The best line in this film is when Jack is told that the dock is off limits to civilians, and his reply is "I'm terribly sorry i didnt know, if i see one i shall inform you immediately"

"One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness." "Though it seems enough to condemn him." I didn't know this the first time I watched but the reason Jack says that is because the reason he was labeled a pirate was because he freed slaves he was suppose to transport. The good deed of freeing slaves condemned him to be branded as a pirate for the rest of his life. I really wish they kept the deleted scene from at worlds end explaining the situation.
@@KylarStern244 yeah, the first three movies are so good, the fourth one is ok as a side story, but the fifth one is just a big expensive mess that feels like someone wrote the script in one night
You got my favorite line “Best start believing in ghost stories Ms. Turner...You’re in one” when the music cuts for a second after he says it just UGH SO GOOD
Being a sailor in the US navy myself, this is absolutely true, i get terrible vertigo and dizzy spells the first few days back on land after a long time out to sea, and yes that shit sucks
3:56 this also takes a new meaning if you know why jack was branded as a pirate in the first place. He used to work for the British navy until he freed a ship transporting 100 slaves hence the "people ain't cargo mate" line and the reason why Jack's soul is worth 100 souls
quick note: already present in Barbossa's mannerism is his desire to be classy. His big words, his fancy hat, him dining with class; it all alludes to his wish to be of higher standing.
Barbossa without the hat is so off putting for me. There is just something missing. Geoffrey Rush has said that the costume helped a lot with the character, so it makes sense. He has a certain swagger and confidence with it on.
I love how Elizabeth's father is constantly clueless. Dude hear cannon fire, saw lights in the distance, and instead of heading for cover he goes "Ooo pretty"
My favorite line: Me, I am dishonest and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it is the honest one's you've got to watch out for.
The soldiers closing their eyes while firing is actually historically accurate. It was to prevent the sparks from the flintlock from burning your eyes. Edit sidenote: It was very common for naval officers to be in their early teens back in the day. Depending on Norrington's rank he might just be a couple years older than Elizabeth.
11:21 man, you could call the cgi/special effects in this movie "dated," and you'd be right, but GOD the transition from normal human to skeleton zombie is still ten out of goddamn TEN
I always took the "I became their Chief" story as an explanation of how quick Jack can learn a language and how his charisma gets men to follow him even though his mannerisms are so weird
If you follow the clues its heavily implied Sparrow was a Privateer at some point (and pretty much confirmed in a deleted scene) so it would make sense somewhat for him to be intelligent as many would be given some form of formal education and he would probably have learnt some languages along the way being a travelling man so hearing another cultures native tongue would be no problem as he probably could use other languages as basis.
"So what now, Jack Sparrow, are we to be two immortals, locked in a epic battle until judgement day and trumpets blow? Humm?!?!?" "...Or you could just surrender." --Jack vs. Hector... always a win.
I think that's what makes his rivalry with Jack all the more interesting and believable, both men may not look it but have incredible intellect. Barbosa just has a bit more of a cold heart than Jack does, and Jack is a bit more eccentric. A prime example of 2 different visions for the same product.
Can confirm as someone that's spent a bit a time sailing: You get used to accounting for the swaying so you do occasionally look drunk once you get on land again, or at least feel it.
I imagine it's like wearing heels for a stupidly long amount of time and taking them off suddenly. The weight distribution you used to counter and balance yourself whilst wearing heels just disappears and you feel like the ground is sinking beneath your feet.
THis movie still holds up when compared to the others. Mainly because while Johnny Depp was allowed to be weird, it was still the restrained kind that made it clear that while Jack acts like an idiot, he's actually insanely clever and a competent pirate.
@@NotMe6044 Yes. I will re-watch those over and over for the rest of my life. I could only bring myself to watch the fourth and fifth movies once each.
@@NotMe6044 Fair enough. Even if you liked it, that's cool. I'm just saying I personally am not a fan of those two movies. I do think 5 is better than 4, if only because it brings back most of the original cast.

missed the best moment of the film - elizabeth's fake-out with the coin, when she tricks the zombie pirates into admitting that they need it by pretending she'll drop it off the ship. her expression is a masterpiece
What I never go about that was the gold was able to call to them and they don't need to breathe so her dropping it would really be an inconvenience as they could just jump down and pick it back up
I can confirm that when you spent some time on a sailing vessel, walking on dry land is very weird in the beginning. You are used to countering all those movements and suddenly nothing moves anymore. Now I personally never walked funny because of it (although it sure feels like you are walking funny) but I've also never spent more than 1 month on a sailing vessel. It's not hard to imagine that if, like you say, you spent all your life on sailing ships you'd walk a little funny. Also he's basically always drunk, that probably doesn't help either.
For some reason once in a blue moon I'll feel like I'm on a ship that's rocking fiercely and I have to stop until it passes. Don't know why but it's weird
Its actually an extreme form of sea sickness called land sickness where the roles get essentially reversed . The body adapts to the sea and hence develops an unusual sense of balance . How ever the reason why jacks mannerisms is so weird is because of madness caused due to heat stroke on the island he was moored at by Barbosa driving him ever so slightly mad this is spelled out by mister Gibbs when will Turner asks why he is so and if you happen to watch the 5th movie about captain slazar young jack in the flashback does not have said mannerisms which is an amazing touch to detail
My dad talks about a particular time he went to a movie theatre after being on a ship for a good while (he was in the navy) and realized he was zig zagging down the hall because usually that was how he could balance on ship.
I found it odd in my most recent watch, because I learned recently that apparently, there were superstitions back in those times that bananas on boats were bad luck, and Mr. Gibbs is a superstitious man, so I wonder why he never called jack out for it.
It even gets crazier when you learn that norrington has a life dept to Jack's father long story short norrington's father who was too a navy officer came into blows with captain Teague and some point little james fell of the ship and nearly drowned but captain Teague saved him something along the lines of pirates honor james's father was not happy about (he was a hardass against pirates and did everything in his power to pass the very same mentality to his son)
Jack: This girl... how far are you willing to go to save her? Will: I'd die for her Jack: Oh good! No worries then That exchange is gold. Shoulda been a win.
Keanu Reeves is perfect imo as Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk 2077 but I'd love to see Johnny Depp's take on Johnny Silverhand if it's in the same vein as Jack Sparrows personality and inspirations from rock EDIT: Grammar
Will: Where is Elizabeth: Jack: She's save, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word, really. Except Elizabeth, who is in fact a woman. THAT is gold.
About Jack's weird walking on land: It's called "sea legs" just to throw out a term. It's what sailors call the learned ability to walk normally on a boat and shift your balance to combat the sway. It's not that hard once you get the hang of it, but does throw your walking off to suddenly transition from sea to land, as is seen with Jack.
Except for that whole stays-corset-ordeal... I am still so mad about the fuckduckery there. There is ni way she would have passed out due to wearing stays.
I personally love the moment after Jack saves Elizabeth and then threatens her so he can escape. As Elizabeth is giving him back his accessories and putting his sash/belt around him, he leans his head over her shoulder and smirks at Norrington, like he's teasing him, "Yeah, your girl's got her arms around me-and there's nothing you can do about it."
The tone of this movie is nearly indescribable... Dark but humorous, eloquent but dramatic, over-the-top but also even subtle in its own strange way, and hilariously funny. It's just so very distinct, and that's part of why I love it so much. Thanks for covering it.
Pirates of the Caribbean. A great movie series that made Johnny Depp’s acting talents shine. Also the film that gave me the imagination of being a pirate at a young age. There was not, in my opinion, nothing wrong and or sinful of the films. They were and always will be a true treasure of a series in Disney. Just wished the last one was a bit better as the first film was.
Yh, in my opinion the first 3 felt like a trilogy. The fourth one I don’t mind because it has good action and good music, although I was surprised when I first saw it that will, Elizabeth or the Pearl weren’t there. The fifth one is meh for me because throughout the whole film jack is drunk and Yh he does like his rum but he is a smart man and he would never give away his compass for a bottle of rum. And it also clashes with the second film due to how jack got his compass. In dead mans chest, it was said that tia dalma gave jack the compass but in the fifth one it was given to him by his former captain🤷🏼♂️.
Taylor Paton i actually thought 4 was a really good movie, especially music and action, it was just lacking ib the ither lain characters. 5 was a really good story, and i liked caryina etc. The problem was jack. His goddamn voice was wrong, let alone him being drunk constantly. Although the writing for his part and amber didnt help
Theo Rodgers exactly. I don’t mind the story in the fifth film, it’s just that jack wasn’t himself and it clashed with the lore. I enjoy the fourth film and would watch It over again like 1-3, but it still doesn’t live up to 1-3 in my opinion.
Taylor Paton yeah pretty much, hopefully 6 which should have davy jobes based on the end credits will be good! Although 4 had an end credits of angelica getting the voodoo doll of jack, which hasnt been mentioned yet
Theo Rodgers I don’t know if 6 will have Johnny Depp though because Disney fired him due to all of the physical assault things with him and amber. I’ve heard they’re having a women replace him! I’m not sexist and all but no one can replace Johnny as sparrow especially not a women. If they make another they batter have Johnny back as jack, and yes I would like them to go more into the voodoo doll and jones.
This is honestly the ultimate easy to watch adventure movie. It hits all the clichés in just the right to make it both familiar and exciting, but most importantly it's just so damn fun.
That's exactly how I feel. I wouldn't consider it my favourite movie overall, because it lacks the the depth and slower, more emotionally charged parts of other great movies, but that's just because they aren't supposed to be there, not because the film makers did something wrong. It's just always a great experience watching this.
@@Pivot-Shorts My problem with that movie is that Tom Cruise doesn't seem like the character he's playing. Based on his interactions with others it feels like he was meant to be younger

I had noticed the Norrington compass before, and it made me realize that he is what I call “a standard movie sideofficer” meaning he WANTS the girl, but it’s his job (in this case, hanging pirates) that always pushes the girl to the back seat
Maxim Selesia Being a “standard sideofficer” doesn’t mean you can’t have a good arc. In fact, if you see enough of them to realize they are a “standard sideofficer” they generally get a pretty damn good arc. It just tells you where they start It just means that
I had never realised that Barbossa watching Elizabeth eat was less him being an evil womanising creep and more so just the fact that he hasn’t tasted or felt since before he was cursed Being deprived of basic human functions for so long and possibly not being able to be released from it would make anyone mad
Even though he gets into his character too much, we got to give Johnny Depp some credit for making Captain Jack Sparrow so awesome with a giant bowlful of comedy, as he does in the movie and the entire series.
Up until that movie pretty much every character he portrayed had that same bored and slightly depressed expression throughout the film / show. The overacting was a refreshing change.
@@SarahAndreaRoycesChannel Not entirely. Ed Wood, for example, or Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. But yeah, his purely dramatic roles did tend to be a bit dour. (Donnie Brasco especially comes to mind...)
One of the details I remember is that though the rest of the pirates were CG'd up, they purposefully kept the actor's actual eyes whenever they could to keep them looking more "real".
Let me tell you, When you have been at sea for more than 3 months, hard solid ground becomes very wobbly. And it takes more than a week to acclimate to having solid ground underfoot
The ground feels wobbly after only a day at sea, I don't dare to imagine how it would feel after months... Maybe the stereotype that sailors are always drinking at the bar is because they always walked like Jack and fell over every time they came back on land ^^
I gotta be honest, since I started watching you I’ve viewed movies in a COMPLETELY different way and I’ve enjoyed them so much. My father and I always watched movies together and he would always notice the details like you. So, I don't know yet whether you talk about this as part 2 has yet to be released, but there's some more weight to Jack's line "Though it seems enough to condemn him" There's a deleted scene between Jack and Beckett in film three where it's revealed Jack used to work for the East India Company, but was branded as a pirate after refusing to carry slaves for them - which is likely what Jack is referring to in the first film
Thank you for giving Geoffrey Rush his due credit. He has always been my favorite part of this movie. He is absolutely the ultimate pirate. I mean, that voice. Perfect.
Way back when I realized she kept the cursed gold coin around her neck, but it was trapped underneath her corset and that’s why the pirates weren’t drawn to her, I thought “this film is incredible”. Subtle storytelling, where every element had a purpose. The corset wasn’t just for a throwaway joke or two, it was a way to introduce the cursed gold coin without having the pirates attack straight away. What seemed like a plot hole actually had a very conscious reason that it was implemented.
another youtuber has made a video on it, and mentions how every scene does 2 things at once. usually furthering the story and either establishing rules or setting up further scenes.
There's actually an hour long video essay online about how this movie is "Accidentally Genius". I would argue its intentionally genius, but still, I love this movie so much!
Sparrow and Barbossa are my fave characters. I never really hate Barbossa since beginning. He is an interesting character with such tragic story. And then he came back and make everything more interesting. Love his relationship with Sparrow lol
I think a win got missed: Elizabeth stabbing Barbosa is ballsy and badass, especially when she knows she's stranded on the ship with a crew. And just a bit rash, considering the crew is that crew who had literally been enjoying some sexual harassment just prior. But, she doesn't sit around and do nothing but scream, she stabs the pirate. I always liked that. Edit: Also, how have I never realized that that's Zoe Saldana??? Oh wow.
I interpret the "And then they made me their chief" line as absolute truth, not time travel as you surmised. Jack was on the island before this movie, became chief, and left. On his return, he resumed his duties as chief... duties which included being ritually eaten. But it was the only place he could think to run to at the time.
Fun fact, it was actually a reference to a British TV series called The Fast Show. It was a sketch show where one of the characters would casually tell the end of a very remarkable story and finish off with a similarly casual "which was nice". Apparently Depp was a big fan of The Fast Show and even appeared on the final episode.
The problm with following PotC movies is that they made jack the main character, while he was not supposed to be one. He was supposed to be this awesome mysterious side character with a secret heart of gold.
The music is great, but it got a little tainted for me when I realized the main theme was lifted directly from Gladiator. Same composer, so I guess you can't call it plagiarism, but still... Great score and sound design none the less
@@notstonks20 I honestly can barely tell the difference. I'm sure someone with a better ear for music can tell, but for me, they're basically the same.
@@arthurfisher1857 I don't want to act like I know everything, but I do play instruments and I can read music, so I guess I am a little qualified for this. The cue in Gladiator is several seconds long only, and it doesn't even serve as the main melody. Although I wouldn't exactly call it harmony, this is where it does get subjective, as you can say it sounds very similar, but for me, the Pirates melody (He's a Pirate) has many phrases which are completely different and bare no resemblance. On top of this, just concentrating on the first movie to be fair, other themes like 'Skulls and Crossbones', 'The Black Pearl', 'The Medallion Calls', and 'The Underwater March' are totally original and help to support the main theme. The main melody itself has a lot of variations, in the form of the love theme ('One Last Shot'), the battle theme, ('Barbossa is Hungry'), and so on. It's really excusable at worst.
I remember my friends talking me into watching this movie in theaters probably the second weekend after it's initial release? I was all like, "Johnny Depp? Playing a pirate? In a movie based on a Disney ride? Ehhhh, Ohhh-kaaaay." I also remember saying to my friends after it was over, "Let's buy tickets to see it again, NOW!" They didn't, but I did!
I was watching the making of the Lord of the Rings and in an interview Orlando Bloom said the movie he was then working on was called "Pirates of the Caribbean: The curse of the Black Pearl" and I thought oh god why would you go from LOTR to... that? Little did I know what a great move it would be.
Another win, and one of my favourite details: 6:06 those “flute sounds” are very reminiscent of the forests the Aztecs, and the gold the Pearl’s crew stole, came from. It’s a beautifully eerie echo of how deep the history of the gold they seek is, and how far it’s come from its original source. And it haunts the crew as they search for it to break the curse. It’s *so good!*
yes, sailors still having the waves in their bones is a thing. My father was one and everytime he came land side he walked kinda drunk and he explained it to me.
@@mikee3823 ZesPak doesn't think your dad was telling the truth, so he's referring to a popular lie that parents tell kids, and implying your dad *also* lied about the sailor thing. It's a pretty passive aggressive move, don't listen to them.
It can take just a few hours on a boat. I used to sail with my dad in the summer, just Saturday afternoons around a course for a few hours. Often when I laid down to go to sleep on those Saturday evenings my brain would still be compensating and it would feel like my bed was rocking a bit. Not noticeable when walking around doing stuff, but lying still I could feel it. Being on the ocean for weeks at a time would definitely require an adjustment period upon returning to land.
Not that I’m defending the scenario, but I do kind of get the choice not to have a younger actor in the Norrington role for the flashback scene... I think Norrington’s hair in the flashback, vs the wig he has for the rest of the movie, was meant to telegraph to the audience that he too, was younger- Elizabeth was 10, & I think Norrington as a junior officer, was meant to be like 17-21 (back then, naval officers’ careers began when they were like 13, or so) - 8 years later, she’s now 18 & Norrington is only in his mid-late 20’s & the age-gap looks much less dramatic when she’s aged up into Kiera. It would have looked less- odd, I guess, to have had a younger actor for the scene- but maybe they thought the costume & junior rank was enough...
I always heard that was actually his father, as they are usually only called by their last names and Norrington could easily have followed up Norrington. Dunno what happened to his father then though
Not to be that person but it's E I not I E for Keira's name. The I before E rule is stupid if we are gonna make names that are E I. Also I agree with you. I think if this movie was made now we would have de-aged Norrington digitally a little bit.
“I’m curious… after ya killed me, what was it ye were planning on doing next?” With the bloodied knife establishing that they can bleed when they’re not in moonlight, which is needed for the curse to work… Mmmmm, so good. You weren’t wrong about missing some of my favorite moments.
Seriously. One of my other favorites is Willy Wonka in the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, who (what a coincidence) is also played by Johnny Depp.
Agreed, best one ever. It shows (not tells) us everything we need to know about him. He sees himself as a badass (Him on the mast at the start looking stoically on the horizon), he's unlucky as hell (His little boat is sinking), he's a pirate with a romanticized view of pirates (Him taking his hat off when seeing the pirate corpses), he's seen and done it all and is completely unphased (casually stepping off his sinking ship's mast and onto the pier like he does it every day), then taking a loss by offering 3 shillings only to then turn around and casually rob the guy of his docking fees coinpurse (Showing he's willing to take a loss now, if it means he can get a win later). If there was an award for "best character intro", this would win it, every year, until the end of time. Absolutely freakin' flawless.
I should probably agree with the joker from dark knight, but the joker is an 80 year old character. We have a lot of assumptions about him. That 2 minute intro of captain jack was the worlds introduction to him and is (in my opinion of course) the greatest of all time. =) I am old yet have no children so I cannot say I have watched cars from end to end so i will have to defer to your wisdom.
One cool thing I noticed is that Jack doesn't get caught until the fight with Will who is the son of the man who was largely responsible to jack being marooned. In fact through out the first three movies it's often the people close to jack who get one upon him and rarely if ever the EITC or other pirates.
I gotta say, what's even more awesome about this movie that no one talks about is the fact that Jack is a SUPER well written character. There's an entire two separate book series about his time as a younger pirate and his adventures. I have a whole new appreciation for Jack Sparrow as a character after reading those books especially in these movies.
I loved all of the first 3 PotC movies, especially the third one. That final ship battle is probably the coolest action scene I've seen in a long, long time.
13:54 Right after making the cut on her palm, Elizabeth asks, "Is that it?" and Barbossa replies with, "Waste not." That implies that he was planning some very not nice things for her.
Still love that Elizabeth immediately goes for the swords. She only hides because she can't get the sword out. It's another hint towards who she'll become 💜
"...They wouldn't kill Elizabeth..." I think they were just going to take advantage of her once the curse was lifted. After all Barbarosa did say nothing would quench their thirst while they had the curse.
Having been in the Navy I can confirm that it takes a while to get ones, "Sea Legs" the same way as going back to land requires one to regain their, "Land Legs". First time I got back from an ocean assignment, I got sick and stumbled around at first trying to walk on land. Was weird lol
Your point about being acclimated to the movement of the waves is pretty accurate. I used to be a sailor and the first few days back after a few weeks at sea you find yourself rocking on solid land because you're still subconsciously compensating for the sea state.
It's why Black Pearl and At World's End are my favorite films in the series. Massive amounts of Barbossa, especially in 3 with all the Jack and Barbossa banter going on with both of them competing for being captain.
I like how it looks like the 2 guards that stop him at the beginning are genuinely listening to and invested in Jack’s story when Elizabeth falls into the water, as if for a second they forgot he was a pirate, or he’s just that good at storytelling 😂
It took me years to realize that near the beginning, when the British guy says it's "Captained by a man so evil, hell itself spat him back out", he's not talking about Barbosa. That tale is about Jack. He was captain of the black pearl until he was sent to "hell" on that island, and escaped. Hence it "spat him back out", and the exaggeration was just the tale travelling through word of mouth.
Thank you for finally seeing that while Jack is the star and a unique interpretation of pirates but as far as the classical interpretation goes for pirates. Barbossa is the MAN. Even in the later movies
The best line in this film is when Jack is told that the dock is off limits to civilians, and his reply is "I'm terribly sorry i didnt know, if i see one i shall inform you immediately"

I was waiting for someone to point that out.

Yep
It is a crime he didn't win that line.
Agreed
I always took the "I became their Chief" story as an explanation of how quick Jack can learn a language and how his charisma gets men to follow him even though his mannerisms are so weird
If you follow the clues its heavily implied Sparrow was a Privateer at some point (and pretty much confirmed in a deleted scene) so it would make sense somewhat for him to be intelligent as many would be given some form of formal education and he would probably have learnt some languages along the way being a travelling man so hearing another cultures native tongue would be no problem as he probably could use other languages as basis.
"I'm curious. After killing me, what was it you were planning on doing next?"
Barbossa is a great critical thinker, too!
"So what now, Jack Sparrow, are we to be two immortals, locked in a epic battle until judgement day and trumpets blow? Humm?!?!?"
"...Or you could just surrender."
--Jack vs. Hector... always a win.
I think that's what makes his rivalry with Jack all the more interesting and believable, both men may not look it but have incredible intellect. Barbosa just has a bit more of a cold heart than Jack does, and Jack is a bit more eccentric. A prime example of 2 different visions for the same product.
"The compass doesn't even point North"
"Aye, but we aren't tryna go North are we?"
Heck, I walked across a swaying bridge once and continued swaying after I stepped off on the other side.
THis movie still holds up when compared to the others. Mainly because while Johnny Depp was allowed to be weird, it was still the restrained kind that made it clear that while Jack acts like an idiot, he's actually insanely clever and a competent pirate.
I think the second one holds up pretty well too.
The first three all have a clever Jack, imo

I can confirm that when you spent some time on a sailing vessel, walking on dry land is very weird in the beginning. You are used to countering all those movements and suddenly nothing moves anymore. Now I personally never walked funny because of it (although it sure feels like you are walking funny) but I've also never spent more than 1 month on a sailing vessel. It's not hard to imagine that if, like you say, you spent all your life on sailing ships you'd walk a little funny. Also he's basically always drunk, that probably doesn't help either.

@@isdrakon9802 that’s vertigo, you might want to see a doctor about that
Its actually an extreme form of sea sickness called land sickness where the roles get essentially reversed .
From all of the knowledge I have, I am almost certain that Jack Sparrow is dehydrated.
He completely brushed over that Jack was holding a banana when they met the crew for no apparent reason. I found that hilarious.
Because Jack is the monkey

I found it odd in my most recent watch, because I learned recently that apparently, there were superstitions back in those times that bananas on boats were bad luck, and Mr. Gibbs is a superstitious man, so I wonder why he never called jack out for it.
It is recommended to eat a couple of times a day - so good on Jack for having food! :D
My theory is that since Norrington what wants most is to eradicate piracy, the compass points towards Jack.
my theory is that he's actually into pirates and there's a whole mountain of m/m fanfic I'm about to climb, hold on a sec.
Bruh why cant it just be something behind jack
@Luigi Nastro My theroy is I care
It even gets crazier when you learn that norrington has a life dept to Jack's father long story short norrington's father who was too a navy officer came into blows with captain Teague and some point little james fell of the ship and nearly drowned but captain Teague saved him something along the lines of pirates honor james's father was not happy about (he was a hardass against pirates and did everything in his power to pass the very same mentality to his son)
Nah he just fell for jacks charm
Jack: This girl... how far are you willing to go to save her?
Will: I'd die for her
Jack: Oh good! No worries then
That exchange is gold. Shoulda been a win.
Keanu Reeves is perfect imo as Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk 2077 but I'd love to see Johnny Depp's take on Johnny Silverhand if it's in the same vein as Jack Sparrows personality and inspirations from rock
EDIT: Grammar
Church684 Depp is CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW for life. if i saw him playing another pirate it would just be Captain Jack for me
Will: Where is Elizabeth:
Jack: She's save, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word, really. Except Elizabeth, who is in fact a woman.
THAT is gold.
The WHOLE movie Series is a win
Some would say cursed Aztec gold
About Jack's weird walking on land: It's called "sea legs" just to throw out a term. It's what sailors call the learned ability to walk normally on a boat and shift your balance to combat the sway. It's not that hard once you get the hang of it, but does throw your walking off to suddenly transition from sea to land, as is seen with Jack.
“Everything great about Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”

It really is one of the best-written blockbusters of all time. I'd easily put it up with the likes of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, or Die Hard.

I had noticed the Norrington compass before, and it made me realize that he is what I call “a standard movie sideofficer” meaning he WANTS the girl, but it’s his job (in this case, hanging pirates) that always pushes the girl to the back seat
Norrington is much much more than "standard sideofficer". He is the character with the richest arc.
That or he actually wants that pirate booty more than he wants Elizabeth

Being a “standard sideofficer” doesn’t mean you can’t have a good arc. In fact, if you see enough of them to realize they are a “standard sideofficer” they generally get a pretty damn good arc.

I had never realised that Barbossa watching Elizabeth eat was less him being an evil womanising creep and more so just the fact that he hasn’t tasted or felt since before he was cursed
Being deprived of basic human functions for so long and possibly not being able to be released from it would make anyone mad

It really was. Sure if you really look you can notice the fakeness and limitations, but you really have to look, and for 2003 that's phenomenal.
One of the details I remember is that though the rest of the pirates were CG'd up, they purposefully kept the actor's actual eyes whenever they could to keep them looking more "real".
I find this is true for 2 and 3 as well, CGI shows its age a little, but still convincing
@@notstonks20 Actually I'd say they aren't really showing any age. Davy Jones is still the best looking CGI character to this day.

I interpret the "And then they made me their chief" line as absolute truth, not time travel as you surmised. Jack was on the island before this movie, became chief, and left. On his return, he resumed his duties as chief... duties which included being ritually eaten. But it was the only place he could think to run to at the time.
I thought it referred to him being made Captain, as in the crew elected him to be Captain.
This makes a lot of sense.
“Part 1”, yes there’s more. The music alone should get a 1000 wins.
The music is great, but it got a little tainted for me when I realized the main theme was lifted directly from Gladiator.

Great score and sound design none the less
@@arthurfisher1857 I wouldn't say it's lifted completely, but I agree it's very similar.
@@notstonks20 I honestly can barely tell the difference. I'm sure someone with a better ear for music can tell, but for me, they're basically the same.
Arthur Fisher it’s not lifted at all lmao I’ve done deep dives on both scores. The similarity is barely there
@@arthurfisher1857 I don't want to act like I know everything, but I do play instruments and I can read music, so I guess I am a little qualified for this.

Not sure if it's ever explained how jack got his compass, but the usefulness of a cursed object like that is SERIOUSLY underrated in this series
Captain Jack Sparrow: Greatest. Character. Introduction. Of. All. Time.
Ehhhh one of, lightning mcqueen in cars is SO GOOD and joker from dark knight
I should probably agree with the joker from dark knight, but the joker is an 80 year old character. We have a lot of assumptions about him. That 2 minute intro of captain jack was the worlds introduction to him and is (in my opinion of course) the greatest of all time. =) I am old yet have no children so I cannot say I have watched cars from end to end so i will have to defer to your wisdom.
CinemaWins mentions Jack Sparrow.
Me: There should be a Captain in there somewhere...
ALSO I JUST WANT TO MENTION The music/fight scenes are often timed *perfectly*, it's very satisfying.
One cool thing I noticed is that Jack doesn't get caught until the fight with Will who is the son of the man who was largely responsible to jack being marooned. In fact through out the first three movies it's often the people close to jack who get one upon him and rarely if ever the EITC or other pirates.
His father was the only person who DIDN'T want to leave Jack on the island
I mean I like the Pirates Trilogy as a whole, but this film is so damn strong in every regard.
I Like you for acknowledging only 3 movies
Yeah. I love the Shrek trilogy equally but the 2nd was amazing
@@crockoreptile That side story they did between 2 and Forever After was terrible though.
Is it possible a movie can be so flawlessly perfect?
*POTC: Yes.*
Only first part
This movie is a masterpiece. One of my top 10 of all time.
Johnny Depp. ALWAYS A WIN. ALWAYS.
I loved all of the first 3 PotC movies, especially the third one. That final ship battle is probably the coolest action scene I've seen in a long, long time.
or the end of Beckett.
xGhale I have a wall sized Jack Sparrow from that movie. It’s blooming big.
Finally, someone who likes the third movie best! To this day I do not understand why there is so much hate for that movie.
@@thejohnhopkinscompany9599 for most people I know it's Kiera Knightley's shrill pirate speech that makes everyone cringe to death.
@@Kozu604 Odd, I always really liked that speech.
13:54 Right after making the cut on her palm, Elizabeth asks, "Is that it?" and Barbossa replies with, "Waste not." That implies that he was planning some very not nice things for her.
I always took it to mean that he wouldn't kill her if he didn't have to. He's not a psychopath.
He wanted marry (or at least sleep with) her. It’s canonically confirmed.
@@louisrovegno542 they're all pirates, all undead, and have been... **ahem,** unable to "enjoy the company of a woman" for a very long time.
Jakk Frost Barbossa didn’t intend to harm her. He wanted to seduce her with the gold, power, food, and luxurious stuff. He wanted a trophy bride.
@@andreamajoros7669 I'm pretty sure you're inserting your own head canon into his motives.
Everyone gave me the nasty eyes whenever I said my favorite character was Barbossa and not Jack. Geoffrey Rush is always a win!
It's why Black Pearl and At World's End are my favorite films in the series. Massive amounts of Barbossa, especially in 3 with all the Jack and Barbossa banter going on with both of them competing for being captain.

@@MrNicoJac That and the scope comparison scenes are some of my favorite parts of the movie.
-_-
This has got to be the weirdest pirate movie franchise you’ve ever heard of.
But you have heard of it~
This doesn't make sense
It was all Starlord's fault DONT CARE
E
There, now maybe it makes sense. Then again this is a movie with Captain Jack Sparrow so why should it make sense
I like how it looks like the 2 guards that stop him at the beginning are genuinely listening to and invested in Jack’s story when Elizabeth falls into the water, as if for a second they forgot he was a pirate, or he’s just that good at storytelling 😂
The fact that this series made Johnny Depp a name every kid would know, is amazing
He held that honor once before, too. When he was on the original 21 Jumpstreet TV show.
I clicked thinking "Huh how did I miss this one" to then going "Why isn't part 2 in the suggestions" to then going "Oh it's brand new"
It took me years to realize that near the beginning, when the British guy says it's "Captained by a man so evil, hell itself spat him back out", he's not talking about Barbosa.
