The Golden Age was so spoilt for choice that this film was received tepidly by critics and took markedly less at the box office than 'Top Hat' or 'Swing Time'. Apparently the greatest dance team of the century and the composing partnership of George and Ira Gershwin weren't enough. Lucky Americans in 1937, did they but know it.
I was aware of the Japanese version of 'Shall We Dance' as well as the one with JLo and Richard Here. I think the basic storyline of those two movies was the same. This version with Astaire and Rogers, based on this trailer, appears to have a completely different storyline. I wish I could see it.
It's available on DVD. There's a couple of "skippable" scenes - especially that weird back-bending ballerina moment in the penultimate scene! 😲 Watch it all through the 1st time & you'll know what I mean!

Fred himself stated that after TOP HAT each film after that made less and less money until the last one just about broke even.
A fantastic movie! A must see!😊

EDIT: Richard Gere. Darn autocorrect!! 🤦
