50 years ago, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut. Their sophomore effort followed just a handful of months later -- taking them from nearly unknown session players to a hard rock powerhouse. But when the band shifted from their blues influence towards folk for Led Zeppelin III, a luke-warm response from fans and critics threatened their rise.
Their success was being attributed to hype and aggressive marketing campaigns. In protest, Zeppelin would move away from the standard -- if not necessary way of selling records. Their fourth album would be left untitled and the band’s name, absent from the cover. Instead, mysterious sigils appeared -- one for each member of the group. They would strip everything away in order to let the music speak for itself.
They would have to push their creative limits in order to progress -- experimenting with new production techniques and instruments. Guitarist Jimmy Page swore their fourth album would be their best. If it wasn’t, they’d give up and retire. What followed was one of the most iconic rock albums ever made. Setting Led Zeppelin on a path towards becoming legends of rock and roll.

Led Zeppelin FAQ
Where was Led Zeppelin 4 recorded? Where was Led Zeppelin IV recorded?
Led Zeppelin's fourth album was recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire, England.
When did Led Zeppelin 4 come out? What year did Led Zeppelin IV released?
November 8, 1971
What do the Led Zeppelin 4 symbols mean?
The feather of Ma’at, Egyptian goddess of justice and fairness encompassed within a circle. The emblem of a writer, belonged to none other than Robert Plant. The Borromean rings, depicting man, woman and child resided with John Bonham. A celtic knot portrayed a person both confident and competent was chosen by John Paul Jones. Finally, Zoso. Designed by Page himself, it wasn’t intended to be a word at all. It’s meaning remains a complete mystery.
Why was Led Zeppelin IV called zoso?
The band's name and title were left off the album. The only things left were the symbols the group created. Page's Zoso was the only one that appeared to form a word and it just stuck.
How many copies of Led Zeppelin 4 have been sold?
Led Zeppelin IV has sold over 23 millions copies in North America. With 37 million copies sold worldwide.
Is Led Zeppelin IV the best album ever?
That's for you to decide. It's arguably the group's best record.

The fact that Led Zeppelin 3 didn't have good reception is a damn shame
Yeah, I like 3 a lot. Probably more than I like 1 and 2--though 2 is a more powerful album. Yeah, they went a little deep in the folk tunes--but you can't really knock an album that birthed Immigrant Song and Since I've Been Loving You. And I like that they showed they didn't have to rely on volume and overdrive...
3's the best of the numbered albums imo (though Houses of the Holy is my favorite overall)
@@Ethan_Brant Why not Physical Graffiti? To me its just an easy #1. Its not often that double albums wouldnt benefit with a little trimming down (Beatles White album for example). PG doesnt have a weak link and it has such a sprawling array of styles and of course more songs than any other album. Its their high water mark creatively in my opinion too. If I could only ever listen to one ever again it would be PG. Hard to pick number #2 though. Either III, IV or HoTH.
Ethan Brant agreed, houses of the holy is my favourite album. The rain song and no quarter are unmatched
Joseph Cook facts
The shift from acoustic to electric in stairway is still one of the greatest things of all time
Brendan McCabe indeed. It was also badass that the song continued to build in volume and force..Representing the higher, more rarified air in the sky...?
And the bit where Bonzo comes in is hype as fuck. Christ I love Stairway
@@tonysimmons5729 very poetic, but it's supposed to be representive of an orgasm.
Paulito8000 I was referencing Stairway. Sorry for the confusion.

Levee Breaks is such a massive banger
Paul Jesus it’s a sausage?!?!
That intro is so timeless, you could play it anywhere and everyone would instantly know who that is,
Such a simple beat but so powerful
KATRINA
I always play 2 songs back-to-back whenever I listen to Z➰S➰: the alpha "Black Dog" [Hey hey, Mama, when you walk that way / I watch honey drip, can't keep away] & the omega "Levee" [Cryin' can't help ya / Prayin' won't do ya no good]❗
The drum on this song just like, Hammer of The Gods
One Zeppelin hidden gem is "Down by the Seaside"
Great song!
RebSike it’s not on 4 tho. But yes great sont
It’s just a gem bro. Ain’t no Led Zeppelin song hidden nowadays
Bro it’s awesome
It gives me great vibes
They could've quit after IV and still been one of the greatest bands ever
Would've been insane if they'd quit when they were peaking
That's true. They released only 9 studio albums and 4 live albums and they are one of the (if not THE) bests groups ever.
@@Francks_ kinda went downhill after PG don't ya think. Presence was pretty good though.
Thank gawd they didn't
Yes but I'd preferred they had done that after houses of the holy...
No mention of “Going to California” or “Misty Mountain Hop”? For shame!
Misty Mountain Hop is my favorite on the album. Love the heavy sound.
Yeah man!! Going to california is one os the greatest lz songs in my opinion! And misty moutain hop is a funny weel done masterpiece too!
The drums on Misty Mounatin Hop are so badass, especially towards the end.
I was just thinking the same thing!!!
For shame is right
Fans are brain dead. Zep III is full of masterful music and one of my favorites
III's biggest crime was it didn't sound like I and II.
Great mix of rockers and beautiful folk/acoustic
"Gallows Pole" is SO damn sublime, yet overlooked or underappreciated!
Frankincensed agreed! Probably my favorite....
III is better than II in my opinion. II is drawn out and gives me a head-ache.
I believe Achilles Last Stand is the best Zeppelin tune in a very underrated album.
AGREED!!!!!!
Agree, their lives on this song were breathtaking
I also love Dazed and Confused
That entire album is just underappreciated, Candy Store Rock is the shit, Nobody's Fault but Mine is a banger.
Presence, if I had to pick a favorite album. But I can't decide on just one song.
Achilles sure is the secret banger of LedZep.. Fans are soooo damn lucky :p
As an artist I find these „how they did it“ storys just really inspiring, espeially when the musicians where as creative as Led Zeppelin

The 1st time I heard Led Zeppelin was in 1969. We had a convenience store in the neighborhood and I believe I was only around 12 years old. They had a wire basket there that was full of 45 rpm records with holes melted through them. I'll never forget it living loving maid was on one side and whole lotta love on the other. They hit my generation of kids like a steamroller. I was already experimenting with the guitar. And what an influence they were. I still play guitar today and I'm 62. Thanks to all the members of Led Zeppelin for doing what they did. I also listen to them to this day. And will till the day I die.
I’ve been listening for 40 years myself and here I am, soaking in more. Always come back.
You mean you don't remember how old you were in 1969? 😁. I was only 4 and even I remember...
I was 16, hit me like a train… still hearing more within these wonderful tracks… still listening…❤️🇷🇴👍🏻🇬🇧
Editing on point as always. Led Zeppelin IV is no doubt in the top 10 greatest albums of all time.
No way. Maybe top 100.
@@HotStrange This is not my favorite Zeppelin Album, yet can't see how this one would barely crack the top 100. I mean, maybe we'll feel more hip to cram every Beatles album in the top 15 along with everything the Stones and Dylan wrote after that, but Zeppelin 4 is a solid damn album. I look at these 'top album' lists, and shake my head as to how they can put 68 albums before Zeppelin 4. I mean, hell, I'd be tempted to put In Through the Out Door in the top 68 let alone 4... :)

My favourite Led Zeppelin song is Hey Hey What Can I do
Never made it on an official album but it's a hell of a tune
The fact that it was a B-side makes it all the better and more mysterious
Miso That’s my favorite as well. Nice to hear that you have such good taste. In actuality, it hard to name a favorite Zep album.
Seriously, it's crazy for a gem like that not to make it on an album. Only a band like Led Zeppelin can do that.
Carter Wells isn’t it stairway to heavens b side?
hippiecheezburger I thought it was Immigrant Song’s B side.

How many bands wish they had fans debating over which of their album's are the best? True Mark's of a great band.
Literally every artist with a decently sized fanbase and more than one album will have its fanbase debate at least once over which is the artist's best record. No matter the quality of the music in question
Literally every band ever lmao
John Paul Jones played just about all of the mandolin for all of Led Zeppelin songs, just saying
Thank you sir
I think the only song he didn't play the mandolin on, is Battle of Evermore :-)
A fantastic musician no doubt, He introduced the mandolin during the recording of the 3rd album. Page used it to write battle of evermore...

This was really the album that introduced me to Led Zeppelin. Going to California is my favorite ever song from them.
The longest version of Going to California is on the 1971 live Japan tour.
4:06 yes and quite a little tape echo added to the roomy sound, and 7:24 the double neck was not used in the studio but for the tours following the album's release. The solo was played on a Fender Telecaster. On the 2014 Deluxe Edition, this first mix (mentioned at 8:35) can be heard.

Yooo. I've been waiting for the next video to drop, and it's about one of my favorite albums I listened to back in high school.
I remember when LZ4 was first released. I was a senior in high school and already a huge Zep fan. Stairway and Misty Mountain blew me away, but it did not take long before the entire album got played over and over and over and over on 8-track tape. A decent job reporting on Led Zeppelin IV, Middle 8. Very enjoyable.
However, it's common knowledge that the Gibson Twin Neck was purchased after the album's production, to perform Stairway to Heaven, live, with just the one guitar. It has been reported by Page, himself, the 12 String electric guitar parts were performed on a Fender XII.

There are a few mistakes in this video
Image of Fleetwood Mac at 1:47 displays the wrong band, in 1970 the band didn't have Stevie and Lindsey and perhap the original guitar trio still consisted of Green, Kirwan and Spancer (none of them on the photo).
