The Cali Texas alliance seems non sensical at first but if both states seceded for different reasons, and were both attacked by Washington as a result, they would likely put their differences aside; at least for a time.
Between Texas and California they represent a huge portion of the US GDP. If Washington goes into a sovereign debt crisis they might not be able to afford to fund all the federal military.
Moreover, Cali being blue and Texas being red might prompt many other states to join them; the film suggests 17 other states that secede as well. Rather than geographical, or even left versus right, the nation might divide between loyalist and separatist factions.
This is speculation but since the movie takes place in a future USA and Texas has been shifting towards blue policies (partially due to the mass shootings) and the fact that each year we lose about 2 mil boomer voters (Republican party's largest voting block) and gain about 4 mil Gen Z voters (who tend to vote blue) I think the movie is predicting Texas will become a blue state and since California has the biggest population in the USA, is one of the richest US states, and supplies a lot of the USA with food (which can be used against a fascist regime by cutting off food supply), CA has most major social media platforms under their control to cut off communication or spy on the enemies, major manufacturing factories, and Texas has loads of weapons. (CA does too just harder to own) That it is possible the two states could work together like this one day in case of a fascist president trying to hold onto power. (Most likely Republican based off of Jan 6th)
The Capitol of Texas is Liberal. They have the most important city in the state. They are taking over Texas with their companies, employees and residents . The real take over while creating chaos and confusion with open boarders
That would be even more non-sensical because there ain't no way that either of those states would follow the laws of the other.

But why would both states secede simultaneously to oppose Washington? That makes no sense. It is either one of the two states' favorites will hold office in Washington.
In Alex Garland I trust -- the guy hasn't made a bad film yet, either as a screenwriter or as a director. Holy crap, this movie looks amazing.

In every reaction I've seen there's always the comment about how TX and CA unifying is unbelievable, but if you had a 3rd term president that had essentially become a dictator that is exactly what you'd want to see happen. The states and the people unifying, despite personal/political beliefs, to remove that person from the office.
I think, from what I'm reading online, that this is a few years in the future when a president has forced himself into a 3rd term, and that Texas either had a coup d'état, or California and Texas were the first to decide to secede from the Union, and the president decides he cannot allow that to happen, so Texas and California decided to band together to fight, "enemy of my enemy" type thing.
The only way TX and CA align is with entirely different populations for one or both. Garland is smart so I assume the idea is that by whenever the movie is set CA and TX will both be heavily majority Latino with a shared largely Mexican heritage. That is a demographic inevitability at some date so it would make sense in a "speculative history."
Plus Mexico and the Cartels would most likely fund them.

Alex Garland usually makes trippy sci-fi. For this one, Garland himself actually time travelled to 2050, wrote a "based on a true story" film, then brought the film back to 2023 to show it to us in our final days.

I hate to say this, but because of all the socio-political events that transpired these last few years, I agree with you. I don't know what will happen shortly after the election this year, but I won't be surprised if the movie becomes our reality.

Noone in their right mind would want civil war. I know I don't. But we as a country cannot keep turning a blind eye to the government trampling peoples rights more and more everyday. Also the fact that the government refuses to secure the us border and giving illegals money and phones and food stamps and whatnot while everyday americans are struggling to make ends meet with the price of everything so high. So, noone wants civil war but if things continue the way they are and the American people keep getting more and more divided it might just be inevitable that CW2.0 breaks out.

I feel this vibe you know like before WW2 hit, these are not happy times and especially not for the younger generations. The economy worldwide is doing poorly, we just got out of a mass pandemic with lots of lives lost and jobs lost, housing market worldwide is fucked, there's a war in Europe and the US is extremely divided. It's a tinderbox waiting to catch fire.

Odd timing for a movie like this, considering how divided we really are. Part of me feels strongly connected to one side because I relate on a personal level and is where I grew up. Another part of me feels the other side is actually right and calling something “inclusíon”, while excluding people specifically because of race is completeły wrong.

The movie is phenomenal but I see a lot of people missing the point of the movie. I've seen this movie IRL from people debating topics online. This movie just takes it to its ultimate conclusion. The point of the movie is the extreme polarization we have in the U.S. until you get so caught up you lose your humanity. It's not about the political right or left and making it about that would have ruined the point. It's about erasing one's own humanity. Which is why the girl was pretty much the villain at the end.
At least these guys realize how this is adding fuel to a massive fire. This is beyond f$+-@d. Not going to watch it. We are already heading in that direction.
