Abbey Road was their finest work in my opinion. It starts off with a GREAT Lennon song, then George's GREATEST song, and ends with Paul's GREAT medley. This album was a master class, and The Beatles were all professors.
Actually it has a few good songs and a lot of left-overs stitched together for the medley. They were running on fumes and wanted to record one last slick album (instead of just the shoddy Let It Be) before they bowed out.
@@steveconn Yes, your comments may be true, but look how well they stitched them together to make the whole album work. Great effort by George Martin to oversee just how they might make this final project work. Paul's elegaic piano laments on Side 2 might not be to everyone's taste but the album has sublime bass-playing throughout, 2 of the greatest songs of all time in George's pair and some stellar vocals - both the tight 3 part harmonies on Because, HCTS and The End as well as the strong leads - arguably everything on Side One. I won't even mention the great drums on Something, HCTS, and The End nor the lead guitar throughout as you already know how good it is. IF that had been patched together disinterestedly like Let It Be, then it too could have been a spectacular fail and left to rot on the tape reel shelves. Good forbid! Sir George Martin hank thank you - I agree with many others you were the link that brought together the boys to commit to a final moment of communal brilliance and the production is superb and captures all the Beatles could still do when they brought their A game.
Production on this record is much better than their earlier albums, I believe it was helped by new equipment installed in abbey road studios. It sounds like a modern recording compared with their earlier work, and still holds up today
Not only that John and George doubled down! As well as Come Together (which ran into a copyright problem) and Something (one of the GOATs),by John's I Want You (She's So Heavy) is a Lennon classic and in its overall sound, feel and spacey, improvised sounding bluesey soloing and so is George's HCTS, vying hard to be one of my all-time faves - by anyone. Paul, who played superb bass on all four songs, offers not only (most of) the medley complete with his own lead gtr contributions, but She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. Like John, he was offering a more soulful writing and vocal delivery here - something begun on the White Album. The styles and sounds - solid-body electrics, more distortion - were also changing. Also I'll give a shout out to Octopuses Garden - fairly original idea, with some smooth and slippery and genuinely melodic guitar lines from George anchored by Paul's by-now familiar oompah-style bassline. It's a nice simple pop song before the heavier close out to the big production of Side 2. Its saving grace is its not bloated, Opinions differ on whether Maxwell is - some just really do not care for the song. For me, it is the beginning of the song style of Wings. As some posters have said above, the production on the entire album is something that lifts it well above the shortcomings of any of the actual songs. It definitely presages the 70s.
"I want you" is one of my favorite songs. The way it just cuts off at the end is just brilliant. The brutal silence after the dozen or so guitar runs just shattered me the first time I listened to it.
You skipped one of the best songs which has also been covered many times "she came in through the bathroom window" and the final guitar solos played by all three...followed by "the love you take is equal to the love you make"...that's what made the medley work!
i'm pretty sure that I have listened to this album in it's entirety more than any other person on earth and every time I listen there's always something that I've never heard before, it is as endless as time itself..
You and me both, Pat. Hearing even a snippet of any one of the tracks always gives a strong urge to listen to the entire album from start to finish. It's an incomparable piece of work, even by the Beatles' own standards.
GerryMATW Hard to pick a favourite track, but I really like "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "Here Comes The Sun", and "Something". You could ( arguably ) say that overall Paul and George had the "best" material on the record. John's most valuable contribution in my opinion, was "Come Together".
My favorite part of the album is the end of ... yeah, "The End". The part from the staccato piano chords. It is so incredibly beautiful and such a great lyric!
It's great to hear your Beatles experience(at least 12, years ago for you) started very similarly to where I am right now. My parents LOVED all the famous hits and I also grew up feeling like I heard all there is to hear, all Beatles songs sound the same, and I had more interest in other music. Discovering other excellent musicians on and music lovers on youtube such as yourself(I have been a big fan of your Pink Floyd videos for years now), and seeing how many of them praise The Beatles so highly got me more curious. Also a few older songs like Pink Floyd's Summer 68 and Blue Oyster Cult's Before The Kiss sounded Beatles-y and I love those songs. My interest peaked when Andrew Huang and Rob Scallon made an album in a day at Abbey Road, lots of Beatles influence in those songs, and it's always great when people share the Making of their music in the studio. I have now heard The White Album, Sgt Pepper, Let it Be, and Abbey Road from beginning to end. I definitely understand more why they were SO HUGE in terms of fame and just being known as excellent musicians.
I used to listen to this album every night to help me sleep when I was a kid, I always had to skip the first 3 songs because Maxwell's Silver Hammer scared the heck out of me lol
It was my friend, the iconic creative guru and artist Douglas Maxwell who worked at Apple in Savile Row in 1968 until 1970, then carried on with Wings in the seventies that inspired Paul to write "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"...:)
Absolutely love this album and you're right, I Want You (She's So Heavy) is a really kick ass song, it's probably my favorite on Abbey Road. The only thing though, why didn't you talk about "Carry That Weight" and "The End?" In my opinion, they're two VERY important songs that make this such a classic, especially the exchanging of guitar solos between George, Paul and John on "The End." Regardless though, really enjoyed the review and hope you do more. (Subscribed)

I agree. The End is the perfect capstone to their entire recording career really. It has Ringo's awesome drum solo, and all three of the others each playing a distinctive yet perfectly fitting guitar solo. Play Love Me Do and then The End and you will truly see just how far they had developed musically in just 6 years.

Ringo really gave us his all on this album. This is the album that inspired me to start teaching myself how to play the drums so this album has a massive place in my heart. Love it so much.
This album is one where the CD layout is superior. There's just something about hearing the darkness and foreboding of the end of I Want You (She's So Heavy) followed immediately by the uplifting Here Comes The Sun. An effect you don't get with the record since you gotta get up and turn the thing over between these tracks.
@@davidbanan. With vinyl you have to get up and flip the record over. I enjoy both CD and vinyl. CD is a nice transition and vinyl gives you a moment's breather.
Long Comment Warning. I noticed that on this album, four things were done that took advantage of the raw nature of vinyls. 1) Because vinyls don't clearly show you how long a song is (like how a digital CD player would, or an ipod or whatever), you don't know when I Want You will end. The song sounds like it's going to go on and on. Then suddenly it stops. 2) Its stop is so jarring, and even more so by making you acknowledge its ending by being the last song on side 1, and you have to pick up the vinyl and flip it after what felt like the middle of a song. (Whereas a CD would keep playing on to the next song). 3) The medley. The songs (if we can even call them individual songs) are listed on the back. But as the vinyl plays, we cannot tell when one song ends and the other starts -- for the most part. We can pick out lyrics that match song titles. But it gets all mixed up with the You Never Give Me Your Money reprise. (But with a CD or something, you can skip, thus revealing a difference between each song.) And 4) There's a secret track. A CD would blatantly tell you there are 17 tracks, and as The End is finishing up, you'd think to yourself "Oh, this is just track 16." Now, of course CDs weren't even a thing when Abbey Road was made, so they there wasn't a music medium that they were working against. But they still pulled off these tricks. My conclusion: Abbey Road is better as a vinyl.
chezzer58 Abbey Road sounds better then. Lots of 60s-70s rock music sounds awesome when your high. Remember that a lot of bands used drugs then and made lyrics and songs when high.
I’m not disputing what drugs may or may not do to enhance the listening or playing of a song. I just think it’s a shame that we need to go down that road of drug inducement in order to fulfil our lives. Just have a nice cup of Tea and a biscuit.

Great review, very knowledgable. but its a pity you couldn't mention the great album closer, "The End" to instead focus so much on "Her majesty", which wasn't really a full song. Also missed out "Mean Mr Mustard" and "She came in through the bathroom window". But I do really like your style.
How could you leave out the gem of all gems “ And in the end , the love you take is equal to the love you make Ahhhhh “ with the orchestra crescendo. Most moving piece of music ever recorded .

You Never.... is a brilliant song with the same kind of mixture as Happiness is a Warm Gun and Paranoid Android. Strangely overlooked, perhaps because it's part of the medley.
@@MrAdriaxe ye, even Paul doesn't care that much about it. He did it live once and he half-assed it super hard, haha. Too bad because it is a masterpiece, but for him it's just probably another good song that he simply wrote.

I’m 38 and I’ve always thought The Beatles were overrated, about 3 months ago I decided to give their discography a shot. Wow was I wrong! So far I’ve listened to Abby Road, Revolver and Sargent peppers. Revolver is my favorite so far but Abby Road is Right up there.
Yes - the words may have been borrowed but the melodies from McCartney in the medley are really very, very memorable. I guess that's why so many are showing the love for You Never Give Me Your Money. It's such a great tune, beautifully phrased and beautifully arranged - or should that be orchestrated.
Good review...I always loved I Want you, She's so Heavy. The powerfully repetitive guitar riff just burns itself into your head as you near the end. John's ever present angst once again on display.
This Lp is just the absolute genius of The Beatles. I only listened once and then played it over and over and scratches ensued forever. Nothing like a well played album.
"I was in such a hurry to get inside Abbey Road and hear the music, I neglected to snap a photo of the crosswalk outside. So I set my alarm for dawn, leaving time to sneak back to that sacred ground before my flight home. Predictably, I was not the only pilgrim at Abbey Road with that idea. It's a surprisingly busy street--anyone trying to grooving up slowly in that crosswalk might get holy-rollered by a double-decker bus. There's an art to getting the photo right--a selfie stick won't cut it, if you want the whole sidewalk. You need somebody to take your picture from a few feet away and somebody else to keep a lookout for oncoming cars. So the crosswalk is a community full of strangers passing their phones back and forth. A nice lady from Argentina took my photo, in return I took hers. I lingered for a few hours, taking photos I'll never see, of people whose names I'll never learn. I felt blessed to share the moment with fellow devotees--the people that come and go, stop and say hello. abbey road album will always hold a special place in my heart. a late aunt of mine and i would stay awake playing cards and drinking during family vacations late at night. we always had abbey rd playing on 8-track. i was in high school. i'll never forget those great times & abbey rd.

Eric, great review of the Abbey Road album. Surprised you didn’t mention that the major difference between side 1 and side 2 had to do with the ego fuelled feud between John and Paul. John insisted that the album be straight forward rock n’ roll; Paul wanted a concept album like Sgt. Peppers. The compromise was side 1 was done like John wanted and side 2 was done more to Paul’s liking. In the end, a classic was made.
When you think about it, it seems such a good, sensible and practical idea, that it's no doubt been done over and over since - to present some shorter self-contained hard hitting singles on Side one and using the flip side to explore longer, more developed and perhaps less cohesive, even idiosyncratic ideas. How many other albums can the readership think of that use this durable idea? From the early 70s going forward, there'd have to be quite a few. Sort of a concept half-album preceded by other new songs. Any Queen, Kinks, Stones?
This album will emotionally affect anyone who listens to it, leaving them with a feeling of melancholy for the past but also hope for the future. A true masterpiece and their absolute best!!
Great review. My 1970 cassette version of Abbey Road had Something as track one side one followed by Here Comes The Sun and that makes sense as it has a softer lead into Maxwell's Silver Hammer than does Come Together. I never knew the album as having Come Together as the opening track until my cassette recording was stolen when my car got broken into in 1979. Devastating to say the least. So when i had to replace the cassette version again that year it came with a whole new opening version which honestly surprised me. To me Something is the quintessential opening song for the amazing Abbey Road album.
One of my favorites from this album is "The End", from the melody on Side B. The drum solo is amazing and the only time Ringo did a drum solo for The Beatles. And the guitar solo played by Paul, George, and John in that order, (you can hear the switch to each person very faintly) is fantastic! Also the only time that that has ever happened in Beatles history. The song is just so rock 'n roll!
I was raised on this album. All the Beatles albums really but as a child I don't think a day went by where my mom didn't play Abbey Road. And I would sit in front of the speakers.

Great overview, and I admire your honesty in saying you'd not listened to the album in full until you were preparing to review it, that's brave in Beatle world! :-) I've always thought of The End/Her Majesty as being a perfect end to the Beatles recording career. Let's call the last song "The End", and then follow it with a kind of "national anthem" to our Queen. In Britain until fairly recently, BBC television always closed down for the night with the national anthem (God Save The Queen) and I always felt like this was an equivalent (The Beatles effectively "shutting down").
Great review. Classic album. The bass lines on Something are tight. First time I heard She's So Heavy, I jumped up and ran over to the record player! Is it broke?!! lol Would make my deserted island list, no problem. Shoot, while I'm thinking about that list throw in Georges "All Things Must Pass" and "Yessongs" by Yes. Ok, I'll stop. I lied, "Exile on Main St." !!!
Where the "White Album" seemed to be all four individually working on their own songs, Abbey Road "Showcases" the individuality of the band members, in a more cohesive manner. The album is the "Beatles" as a single entity, but beautifully allows each individual member (including Ringo) to step up to the Mic so to speak without separating out the different musical directions they were all beginning to go by that time. They went out on top as the saying goes.
I have the Brazilian 1986 digital remaster pressing by fonobras - and it doesnt have Her Majesty on the back, but it has on the label. =P And the front photo is not cropped, I was so happy when I saw it LOL
One of my all-time favorite albums with EJ - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Eagles - Hotel California, Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, Al Jarreau - Breakin' Away, Rush - 2112/Moving Pictures, and a few others. Excellent info/background which makes for a interesting review.
This man mentions the ill-placed "Maxwell" next to George's heartfelt "Something." Has anyone else ever noticed that they kept doing that to George? There are many examples of Paul's worst songs next to George songs. Listen to what follows George's transcendent, "Within You, Without You" from Sgt. Pepper." Or what precedes George's funky "Savoy Truffle" from the White Album." Or what follows George's then-experimental "Love You To" from Revolver. Or what follows George's acid-laden "Blue Jay Way" from Mystery Tour. Or what follows George's opus, "It's All Too Much" from Yellow Submarine's soundtrack. No wonder George was so mad by the time they broke up!
@@baldman7738 YES - and George's excellent Taxman is clearly elevated by Paul's bass playing and lead guitar solo. Paul didn't ask for a song credit so GH has made some real serious money from that tune over the years. I make the point further up that I think Paul made a great musical contribution to the others' songs than they did to his, though I hesitate a little with George as his lead playing and third harmony work is SO good. IF the Lennon-McCartney approach to songwriting and publishing royalties hadn't been locked in so tightly it is reasonable the Eleanor Rigby could easily have had a McCartney-Martin credit. Trying to allocate credits fairly and, dare I say, equitably would have possibly have broken up the band long before 1970 - so I'm glad THAT didn't happen.

This is the most bittersweet album of all time. It really feels like a finale where many “final albums” for artists don’t feel like finales. On one hand you’re satisfied that the true last album in their discography is this good, but also sad knowing this is where it ended
Abbey Road was the album that got me into The Beatles, I went backwards and listened to Let It Be first and thought it was fine and then one morning Abbey Road was my album for my walk and it blew me away. I was humming it all day without even noticing!
I never thought of the Grateful Dead before when listening to Octopus' Garden, but the minute you said that, it really does evoke that sound. Great catch!
It was originally pronounced "mewg", but Bob Moog's wife was a teacher and her students had too much fun making cow sounds. So she decided it should be pronounced "mohg", and it's mostly been pronounced that way ever since. (If they'd been a German couple, it would've been "mohg" all along. But in America, as in "boot", it was "moog" at first.)
Well, it could be for the bass-playing alone -- waaaaay ahead of its time.and certifiably brilliant. It might be added that there are lot of examples to support the idea that (much of) Paul's best playing is to be found on songs he didn't write. I'd submit IWY, Come Together, Something, Hey Bulldog, Dear Prudence, LSD, Rain, Paperback Writer, Taxman, And Your Bird Can Sing and even earlier tunes like Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, The Word, Help, and IWtHYHnd - which were, I think, co-writes. The flies in the ointment are Penny Lane, Hello Goodbye, Lady Madonna, Two of Us and a couple of Paul's album tracks on Abbey Road - plus All My Loving! But doing the sums makes the case. Certified Macca classics like Hey Jude and Let it Be do not have particularly note-worthy basslines, but his bouncy feel certainly elevates If I Needed Someone, Here Comes the Sun and Nowhere Man - 3 of my own personal favourites - yes, I am a guitarist! So I guess I'm arguing Paul made a greater musical contribution to John's work than John (and George) did to his - wild exceptions being John's stellar rhythm gtr on All My Loving and ... well all of George's beautiful lead work really. as well as his much under-rated harmony singing. One might easily argue the most note-worthy contributions to Paul's work were made by ... George Martin. My favourite is George but this incredible creative team was essentially indivisible- listen to early John's work with George and then Pauls work with Ringo and it's good - but not THAT good. For example, the magic is there on Photograph, but it's partial. Sorry, reptile, your post seems to have got me ... er... started. : - {)
Given the time restraint, this is how a review could be done. It is not intended for Beatle enthusiasts, excellent for those who get to listen to the Beatles for the first time or for the first serious time. Excellent job sir!
For me, this album has the most beautiful vocal harmonies, and I think that's one of the most relevant features in it... "Because" and "Here Comes The Sun" are great examples of it, just legendary stuff ❤️❤️
I personally find it amazing how they hone and refine what could be a mediocre song into a work of art. You hear them actually craft each song. Just through experimentation and trial & error they polish each track into an actual composition as opposed to a simple jam. They turn each song into a swansong, especially on abbey Road. They were more together than apart because of their perfect blend of creative chemistry, although I do love all of their musical careers apart. But together, freakin magic!
Fantastic review! I end up going through phases where either this or the US version of Rubber Soul get played the most for me. But it is insane how much The Beatles changed their sound and music in 7 years time!
Definitely! But when I started seriously listening to The Beatles in the 80's, the only version I could find readily was the US version, before I heard the CD. The flow and song selection flows so much better on the US one! BTW, I also have to try the Brandy Alexander! Never had one before!

Production on this record is much better than their earlier albums, I believe it was helped by new equipment installed in abbey road studios. It sounds like a modern recording compared with their earlier work, and still holds up today
Not only that John and George doubled down! As well as Come Together (which ran into a copyright problem) and Something (one of the GOATs),by John's I Want You (She's So Heavy) is a Lennon classic and in its overall sound, feel and spacey, improvised sounding bluesey soloing and so is George's HCTS, vying hard to be one of my all-time faves - by anyone.
Paul, who played superb bass on all four songs, offers not only (most of) the medley complete with his own lead gtr contributions, but She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. Like John, he was offering a more soulful writing and vocal delivery here - something begun on the White Album. The styles and sounds - solid-body electrics, more distortion - were also changing. Also I'll give a shout out to Octopuses Garden - fairly original idea, with some smooth and slippery and genuinely melodic guitar lines from George anchored by Paul's by-now familiar oompah-style bassline. It's a nice simple pop song before the heavier close out to the big production of Side 2. Its saving grace is its not bloated, Opinions differ on whether Maxwell is - some just really do not care for the song. For me, it is the beginning of the song style of Wings. As some posters have said above, the production on the entire album is something that lifts it well above the shortcomings of any of the actual songs. It definitely presages the 70s.
AND IT'S GOT A RINGO SONG!
"I want you" is one of my favorite songs. The way it just cuts off at the end is just brilliant. The brutal silence after the dozen or so guitar runs just shattered me the first time I listened to it.

You skipped one of the best songs which has also been covered many times "she came in through the bathroom window" and the final guitar solos played by all three...followed by "the love you take is equal to the love you make"...that's what made the medley work!

You and me both, Pat. Hearing even a snippet of any one of the tracks always gives a strong urge to listen to the entire album from start to finish. It's an incomparable piece of work, even by the Beatles' own standards.

Hard to pick a favourite track, but I really like "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "Here Comes The Sun", and "Something".
You could ( arguably ) say that overall Paul and George had the "best" material on the record. John's most valuable contribution in my opinion, was "Come Together".
My favorite part of the album is the end of ... yeah, "The End". The part from the staccato piano chords. It is so incredibly beautiful and such a great lyric!
It's great to hear your Beatles experience(at least 12, years ago for you) started very similarly to where I am right now.
My parents LOVED all the famous hits and I also grew up feeling like I heard all there is to hear, all Beatles songs sound the same, and I had more interest in other music.
Discovering other excellent musicians on and music lovers on youtube such as yourself(I have been a big fan of your Pink Floyd videos for years now), and seeing how many of them praise The Beatles so highly got me more curious. Also a few older songs like Pink Floyd's Summer 68 and Blue Oyster Cult's Before The Kiss sounded Beatles-y and I love those songs. My interest peaked when Andrew Huang and Rob Scallon made an album in a day at Abbey Road, lots of Beatles influence in those songs, and it's always great when people share the Making of their music in the studio.
I have now heard The White Album, Sgt Pepper, Let it Be, and Abbey Road from beginning to end. I definitely understand more why they were SO HUGE in terms of fame and just being known as excellent musicians.
I used to listen to this album every night to help me sleep when I was a kid, I always had to skip the first 3 songs because Maxwell's Silver Hammer scared the heck out of me lol

It was my friend, the iconic creative guru and artist Douglas Maxwell who worked at Apple in Savile Row in 1968 until 1970, then carried on with Wings in the seventies that inspired Paul to write "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"...:)

Absolutely love this album and you're right, I Want You (She's So Heavy) is a really kick ass song, it's probably my favorite on Abbey Road.
The only thing though, why didn't you talk about "Carry That Weight" and "The End?" In my opinion, they're two VERY important songs that make this such a classic, especially the exchanging of guitar solos between George, Paul and John on "The End." Regardless though, really enjoyed the review and hope you do more. (Subscribed)

I agree. The End is the perfect capstone to their entire recording career really. It has Ringo's awesome drum solo, and all three of the others each playing a distinctive yet perfectly fitting guitar solo. Play Love Me Do and then The End and you will truly see just how far they had developed musically in just 6 years.
Or compare Love me do with tomorrow never knows..only 3.5 years apart!.
I have the 2009 CDs of both Abbey road and the White album and they're my favorite mixes of both.
Definitely a 10/10 album for me. Come Together is one of my all-time favourite Beatles songs.

Ringo really gave us his all on this album. This is the album that inspired me to start teaching myself how to play the drums so this album has a massive place in my heart. Love it so much.

This album is one where the CD layout is superior. There's just something about hearing the darkness and foreboding of the end of I Want You (She's So Heavy) followed immediately by the uplifting Here Comes The Sun. An effect you don't get with the record since you gotta get up and turn the thing over between these tracks.
Well, the vinyl was released a decade before the cd even existed, so it's not that superior, i still love the way it does it.

I picked up this vinyl yesterday and it was my first Beatles album, I love it so much, it’s been on repeat ever since
Long Comment Warning.
I noticed that on this album, four things were done that took advantage of the raw nature of vinyls.
1) Because vinyls don't clearly show you how long a song is (like how a digital CD player would, or an ipod or whatever), you don't know when I Want You will end. The song sounds like it's going to go on and on. Then suddenly it stops.
2) Its stop is so jarring, and even more so by making you acknowledge its ending by being the last song on side 1, and you have to pick up the vinyl and flip it after what felt like the middle of a song. (Whereas a CD would keep playing on to the next song).
3) The medley. The songs (if we can even call them individual songs) are listed on the back. But as the vinyl plays, we cannot tell when one song ends and the other starts -- for the most part. We can pick out lyrics that match song titles. But it gets all mixed up with the You Never Give Me Your Money reprise. (But with a CD or something, you can skip, thus revealing a difference between each song.)
And 4) There's a secret track. A CD would blatantly tell you there are 17 tracks, and as The End is finishing up, you'd think to yourself "Oh, this is just track 16."
Now, of course CDs weren't even a thing when Abbey Road was made, so they there wasn't a music medium that they were working against. But they still pulled off these tricks. My conclusion: Abbey Road is better as a vinyl.

chezzer58 Abbey Road sounds better then. Lots of 60s-70s rock music sounds awesome when your high. Remember that a lot of bands used drugs then and made lyrics and songs when high.
I’m not disputing what drugs may or may not do to enhance the listening or playing of a song. I just think it’s a shame that we need to go down that road of drug inducement in order to fulfil our lives. Just have a nice cup of Tea and a biscuit.

You Never.... is a brilliant song with the same kind of mixture as Happiness is a Warm Gun and Paranoid Android. Strangely overlooked, perhaps because it's part of the medley.

When I first heard Abbey Road, I didn't like it at all, so I can relate, but the album is amazing. I just needed to give it time, and I'm glad I did!
The second side of Abbey Road is a great work of art. Side 1 is wonderful, but really it's just a bunch of great songs.

I’m 38 and I’ve always thought The Beatles were overrated, about 3 months ago I decided to give their discography a shot. Wow was I wrong! So far I’ve listened to Abby Road, Revolver and Sargent peppers. Revolver is my favorite so far but Abby Road is Right up there.

Golden Slumbers is absolutely one of the highlights on the album for me.
Yes - the words may have been borrowed but the melodies from McCartney in the medley are really very, very memorable. I guess that's why so many are showing the love for You Never Give Me Your Money. It's such a great tune, beautifully phrased and beautifully arranged - or should that be orchestrated.
Good review...I always loved I Want you, She's so Heavy. The powerfully repetitive guitar riff just burns itself into your head as you near the end. John's ever present angst once again on display.

This Lp is just the absolute genius of The Beatles. I only listened once and then played it over and over and scratches ensued forever. Nothing like a well played album.
"I was in such a hurry to get inside Abbey Road and hear the music, I neglected to snap a photo of the crosswalk outside. So I set my alarm for dawn, leaving time to sneak back to that sacred ground before my flight home. Predictably, I was not the only pilgrim at Abbey Road with that idea. It's a surprisingly busy street--anyone trying to grooving up slowly in that crosswalk might get holy-rollered by a double-decker bus. There's an art to getting the photo right--a selfie stick won't cut it, if you want the whole sidewalk. You need somebody to take your picture from a few feet away and somebody else to keep a lookout for oncoming cars. So the crosswalk is a community full of strangers passing their phones back and forth. A nice lady from Argentina took my photo, in return I took hers. I lingered for a few hours, taking photos I'll never see, of people whose names I'll never learn. I felt blessed to share the moment with fellow devotees--the people that come and go, stop and say hello. Eric, great review of the Abbey Road album. Surprised you didn’t mention that the major difference between side 1 and side 2 had to do with the ego fuelled feud between John and Paul. John insisted that the album be straight forward rock n’ roll; Paul wanted a concept album like Sgt. Peppers. The compromise was side 1 was done like John wanted and side 2 was done more to Paul’s liking. In the end, a classic was made.
When you think about it, it seems such a good, sensible and practical idea, that it's no doubt been done over and over since - to present some shorter self-contained hard hitting singles on Side one and using the flip side to explore longer, more developed and perhaps less cohesive, even idiosyncratic ideas.
How many other albums can the readership think of that use this durable idea? From the early 70s going forward, there'd have to be quite a few. Sort of a concept half-album preceded by other new songs. Any Queen, Kinks, Stones?

My 1970 cassette version of Abbey Road had Something as track one side one followed by Here Comes The Sun and that makes sense as it has a softer lead into Maxwell's Silver Hammer than does Come Together.
I never knew the album as having Come Together as the opening track until my cassette recording was stolen when my car got broken into in 1979.
Devastating to say the least.
So when i had to replace the cassette version again that year it came with a whole new opening version which honestly surprised me.
To me Something is the quintessential opening song for the amazing Abbey Road album.

One of my favorites from this album is "The End", from the melody on Side B. The drum solo is amazing and the only time Ringo did a drum solo for The Beatles. And the guitar solo played by Paul, George, and John in that order, (you can hear the switch to each person very faintly) is fantastic! Also the only time that that has ever happened in Beatles history. The song is just so rock 'n roll!

I was raised on this album. All the Beatles albums really but as a child I don't think a day went by where my mom didn't play Abbey Road. And I would sit in front of the speakers.

I've always thought of The End/Her Majesty as being a perfect end to the Beatles recording career. Let's call the last song "The End", and then follow it with a kind of "national anthem" to our Queen. In Britain until fairly recently, BBC television always closed down for the night with the national anthem (God Save The Queen) and I always felt like this was an equivalent (The Beatles effectively "shutting down").

Is it broke?!! lol Would make my deserted island list, no problem. Shoot, while I'm thinking about that list throw in Georges "All Things Must Pass" and "Yessongs" by Yes. Ok, I'll stop. Where the "White Album" seemed to be all four individually working on their own songs, Abbey Road "Showcases" the individuality of the band members, in a more cohesive manner. The album is the "Beatles" as a single entity, but beautifully allows each individual member (including Ringo) to step up to the Mic so to speak without separating out the different musical directions they were all beginning to go by that time.
They went out on top as the saying goes.
I have the Brazilian 1986 digital remaster pressing by fonobras - and it doesnt have Her Majesty on the back, but it has on the label. =P And the front photo is not cropped, I was so happy when I saw it LOL

One of my all-time favorite albums with EJ - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Eagles - Hotel California, Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, Al Jarreau - Breakin' Away, Rush - 2112/Moving Pictures, and a few others. Excellent info/background which makes for a interesting review.
What can one say about this album that hasn't been said before. I think it's one of the best albums ever made.

This man mentions the ill-placed "Maxwell" next to George's heartfelt "Something." Has anyone else ever noticed that they kept doing that to George? There are many examples of Paul's worst songs next to George songs. Listen to what follows George's transcendent, "Within You, Without You" from Sgt. Pepper." Or what precedes George's funky "Savoy Truffle" from the White Album." Or what follows George's then-experimental "Love You To" from Revolver. Or what follows George's acid-laden "Blue Jay Way" from Mystery Tour. Or what follows George's opus, "It's All Too Much" from Yellow Submarine's soundtrack. No wonder George was so mad by the time they broke up!
Taxman is followed by Eleanor Rigby though. Which is one of pauls best songs
@@baldman7738 YES - and George's excellent Taxman is clearly elevated by Paul's bass playing and lead guitar solo. Paul didn't ask for a song credit so GH has made some real serious money from that tune over the years.
I make the point further up that I think Paul made a great musical contribution to the others' songs than they did to his, though I hesitate a little with George as his lead playing and third harmony work is SO good. IF the Lennon-McCartney approach to songwriting and publishing royalties hadn't been locked in so tightly it is reasonable the Eleanor Rigby could easily have had a McCartney-Martin credit. Trying to allocate credits fairly and, dare I say, equitably would have possibly have broken up the band long before 1970 - so I'm glad THAT didn't happen.

This is the most bittersweet album of all time. It really feels like a finale where many “final albums” for artists don’t feel like finales. On one hand you’re satisfied that the true last album in their discography is this good, but also sad knowing this is where it ended
Abbey Road was the album that got me into The Beatles, I went backwards and listened to Let It Be first and thought it was fine and then one morning Abbey Road was my album for my walk and it blew me away. I was humming it all day without even noticing!

No, it's spelled Moog, therefore, it's pronounced "moog."
It was originally pronounced "mewg", but Bob Moog's wife was a teacher and her students had too much fun making cow sounds. So she decided it should be pronounced "mohg", and it's mostly been pronounced that way ever since. (If they'd been a German couple, it would've been "mohg" all along. But in America, as in "boot", it was "moog" at first.)

Well, it could be for the bass-playing alone -- waaaaay ahead of its time.and certifiably brilliant. It might be added that there are lot of examples to support the idea that (much of) Paul's best playing is to be found on songs he didn't write.
I'd submit IWY, Come Together, Something, Hey Bulldog, Dear Prudence, LSD, Rain, Paperback Writer, Taxman, And Your Bird Can Sing and even earlier tunes like Day Tripper, We Can Work It Out, The Word, Help, and IWtHYHnd - which were, I think, co-writes. The flies in the ointment are Penny Lane, Hello Goodbye, Lady Madonna, Two of Us and a couple of Paul's album tracks on Abbey Road - plus All My Loving! But doing the sums makes the case. Certified Macca classics like Hey Jude and Let it Be do not have particularly note-worthy basslines, but his bouncy feel certainly elevates If I Needed Someone, Here Comes the Sun and Nowhere Man - 3 of my own personal favourites - yes, I am a guitarist! So I guess I'm arguing Paul made a greater musical contribution to John's work than John (and George) did to his - wild exceptions being John's stellar rhythm gtr on All My Loving and ... well all of George's beautiful lead work really. as well as his much under-rated harmony singing. One might easily argue the most note-worthy contributions to Paul's work were made by ... George Martin. My favourite is George but this incredible creative team was essentially indivisible- listen to early John's work with George and then Pauls work with Ringo and it's good - but not THAT good. For example, the magic is there on Photograph, but it's partial.

For me, this album has the most beautiful vocal harmonies, and I think that's one of the most relevant features in it... "Because" and "Here Comes The Sun" are great examples of it, just legendary stuff ❤️❤️

I enjoy Abbey Road #1 just because of "I Want You" because of the euphoric and psychedelic vibe it gives me when I play it on the table!
Revolver is definitely a great album but I wouldn't say it's their greatest, it's either Abbey Road or Rubber Soul for me.
I personally find it amazing how they hone and refine what could be a mediocre song into a work of art. You hear them actually craft each song. Just through experimentation and trial & error they polish each track into an actual composition as opposed to a simple jam. They turn each song into a swansong, especially on abbey Road. They were more together than apart because of their perfect blend of creative chemistry, although I do love all of their musical careers apart. But together, freakin magic!

Definitely! But when I started seriously listening to The Beatles in the 80's, the only version I could find readily was the US version, before I heard the CD. The flow and song selection flows so much better on the US one! BTW, I also have to try the Brandy Alexander! Never had one before!
