What an amazing performance that was from Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and Troy Baker (Joel) on this years Playstation Experience! I really love how their voices harmonize together. Goosebumps every-fu**ing-where!!!
I just had to upload it as well, even though it already had been a couple of times. This performance just deserves to be spreaded as much as possible. And after all, I'm a huge fan and I'm just so freaking excited about this game that I can't await the day on which I'll get my hands on it (probably on 2019, I guess).
I think I'm not the only one to say Ellie and Joel will go down as two of the most amazing characters in gaming history

This is next level of difficult. People need to understand that singing is hard, voice acting is hard. And she is singing as ANOTHER character. That's just effin bonkers.
She had to go through vocal singing so she could sound more like a teenager.
Yeah, she couldn't sing badly so they had to get a coach in to teach her 😂 and this was even more difficult because Ashley has social anxiety and struggles in front of large audiences.

It's so fascinating to hear her sing as Ellie, and not Ashley. If you guys haven't heard her cover of House of the Rising Sun, it's an excellent example - Ashley's voice is more jazz/bluesy, and clear and crisp. Ellie's singing voice is much rougher and dirtier, and much more prone to channeling emotion. It's a fantastic rendering by Johnson - one thing is to portray a character like she does, another thing completely is to extend that to their song.
Shes amazing, she had to have voice training to make her voice sound grittier for the trailer.
@@profoundprocrastinator I think her voice had to sound that way to compliment the dark and grittier tone of the game. If they had have kept her voice the way it is normally, it wouldn't have worked

It sounds pretty much the same to me nowadays, but I remember I did like her 2nd version singing as Ellie In “through the valley” best, because she sounded more human Instead of a script lol

Not her normal voice. Ashley Johnson is a professional singer, which Ellie couldn't possible be. So the voice actress was trained to sing worse, though still great, than she really does to better fit Ellie's character.

Troy Baker is on another fucking level of talent. I know everybody knows that already, but god fucking damn. Just to be able to sing so perfectly in this type of voice when it isn't even your natural singing voice like come on man share some talent around the place :O Not even mentioned the guitar playing with such dynamics and perfection to the mood of the song.
To true. Consider also that Ashley was just some random child actor that managed to land a role on a massive sitcom at age six. By all rights she shouldn't also be a fantastic singer, a great adult actor, a great voice actor, a solid D&D player, and a very well adjusted, happy, sweet and caring normal adult that anyone would love to have as a friend even without all the fame and talent. She needs to share some of that talent around too!

I love how you can hear Ashley choking on emotion in her delivery, or maybe making a conscious effort to do so. It adds so much depth and scenery to the performance.
Fun Fact, When Ashley was singing for The Last of Us 2 they hired a coach to teach her how to sing worse for the character because she was too good.

I watched this video over 2 years ago wondering - why is there so much of pain in Ashley's voice, I know she's an amazing actor - and I realized that that's not Ashley, that's Ellie singing.
I'm sure it was about the time her and Troy would have known what was going to happen in Part 2.
And then I finished Part 2, and now I'm here and this song, the lyrics - it all makes sense.
My heart freaking dropped when troy started singing I closed my eyes and I could picture ellie and joel sitting and singing while he plays the guitar
I know Ellie is a digital character, but I found it quite weird to see completely different person (Ashley Johnson) who's voice sounds 100% like Ellie's.

Finally got to hear Joel sing.
Makes me want to cry. The level of emotion between Ellie and Joel. I cant wait to see how their relationship and bond has grown deeper in the next game. The creators said the first game was about love, and the next game is about hate, i cant wait for the feels that will ensue.

I hate how this game makes me feel man. It's just so...heavy. I finished the game. I just want to put everything associated with this game on a shelf and forget about it. Just put it away. But stuff like this keeps bringing me back. Ashley and Troy and ND created two of the most iconic characters in any medium: tv, movie, video game, whatever. They're so talented.

They're both absolutely amazing. Hearing Mr. Baker singing as Joel, live, it's crazy and makes my heart sink as I'm replaying the last of us part 2 right now....
even with all the layers of being professional VO actors, and performing as the character rather than yourself, that must've been terrifying for the two of them.

Character development is the most important part of any good story. The Last of us is a one of a kind creation.

I mostly know Ashley from Critical Role...and hearing her as Ellie is so strange to me...it's almost like a broken rougher version of Pike and like I knew the CR gang are all talented voice actors and some are great singers too....but wow, this is next level

Before covid delayed this game and put everything in the world on hold. My friend and I (both huge fansof the first game) had a great plan. We'd play the game as much as possible from launch on Thursday night then head to London Comicon where Ashley Johnson was scheduled to appear. As gutted as we were it didn't go as planned - I'm not sure I wouldn't have just burst into tears upon meeting her. An amazing game, amazing song, amazing character from an incredible artist.
