How incredible 8 bucks and the kindness they showed you!!! When I drove through the country of Honduras I got a sinus infection and the local clinic saw me and treated me and charged me nothing! Some.loclas at the clinic insisted I come to their home for dinner, was so amazing that someone so poor offered me to the table and what a beautiful meal ! I love Honduras and its people.
We had very positive experiences there as well. Our next episode will include more Honduras as we spent a lot more time there on our way north, after we turned around in Panama.

Hey guys! Just started watching your videos. So I’m actually trying to drive my Acura TLX from Miami, FL to Managua, Nicaragua. How dangerous is the drive since I’m driving a newer car than most travelers? Also, how much do you think I’ll need for a trip like this? It’s only a one way trip
As far as vehicle theft is concerned, it's like being in the USA. Don't park your nice car on the street overnight or on a back ally in a bad part of town and you'll probably be fine. Also, try not to leave valuables (phone, camera, gps) in visible places that would tempt someone looking through the window.
Budget is a tough one to answer since it has to do with your travel style and how fast you are planning to do the trip. Doing the trip faster=more expensive per day, but cheaper overall. Most people traveling by car through this area have a budget of $350-$525 USD per week, but if your goal is just to get to Managua you could easily spend $1000 in a week since you'd be refilling your gas tank, staying in hotels, and eating out a lot more often.

It’s been thirty years since I’ve last been in Central America, and done border crossings. It was frustrating have to pay obvious mordidas; but it wasn’t unexpected and I never made a big deal about it. I seem to remember it not being as complicated as what you’ve shown here. It didn’t help that I spoke Spanish. But it made everything more enjoyable when dealing with regular people. Many showing appreciation that I, (an obvious Gringo,) spoke their language.
It's still a wonderful area to travel through with lovely people. I'm not surprised to hear that the borders used to be a simpler process. When we used less popular crossings they often had smaller offices with few or no computers and got things done a lot faster.
I live in Nicaragua but am visiting the U.S. and am planning on driving down in around two weeks. My question is, do you have to declare and unload all the stuff from the vehicle in customs at every border? Thanks
No. You have to get a temporary import permit for your car, but you don't have to declare your luggage. If the border agents want you to unpack your car to search it, then you must comply, but they never asked us to do that.

Great videos! Helpful info! I have a quick question. When you are staying in an area similar to Las Penitas, do you still camp out in your car? If so, do you use the iOverlander app to find spots to camp?
We usually camp out of our car. If we are in a town, like las penitas then we will usually pay to camp on someone's land so that we can use their facilities since we have no toilet in our car and little privacy in camp. We camped in many beachfront parking lots at restaurants or hostels.
We do use ioverlander and other apps like it, but I would like to caution agains the over use of apps and sharing of "wild" camp sites. They are good tools, but I do credit them with the destruction of many campsites that just can't handle the increased traffic produced by the pin in the map.

Hi, what kind of paperwork do you need for your dog while traveling through Central America? I'm planning to head down there from Canada next fall with my dog. Thanks for this informative video!
You need health certificates showing that your dog has received it's shots (most importantly rabies) and is considered healthy by the veterinarian.
From your experience do you think it is safe to drive thru Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras to get to Nicaragua. You have friends in Nicaragua. Are they "well connected"? Thanks for any advice, Ellard
I do think it is safe to travel through these countries. Just like in any country there are going to be "bad neighborhoods" in some cities and if you go looking for trouble you sill find it, but if you are friendly, aware of your surroundings, and not trying to do anything illegal then you will probably have a great time.
Our friends in Nicaragua are not "well connected". Just the usual gringos that moved down there

You are supposed to get insurance in every country. It ranges in price, but is generally $10-$30 usd for a 30 day period and is available at an office at most border crossings. The time we didn't get insurance was in Guatemala and that was because there was no office at the Belize/Guatemala crossing and the closest office was in Guatemala City, more than 1/2 way through the country on our route.
Mexico is different. They do more of a USA-style system where you buy it through a private company and can choose to get minimal amounts of liability coverage or expensive full coverage plans.

I am planning a trip from Arizona to Panama here soon. I want to take a vehicle with US plates on it all the way there and back. Will this be an issue for any Central American countries? Also you mentions import fees, is that even if you will only be a few days in each country or is that only for long term visits? Also how pricey is it to pay the import fees?
Hi Arizona Tactical. Sounds like a good trip. We did our entire trip with California plates on the vehicle with no problem. As long as the vehicle is left hand drive and you have the USA registration and title in your name then it should be allowed to every country on your trip. The import fees I refer to are for Temporary Import Permits (TIP). This is the permit that allows you to bring your foreign vehicle into each of the countries along your route. You will get a new one at each border and have to pay each time.
In Central America they are usually good for the same amount of time that is on your tourist visa unless you are dealing with a reentry or visa extension situation. It cost $5-$25 usd at each border.
In Mexico its good for 6 months and cost around $100usd if I remember right. It also requires a credit card payment that is % based on the value of your vehicle. This payment is returned to you after you export the vehicle. It is meant to deter illegal importation.

I'm pretty confident you would need to go into the offices at each border to present your paperwork with the helper. You may be able to pay people enough to not do things by the rules. But I personally wouldn't hand a helper my passport, vehicle title, and all the money for fees and expect him to return. He might come back, but You would be in a pretty bad situation if you were stranded in the frontera zone without your passport or vehicle paperwork.

Put all of your documents in a secure folder and carry them with you as you go to each window/office. Sometimes they will ask for something unexpected, so its good to have everything with you otherwise you have to go get it and wait in line again.
Expect it to take a long time. You may get through in less than an hour sometimes, but show up expecting a long difficult day. Bring snacks and water.
I don't like using "fixers" or "helpers". they want to rush you through so they can get another client and that doesn't leave you time to understand the process, keep track of your documents, and check that the border agents filled out all of your paperwork correctly.
Check spelling, dates, and vin number on your documents before leaving each office. If they make a mistake and you don't notice, its your fault as far as the next border agent or police is concerned.

yes. For Mexico get it online or at a private business near the border on the USA side. Guatemala is a bit odd. I think you are technically supposed to have it, but as far as I could figure, the only place to get it was in major cities in the middle of the country, so we chanced it without. Not recommending that's what you do, just what we ended up doing after not finding an insurance agent at the Belize/Guatemala border.

You could try asking rental car companies, but I don't think they would allow it. If you find someone that does let you take their car outside of the country be prepare for a difficult time at each border as they want to see the vehicle title at each crossing and see that it is yours.

Do you bring a copy of the title or you need to bring the original title with you to enter these countries?
You need to have the original. This is what the border agents will want to see, but we also made good color copies of everything and carried them with us as backup and because many border crossings will want a copy of the vehicle registration, your drivers license, the vehicle title, or your passport. If you already have the copies, its one less office you have to find and may save you hours if you avoid waiting in lines or waiting for the copy place to open.

You do need car insurance. The cost varies, but is generally between $5 and $40 USD for a month.

My husband and I and two small dogs want to travel from Florida to Honduras in a car that is ours ( the bank doesn’t own it ) He is from Honduras and I also speak Spanish. Can you please advice on where is the best place to start as far as paperwork to cross the Mexican and Guatemalan border into Honduras. Wikioverland is a useful website for more uptodate info, but from my knowledge you will need: Passports for you and your husband, drivers license for anyone who will be driving, and title for your vehicle. They may also ask for (so it is best to have) vehicle registration and health certificates for each dog. It is also useful to have color and black-n-white copies of each of these in a folder with you. You can generally make copies at each border crossing, but having them already will save some time.
Guys I' live in Texas and I'm thinking on doing this trip as I have to get to San Salvador elsalvador but besides that I'm wanting to do the pan American to South America would it be possible to do it on a motorcycle or a car your input is very appreciated thanks guys
Definitely. Lots of people do the Pan American on motorcycle. They tend to stay in more hostels and hotels, but spend less on gas. Cars allow for more room to cary gear if you want to camp, surf, rock climb, kayak, or whatever along the way.
Driving from America to Panama, are there any RV parks on the way.
Lots in Baja, a few in popular parts of Mexico and not many south of there. There are people running campgrounds, but not in the RV park style with hookups and septic dumping and all of that.

I did not get the international drivers license and was never asked for one. for 2 people and the truck the border crossings cost 25-100 usd including vehicle insurance, visa, and tip fees. You may find more up to date info on wiki overland
I hate that Honduras' worst settings are in the south, because most mochileros go through that part. Food is bad (unlike the north), scenarios are bad, the weather is bad, and roads are dirty. Please, visit the north whenever you can. It's far better than the rest of Central America.
We did visit Northern Honduras and Isla Utila on our way back north to USA. We had a great time!

Hey I have so many questions. Mainly, is it possible to cross the dorien gap or to bypass it into Colombia ?
Crossing the Darian Gap isn't really an option for most travelers. Permits are difficult to get, there are no roads, it is a mountainous land full of rivers and jungle and it is a known home to guerrillas and traffickers.
Most people who want to "drive" from north to South America ship their vehicle in a container from panama to Columbia and either fly or sail to Columbia, where they receive their vehicle and continue traveling.

@@gypsyfilms2816 For a brief while there was a "ferry" that would take vehicles and other shipments, but it's been gone for years. You can still put your vehicle in a shipping container and ship it though.

Hi, 1st I want to thank you, my family has found our selves in a difficult situation, my boyfriend and father of our 1 year old daughter was deported to Honduras and we have been trying to plan how to be together and it's been vary scary for me wondering if we can live in Honduras. Hi Patricia. We will be reentering Honduras in our video series soon, so keep an eye out for that. We actually spent some time in Honduras on our way North and had some fun adventures hiking in the national forest and learning to scuba dive in the Caribbean Islands.

@@patriciaandrade6098 Everyone's experience is different. We had no problems in Honduras, but from what I've read they do have a high murder and violent crime rate, but that is mostly in the cities. We didn't spend any time in the cities because we aren't city people, so I can't speak to how they feel. Unfortunately, I am no expert in your situation. Moving to a place is much different than just traveling through. I would suggest talking to your boyfriend and his family. I feel the most safe in a place where I've made friends with the locals and feel that I have a community around me that cares about my safety.

It's funny how cost are all relative. 24 bucks was a good deal, but it seamed like a lot at the time since we hadn't spent more than 15 for a place to stay in over 6 months
Did they search inside your car or use X ray scanners? Looking to bring my drone...
No. It's normal for them to open all doors and look inside, maybe look in the center consul or glove box, but not much more than that.
what was the final cost of the 'back into her bumper ordeal'?
I believe we talked her down to $150 USD. Good learning experience

It's always an option to pay a "fixer" or "helper" at every border. We did it once because we just couldn't find where we were supposed to go when entering El Salvador. But usually the officials are helpful enough that we can figure it out.
Congratulations, you spirited adventurers! I love the video, loved your patience (exceeding mine, that's for sure). A couple of times in the last decade, I have travelled with my wife's extended family down mainland Mexico to Zacatecas, and then on to Guadalajara. You can expect the same kind of bureaucratic b.s. when you get to the main entrance to southern Mexico (about 100 km or so south of El Paso, I forget). They WILL find something wrong with the vehicle registration, or your passport or your driver's license or your insurance policy, or how many people are travelling with you, or SOMETHING! Once past that checkpoint, it's smooth sailing, all the way to Zacatecas and beyond. I cheated once and flew into Nicaragua (Managua) and that went pretty smoothly, but when we attempted to cross into Costa Rica, things got ugly, in the bureaucratic sense. I don't know what kind of budget you two were on . . . but a $24 hotel room (pretty nice) seems quite reasonable. We're frugal, also, when we go to Mexico City, but our (admittedly) four-star hotel was only $65 a night in a pretty good section of town (not well known). But we didn't stay in that room, except for sleeping and showering. The rest of the time was travelling on the Metro (6 pesos, or about 30 cents) anywhere you want to go in that massive city. Cheap, fast, clean, and --come on--we hear about pickpockets or worse wherever we go, don't we? Plus, Mexican street food is just that--served streeside, cheap and delicious beyond anything my wife and I have EVER tasted. I must say that Buenos Aires is also a great city/bargain, and, really, so is Santiago, Chile. In my mind, these three cities put the Big Apple to shame. But, again, I marvel at your sense of adventure! Good on you. :o)
Thanks. It's always flattering to be complimented from a fellow traveler. Our budget was $50usd a day for everything, so with the cost of doing back to back border crossings and all that driving we were definitely already behind on the budget. A few nights of wild camping on the beach and cooking for ourselves and we always caught back up though.
Mexican food is the best for sure.

Thank you for another great video. I find it a little depressing that the boarder crossings in South America are made to be as difficult and trying as possible for tourists. If tourism is such a boon to the local economies of central and south America, there needs to be a comprehensive streamlining and formalization for driving across the boarder. This along with the crime and police graft taints what should be a life affirming, cultural exchange trip of adventure and exploration. These crossings send a message to gringos like me that says "just stay home and spend your dollars in the USA because we refuse to make the process of entering/exiting our country straightforward although we probably could." Question: with all the issues in the USA southern boarder/wall issues, are you finding any animosity as Americans traveling in Central/South Am? Please be safe in your travels!
I agree with you Martin. A lot of deterrents to overlanding internationally. I would risk it if Matt and Amy took me by the hand though. I'd trust their guidance. The rewards of exploring central and south america sure would be worth it. Lifetime memories!!!
No extra animosity from that. My theory is that people aware of USA/Mexico politics are educated enough to realize that we are just people, just like them, we don't always agree with everything our positions do or say. Most people in non touristy areas are either uninterested in us or are happy to see us and excited to share a cultural exchange. I feel like the most common place to find animosity is in touristy areas that have had lots of tourism for years and some people resent the tourist for bringing change to the area.
As far as the borders go... I don't pretend to understand the politics and history behind any of the budgetary spending going on in these countries. We did see efforts being made with technology at the Costa Rican borders and at the Honduras/guatemala border, but the tech they had wasn't really being integrated very well. Presumably the "stamp guy" was given a computer and never trained how to use it. I just don't think that many of these borders get a lot of tourist traffic coming through so they don't see a financial motivation.
Getting to experience Central America was totally worth the border hassles. I don't know if you should trust our guidance though after watching this episode. We forgot to claim the dog at one border and had to back track for the car insurance at the next one 😂 You just have to think of the border crossings like scavenger hunts. Find all the stuff and you win access to the next country 😅

Can you drive from San Diego California to Brazil
Theoretically, yes, but you would have to go though the Darien Gap. It is a strip of mountains and marshland separating Panama from Colombia with no roads and it is home to guerrillas and traffickers. So it's not recommended or easy.
Too many borders too much paperwork everybody looking for money over there
As US citizens it can take some getting used to. It can be kind of nice though when you are looking at a map of the country and the nest place you want to go looks super far away, then you realize we could drive across the entire country in 8 hours on bad roads and that place we want to go is only 1/4 of the way across the country.
I used to work at the US embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and I fell in love with the place. I was thinking about being an expat and live in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for 3 months and I thought about driving down there in order to have my vehicle. I have Virginia Plates on my 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500. Would you say my vehicle has a high risk to be broken in or stolen because it is a nice truck with US plates on the vehicle? Would you suggest getting local plates or something else. I noticed because you still had your California plates on your truck and was wondering if you ran into any issues or threats.
If you are going to move there, then I believe you must import your vehicle. The Temporary import permit for traveling is only good for 30-90 days(different people have had different experience with how much time they are given)
That being said, we didn't have any issues or threats.

We've been to most states in Mexico. It's such a big country, there is still so much we haven't seen. We have also been to every country in Central America, but not to South America

How do you get your hair done while on the road
I(matt) go to whatever local barber is convenient. I've found it to be a fun cultural experience and I'm not to picky about my hair, so if I pay $2 usd and they make my hair shorter I'm happy. Amie asked around on travel groups and found a lady in Antigua, guatemala that she liked. She also tried an expat living in nicaragua, but wasn't as pleased.
Does it cost alot to take a vehicle through each country?
Each temporary vehicle import permit (good for 30-180 days depending on the country) cost around $20 USD.

20 to 30 dollars is expensive for a hotel?? Am I missing something? I pay 6 times that for an average hotel in Canada
Our daily budget during this trip was $50 usd. That was for accommodation, food, fuel, car repairs, activities... everything for 2 people and a dog. So, $25 was a lot for us to spend on a place to sleep. We probably averaged somewhere under $10 a night for accommodations.
HELP !!!! We are 10 days away from driving from the US to Nicaragua, so going through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and into Nicaragua. We just got updated rabies shots for our 3 dogs and getting USDA health certificates. BUT, now we are being told that the rabies shot has to be at least 30 days old when entering Honduras and Nicaragua !?!?!?!
This would delay our trip 3 weeks.

I can't say for sure what the border agents will do. Every traveler has a different experience at every crossing, but I would just go if I was you. We were traveling around through Central America for nearly 2 years and used the same outdated health certificate from USA the entire time. Nobody cared.
If you get to the Guatemalan border and they don't let you cross, then enjoy a week in beautiful Chiapas 🤷♂️

Our ATT phone plan works through USA and Mexico at no extra charge. For Central America we switched out SIM cards for each country that we intended to spend more than a month in
