star and displayed a bravery rarely matched.
Happy 39th birthday to the little boy with the bright smile. Happy birthday, skyline pigeon...
Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
    Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway
For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
    And my eyes are mirrors
    Of the world outside
    Thinking of the way
That the wind can turn the tide
    And these shadows turn
    From purple into grey
    For just a Skyline Pigeon
    Dreaming of the open
    Waiting for the day
    He can spread his wings
    And fly away again
    Fly away skyline pigeon fly
    Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day
I want to hear the pealing bells
    Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
    From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun
    For just a Skyline Pigeon
    Dreaming of the open
    Waiting for the day
    He can spread his wings
    And fly away again
    Fly away skyline pigeon fly
    Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind
    ~Elton John & Bernie Taupin

Elton John is broken so badly by these deaths that all he can do is perform for the loved ones of these people who passed away. That's how he can keep his composure. He knows it's either being emotional or singing.

Can’t believe it’s been 28 years today. I was only 2 when he passed. All throughout my school years, I learned how brave he was, giving the dire circumstances. I am now a teacher in my hometown of Indy and each year, I take my students to his gravesite in Cicero as well at the Children’s Museum in Indy to educate how important he was in his short 18 years. Although we were only 6 yrs apart, Ryan is still my childhood hero. Amazing young man with more heart than most people. RIP Ryan!

This is the part that breaks me. 😭
There is something about that falsetto that always cuts the onions while watching this. This is the first time I have ever burst into tears listening to an Elton John song I mean Candle in the Wind is a sad song but for some odd reason it never made me cry but only feel sad.
But this version of Skyline Pigeon combined with this being done for Ryan White and because my grandfather passed away last year just makes me lose it.
Ryan White, Grandpa, and MJ...I hope to see you in heaven. ❤️ 😭 🌸

The photographer behind the piano is Taro Yamasaki. Yamasaki's piece on a Jacksonville medium security prison earned him a Pulitzer Prize. His father was an architect was almost interned with other Japanese-Americans during the Second World War, but his employer vouched for him. You might be familiar with some of us work. He was the architect of The World Trade Center in New York City.

Though not the best quality video, this is the most moving performance of this song I have ever seen. I've always wondered where this song fit as it is a more obscure tune, but it is almost as if it were written 20 years prior especially for this funeral. Thanks for posting.

I remember hearing about Ryan being diagnosed with AIDS on the news. Him and I were the same age. Then many years later found out he passed away. This video brings tears to my eyes. The way people treated him was inhumane. Especially James O Smith. The man who refused to let Ryan go back to school. Shame on him and everyone else who treated him so horribly. He was just a kid. An innocent child.

Anyone else here after reading/listening to the Elton John book? He talks about looking back at this performance and seeing how drugs and partying took it's toll.

I am reading Elton's book and I am so shocked about his past life as drug addict and about this sad Ryan's story! I fallow him for so long, I was 9 years old, now I am 45.....he has accompained all my life with his music! my dream is to shake his hand one day and say him thank you for all the emotions his music gives me.
