- I just uploaded a video of Through the Valley live from the Old Church with the story behind the song to my UA-cam channel.
There’s 8 minutes of talking before I start playing…
I realize that I don’t always share the story of the song but in this place and on that night, I felt comfortable to go all in.
On my last post with the photo of a picture my wife got made for me, I mentioned that my family owned restaurants in the Chicago area where I grew up.
A couple folks commented regarding “oh that’s how you made it, your family owned restaurants” or “yeah makes sense since it takes money to make money, I see how you got your start”.
At first I was a bit offended but then I realized I haven’t shared a lot on how I grew up and how would they know…even if they’re presuming some things that aren’t true.
My family owned one restaurant at a time.
They worked their asses off, spent most of their time there and us kids also grew up with a vast amount of time in that environment.
These weren’t the nicest places but also not the worst.
It was a simple family owned local fast food place. The spot in Chicago was in a rougher neighborhood but we made it work.
While there, we were around prostitution, homelessness, gang violence, gun violence and a lot more.
I was also singing in gospel churches as well as being apart of a choir and practicing opera at the same time.
These different elements of singing were the foundations of how I became the vocalist I am today.
It was also an escape from reality and an emotional release for me throughout hard times growing up.
I never possessed loads of money to get me to where I am nor did I have financial help or any industry connections.
That’s not to say other folks haven’t helped me out in other ways along the way and been with me through various stages of this journey.
You truly can’t do it alone in the end.
I started releasing my own music and busking on the streets of Fayetteville, Arkansas when I was 25 years old about 10 years ago.
That led to more and more opportunities, playing with musicians, forming a band, touring, etc, and it all snowballed from there.
I don’t share this seeking validation or praise.
I share this because I want those kids and whoever else out there that don’t feel like they could ever achieve their dreams to know that’s it’s completely possible to get what you want in your life.
Of course it’s not gonna be easy, but that’s just life in general.
Sacrifices will have to be made in a lot of ways and you’ll have to learn to deal and hopefully enjoy the struggle of it all but you can do it.
As always, I deeply appreciate and am so grateful for all of your support out there.
I’m looking forward to sharing more stories with you all as time goes on.
I really hope this song gets to be played again in the The Last of us Live action series! Cause it deserves to be there

I discovered you years ago on Pandora and became an instant fan. My son discover you in TLOU and became an instant fan. Neither of us knowing how big a fan the other was. We have now attended 3 of your concerts together and we were there the night of this concert. I wouldn’t trade the time and memories we have created through your music for anything! You are an amazing artist and an even more amazing person.

Had the same kinda of “religious” pressure growing up, and still messes up with me to this day. My kids will never go thru this. God is LOVE.
Depending on which "god" you worship this week,... you may want to fact check. For instance the god of Christianity is certainly loving,... but is also holy and righteous. As such, if you are guilty of sin (we all are) and breaking God's moral law,... your son will separate you from Him unless you believe and repent.
The point is,... you are certainly free to "make up" your own warm, fuzzy, cuddly, mish mashed version of a god,... and exclaim to the world that "God is LOVE",.... but never forget that even a LOVING parent,... will not only discipline their children,... but actually SEPARATE themselves from the child,... and their siblings, when their REBELLION is prolific.
Not sure what you believe but the Christian "God" is also a God of Judgement,... and He explains in detail, His intolerance of lying, stealing, lusting, etc.
You might want to seek a different "god" if all you want is the warm cuddly, loving one,... because that is NOT how He describes Himself.

Shawn creció en el noroeste de Chicago, Illinois. Sus padres tenían un restaurant ubicado en un barrio no muy seguro y hubo un día el cuál tuvieron un altercado con unos pandilleros de la zona, gracias a esto Shawn y su familia se tuvieron que mudar más al sur de Chicago. Ya establecidos, su familia decidió entrar en la religión pentecostal, la cual nunca le agradó a Shawn e hizo que a los 18 años se vaya de ahí por su cuenta.
Un día Shawn recibió una llamada de su hermana menor la cual estaba pasando por momentos difíciles a causa de esta misma religión, y fue la situación de su hermana lo que motivó a Shawn a escribir Through The Valley, la cual dedicó como un gran "Fuck you" a todas las personas que sientan ser superiores a los demás, creyendo estar en un pedestal con el derecho de mirar y criticar a otros desde arriba.

You know as musicians we can hear any song & if we want to feel it’ll bring us to tears. Because we can get there..” but for the common persons they really need an image to elaborate on the sounds their hearing and well if the lyrics help elongate those images well then people who couldn’t get there before can now feel a sentiment that would’ve been lost on them. And as I’m old enough to remember MTV when it played music videos. I remember how powerful those said video were. So much so, that it is the very reason I play guitar. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Nothing Else matters by Metallica, Pearl Jam’s Jeremy then the unplugged series, Nirvana’s Smells like teen spirit along with Alice n chains Man in the box & then unplugged series but I also recall Peter Gabriel or George Harrison’s I’ve got my mind set on you. Having no idea he was part of the Beatles All of said artists had great music videos that sold the songs of their counterpart great stuff Cheers from utah
