  • Today I rank Led Zeppelin’s discography from worst to best; Considering they released eight albums in the span of 10 years with hardly a dud make this list incredibly difficult to rank. Thanks to my Patreon members for voting on this question. / vinylrewind

They're both so amazing in such different ways.

Definitely. Have to agree with Pitchfork’s review on this one: “It's also, to my ears, their best album, even if it's not as unified or complete as some of what had come before. Why their best? First of all, there's more of it. The previous two albums were awesome, but each had just eight songs; Physical Graffiti has 15. It's math-when you are talking about songs from this period of the band, that makes it roughly twice as good.”

Feel the same way about IV, really refreshing to see LZIII get the props it deserves -- I think they really branched out on this one, and it kinda went over their audience's heads, and as a result they made a super straightforward but also less adventurous IV. Addendum: having now watching this entire video, I gotta add that maybe you could've discussed the eastern strings on Friends, the pastoral vibe of Side B, how exposure to Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters influenced this direction etc. That aside, great channel!

Gotta disagree with you, Carouselambra is epic tune, love it, especially that disco breakdown at the end, we got totally different taste; HOH is their best, the crunge is an homage to James Brown; and I know this will draw some ire, but In My Time of Dying, to me, overblown and falls flat, No Quarter is my favorite all time Zeppelin tune, it’s all there; power, mystery, and the hammer of the gods...

I enjoyed this ranking and you made some very good points here. It is difficult to rank some bands and particularly LZ. That said I'll include my ranking/thoughts-
#1 I think that Physical Graffiti is the bands zenith and the ultimate Zeppelin album.
#2 Houses of the Holy is a close second and this album and tour was the bands high point artistically and musically the best tour that they ever did *or anyone else you'd care to mention. Many of the songs from Physical Graffiti were recorded at the same sessions as well. The album 'remains' as alluring and potent still and I love the diverse array of sounds and textures on this album plus the album cover is fantastic and gives the album even more of an atmosphere/vibe.
#3 is 3 and yes a fantastic album that uses both electric and acoustic sounds to create the best of both worlds. Out on the tiles is a favorite.
    #4 is LZ 2
    #5 is LZ 1
#6 is Led Zeppelin 4 or Zoso which is an excellent album but for me also its 'played'
#7 In Through the Out Door has its weaknesses but also some brilliant songs like I'm Gonna Crawl and In the Evening which stand up to their best stuff. Fool in the Rain I don't like at all and it sinks the album for me. All of Ny Love is beautiful and something unexpected from them.
    # Presence is an album I never really connected with or sounded good despite Achilles Last Stand (Heal) which is good but the recording sounds tinny and flat plus the songs just don't jump out at me much ..
