    What have hybrids brought to the WRC? Manufacturers? Well no extra have joined, so that's an epic fail. And as ex-Ford manager, Gerard Quinn has consistently said, they get nothing out of it, as it's not their hybrid - so you can't even market the hybrid as a selling point.

    I think it's a good move for the current situation. Hybird honestly doesn't add that much apeal for the average viewer, moreover it was initialy meant for manufacturers attraction and considering that even the teams are against hybrid for the costs the sport might be better of without hybrid for the next few years. Hopefully FIA learned something for the next ruleset in order to prevent such issues.

    So long as viewers can't relate WRC cars to ones they can own and drive it will never be successful in terms of viewership. It won't matter if they are electric, hybrid, or NA. 1997 to 2010 homologation regulations (2500 units sold only) were some of the most cost effective, popular, and successful in the history of the sport. Going down the F1 route is a huge mistake. Watching professional rally drivers handle modified versions of road cars on public roads was what made WRC fun to watch. Yes, there are other rally classes that do this today, but they are not the pinnacle and rarely televised, and certainly not consistently. There will be those that will argue that you can't go backwards in terms of power and aero but that's what happened after Group B era ended and sport was still successful, even though, unlike today, Group B was crazy popular.

    • @prodrive7105
      @prodrive7105 Місяць тому +3

      97-onwards WRC regulations demanded 25.000 units of the base car to be built within 12 months, not 2500.
      Group A was initually 5000 units but was reduced to 2500 units in 1992-ish.
      But the big difference was that where Group A demanded a car with the same drivetrain and suspension layout, turbo and intercooler size, same base engine etc, WRC only demanded the body type to have been produced in 25.000 units, the rest could be changed and the base engine could be taken from another model in the manufactures range (Corolla WRC initually used the Celica GT-Four engine before swithing to Lexus IS200 base engine for example)

      This is a fact, but what do you do when manufacturers are all moving to stupid SUV and CUV monstrosities to cash in on fat profit margins? These cars are in no way suited to rallying. In fact, I would love watching onboards of these vehicles being driven in WRC. It would be way more interesting then the boring spaceships they have now. I can see these current WRC1 cars being interesting as a spectacle, like seeing them for the first time (sort of like fireworks), but not for someone who understands and appreciates motorsports and wants to follow a season of WRC as a sport and not just a one time experience. A minimum weight, some sort of power to weight derivative and a floor plan / chassis based on a production model. It just doesn't make sense. All 3 of these MFGs have been making their own hybrid systems for 2 decades now, but they are forced to buy one from a 3rd party so obviously there is no connection whatsoever to their road going models or brand. Then you have situations like CER a few weeks ago where 4 of the 9 Rally 1 cars had an inoperable hybrid unit in the first leg of the rally that couldn't be fixed until service, and the teams aren't the ones allowed to do it. Why would a MFG want to pay to have to run someone else's junk that could ultimately cost them results and make them look bad to when it isn't working consistently? That's without even touching cost...

Other than the increased safety levels of these cars how do they significant different from old group B? Rally cars should be based on production body shells, albeit heavy modified. This is the essence of rallying and it makes it acceptable to more competitors. Just look at Rally 2. Give them more power, 7 speed gearboxes and active diffs. All established tech and in relative terms more affordable and maintainable. And as I say more accessible so equals more entries. Rallying is not F1.

    Basically WRC needs to be more cost effective for manufacturers. Toyota most likely doesn't want to drop Rally1 but the fact is that they are going to end up in a championship by themselves, just like happened in WEC before the new Hypercar regs were brought in. A Hypercar-like spec which would be less restrictive about engine choice and open to manufacturing styling choices would be good.
    Hybrid? Well, it's nice to see these cars go like rocket ships off the line but we definitely do not want to see hybrid faults being a roll of the dice in every stage that teams can't do anything to improve on.

    The problem is Rally 2 is not what the Top class for rallying should be. The reason it’s so successful is its relevance and affordability for national and domestic championships. It’s great for what it is. Making it the top class, who knows.. it might affect the costs of the cars and draw people away and we repeat the cycle. WRC should be the top class for car and driver. The cars need to be unique, different and the most elite rally cars to drive. Look at WEC. The championship was struggling towards the end of the lmp1 days and the new hypercar regulations have boomed the series. What if they just settled for lmp2 regulations? It wouldn’t be the same.
    WRC needs to be the top class and the new regulations are crucial for this.

    • @maximumattackrallying
      @maximumattackrallying  Місяць тому +2

      I'm not sure I agree with that. The top class of rallying was always affordable for national and domestic championships; from the earliest days of the sport right through until the 2017 regulation cycle began. The FIA/WRC decided at that point to create an elite category of car that could no longer realistically be run by private teams, which was a significant step away from the very DNA of the sport. One of the reasons rallying was so successful was because it was (relatively) accessible. A privateer could compete on WRC events, be it in a top-class Group A or WRC car, or in one of the numerous lower category Group A/N machines. The decision to make the top of the sport elite (and to pretty much double the cost of the cars) has fundamentally changed it, and that change hasn't been supported by manufacturers or privateers

      @ Problem is as many drivers have stated you’re downgrading the safety and many other elements. Found this quote from Tanak. “We are reducing a lot of power in Rally1 cars where the chassis and the roll cage is made for protection. And then we are putting a lot more power in a Rally2 car where you don't have this kind of safety and things," The point being if they want to make a rally plus car like what was said it’s not the solution.
      Also you risk over saturating the market. Look at GT3 racing. It’s a great formula but oversaturated to the point now costs are increasing and the promoters need to get on top of this. That’s what I fear rally 2 will skyrocket in costs. Also don’t expect Skoda, Citroen and Volkswagen for example to enter WRC if rally 2 becomes the top class. There business mode is selling to privateers and the costs will naturally skyrocket and they may have no interest in becoming a full factory team anyway.

      @@RallyUnleashed-sm4cl Tanak has a point, but I don't believe we need Rally2+. The cars don't need more power. The current Rally2 design is absolutely fine, and I don't buy the idea that they aren't spectacular enough. With top drivers, the spectacle will be fine. In terms of safety, we could also incorporate concepts learned from the Rally1 chassis into the next generation of Rally2 car. Ultimately, the space frame chassis is just a roll cage, and adding a double roll hoop and improved side-impact protection to a Rally2 car would not be that difficult.
      There is a risk that costs could increase if manufacturers try to develop Rally2 cars more, but I think that can be prevented with strict controls on regulations. Rally2 is already very well regulated to control costs (especially compared to Rally1). The business model for selling cars to privateers also helps, because it allows any manufacturer that joins the championship to offset their development costs by selling cars to privateers, which is something they can't do with Rally1 (or with the 2017-21 WRC cars).
      Rally2 definitely has some potential problems of course but, compared to what we have now, it's a far superior concept.

    As much as I understand your points but strongly disagree with some of them.
    I am against hybrids in motorsport (with some caveats). It increases weight, production cost, maintenance and make service more difficult (speaking from experience from working on EV racecar).
    When it comes to spec parts, I am big fan of an idea, but without limiting them to single supplier. Just strict rules regarding design, production and cost of specific parts (similar to how LMDH regulations handle different chassis manufacturers).
    My favourite option however, would be more "open" ruleset with strict performance limitations and basic familiarity with a road going cars. Rally 1 experiment have proven that spec parts and higher speeds don't bring either fans or manufacturers into the sport. Bringing back road based rally cars (outside of relatively slow Rally 3-5 cars and "gimmicky" GT cars) might bring back interest of manufacturers (option to actually market their technology and engineering in motorsport) or at least allow more privateer teams to take their shot at top class in rallying with their own rally packages for road going models.

It’s too complex expensive and unreliable without much benefit. hybrid in WRC is like asking a top sports athlete to gain some extra fat so they can be more comfortable in winter and be more relevant to every day common person
    it was, is and always will be just a gimmick, and the idea that hybrid is necessary in autosport to make it relevant to road cars is IMHO plain stupid, nobody is buying Ford, Hyundai or Toyota hybrid because WRC cars are also hybrid
    even had to invent a new class for this nonsense...
    Hybrid in F1 is completely different beast, because of the repetitiveness of the course, and even they are simplifying it because it isn't relevant to general cars
    at the end - people buy hybrid road cars because of benefits to their driving experience, not because F1 or WRC car also has it, right now and for foreseeable future they, sadly, are luxury items, just like full electric vehicles, so here is an idea - stop robbing people blind with obviously jacked up EV and hybrid prices and you won't need to pay more to promote that idea in motorsports

    I think the whole idea of hybrid vehicles were a dumb idea to begin with, imho. Seemed that the FIA, in their "infinite" wisdom, hit a false positive by seeing all these younger breadtube creators/influencers gushing over the hiccup known as Group B, and decided to have went with that over their actual golden era, Group A.
    Hybrid rally cars had made it so that you bottlenecked everything, cars, teams, drivers. You want more competition and competitors competing with a more direct race to showroom connection. All they need to do is have a proper graduating system where Rally1 (or whatever F1-inism they want to call it) being WRC2 cars with some added modifications.
    That's all they need because, go figure, they learned post-Group B that you don't need all that power to go fast in rally.

    By no means an expert, just a past fan that has lost love for the WRC over the years. In my opinion, rally is the most "everyman" motorsport. It should be more relatable to the people driving a back road home from work everyday. Group A was my favorite era followed closely by the WRC Car regulations that followed. Group A not only lead to some amazing homologation road cars but was so identifiable to regular people because these were massaged road cars doing amazing things! WRC was cool if technology is the goal. Active diffs and flappy electro hydraulic gearboxes made the competition more exciting and the WRC rules lead to more manufacturer involvement, creating a variety of competitive cars that were definitely more than the road version but still relatable. Modern WRC cars look like space capsules and nothing anyone would desire in their own driveways. Just my 2 cents. ♥️
