Good to see you guys hamming it up with Alex! Nice work guys! Cant wait for TFLoffroad to do their full review.
Always impressed with Tommy’s ability to rattle off vehicle specs in a natural and engaging way while following directions and driving some fairly technical trails. Well done.
Another great video from Tommy. Hopefully we see more of those.
Nice job Tommy, your work is much better without the boss butting in and ranting.
Couldn’t agree any more. 👏🏻
Agree! Dad gets to be a little much at times.
Daamn, cold in here.
I’ve been waiting for TFLs Trailhawk review!
Thank you.
Now waiting for the 4Xe trailhawk review.
same here!
Same!
It was fun to watch all UA-camrs gathered together testing the GCs around. Loved this trailhawk test.
Love the cooperation with Alex on Autos…
Great to see Alex on Autos there with ya...!
Thank you so much Tommy and TFL for highlighting our training and program for veterans in need!
Love when Alex makes an appearance in your videos, awesome dude.
Kudos to Jeep for keeping Grand Cherokee somewhat trail focused.
Having said that, I don’t see many WL owners taking their $60,000 luxo boats crawling over rocks.
Get some bigger tires on these and you can do basic stuff.
I am probably one of the few who use my Grand Cherokee off-road, not so much by choice but for work I need to tow a trailer with all my equipment to various jobsite that are sometimes several miles from any paved roads. I have been extremely impressed how capable it was getting over some decent sized rocks, and deep mud all while towing around 3000 pounds. Everything is stock except the tires which are all terrain Goodyear Wranglers.
There will be some. But in 5 years you’ll see them being bought second hand for over landing and off roading.
These things will never keep up with an older jeep Cherokee or wrangler with a few mods, but hey at least you'll have a heated steering wheel for when you get stuck.
@@danb.709 lol u sound like a clown
Can't wait to see TH on the slip test! Responded quickly there.
Always fun to see you interacting with your colleagues out in the wild. lol Well done review Tommy. :)
I took my 2017 WK TrIailhawk on Elephant Hill in 2017. But it came with rock rails and I used em!
The new Grand Cherokee is very nice!!! Engine options, trim levels, & features are excellent.
Would be nice to see this with a rear locker at least and even a tuned down interior version with still all the fancy offroad features
Keep up the great work TFL Crew. Question: Does the 4XE GC Trailhawk come with a receiver from factory? I can’t get an answer on the Jeep website. Thanks!
Good looking vehicle. It actually tackled some decent terrain…
Loved Alex's cameo!
Nice red durango minivan video
Outstanding video as always. Anyone else disappointed that some center screen settings look like its from Windows 95?
2022 Trailhawk is equipped with Qudra Drive 2, that should have Eaton ELSD , which is limited slip with addition of true hydraulic mechanical locker engaging automatically on further slip, sort of like limited slip plus g80... Then Eaton describes that it can be also locked by button
Edit: yea, Grand Cherokee unfortunately does not utilize button locking
Help me understand why it’s not a true locker compared to let’s say a Pneumatic air locker or E locker
@@Thecarexchangepodcast it is true locker, that's what i wrote, this is combo of lsd and locker , just GC don't have button to manually switch it, so it mechanically locks only by sensors inputs
Ok, sorry, I misunderstood you then
Need to see you compare the Grand and Defender
"full skids" Shows exposed aluminum rear differential... Lets call them, mostly full skids.
I am REALLLLY looking forward to the 4xe version of the GC! I want to see how far that will go off road along with seeing its on road mannerisms.
I would like one. I think the overland model would be my choice. 🇨🇦
Alex is the star. That driving was sweet my dude.
Waiting for these to come out in the 4xe to trade in my 2021 high altitude
Two row is the Christmas version: Noel
This is more amusing than it should be haha
😁😀😂
That piano black though..every CSI's wet dream.
The WK Trailhawk came with the added bonus of the SRT's superior seats.
Are the seats in the new one any different than the other trim levels? Don't know, no one mentions it.
I think that the lenght of the steering tie rod is the major reason restricting
the articulation of the front suspension.
Didn’t even think about crash testing the recovery hooks. Makes sense
Even though I’m not able to afford one this is my favorite vehicle.
It should come with front and rear sway bar disconnects and real lockers and taller tire sidewalls
Sway bar disconnect.. wow!!! That's a tremendous feature.
The 85k LandCruiser has them.. KDSS front and rear, automatic function.
Does the 4runner not have KDSS?
@@damilolaakanni They do
What is that sensor on the first of the 7 slots grill (counting from driver side)? Is it Lidar? It's definitely not the front camera which sits in the middle of the 4th slot.
I think you're wrong about the rear diff locker, Tommy. Would you mind checking with Jeep to be sure? I'm quite sure it's the same as the WK and WK2, which is LSD normally, but when in 4Lo, the computer will eventually lock it if needed. So, it's a combo LSD/Auto Locker.
And I'd still rather have my WJ for off-roading. :-)
To make it REALLY AWESOME cut the wheel wells, a 6 inch lift and put on the 37's and you have a Bronco-buster with a lot more INTERIOR COMFORT OPTIONS built-in! Cheaper to buy too!
v
This vs 4Runner? What're you picking?
My Impala has a sway bar disconnect, called rust
Now this is much more of a direct competitor to the 4Runner than a wrangler. Wrangler is purpose built, the Cherokee and the 4Runner are suvs with a side off off-road capability. Seeing a video of the two compared would be interesting
2:35 that’s because a locker biases torque. If you lift a wheel it can no longer generate torque so the opposite wheel develops 100% of the drive torque.
.
It transfers torque the same way as a locker. Just uses friction instead of interference to provide the lockup. So the Jeep ELSD will provide 100% of torque so long as it doesn’t exceed the lockup strength which was very high on the WK and WKii
and if only they’d bring back the front ELSD like on the wj and wk. sigh
@@johnnavitsky7273 That really made the system Jeep best 4wd. Yeah the rubi had lockers, but the WK QDII would auto lock on the fly and even with 33s and pretty extreme loads wouldn't slip. I wish the Wrangler/Gladiator had a higher level trim that had 3 auto ELSDs. Not a rubi model, since that's more hardcore use, but a system where if the steering wheel is straight in rock crawl model it would lock all 3 diffs, but once the steering angle is put in the front diff unlocks progressively while the rear diff unlocks much slower.
Did they bring the 3.0l Diesel back to the Grand Cherokee yet?
I am curious if the Ford Explorer timberline could do it? I would like to see you guys testing it out. Haven’t seen any good videos on timberline
@@byronlarson5534 true I agree. I would like to see them testing at its maximum to see how far it could go. But I mean ford already has bronco sport so I don’t know if they would make a explorer that is off road capable like that jeep.
@@sethgleason1749 the bronco sport is by no means off road capable, like not at all. The Bronco however is a different story.
I loved my 2018 WK2 Trailhawk but had to get rid of it since the V8 was killing me at the pump. Looking forward to the 4xe. Although Im hoping they bring back the Off road 2 package for the Limited. I had a 2015 Limited with Off-road 2 package that had all of the equipment of the TH.
I wis they came with the 6.2 supercharged engine. The 5.7 its not that bad. I hv a 17 hemi wish it had more power
@@danielsolano5288 - To me, the V-6 has sufficient torque, linear torque, and a bit better mileage. If I rent a Jeep, I hope it’s a hemi; but for my personal Jeep, it’s a V-6 ...
It's just that prices are much higher than just three years ago. My dad's '18 Trailhawk started at $43K. It jumped to $47K by '21 and this new one is $51,270. It's like $9K more now (including the below). New platform, more refined, but practically, there's not a lot of difference in features. And the drivetrain is carry-over!
Add the V8 and lux group and you're pushing $60K for TH. Plus, in '18 they didn't charge for paint ($400 now), and destination charge is obviously a profit center ($1800 now, $1100 in '18). Unreasonable gouging for what cannot be described as Toyota levels of quality. No thanks.
I was so interested in the new trailhawk... untill Jeep released the options for it on their website, the trailhawk cannot be speced with the high end equipment (such as HUD and the like) which is the stuff I really wanted in a new JGC but I wouldnt get another JGC unless it was the trailhawk, currently have a 2016 Limited with 2.5" lift larger tires and some minor additions to take on tougher trails, seems like it will be better to just get a 2020 or 2021 trailhawk CPO for much less.
typically you can get all the off-road options that are in the trailhawk in an overland
Question: in the previous generation JGCs the lower fascia could be "unbuttoned" for removal fairly easily. Is this still the case with the new; especially the Trailhawk? TIA
Good question
I was just hear for the sway bar disconnect in action… still waiting
If I’m not mistaken, the trailhawk comes with side rock rails
Hey FCA, offer all interior colors across all trims, hate black and most especially in the Southwest!
To bad you can’t get air suspension right now. If you try to build one it doesn’t let you option it due to supply shortages
The WK Grand Cherokee with QDII had a ELSD that could lock as well. Jeep is just advertising it differently this time for sales lol.
I've never seen anyone pat a tow hook so much in my life lol. JK, enjoy the videos!
That'll do tow hook. That'll do.
Lol
he loves the red tow hook joke, played out tommy
Can someone please explain to me why the Wrangler Unlimited has a tow limit of 3500lbs but this has a few thousand more? They’re close in WB (118.4/121.7) and similar weights when equipped with the 3.5
Air suspension on a $60k Chrysler product, I'm sure there'll be no problems with this once the warranty expires.
You are lame, have fun with your ?????
Are we going to pretend the outgoing Grand Cherokee hasn’t had air suspension for the past 10 years?
@@tylerdm1842 and those are also unreliable junk
TFL are we still hearing rumors about a straight-six 3.0L gas turbo for the Jeep, Dodge, and RAM in the future? Would like to see that in the new Jeep GC WL74 in the near future. We have a 3.6L V6 GC WK2 but would like to see that new 3.0L turbo in the future.
I want Summit Reserve interior on a Trailhawk
Why was the diesel not offered?
While I am not a huge fan of the overall size on the new GC increasing both in width and length, I commend Jeep for adding some off-road goodness and all around capability to it. Really pleased to see the Grand Cherokee maintaining good off-road credibility for what the platform is. Tommy - has TFL ever asked Jeep why they didn't bring back the solid axles on the Grand Cherokee? I get most driving is on-road and the independent suspension is more comfortable, but I used to have a WJ Overland and currently have a WK2 Overland and honestly have never noticed any major difference while on-road between those two.
@@byronlarson5534 Totally. Have a Wrangler too so they already got me. I'm sure the answer ultimately is Jeep just wanted to optimize for on-road driving but having owned both a WJ and a WK2, I don't notice any major difference in the on-road ride - so for me I'd love to just be able to ask Jeep, given that lack of noticeable difference in the on road drive between the IS and solid axle, why not keep the solid axles for better off-roading too. Like I said, sure I can guess the answer but oh well. haha
@@anthonywarren3656
A friend's grand cherokee wk2 3.6 motor 2010, now the mileage is 565 thousand km !! no problem !! durable suvs!!
Is there a diesel??
I’m pretty sure there’s no 3/8 steel anywhere on the JGC, Trailhawk or otherwise..
I wish they had included a version of the Bronco’s Trail Turn Assist.. That’s not so technically difficult to implement and pretty useful in some situations.
Glad they included the disconnecting sway bars! Curious how it might affect CV joint life, though it’s probably speed limited pretty low, so shouldn’t be too bad.
So the dude was lying?
Yeah I laughed about him saying 3/8 inch steel. My guess is 3/16 max. I’m not even sure any aftermarket skid is 3/8 inch thick steel. They would weigh a ton.
I bet that GC Trailhawk will give them A LOT fewer problems than that Land Rover Defender did.
I don't think I'd want the v6. I mean it's a great motor, but the 345 you get way more tq down low. The inline 6 would he good though.
Why piano black why!!!!! I don’t understand why they think people like piano black.
this will never happen but i would love to see a stripped down trailhawk WL. Love the confidence of having quadra drive/lift with all the offroad goodies but I definitely wouldnt need mostly everything else this trailhawk offers (sunroof, big screens, vented seats, etc).
So no eco diesel? My 2016 Chevy Colorado with the diesel is outstanding. 27 to 30 mpg’s… hw.
I love my 2011 grand Cherokee limited , but it's turned into a money pit. It goes extremely well everywhere and in any weather, but everytime I turn around I'm having to spend $100 here and $200 there, and that's just for parts. Last week I had to send $500 just for an alternator, and the only thing wrong with the old one was Chrysler just pressed on the pulley without using a keyway and the pulley was just spinning around the alternator shaft and not turning the alternator!! I'm starting to figure out that jeep stands for just empty every pocket!
Air suspension, like trying to climb around on uneven ground without bending your knees.
A head to head with an Outback Wilderness would be really interesting, seems like that’s the main competition and I’d still probably go with the Wilderness for what I do.
What do you do?
CVT 😂😂😂
Usually, Jeep will release optional Mopar rock rails (either during initial launch or post-launch) for pretty much all of their vehicles since the mid-2010's. I expect no different for this new generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Red tow hook jokes never get old
Ya know in response to what you said, that it’s not real off-roading because they wouldn’t put it in a situation that it couldn’t handle. - Most of the time, with other manufacturers, I absolutely agree. The places they take you guys, is better described as a dirt road, than off roading. - This however…. I think we have to give credit where credit is due. that’s a serious terrain. Any one off roading there would have spotters guiding them. That doesn’t cheapen what it’s done, or where its driving. - Kudos to Jeep!
What happened to off roading with a 77 4 door mercury cougar with mud tires on the back lol
With all your friends in the car free unstuck tools lol
Now they need to make an off road Grand Cherokee SRT...
Tommy, this or a Defender 110?
IMO, this over the Defender 110. The defender...is a Land Rover. Enough said.
Reliability is going to be about the same I would chose Defender for looks, payload and towing.
How is this more than a 4Runner TRD pro? Doesn’t seem worth that much at all.
I think you should be asking why is the TRD pro overpriced?
@@barbecuetechtips6024 At MSRP it really doesn’t seem overpriced.
Just take a look at the interior compared to the 4 runner it's not even close. Off road capability the 4 runner is nice since it has a solid rear axle but in every other aspect this grand cherokee has way more. I agree with the guy above why is the trd pro so overpriced having such a basic outdated uncomfortable interior?
@@barbecuetechtips6024 is this a joke? Pros are 20k cheaper than this giant pile of shit that is one of the most unreliable little soccer mom vehicles ever made
Just like a Landover... 3rd owner will be the one taking it off road... Cherokee trail hawk does come with a real rear locker... And last gen had rock rails... 🤔🤔🤔
Stellantis should have set up their media event in a shopping mall parking lot, with the invitees testing the vehicle’s ability to use all of it’s ‘tech’ to get it perfectly parked within a parking space. FAR more useful than showing it’s capabilities in a place that none of them will ever go.
I really love when the new version of a vehicle is ugly. Makes the previous version cheaper and still get the better looking vehicle
6:00 Full skid plates front to back? Yet your underbody video clip shows that the Transmission pan and Rear Diff are fully exposed! I have 5mm skid plates front to back on my ‘14 Summit but that’s the aftermarket for you! I wish MoPar would at least “option” more robust protection. After getting my 2014 setup the way I like there is little incentive for me to buy a “new” vehicle with less features. I don’t want more electronics I want more hardware! Even though it is a mall-crawler.
This is one of the things that I've never understood not putting skid plates under the engine. They put plastic cover. For my 17 Trailhawk, I had to buy some more after market skid plates.
I wish my trailhawk had a
6.2 supercharged engine.
The 5.7 its alright wish it had more power
Your lucky it even has the 5.7 . Be grateful
Lol I have the 3.6 Trailhawk
It almost looks like the suspension is barely moving at all. I know independent suspension can do better than that.... Bronco and modified Tacos show that on the daily
@@byronlarson5534 yes you are right, but I'm not talking about total chassis articulation. Look at how much the front suspension can move on those things. Most Taco owners when removing the front sway bar, have to get longer brake lines because of how far the front wheels can now move. They can stuff front wheels into the wheelwells
Does the 2022 jeep grand Cherokee only have 2 row
There is a 2 row and 3 row version
Disappointed in Jeep not offering the more off road capable quadratrac II system as an option on lower end models. I realize not everyone needs or wants it but for anyone that does actually want to go off road, you have to spend a lot more to get a higher line model.
Tell that to Toyota with their LC lineup in NA. Speaking of total BS.
What do you mean off-road pages "like land rover"? Jeep had had off road pages for years!
I believe that's Andres computer Romans sitting behind because of the TATRA -RUSSIAN TRUCKS LOGO???? 😂
As Jeep SLOWLY desensitizes Wrangler owners to like independent suspension ;-).
I actually think it's a fact that ALL Jeeps have fully independent suspension except for the Wrangler.
For me, the definition of a Jeep includes 4x4, a high and low range transfer case, tow hooks front and rear, skid plates and at least a limited slip axle in the rear. Sing range and no tow hooks, disqualified!
No, thank you. I’ll rather buy a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro or a 4 Runner TRD Pro for that price, something reliable and dependable. Had a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Altitude package, bought it brand new and it started to give me problems at 6k miles. Ended up trading it in at 22,000 miles cause it was already leaking oil from the engine and got a 2021 4Runner Limited night shade edition and my wife loves it, haven’t had any problems with it as of now with 9k miles like the Jeep!!!!.
Where’s the 3 ltr diesel that all the premium brands sell globally
I get off reading.. but, seriously, If I were going a place like this, I would bring mules
I just bought a 21 Trailhawk. I love the styling on the 22 but the interior kills me. The turn wheel gear selector and being “overly luxurious” killed it for me.
Personally I don’t want my Jeep to be a luxury vehicle I want it to be at least somewhat brawny on the inside.

Am I the only one that hates the rotary shifter dial? I disliked it years ago when RAM was using it on their trucks and now it seems most new vehicles are doing it. It looks like a hockey puck.
After one year now, I’m kinda used to it. Not a big fan of all the electronics.
But one of these days (when not paying attention) I’m going to put my truck thru the garage wall instead of backing out.
I know it’s coming.
The worst offender here is Lincoln. They have piano key- like buttons under the infotainment screen for the gear selector. And it's not just one car, it's all of them. I wonder how much space they'll create in the center console, and why they feel their customers really need space there.
I really like that puck now. It frees up a ton of interior space. I've had my Ram 1500 for just over a year now and it's a great vehicle. Very very happy with it.
I'm all for mechanical linkage, but if it's electronic anyway i chose space saving.
Why is everybody sweating about a sway bar disconnect on a $59,000 SUV when Wranglers go to $100,000.
Does anyone know the reliability of the 3.6 litre? Have the company turned the corner and not producing inferior engines?
The 3.6l Pentastar is as reliable as they come and has proven itself over the years.
