    Hit the nail on the head. UK rallying in that regard is definitely lagging behind. Motorsport UK teaming up with M-sport to get something similar done with a Fiesta would go down well I think

    Just saw this video when looking for what they have eventually agreed. Agree with you on pretty much everything. I was thinking the other day, cspcsity is now outdated with the many 1.6turbos etc about now. Could you limit on bhp? Is that possible quickly? It would also mean that competing would be so much cheaper in terms of running costs with people able to run less stressed engines and drivetrains. You will still get your millington boys competing at the top end, but there would also be better classes at the entry/affordable clubman level. Afraid these Rally Start classes won't bring enough of the newer cars into play. I love n/a spunds etc, but those types of engines are getting older and more expensive. If you want a cheapish decent powered limited cost class, why not something like a 1.6t fiesta (or similar) with sealed engines but, importantly, very good suspension. Or a RWD equivalent would be great - BMW 1 series, Mazda MX5?!

    Dacia has in Spain, Sandero Eco Cup from this year with a car based on Sandero Stepway last gen. They started this cup in 2014 with old Sandero (1.2 16v around 80-90 HP). In my country (Romania) we have Dacia Cup (Cupa Dacia), the longest cup in the Romanian Championship (2007). Logan was the first model and actually some of them are still running and others are competing in smaller championships. From 2015 Sandero was added with a 0.9 Tce engine, 115 HP and now you can choose 115 or 130 HP (new ecu, pops and bangs😂). Also don't forget Suzuki Swift Cup. I saw in Spain they have the new and old model in rallying plus the Rally5 Kit. In Romania also we have Swift Cup from 2013 just with the model from 2013-2018. Small car, much faster than Dacia, 1.6 NA engine, 140 HP, manual gearbox. Names like Simone Tempestini or Norbert Maior started their rally careers in Dacia cars.

    Great to see you acknowledging Hayden for his achievements in Rallying. He definatley deserves a drive back in the WRC, but obviously you need more than just talent to get a seat back at that level. $$$$$$. A shame Hyundai WRT don't aknowledge his loyalty and promotion of thier brand over all the years, with another opportunity. Seems no new drivers to Hyundai WRT ever seem to do well or are happy within the team. Never the less I believe Hayden is as better driver now then he was back when he was in WRC and a lot more happier doing what he does now.

  • @alanb9337
    @alanb9337 6 днів тому

    Quite fortunate that Paddon was able to get to the last round of the ERC. New car sales for NZ across the brands are down 18 percent (whole year sales 2024 till the end of August). 2019 did not work out for Paddon, hitting the rock in testing for Rally Finland that wrecked the car, poor result at Rally GB in the Rally2 Fiesta (38th) and the cancelled event due to bushfires at Rally Australia, big expenses and not much benefit. Paddon's future -short term is to attempt to regain the Asia-Pacific rally title at the NZ Asia Pacific event (8-10 November, Whangarei on the old WRC NZ stages) 2025 - Australia?, that may depend on what happens with Australian TCR. The 2024 Australian TCR series's grids have been 12-15 cars cars with 2 Hyundai cars (one driven by former BTCC driver - Tom Oliphant). TCR Australia wants to be at some or all of SuperCar events for the larger crowds and larger screen audiences. Hyundai has had a presence in Australian Rallying since many years ago (Wayne Bell) and in recent years with i20s. USA - possible because Open Class allows some innovation. Paddon might wish to compete only with equivalent machinery to what Subaru turns up with.

    Rallying seems to have an issue with drivers from NZ/Australia; they really have to jump through hoops to get anywhere. Which is quite the opposite for circuit racing where plenty have had success; McLaren, Hulme, the Brabhams, Bamber, Hartley, Stanaway, Webber, McLaughlin, SVG, etc If he was Finnish/ French one assumes he'd have got more opportunities.......and that is an issue for the sport.

    Interesting what you say about the Hyundai driver management. Not only Paddon, what happened to Suninen and Lindholm, what will happen to Mikkelsen at the end of this year and what will happen to Fourmaux should he move there as a #3. What concerns Paddon, I have deepest respect for him. He may have only won one ERC round this year, but I think on top of everything it is fair to say that the Hyundai wasn't quite on par with Citroen and Skoda in the ERC. What was really impressive was the consistency, he is fast and fault free on every surface and every condition, that made him champ and that would make him a brilliant at least #2 or #3 driver for any WRC team.

    • @maximumattackrallying

Paddon has done a great job in the ERC. I hope we still see him on at least some international rallies, as he is super passionate and clearly still has the speed and, crucially as you said, the consistency.

    First Step, dump Rally1 (i hate to say it but it failed in pretty much all aspects) Second : implement a Rally2 + Category for top class . In meantime, create a new Top class thats actually cost effective by going back to stock chassis including a new saftey concept. Open up class form so manufacturers can choose of a wider range of cars. Third: implementing a production wrc class (like a modern Group A Class with Cars closer to Stock) and make this class completely open in terms of drive train. EVs, hybrid, hydrogen. Make Rallying the most attractive test bed for car manufacturers, because thats it what rallying also should be. And ffs, make rallying more accessible for the ones who are not yet fans of this sport, putting everything behind pay walls and jist give them snippets of what this sport really is won't bring anyone new in. Why dont they stream at least the Powerstage on UA-cam ? FIA clearly failed to rescue the WRC, now we are going to drive straight into a Wall, because we are facing a Situation where we have one big manufacturer left (if you believe rumors). Its a similar situation to wec at the end days of LMP1s. Albeit not the same, im still sure that taking the essence of whats making the LMH era so successful is the way to go here.

      Yes, specially the marketing side. It's by far the worst thing for me, what's ruining the WRC the most. They are extremely bad at it, it's incredible. They do everything wrong: bad onboard cameras placement and aiming, constant use of the useless facecam, the lame bumpercam, showing us onboards on straights and then cutting it when a corner is about to come; terrible highlights even in Red Bull TV let alone in the official channel, which are disgusting; etc. Yes, the Red Bull content is not good either. It's not engaging to non-enthusiasts, I've seen it. There's a TV program here in my city that's dedicated to motorsports, specially to WRC. They take Red Bull TV's content, dub it to Spanish, and show it to us. Sometimes I've watched it this year, and my family is there as well, specially my mother. Only one time they were engaged, at rally Portugal. The footage shown was exciting, and they seemed impressed with the driving, the speed of the cars, and the places in which they were driving - as they were going fast and all over the place close to scary cliffs, and due to their beauty. But most of the time it's just bad, specially the recent one at Acropolis. Jeez, it was terrible. Stage-end interview after stage-end interview. Boring footage of the cars going by; terrible drone footage that washes away all the craziness of rallying, makes me sick with such flamboyance, and won't even allow me to see the car with those cringe Tik-Tok movements; short onboards on boring places and cutting off right when a cool thing is about to come, etc. They were not engaged at all, and it was frustrating, knowing the situation in which the WRC is. On the other hand, Rally2+ is unneeded if they finally decide to ditch the hybrid. A Rally2+ would have more power so it would need stronger thus more expensive transmissions to cope with the increased forces. The Rally1 cars already have them. Maybe also make the Rally1 cars less aerodynamic, like the 2016 cars, if the costs of aero development are high. Manufacturers no longer want Rally2 anyway, it's a class that's dying. Making the cars closer to stock makes no sense nowadays. Stock cars are moron-proof, easy, comfortable, slow, boring machines. We are no longer in the Group 4 times. Group A was somewhat closer to stock cars, but then again, those were different times: stock cars weren't as easy as today's. But newer generations only drive (mostly) such easy stock cars, and as a result, they have no idea about vehicle dynamics in the slightest and what it means to be a proper driver. This is for me the main reason why motorsports are no longer as popular. Generally, they have never experienced not even a slight understeer. Heck, I haven't either, even after tons of years simrallying, until I decided to force it in a safe place just to get the feeling IRL. So, the average Joe in stock cars just moves the steering wheel and push pedals. Easy. And that's what they think motorsports are. They think they are pointless and that they could do it. They don't understand what they see in the rally footage, not even if the car is all over the place. So, to engage with people that knows nothing about rally and motorsports, you cannot show them average-looking, lame cars. If you show them shopping cars, you enforce the idea that what they are doing is nothing special. Savage cars like Rally1 or Group B give a different idea, and not even, because they still look like "town cars" for plenty of people - as several chaps said on Twitter, disrespectfully, when they saw the cars driving on public Spanish roads between the traffic; that's just one example. One even said that they would hit the Rally1 car with their stock Golf to put them in their place, and he was not joking at all. If only they knew they have not even 3% of the skills those drivers have, and that the cars are million-dollar bulls that would, in the case of such a collision, make their shitboxes sentient and want to visit the psychologist rather than the mechanic. A sufficiently good rally car has to be totally different than the stock car. Rally2-like is acceptable. Rally3? No. I hope the GR Yaris success leads them to make expensive and appealing sports cars for the road, and have the "big brother" at WRC level. Like the Aston Martin Valkyrie or the Mercedes-AMG One, and their "big brothers" at Formula 1. But not that expensive, of course.

    Hybrid seems too complex for racing, but I'm no expert. Also, having two power sources that are fire prone in collisions doesn't seem great either...

    These Rally1 regulations are really an insult to the fans and manufacturers. Not that I'm against hybrid or anything but FIA and the organizers seem to be really lost for what they want to do, there is no commitment to anything. At the start of the year they were talking about rally2+, now they want to remove hybrid. It's just confusing and no wonder manufacturers don't want to join in this mess. Also the timeline for the new 2027(?) regulations is coming closer and closer and still nothing concrete.

      @@Franko384 that's a bit much. Without the Rally1 cars for comparison, people would have forgotten the difference within a couple of rallies, especially once you put Tänak, Neuville etc in them.
